Small and intimate. While the music was just a tad loud it is a great place to have dinner with someone special. Thankfully the menu is small and all choices looked amazing. The carrot salad is not to be missed and the duck was divine. Also, a great spot if you have (Oregon) Pinot Noir fatigue. We we were directed to a new varietal that was indeed interesting (in a very good way) that paired perfectly with our entrees.

This place is so sweet to me. I love the staff, the intimacy of walking through the kitchen to find a seat, the wine list, and of course the food. I always look forward to it

Stunning food, and the wine pairing was on point. Every bite was an explosion of flavors perfectly balanced. Spendy, but totally worth it.

More people need to know about this place! It’s amazing on so many levels. Farmers market fresh food, the best tasting rotating wine menu, and brilliant staff. If you haven’t been yet—just go.

Best meal / dinning experience I’ve had in years! The Sunday supper is such a great value I couldn’t believe it. The atmosphere the food and the staff were so awesome I couldn’t recommend it enough.

Absolutely fabulous food, cozy atmosphere. Really like the mural with updated interior. We had an AMAZING eleven course meal there for New years eve.

Excellent Italian--be sure and try the vegetables! Dined at Nonna Tavern, the more informal bar of DOC.

We went here for our 3rd wedding anniversary. The food was incredible, with flavor combinations that were unique and creative. The wine pairings for each course were perfect. This is a small, cozy, restaurant. Well worth the price tag.

A group of friends decided a special dinner was in order. The Sat evening tasting menu at DOC seemed just the thing. The menu is spendy, without a doubt, but food is spectacular. Each of us had our favorites bit the duck egg raviolla was the table pic for best dish. The wait staff was knowledgeable, helpful and on top of any request we had. The wine pairings ranged from interesting to incredible. We had six courses and everyone had something special to enjoy. They accommodated a gluten free customer very easily.

Best birthday dinner! The ambience was lovely - low key and relaxed. Our server asked us if we had any food allergies, if we wanted anything to drink and then took care of everything else. The menu was pre-fixed and everything was perfect. My favorites were the grilled tuna and Jordan's family recipe for Sunshine cake. Can't wait to go back. It's great for date night or small groups and I love that it's on Open Table so it was easy to make a reservation.

This place was insanely good. The girlfriend and I decided it was most likely the best meal we have ever eaten out at. The price with the wine pairing was perfect. great selection and great portions. Guys - Only go if you realllllly like her ;)

We have eaten at this restaurant several times and have always been impressed by their food and service, but I never took the time to write them a review. This New Year's eve we celebrated at their establishmen and were amazed by their 11 course meal, complemented by wine pairings. Even though we had a good meal at Beast recently, DOC was much better.

Top notch. One of my top 3 favorites in town. Pricey but worth every penny. Special occasion sort of place, fixed price menu and they definitely accommodate dietary restrictions. Wine pairing. Then call a cab home.

Incredible dinner. The tasting menu and wine pairings were excellent, and accompanied by warm and friendly service. The super cozy atmosphere was dark and romantic. Perfect for an anniversary dinner.

Quite simply one of the best meals I've ever enjoyed. The "5 course" tasting menu seems to be prepared by angels, with each course being comprised of three dishes; it's almost like tasting everything on the menu. Where other tasting menu experiences can feel rushed or too slow, the pace here was fantastic; we never had to ask to keep a dish that we were still nibbling on, nor did we have to make room for new dishes - it was perfect. Something must also be said for the setting. When you step into the restaurant you are literally walking through the kitchen into a very intimate dining room, from which you will be able to watch beautiful things being prepared for your enjoyment, all evening long. It has got to be one of the most romantic spots in the city, hands down. This one will be going on my "best ever" list.

Tasting menu is great. Lots of fresh seasonal flavors arranged in creative ways. The chef clearly takes pride in his work. We've been here a few times already and surely will come back again.

The restaurant is really small, and so they literally cook the food right in front of you. the dining room and the kitchen are not separated at all, which makes you feel like you are a guest in somebody's home .the food was delicious, the wine pairings were great, and I thought the service was friendly.

Great fancy dinner for special occasions. The wine pairing with the meals is a great add-on, but usually pushes me over the edge. I continue to order it tho because his pairings are so good.

DOC has become my go-to place whenever I have out of town guests, as well as one of my all time Portland favorites to share with family and friends. The six course Chef's Choice Taster Menu is always a unique and rewarding experience for even the most picky foodie. Every course features delectable selections created from the freshest local produce, seafood and meat - and you can watch as each course is expertly prepared within easy view. DOC is a lovely, intimate restaurant and for each "seating" you need to allow just about two hours. Two hours to savor every single bite.

DOC is such a hidden gem. It’s small, intimate and subdued and the food is delicious, polished and gorgeously plated. One of the few tasting menu/fixed price restaurants I’ve dined at that feels warm and relaxed. We had a wonderful winter tasting menu dinner this year with incredible steelhead trout in two courses (crudo and sautéed) , mushrooms, root vegetables, risotto, perfectly cooked pork loin, the requisite cheese plate and a flourless chocolate cake that was like fudge. So good!

We dined Saturday night, Sept 15th for my wife's birthday, and it was SPECTACULAR. All six courses contained super fresh produce, flavor combinations we'd not considered, and even an ingredient we'd never heard of: Dragon Lingerie. Seriously, that's the name. I'll never forget it. We opted for the wine pairings, and as Lacey was our server, we were glad we did. She didn't just pour the wines, she told us how they fit with the food, and what specific flavors they were pairing with the different ingredients. She told us about the provenance of the wines, the winemaker or family, she knew it all. The house was full, so I thought I might be taking too much time with questions, but none of the other patrons seemed to be neglected or anxious to go. Heather and Sean, the other servers, were just as thorough and reliable. Despite having multiple folks handling parts of our service, nothing felt disjointed or staccato. I never had to ask for anything, it was supplied before I'd even thought to ask. Diego and Mary (I seriously got everyone's name, they all deserve shout outs) were killing it in the kitchen, every course held little surprises, even when I bit into a little too much calabrian chile in the cavatelli (and Lacey was right there with another dollop of wine to wash it away.) I often hear complaints from diners about the service in Portland not equalling the level of the food, but this is most certainly not the case at D.O.C. The service, quality and thoughtfulness rivals our old favorite special-occasion spot, Genoa. They live that tradition, and we will be happily returning. Thank you to everyone at D.O.C.!!

My husband took me here for the wine pairing Valentines dinner. It was one of the most amazing culinary experiences I have ever enjoyed. Delicious and surprising.

Wonderful place for a special mean with friends. I've celebrated several birthdays with friends here. Perfect ambience, conducive to sharing, impeccable service. Seasonal and local selections are top notch.

Cozy little place with super friendly staff. We tried this place for the first time and chose their 'dining month' menu and this review is purely based on that experience. There is a chef's menu which is has six courses with optional wine pairing. As part of the dining month menu they offered a three-course menu with grilled carrots, mushroom risotto and lemon tart. The wine pairing was optional. The appetizer and main course were good but very one-dimentional. They left me searching for flavors which was ironic as our server told us they were known for flavorful small plates. The wines paired really well with the food. Lemon tart was the real winner of the evening. It was absolutely perfect in taste, texture and presentation. I would like to try their chef's menu and hopefully find the flavorful food that they are apparently known for.

My husband recently took me to DOC to celebrate a wedding anniversary. It was delightful. This is a unique dining experience as diners must walk through the "kitchen" in order to get to their table. Upon seating, we reviewed the "Chef's Choice" menu (all the choices were amazing!) and ordered the wine pairings to optimize our dining enjoyment. We weren't disappointed. The place is small and the pace is relaxed. We left happy with full stomachs and look forward to a future visit.

The food was terrific and the venue is cute. A bit expensive and they don't seem to portion based on the size of your group, i.e. 2 people or 4 you get the same amount of food just more dishes.

The best thing is walking trough the kitchen to go inside the restaurant. Intimate and cosy. A bit expensive and small portions. Desserts could be better.

The food was amazing and although the wine was interesting in concept it just wasn't very good

Chefs Choice menu of 6 courses with 3 options in each course but wasn't asked which option we wanted, when we did choose wasn't given what we ordered, main course wasn't as described, when we communicated nothing was remedied or comped.

The food was great, the wines too. Just a negative comment about how the wines were served. We were 2 couples doing tasting menu and wine pairing together. Each wine have been poured in only one glass. So if everybody wanted to try wine #1 for example, we had to share that same glass. I've never seen anything like this in the whole world. Is it a way to save money on wines, I don't know. Inappropriate guys!

Looks nice, wouldn't know since their phone number doesn't work to try to call ahead and make sure they can seat you. We arrived around 9:30pm they do not seat anyone after 9pm even though they are open till 11.

Not impressed. We had the Sunday dinner menu and the food (salad greens, pasta dish, and steak) and it tasted very average. This meal was definitely overpriced for the quality and quantity. We were very disappointed since this restaurant has good reviews. Maybe it was a bad night for the chef, but with all the other great restaurants in Portland, we will not be coming back to this one.

S

Sunday supper "family style" tasting menu: my parents, treating us to dinner while visiting from abroad, shelled out $220 (before tip) for four people to essentially share one dinner ($35 per head), with two (more reasonably priced) drinks each. The meal consisted of half a loaf of bread, 11 olives, one salad (leaves, goat's cheese, maybe 12 blueberries, an unknowably small number of hazelnuts crushed) the smallest amount of pasta I've ever seen served to an adult (let alone four of them!), and finally a piece of chicken (leg) each that came with almost two baby potatoes each and a bit from a zucchini that could have done with another few weeks in the ground. There is no doubt that everything was tasty but that was an insulting use of other people's money. Calling this an "Italian family-style" dining experience is extraordinarily misleading - surely anybody who's eaten from family-style (even taster) menus in Italy has an impression of what to expect, and we were not advised that the portions would be so miniscule. I feel like we're victims of a shake-down, honestly; that, or this restaurant is part of a social experiment in Portland to see who actually complains about this stuff. After my Dad had paid and I stopped to give the host the feedback that we felt we'd paid too much, and while she expressed that feedback was welcome, an earlier comment about an Astoria restaurant had expressed the notion that there's something "elevated" about not feeding people enough; in retrospect, I think that was a very inappropriate thing to say to a group of people who were visibly shocked by the portion size, that they hear this all the time and are resolutely unapologetic about the pretentiousness of miniature portions. The service was generally good and warm, but it's hard to separate from the reality of the price; I'm not a big eater, but even I left hungry, even after having eaten not long before. All told, frankly unacceptable, and mortifying to have brought my parents there.

Kind of average food and presentation.. Two waitresses: one pretty good and friendly in a "service" kind of way and the other one on her cell phone right beside and basically blah/not interested.. Very pricy for what you get and empty???!!! on a summer Friday night at 8 when we were there.. Better places in town for sure

I will preface this review by saying my wife and I go to many high end establishments each month, and some are fantastic, and others not so much, but I have rarely left a bad review for a high end restaurant until now. This has been weighing on me for 3 days now, and feel that this review is beyond necessary. So we read the reviews and thought DOC would be a place to enjoy on New Years eve. My wife made reservations weeks in advance..... We arrived 20 minutes early, and as we walked in, we were greeted nicely, but they have no waiting area. We were told that they were not ready yet. So they asked if we wanted to go to the place next door. We chose to wait outside, and seeing this, the people brought us inside to a back dark room to sit. This was fine. Then we were seated, along with the other 20 people. We were brought some drinks and a nice platter of bread and butter. Little did I know, this was going to be the most substantial part of the meal. I asked for some type of non alcoholic pairing with my dinner, but they do not offer anything like that. (Note:It is an additional $75 for the wine pairing) I am going to make a really long painful story very short. The first course consisted of 2 bites.....then we waited 15 minutes ........the second course was a 3 bite salad that my wife and I could not even pallet because of some over powering fish taste. Then we waited 13 minutes for one cold Ravioli (Luke warm)......on and on. Each course consisted of 2 to 3 bites, and we had our phones out in stop watch mode to guess the time between each plate. It ranged from 12 (fastest) to 18 minutes...then you get 2 to 3 bites. Several of the bites were incredible....several were mediocre...and several could not be eaten at all (Salad & Panna Cotta). As we were twiddling our thumbs, we could not believe how this was even happening? Everything was taking so long, and then when the item did arrive, it was so minuscule, and we are so hungry... it was a joke. I understand fancy well presented plates of culinary delight, and this was NOT that. The lack of food, and the horrendous wait time between each plate destroyed the experience. I decided to ask the couple next to us what they thought? The gentleman said "We are going out for a burger after this.." So....3.5 hours....$287 (Without wine pairing)...Words can not even reflect our disappointment. And on top of the food price, they slip in $7.50 as a fee for their employees healthcare on top of the suggested 18% tip. I have no issue with any of that, if the experience is at least good...this was not.

Honestly the top 10 worst experiences of my life. First off, I left just wanting a whopper after spending $200+ on two people because I was still hungry. I'm pretty sure they sold everyone there the exact same thing, they literally serve raw beef. The music was so loud I thought I was in a night club, shouting to talk to the person next to me. They push wine and food sales extremely hard, they're gonna push you until you buy a 6 course platter of wine, and if you just want water (me) they are very judgey. Awful, expensive experience with cold food.

J
June De La Paz

Be careful when making a reservation with a credit card. I cancelled the reservation a week in advance. However, I was surprised when I was charged as a no show. She berated me for not knowing when I made the actual cancellation or who was the one that took the call and asked me to show her proof that I had called (my computer phone records from work don't go back that far). But previous to that, stated her staff called me numerous times before to confirm the reservation. I do have phone records from that time, and no one called me from Portland much less DOC restaurant during that week. When I told her that had her staff called to confirm days prior, I could have told them that the reservation had been cancelled. I asked if she had a record of them calling. That's when she said it was a courtesy call, and not necessarily required. So which one is it, did your staff call or not? I certainly don't have a record of that call? She reiterated how important it was for them as they are a small restaurant, but I don't have any records or messages left confirming the reservation, and she wasn't sure if they left a message either.
