8/28/25: My neighbor and I had stopped by before, but due to remodeling, was advised by the owner to give him an opportunity to take care of us when they re-opened. They have been in business since 1957. Old school vibe, with nice antique décor. Great atmosphere, and limited seating. Customer service is great. You order at the counter, and your number is called when the food is ready. I had a burger with onion rings and a root beer. The food was prepared fresh and the root beer was really, really good. The frosted plastic mug was a nice tough. The restaurant was pretty clean, and the restaurant was steadily busy. They do not have a high capacity parking lot, and street parking can be limited.
Best burger in Richardson! By far our favorite burger spot to date. We’ve been 3 times in a month and that is love! Del Charcoals burgers have such a delicious home grilled, charred flavor that you can’t find anywhere anymore. Simple combinations of fresh crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes and gooey cheese! We will always plan to stop here for a burger fix, always! Staff is friendly and patient with new customers. This place is busy and for good reason, small communal seating inside and small patio out front. Get the onion rings and curly fries, you’ll be back :)
Authentic charcoal fired burgers in basic, authentic atmosphere. Reasonable, friendly and awesome for people watching. On top of all that one of the best burgers I've had in years, if not ever.
We came all the way from Irving to try their famous burgers! We wanted an old fashioned burger and we got an old fashioned burger! This place is amazing! We had the #12 and the mushroom Swiss burger combo with their famous Root Beer! Tried their fried apple pie and churros! Chef’s kiss!! 10 out of 10! All 5 stars! Will definitely come again!
Let's start off with the burger. I got the Texas Cheeseburger Combo. The patty was good, and the sauce was just right. It seems like they used thick-cut bacon, and they give you more than one pieces! The home fries were top notch, crispy, potatoey, and well salted. And people are right about the root beer - I'm not a root beer drinker but that homemade soda was not overly sweet, with just the right amount of flavor - delightful. The place looks so retro and old school, and has all the charm. The owner was extremely friendly and loved making small talk! Overall, great burgers, great fries, great root beer. I'll be back for more!
First time. SO good, they make them upside down :( (vegetables on bottom) had to fix it before pic. I know why they have been open so long. Will be back. P.S. came back for like the 5th time. Burger was not even hot enough to melt the cheese. Will still come back. I just know to watch a little closer.
We got the Texas cheese burger and mushroom burgers and they were soo good. I’d get the mushroom burger again. The meat was cooked to perfection and you could taste the charcoal with every bite. Root beer float!! Let me tell you, it brought back childhood memories!! ALSO 50cents root beer refills.
The #11 double cheese burger was classic and flavor packed with the best mustard along with the charcoal taste of the patty, The #12 Texas cheese burger has the hickory sauce that beats any other bbq sauce- I would go for the added patty if you’re very hungry. The onion rings were amazing, I would do the regular fries instead of curly- or maybe we just got the odd batch. ORDER THE APPLE PIE with your order- they bring it out a few minutes after the burger and it’s the perfect temperature to eat by the time you get to it after your meal as it’s very hot. It was flakey and crunchy on the outside, and gooey spiced apple goodness on the inside.
Del’s Charcoal Burgers is more than just a restaurant — it’s a Richardson staple. Family owned since 1957, when Del Smith first opened the doors, this place has built a loyal following through its dedication to fresh ingredients, charcoal-grilled flavor, and a love for nostalgia. It’s the kind of spot where great food meets great memories, and you can feel the family pride in every bite. We ordered two burgers: the Texas Cheeseburger loaded with cheese, bacon, jalapeño, lettuce, tomato, hickory sauce, and mayo — a perfect mix of smoky heat and creamy richness — and a Classic Cheeseburger with cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, onion, and mustard, which hit all the right notes for a timeless favorite. When it came to sides, we couldn’t decide, so we went all in with fries, onion rings, and tater tots. All three were solid, but the onion rings and especially the tater tots were the standouts — crispy, golden, and addicting. Del’s is flavorful, consistent, and steeped in local tradition. Whether you’re a longtime fan or visiting for the first time, it’s the kind of place that reminds you why classic burgers never go out of style. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I absolutely love this place! The food is always fresh and full of flavor. We had the mushroom burger and the turkey burger, and both were cooked perfectly juicy, well seasoned, and loaded with taste. The quality of the ingredients really stands out, and you can tell they take pride in what they serve. The atmosphere is welcoming, the staff is super friendly, and the owner is very nice, patient, and truly makes you feel at home. The service is quick without ever feeling rushed. Whether it’s lunch, dinner, or just a craving, this is my go to spot all day, every day. Highly recommend it to anyone looking for a great meal
I'm a burger snob and have tried Burger joints all over the country and several in other countries. I rate burgers joints pretty in comparison to the hundreds I've been to. The best two burger joints imo are Alamo springs cafe in Fredericksburg Texas and Grillem All burgers in Alhambre California. Those are the ONLY two I've ever rated 10/10 across the board. So while I'm Dallas today, Del:s was recommended by a friend because they still grill their burgers over a open grill. Upon arrival, i was very happy to see the "hole in the wall" or retro to the place. It brought back memories from when i was a kid to the places dad used to take us. Everything from the old sign listing the burgers and prices to the open grill right behind the register and the seating screamed retro. I asked the guy at the register how long they'd been there and he said 1957. He was one of the few complaints i had about this place. His attitude was one of, "hurry up, you're wasting my time". The look of distain on his face when my son was a little indecisive was very obvious. Zero personality at all. The order took approximately 5 minutes to come out. I ordered the bacon cheese burger with grilled jalapenos and my daughter and son got the plain cheese burgers. First this you notice is that the burgers have the "grilled over charcoal" flavor and i verified that the patties did have the grill marks. The parties were thin but not smash burger thin. The veggies seemed fresh on the burgers. I rated my burger an 8/10, very good but not my favorite. If you like the charcoal grilled taste, you'd probably taste it higher. Son and daughter rated their burgers 5/10 and 7/10 respectively. I think they're just smash burger style fans. My curly fries were exactly like Jack in the box, good but not great. My son's wedge fries were the frozen type. So the fries are nothing special. Prices were actually pretty good for what you get. Overall, I'd definitely go back but my kids, no so much. We gave it the combined score of 7.5/10; five guys is just a bit better and Whataburger about the same. I wouldn't go out of my way to go here but if i was in the area, i wouldn't mind going back. Home cut fries and toasted buns would do wonders for this place.
Great standalone restaurant with ample street parking. Restaurant has been around since 1957 but had been maintained well. A dog friendly patio is available out front. Service could be a tad friendlier. Burgers are charbroiled so they have a flavor your don't usually get. They have a good variety of burgers and dogs to choose from. And don't forget your fried Twinkie, 😊
Cute little place that has been in business since1957. The burgers had a great charcoal flavor. We had the mushroom burger. The homemade Root Beer was delicious! The only thing is parking is limited . There are a couple tables outside. It is worth it! Will definitely be back to try the salmon burger and Philly cheesesteak and onion rings next. We had to get it to go and it was an hour long ride but it was still delicious!
Got the burger and Philly which were both amazing. The burger charcoal flavor was amazing! The owner was working the register and so kind and you could tell he loved his business. I’m obsessed with Onion rings and rootbeer both incredible. Perfect crisp and root beer was homemade. 10/10 Will be back.
Del’s Charcoal Burgers – A Richardson Icon Nestled in Richardson since 1957, Del’s Charcoal Burgers is a time capsule of mid‑century Americana—complete with charcoal‑grilled patties, frosty mugs of house‑made root beer, and red‑and‑white checkered tablecloths. Here’s a polished snapshot of the experience: 🍔 Atmosphere & Vibe • A cozy, no‑frills diner: yellowed menu boards, mismatched wooden chairs, nostalgic décor like old signs, exposed ducts, and life‑sized cut‑outs of Marilyn and James Dean. • The intimate interior means lunchtime crowds can lead to lines and bumping elbows—classic hole‑in‑the‑wall charm. The Food • Charcoal‑grilled burgers still shine—flame‑licked patties, perfect sear, with options like the classic #3 or the loaded Texas Cheeseburger (bacon, jalapeños, cheese, hickory sauce) . • Sides: onion rings are crisp and beer‑battered; curly and sweet‑potato fries are solid. • House‑made root beer is a highlight—served ice‑cold from a dedicated tap in frosty mugs, pouring approximately 150 servings daily . • Oddball treats: don’t skip desserts like fried Twinkies or hot fried pies . Service & Ownership • Family‑owned throughout its storied history, with Taher “Hoss” Hossein carrying forward the legacy since 2003 . • Staff are friendly and efficient—even during peak hours, they manage with quiet professionalism. Community & Resilience • A grease fire closed the restaurant from late April to early June 2025—but when Del’s reopened, it saw record crowds, selling 400–500 burgers per day during the first weekend back . • The restoration kept the soul intact while updating kitchen equipment—a new grill, fryer, fresh paint—and even added a poignant “Fire Fighter Lane” sign in tribute to those who saved it. What Locals Say: A variety of reviews reflect Del’s polarizing charm: “Local treasure. Love the hole in the wall feel. Solid burgers and fries… Charcoal burgers aren’t quite my favorite, hence the 4 stars… but still very good!” “Del’s is legit, reminds me of the way Goffs was back in the day… one of the last breed of burger joints that makes its own damn root beer from scratch.” Del’s is a must food stop for foodies and lovers of burgers. Its flame‑grilled burgers and icy root beer pour a taste of the past with every bite. If you’re looking for flavor with character and are willing to embrace a bit of nostalgia (and elbow room), Del’s is a worthy stop.

Absolutely fabulous burger - the charcoal taste is legit!!! rootbeer was top notch. We greatly enjoyed talking to the owner also. We were only in town for one night - would definitely come again!!!
We went during peak lunch hour and the place was packed! The onion rings and fries were flavorful. The vegetarian burger was not well cooked but the regular burger was great. The root beer float was incredible!
It is a no frills place for good burgers, sandwiches, and hot dog. Overall it is bit expensive for the portions. The hamburger quality is good. Onion rings are excellent but very small portions. Same is true for fries. Overall worth a visit and its upto you if you would like to visit again. I may not. Parking can be a serious challenge. Limited place to dine in.
Came here on a passionate recommendation from a friend who lives nearby. I’d say the food was mostly enjoyable, I had a few irks with my combo though: - the burger was about half the size of the bun, and shifted to one side of it - the guac wasn’t very good - I didn’t get to say how to cook my burger, so it was overcooked for my tastes Overall though it was an enjoyable meal. I don’t like root beer much but I tried it because I’d heard good things about it and I actually quite enjoyed it. I imagine the float would’ve been amazing. Keep in mind that the place is small and inside can only host maybe 8-9 parties. There is some seating outside if you can handle the heat. Also parking seems like it could be minimal on peak days and hours.
First off I gotta say the food here is great. I wouldn't say anything is off the charts amazing but for the price and place, it's great. I wouldn't say anything compare this to a very juicy hearty …

It was one of our date nights so we ran across this restaurant after visiting the neighboring location. The smell of charcoal burger was all over the parking lot so we said we'd come back. When you drive up be aware that the parking is limited and can be a problem. If you have an SUV or large car, your door will get hit since the slots are so close together. When you enter, you took Marty McFly's Delorean and landed back in time. You order at the counter from their menu-pretty basic. They food is prepared infront of you which looks and smells pretty on point. We ordered their basic burgers with onion rings/sweet potato fries. While we were waiting, I used the bathroom to wash my hands. The restroom is tiny and has not been updated since the Carter Administration. The customer service could have been better since the crowd was small. You can see in the picture that the portions of onion rings and sweet potato fries are small for the price. The burgers had a good taste and are equal or a bit smaller than In-Out burgers. It was $28 for 2 burgers/sides and water. It was ok but might not make this place a stop in the future.
I found myself wanting a good burger and came across Dale‘s charcoal burgers. I recall having them a few years ago. It was delicious. However, this time around it tasted fairly mediocre. There was some good qualities to the food. However, the the beef used wasn’t fresh. It taste like a frozen patty. I was expecting more homestyle like my first experience and now I have to find a better burger.#lacking

Are Richardson's locals palates bland? I think so. I came here on Labor Day, which may have been my first mistake. The hype around this place paints it as some old school Texas burger joint worth the drive, but what I got was a reminder that nostalgia does not always equal flavor. I ordered the #12 Texas Cheeseburger combo. It was fine. Solid in that gas station road trip burger kind of way, but nothing memorable. The bacon and sauce carried the entire thing. The fries, on the other hand, were limp, saltless, and lifeless. More like an afterthought than food anyone should serve with pride. Here is where it went sideways. I asked for a chili cheese dog. Instead, I was handed a #4 burger and then gaslit into believing that a butterflied hot dog on a bun somehow counted as what I ordered. It did not. It was kind of insulting, lazy, and quite frankly, a bit absurd. The service? Straightforward to the point of indifference. No welcome, no energy, no trace of giving a damn. I even mentioned it was my first time there, 0 excitement on their end, 0 expectations on my end. If you do not want to work on a holiday, do not. But do not give vapid interactions to the customers who showed up expecting what the place claims to be. The one saving grace was the lemonade. Genuinely great, bright, and refreshing, a diabetics dream. But for $21 with no option to tip, I walked away feeling like I had paid to be part of someone else’s bad mood. Del’s might have been something once, but today it felt like a relic coasting on reputation. Borderline a waste of money.
Food is very good. service is very bad. Food ready but no one told me or called me to counter. Two times this has happened. Cold food is not what I ordered
