Opinions de Catahoula Coffee Richmond
Came down to visit relatives, family drank de-caf (yuck)We checked near by and found this coffee shop. I can’t complain really great coffee . We were able to enjoy our stay knowing there was great coffee around the corner.
Nice casual vibe for a Sat hangout. They roast their own coffee plus have a handful of good things to eat like croissants, cookies, quiche and vegan muffins. The place also hosts great community events. Recently they held a customer appreciation day where there were crafts, an animal petting zoo for kids, live music, wood fired pizza and microbrewed beer.
I got chai once, they were nice and friendly. I wanna go again SOOONNNN. Everybody talks good about it. There’s plenty of street parking; if they got rid of the parking in the back and fenced in a cozy little patio seating thing with large plants and maybe a water feature—dat be da BOMMMBBB! ! ! If you choose to give a thumbs-up 👍🏽 or not, I hope you found my review helpful!
I had to come back and edit this review – I already put in a 5 star rating, but today one of the baristas walked around and asked people individually if they wanted more coffee. I've never had that experience in any other casual coffee place! They also have great taste in music. Love this place.
I stumbled upon Catahoula Coffee while on a work trip to Richmond, CA. I ordered an Americano, it was excellent. The roast was not bitter at all but rather rich, and very smooth. The staff was very friendly and the patrons were very pleasant. There was no where to sit, so I took my drink with me. I wish I had a coffee shop like this near where I live. Keep up the good work.
Everything they do here is fantastic but lately their horchata lattes got me stopping by a little more frequently than I should. EDITED FOR CLARITY: In my opinion, the horchata latte is a combination of sugar, caffeine, spice and pure joy. I don't usually add any sugar to coffee or lattes but this one is a special treat.
I do not rave about much but this coffee shop is a diamond in the rough! The energy is remarkable, the service is prompt and genuine and the coffee...it's the absolute best I've ever had! Not to mention the feel good designs they topped my mocha off with:) You will love this coffee shop. But be warned you may not be able to drink Starbucks sour burnt coffee ever again...I'm just saying;)
Great coffee. Beans are roasted lighter than you might expect, and to great results. I drink it pour over, and give whole beans for gifts. Abby half-caff is a mix of Ethiopian and decaf-Ethiopian. Great for decreasing caffeine intake, why my personal favorite for making iced coffee.
Great coffee and Vegan food options
When coffee is good - it is rare. When you find good coffee - you tell everyone - because everyone deserves a good cup of coffee. This, my friends, is not good coffee. It is Awesome Coffee! It is so good, I would still go there to order one if the line was a out the door and down San Pablo (that has never happened, but to make a point) I would wait. Also, the Cold Brew is great - and I am fussy. As a former Barista, constant coffee fanatic, if I could give more stars - I would! If you have not gone here... GO!
Excellent espresso. Had a cortado (basically a short latte), very good. Highly recommended.
I’m very grateful to have Catahoula as my neighborhood coffee shop! I’m pretty picky about my coffee and theirs is always on point. Roasted weekly and the staff is always patient with me to select the freshest blend available.
Live super close & love it here! The staff always in great spirits. I always get an iced Cubano latte with Oat or Almond milk. Also, had the famous "Mexi-mocha" with all the fixings...(whipped cream/chocolate drizzle). (Iced)..
A gem of a coffee shop. They roast their own beans. Delightful and simple beverage options. Great breakfast treats for the belly. Very positive atmosphere and staff. Dog friendly too.
Got carry out coffee, first rate service, top quality coffee, atmosphere was good too. Highly recommend!
This small mom pop coffee spot is one of the few gems in Richmond. Always smiles always same quality ans great prices !!
If you’re local or in the area, Catahoula Coffee Co. is a must try! The staff is friendly and coffee is tasty 🙂 I love the Horchata Latte paired with the Simifreddi’s Morning Bun *chefs kiss*
Found this place in an Eater article about best coffee in the East Bay Area and it was right on the money. I'm extremely picky about cinnamon in food (typically it's over used and takes over the entire flavor of whatever it's used in) but I took a chance on the Mexican Mocha here and would do it a thousand times over. Some of the best coffee I've ever had overall (and I'm from Seattle so I've had a lot) and the only beverage with cinnamon in it I've ever liked. Absolutely worth the detour.
Coffee: ***** I am in LOVE with the Lola bean! The flavor of this coffee is just what I have been looking for. Medium, rich, smooth and homey blend! When used for expresso shot with steamed milk it is quite a comfort flavor. I highly recommend this blend and am looking to trying others but for now this is my go to! How I use: Grind fine and make a double shot expresso Steam oat milk to about 140 degrees top with cinnamon powder Staff:***** Every time I have visited the Richmond location the staff are always welcoming and kind. Location:***** The inside of the coffee shop is adorable! Products are well displayed and I like the wall of coffee cards! overall 5 * for this place!
I started coming in here last year on a whim. I’ve been drinking coffee for over 50 years. I was a die-hard Peets fan for years. Note that I said “was”. From my first cup, I found like I had rediscovered coffee. This is by far the best coffee in the SF Bay Area. Their daily coffee is rich, earthy, woody, and nutty. Complex. Doesn’t taste like burnt dirt like Starbucks does. It is now the only coffee I buy to keep at home. I am particular fond of their Lola blend, ground for pour-over cone drip. The staff is so polite, always with a smile. Their location is not in the best place in the world, but their coffee is so good that it is changing the face of the community. I’ve gone in there and seen retired people, hipsters, families with kids, police officers (THEY DON’T DISCRIMINATE AGAINST THE BLUE UNIFORM! THANK YOU), gangsters, blue collar, white collar all putting their differences aside to share in the treat that is Catahoula.
I just started coming to Catahoula... Mexi-Mocha is my favorite! Just been here a month now and I've been coming here almost every day, well at least 4-5 times a week! I get my breakfast burrito with my coffee. People are awesome and friendly! Oh, you get a star when you get a coffee and collect them for a free coffee. Every barista and managers at the best!
This place makes great strong coffee. I usually order the cubano and it's perfect every time! I love to get their breakfast sausage sandwich. They also offer a variety of pasties which are fresh and delicious.
They recently got delicious vegetarian breakfast burritos! And the mochi donuts are also wonderful.
Amazingly smooth coffee! I stopped in to grab a cup & breakfast burrito before a hike...it was the best decision. Fresh & and delicious - this place definitely set the pace for a great day.
Just stopped for a quick coffee and bite on my way home. I like Starbucks and Pete's, but I really like supporting local businesses like this sweet little coffee house. Coffee was lovely, the hand pie delicious, the bathroom clean, the decor fun, locals leisurely. Pro parking tip: when arriving from the highway, drive past the "exit" driveway immediately beyond the coffee shop and enter in the next driveway after the merry maids. Or maybe the coffee house could do better with signage. 😁
Great place, great espresso drinks. Not cheap, but that first sip (and every gulp after that) is worth it. I am greeted with smiles at 7 a.m. on Sundays. I consider myself lucky to live nearby. We no longer patronize Peet's and have long abandoned Starbucks.
Bought the decaf bundle (Decaf and Abby) online and am enjoying both in my lattes.
I’m on a mission to find coffee shops that make a proper cappuccino. Over the course of my life, I intend to find at least a handful in the Bay Area. Catahoula knows darn well how to make a great cap—it was smooth, light, and not in a 10 oz cup—Giddy Up! Thank you to the baristas at Catahoula for making my morning a happy and wonderfully caffeinated one.
Got stuck on train late at night in Richmond, stayed at a sketchy motel in the midst of urbanization, woke up and walked a block to this place— lifesaver! Good strong coffee, nice people, nice space. Yeah, this is what I love about the east bay.
New favorite coffee shop. Smaller in size but still comfy & seems like a cool place to chill out. Had the Horchata latte & bacon breakfast burrito. The latte was delicious. Espresso tasted smooth & the flavoring was sweet but not over powered. Loved it. Breakfast burrito was premade & reheated but this did not jeopardize the integrity & flavor of the burrito. It was so good. & Over affordable comparatively, especially compared to other small businesses coffee shops. Service was quick & the staff were friendly. Look forward to this being one of my spots. Definitely recommend!
Cool coffee options. I enjoyed my coffee with perfect cake and I’ll definitely come back!
This little coffee shop is amazing! They roast their own beans right next door. If you're ever in Richmond, you gotta check it out. I got a Horchata latte, and wow! So good, you could taste the Horchata in every sip. Definitely worth a visit!
I live out of State, but visit my Family frequently. This is always my first stop the da6 after traveling. The vibe, music, friendly atmosphere, food and of course THE COFFEE! Always Friendly!
Fantastic almond milk matcha lattes!! Very kind staff! I made a mistake in what I ordered and so the barista made me another drink free of charge this morning. He was so kind! Everyone there is marvelous!
The horchata latte is amazing. This is pur favorite coffee spot.
The vegan sandwich was yummy. I am in 😘 ve with this place.
A cozy place to enjoy a really good cup of coffee in a relaxed setting. The drinks are smooth and well-balanced, and everything feels carefully made. It’s an easy spot to unwind, catch up on work, or have a quiet conversation.
Quick stop for a hot drink on a cold day. We were greeted with a smile. Ordered the mexi-mocha with regular milk. We were served rapidly and we were on our way within 4 minutes. Mexi-Mocha is the way to go! They had a few seats and a bathroom that was out of order.
If you want to get an amazing pumpkin spice latte worthy of a Gilmore girls binge watch order here no matter the weather they have iced or hot they are both good. I even loved the little design they gave me
This place is vibing! Delicious coffee, energetic atmosphere and also good space for connecting to internet and getting work done. I compare coffee shops based on the decaf oatmilk latte. It was dense, strong and flavorful. A great gem in East Bay. The staff were also very kind, friendly and cheerful. They also have some mixed tastes that I haven’t tried and would like to give it a shot next time!
Good coffee though I usually only ever get the cold brew for 5 bucks. They have them readily available so it's a quick order and it tastes good with some oatmilk. Food wise, they have some breakfast burritos that are pretty good (bacon or pork) that hold a lot of heat when they warm them up for you. Super clean place, nice outside seating area. Closes at 4 unfortunately which is kind of early but it's fine. Entrance to the parking lot is before the exit you see next to the building. Like right after mezcatl the store nearby
Great coffee, and a fully vegan sausage egg and cheese breakfast sandwich - McMuffin style. Also a variety of vegan pastry options as well. Nice atmosphere and locally sourced coffee
My latte and my green tea was delicious, but the croissant was a little to hard, but I put in the microwave for 10 secs!! And was perfect!! Excellent customer service. I love the coffee smell the entrance of the local . Lots a variety of coffees
Fantastic place to stop for coffee in Richmond. Great tasting espresso, sweets, all in a very cool setting, accompanied by great service. Can’t ask for more than that!

Very great coffee, vibes and local food. Super cool merch as well. I appreciate their commitment to our community!
Fabulous coffee roastery and cafe. The baked goods were scrumptious and complemented the Mexican mocha very well.
One of the best coffees around. Delicious pastries. Quick service. Nice staff
Great coffee and teas. There are an assortment of pastries/muffins to select from for food. Nice little shop with additional outdoor seating across the parking lot next to the building.
These guys. Love that they put out healthy snacks just as snap benefits are ending. They are the heart of community. And their coffee rocks too.

Tasty coffee, friendly staff, fast WiFi. Came here to try the coffee and get some work done. The coffee is good, the WiFi is fast but unfortunately the music was a bit too loud for me to be able to work. The reason they only get four stars is they didn't have any ketchup for their breakfast burritos. What kind of place has breakfast burritos but no ketchup? It's like serving coffee but not having any cream and sugar. I'll be back for the coffee though.
So far, it is a fantastic place with a great service. Their coffee is amazing and I appreciate that it is possible to purchase half a pound of each of them so I can try them all (slowly:-). Their coffee is expensive, although really good...okay, perhaps the best I have ever had (Brazilan, Peru and 3 Amigos...are so far my favorite). Some cost $18 and others $23 per pound. This is a lot. And for this, I take one star away. Sorry.
I like their coffee. I used to like the atmosphere but it's dead without seating and people reading the daily paper. Not sure if that's coming back. We're 4 days from lifting the mask mandate and they were kind of hassling a lady who couldn't find her mask. It was a 3 star experience but I'm adding an extra star for what it was like pre-pandemic.
Been coming to Catahoula since it opened and service was outstanding . Love the coffee love and environment. Family friendly. Until today, the staff was rude and coughed them talking about me and thats rude and disrespectful and changes the atmosphere.
We’ve wanted to try this place ever since we bought some at Whole Foods. It was really good! My wife got the Mexi-Mocha and I got the Horchata latte. Both were good but I liked the mexi mocha better.
Great Richmond Cafe. One of very few. Good espresso. Indoor seating. Few baked goods. Could do with some savoury snacks. Nice wall art.

Mexican Mocha was good option but the bakery items are not great the danish was soggy after warming and not good.
It’s a shame that this is the only independent coffee place in the area. I like this place. However, when this place gets really busy, which it often does, they have messed up my order a few times. Unlike other coffee shops, they don’t fix this problem. Once even saying, “No, that is what you ordered.” I would expect them to do having better service paying these prices.
The coffee was good and reasonably priced, but the coffee shop was really loud. Most of the people were either talking loudly on their phones (for at least 30 minute calls) or having loud work meetings (other people commented and went outside because it was so loud). It’s too small of a venue to allow people to work on their phones.
I heard mixed reviews about this place & decided to try them out myself. I ordered the Mexi-Mocha iced latte with an extra shot of espresso. I’d give it a 2/5, what saved the review was the service & vibey aesthetics.

The coffee is good, but the service is weirdly slow. I think the barista doesn’t know how to handle multiple orders (getting them going in parallel) and when doing them one at a time, things get very backed up. And the place is tiny and awkwardly laid out, so people bump into one another.
Decent spot. They won’t wash out your reusable cup for you. I imagine it’s a county policy. The staff has never been nice to me. They look at me and take my order in a cold demeanor and then look at each other in a great mood. I don’t enjoy this on the few minutes I have for a break. I ask myself why I advocate for small coffee shops and spend my money here to show up and feel that im bothering someone.

I grew up near this place and used to come here with my mom a lot when I was little and I loved it. I went back the other day and it was totally different, it was all bourgeois and annoying and the coffee is way overpriced. $5 for an iced latte? I was disappointed and sad that the place I used to know is gone now. It used to be a good part of my neighborhood but now it seems like part of gentrification in Richmond.
Walking in the store you see it’s very bare and a bit aged but gave it a shot after hearing great reviews. I waited in line for a long while just for a simple iced latte and I most got milk. I asked the woman to remake it but she said she could not do to the line unless I wanted to pay and wait again in line ugh….
EDIT After experiencing a serial, unmissable pattern of cold shoulder, nasty looks, and passive aggressive engagement from folks working here, I’ve stopped coming here. People used to be really friendly. I feel almost certain that the issue is the fact that I wear a mask (to protect my health and the health of other disabled people in my community). The vibe shift happened right around the time that we experienced the great unmasking. I’ve heard about people who encounter anti-mask hostility, but I have not experienced it much locally, with Catahoula as the one great exception. I used to be a regular. My profile picture on Google was taken at Catahoula. It used to be a local highlight for me, my little happy spot. Sad to have lost this. I tried to stick with it, I have gone back dozens of times to see if maybe it’s in my head. It’s not. I’m done now. It was a nice community spot while it lasted. Coffee is still good. I know because occasionally someone gifts me a takeout. I have lost my will to go in myself tho. It’s just too demoralizing. ==== Great community vibe here. Loving the rainbow foam art this month!
I love this coffee shop except for one big problem: I can’t hang out in it because of an extremely potent air freshener that has been in use every time I’ve been in. I don’t understand why they would want to cover up one of the best smells in the world, but it’s SO strong and I can’t wait to leave once I’ve placed my order. It’s a real shame because there’s no good coffee shop in the area to sit and work…if. Catahoula is reading this, please consider abstaining from this air freshener…I can’t be the only one bothered by it and it keeps me from frequenting your business.
EDIT 6/26/24: As a frequent customer of this establishment for over 10 years, it saddens me when a bad experience taints my perspective on them. My partner and I have always bought pound coffee bags from Catahoula and today was no different. In all my years of going there, we were always offered a free cup of coffee with each bag of coffee purchased. It’s actually one of the main incentives of going there rather than buying online or from a third party. For some reason today the cashier not only declined to offer me my free cup of coffee but also gave me attitude about asking for the second one (my partner was waiting in the car btw). I told her we’ve always been given two cups and I was under the impression that it was a cup of coffee per bag bought. She said that the other cashiers shouldn’t have done that. I’m sorry but I’ve never seen this woman before and suddenly she has the audacity to say that everyone else in my decade of patronage has been wrong? Well I guess I don’t see a point to making the special trip here if the experience is so unpleasant. Been going to Catahoula for years, I always recommend their coffee to friends too. Highly recommend Lola or Butkus blends!
This place needs to rethink how they are serving their black coffee, it takes a long time in line to get such a simple cup of black coffee so I believe they should have a plan for those who stop by in a hurry for a quick caffeine fix. Maybe a self serve option to improve functionality would change this scenario. Anyways the coffee is good, the long wait isn’t.
The people are not polite at all. The barista ask me to abandoned the place after my order was ready. I have my mask on and I was just sending an email from my iPhone there were no more customers inside the store so the 6 feet distance was not an issue. I was not even using their wifi connection. I explain her I was about to leave but just finishing an email and she told me again that I was not supposed to stay in the place. Of course I let her know I will leave ASAP I finished my email and also I remember her that I was not even eating at the location and that I had my mask on. The team make you feel like a homeless more than a customer. So nop! No more money for Catahoula! They need to elevate their customer service to match their product quality.
Grumpy staff, long lines, coffee is nothing special and just a teabag plus hit water cost four dollars. The coffee is nothing special. No stevia sweetener (duh! even Starbucks has stevia)...just a few cramped places to hang out. “Serving breakfast” as one review said is a stretch. They will sell you a pastry. Have not been to the new one in Point Richmond. Maybe that is better. But I just don’t get why everybody is so thrilled about this company. I think people are just being gracious because it’s local. Gracious or hoodwinked and hypnotized.
Employees act like they don't want you there even if you're polite & generous. They also don't care about the quality of the drinks. Coming here gives me a terrible feeling
Waited in line 5-10min, got to the register and ordered two sandwiches to go. Wait another 5min for my order, the guy who took my order gives me only one sandwich. I tell him that it’s missing a sandwich, he proceeds to tell me that I need to go all the way to the back of the line to order again. I ask him ‘really?’ because it doesn’t really make sense to make me wait in line again after he forgot my order, and the same dude just hits me with ‘yeah I’m busy right now I can’t help you’. Customer service is trash, that employee couldn’t care less that he made a mistake. Mistake itself is no biggie but how he handled it is pretty unacceptable when you charge $7 for a muffin.
The rudest manager I have ever encountered. She spoke in a manner that was unprofessional and lauded in front of other customers. When I approached her outside to ask for her name, she was so impolite and pointed her finger at me as she spoke. Her name is Adriana. Even though it is a great coffee, I would never return, even if it is located across the street from my home. I will share this information with my neighbors as well so they do not have to go there in the future.
It doesn't deserve even half a star, the service is terrible, they serve you reluctantly, you feel humiliated, it seems like they are giving you things for free and even then they don't have good customer service, what a disaster, I don't recommend it, they should classify the working staff better
Noticed that they use Hershey syrup for their mexi-mocha. YUCK! Full of corn syrup and for the $$ they charged it’s absolutely horrible to be serving that to a “third-wave” coffee shop. Starbucks serves better mocha.
I stopped in on 8/9/19 to buy a pound of coffee. The aroma was delightful! I was already looking forward to my Saturday morning coffee. There were plenty of bags of coffee available but no description of type of roast. I drink my coffee black and strong and no sugar so I didn't want a light roast. There was also no one behind the counter to help me. I admit, I only waited 5 minutes before walking out empty handed. I see no need to give them another try.
Coffee is really not good here. We ordered cappuccino and Mexican mocha and definitely bad flavor. We just didn't finish our coffees! Their sugar roll was good.
There coffee prices increased rapidly compared to other coffee shops in the past 5 years. They are blaming tariffs but they were increasing prices anyways every year. They are keeping fliers near the entrance to Snitch on ICE if they are in the area. Crowded parking, especially difficult for handicapped people if they wanna back out once parked. That local feel is gone.
I've been wanting to try this place for a while and I finally did after my sister has been raving about it. This first experience left a bad taste in my mouth and although it didn't affect directly, it made me feel bad for a customer. First, the coffee is okay, not the best roast I've had so far. Second, the atmosphere is good and there is plenty seating if it's not busy. Third and lastly, receiving drinks can be very confusing. They either called out your drinks by name or by the name of the drink which a hundred other people have ordered. We almost took other people's drinks and vice versa. This is what I witnessed because of that. An elderly black man ordered a simple coffee and was waiting for a bit. He wasn't disturbing anyone or causing any trouble. He was patient. Again, because these baristas don't really call out names for orders, he mistakenly almost picked up someone's coffee order and when he did that, I'm assuming the owner of the coffee shop who was wearing a green knit poncho immediately raised her voice at him and said "That's decaf with half and half, yours is not half and half!". I was immediately appalled. I hope she remembers that encounter as much as I do and feels bad about it because I do. The owner and the baristas have so much attitude here. I get that owning a store and working in the food service is tough but there's no need to be rude to people who are trying to support your business, especially if they're just trying to get a cup of coffee.
