OMG!! This was some of the best food I've had on the state of Texas. The steak was seasoned perfectly! It was like I was eating feathered beef, it was so juicy and tender. The loaded mash potatoes and the green beans and shrimp were awesome!
My wife and I have been here twice now, we stumbled across Johnny's while visiting friends in the area. I can't say enough about how great the food has been, the wait staffs attention to the customers and the atmosphere at Johnny's as a whole. After our first experience I mentioned this place to co-workers from the Dallas area and was told Johnny's is a Texas institution! I'm hoping to be able to take in one of Johnny's music shows on another trip to Texas. Some good acts have been through here. If your thinking of going to Johnny's, do yourself a favor and stop on in, with a big appetite!
Their mesquite grilled cheddar burger was one of the best burgers I've ever had, if not THE best. Crazy good. Staff is very nice. Atmosphere is great. Loved it. P.S. special thanks to the Harry’s on the Creek bartender. She told me to go here, since they don't serve food and a place nearby was closed.
Classic steakhouse along the freeway and across from a donut shop. We enjoyed their chicken fried steak and a potato. Their hash brown casserole was especially good. They have a large dining room and back patio where they host many concerts. The restaurant is a short trip across the road from Salado and along the route between Waco and Austin.
my husband and i have been coming here since we first met, we love it! the beer is cold and the food is good, what more can you ask for? highly recommend the bbq 'tater, the loaded fries (add the chopped beef, it's worth it), and of course, anything with brisket. staff is friendly- and don't forget to say hi to the cat outside! the venue out back looks neat and lowkey. one of these days we'll make it to one of the concerts, haha.
I'm from a small town in the atmosphere here reminded me of home. Lots of real folks eating real food. My wife had the chicken fried steak with tater tot casserole and a salad. Our daughter had the ribs and brisket two meat plate with french fries and coleslaw. I devoured a medium rare 16 oz ribeye that was most excellent. Oh and I had two cold beers.... Everything about it was just great. We appreciate this place. Tonight the fries were just so so. Our waitress forgot about us several times including our to-go order of brisket which should take about 2 minutes but ended up taking about 20. That being said, this is one of my favorite spots and we're going to be back soon. June 2025 came back for amazing cheeseburgers.
2 things happened here on our first visit. First, we found my husband's greatest burger. And 2nd I met a dessert I've never thought about my whole life and now will never stop thinking of it. I always laugh when I pull into a gravel/dirt parking lot because I know I'm in for a treat. Johnny's is a vibe Y'all! You wanna eat in a sit-down restaurant with awesome vintage signage. Go ahead. You wanna head over to a super fun cantina setting and get the same food? Go ahead. You wanna do all that AND see a concert? This is the place. The Mesquite Burger quickly became something the husband couldn't stop talking about. To quote " 100% a 10 out of 10." The fried cheese curds were delicious. I fell in love with the pecan cobbler. I've never had or heard of pecan cobbler. I'm a pie freak so I figured it would be comparable. Wrong! It was amazing. It was sweet. It was gooey. It was cobblery. It was a perfect ending to a really great lunch at Johnny's. Shout out to our wonderfully helpful server, Faith. She was awesome.
A truly Texan BBQ stop! I had the Mesquite Smoked Ribeye and the Brisket Plate. Both meats were fantastic, by cut and cooking quality. The hand-cut fries were fresh, and my friend said his baked potato was perfectly cooked, with salt on the skin. Every room is filled with Texas memorabilia, giving the restaurant a feeling of rich and vibrant history. All employees were friendly and fast.
A nice clean outdoor area. Above average music. I would like to " Thank " the restaurant staff members for helping me when my diabetic emergency arose the night of the concert. My only concern was that there was a difference in what the charge for the concert was on the Facebook page and what I paid at the gate.
Went by here on a whim and based on Google reviews. Sooooo glad we did. We ordered the chicken fried steak and bacon wrapped jalapenos for appetizers. The jalapenos were perfect, crispy bacon, cooked jalapenos, cream cheese and brisket inside... Wow, just wow... My wife and i split the full order of chicken fried steak and it was perfect for two. She got a loaded baked potato as a side and I got loaded mashed potatoes. I'm being honest, this was the best chicken fried steak I've ever eaten. Tender, good taste, thick gravy, ZERO tendons found in the meat, just perfect. My loaded mashed potatoes were great as well. The only ding if there has to be one was the my wife says her baked potato was not cooked enough and kind of tough. Everything else was awesome. I travel all over Texas and the States for work and try new restaurants all the time. I have about 8 state wide in Texas that I consider a Texas-Gem. Based on tonight, this could easily go on that list. I've got to go twice more and try some other items to confirm before I do a full write up and or video but man, this place is great so far. The atmosphere is good, the wait staff was nice, prices good, and the food thus far, off the charts good. I can't recommend this place enough.... It's that good!
Great service and delicious food. Small restaurant that's gets pretty crowded but you can usually find a table. Lots of parking right across the street.

I absolutely love Johnny's!! Everything I order is a huge portion and their bbq is great! Its a steakhouse, so the bbq is not top point like a pure bbq restuarant, but it is way above average. …
Awesome place for food and music events! Definitely recommend for both sit down meals and live Music and cold beer.
Amazing big o burger and yummy French fries I also got a peach cobbler a lot of parking great for big rigs

This is the kind of place where you walk in and immediately trust your life choices, because the smell alone is basically a handshake. The ribeye is the move here, and it’s the rare “perfect” that actually earns the word: well-seasoned, beautifully seared, juicy, and tender in that way that makes you pause after the first bite like you need a moment of silence. It tastes like someone back there respects steak and doesn’t believe in overcomplicating success. Then you add the BBQ plate to the equation and suddenly you’re living in the best of both worlds, smoky, hearty, and satisfying, the kind of food that makes you sit back and wonder if you should cancel your plans and just commit to being happy right where you are. It’s comfort food with confidence, served in a spot that feels like a local secret you’re lucky to be in on. If you’re passing through Salado, do yourself a favor and show up hungry; Johnny’s will handle the rest.
Only putting a four star and a three-star on the food because the brisket is just not consistent. If the brisket was consistent every time I went I would probably show it more. But it's a 50/50 shot whether you're going to get good brisket or okay brisket or bad brisket. Considering it's a barbecue joint, probably got to get that part right.
Overall, a good spot. Brisket was great! Portions on sides were, especially the premium one i had wason the small side and were nothing to write home about like the tater tot casserole. Green beans excellent. Potatoes salad was okay. Bread was good. Sweet tea hit the spot. I will be going back to try some different dishes.
This wasn't bad for little ol Salado! I ordered the BBQ chopped brisket loaded potatoes, which were tasty. However, they weren't served hot—just warm—and the cheese never really melted. If you prefer BBQ that leans toward the sweeter side, this dish is definitely for you. Overall, it was decent, but it was a bit too sweet for my taste. We initially ordered the double chicken fried steak but received a single instead. Fortunately, our waitress was quick to remove the charge from our ticket, which I appreciated. The steak was somewhat tough, but the green beans served as a side were amazing. The banana pudding was a little different. It was mixed with cottage cheese and probably not the best in my opinion. Overall, I would consider giving this place another try.
Today was a different day for the establishment. The bbq was awesome EXCEPT the chicken. The bbq chicken was tough so tough it could be a bouncer at the local club! The Server was great, and the atmosphere was awesome! It feels as if the food was hurriedly made and served. Food is usually good but not today!! Maybe today was just an off day for the kitchen..
The all-star of the meal was the pecan cobbler. Never heard of it before, but it was AWESOME! The bread slices were nice too, had a “fresh-baked” feel. We also had the pulled pork (not bad, but came sauced, so no control of that), brisket (was ok), sausage (delicious), cheese & jalapeño sausage (not as good as the regular, but not bad), turkey (disappointing, looked processed and tasted like dirty smoke), potato salad (just ok), and mac & cheese (creamy, but not a lot of flavor). Service was great, responsive and respectful.

Had our company Xmas party here. Steaks were cooked nicely. The servers were friendly but the food runners didn't know who ordered what and we all got served at different times. They also ran out of mashed and baked potatoes and green beans which was disappointing. The fact they cook everything in the same oil, even the chips, really limits my wife's menu options since she is allergic to seafood. Nice venue and atmosphere but probably wouldn't go back.
A very popular eatery in Salado. The setting and service is good. The food is fair and the the prices are high.

PROS: Our waitress. She was attentive, welcoming and awesome. CONS: There is a sign that states, be prepared to wait, however it makes it hard to be patient when people who come in 15 min after gets served first. We waited a good 1hr 45 min for food. It was nasty. The sauce was good- vinegar based. But the BRISKET was SWEET and cold! Hubby ordered steak n shrimp with mac and green beans. All cold. Other members ordered catfish, chicken fried steak etc. All food varied in temp, and we bland. All the SnP, and sauce didn't help. Maybe burgers are their thing?

Been living in Temple for 10 years and have been wanting to try this place. Almost $50 for two cold cheeseburgers and cold fries and sodas. I wish I knew they served cold burgers I would have never went! In Temple we prefer burgers warm fresh off The grill! I sat at table 15 with my wife and definitely will never be going back even with a comp! I don't understand how a place can survive that can't even serve a proper burger and fries!
Probably one of the worst meals we’ve had in a while… everyone was really nice and it was extremely busy. This seems like a hometown favorite however if you are from out of town and expecting great flavors and jam packed Texas BBQ this is not it… we started off with the poutine fries and they were okay but the gravy had no flavor I assume because it’s a premade mix that got watered down. My spouse and me got a gift card here from our parents so we were eager to eat at this steakhouse. We ordered steaks with sides. Both our steaks came out well one ordered a medium steak and the other ordered medium well. My spouse didn’t want to send his back but needed sauce on his steak to be able to finish. I choked twice on my steak and we said that was enough. The macaroni and cheese made us so upset it genuinely is Kraft or velveeta. Nothing wrong if you enjoy that but for a restaurant I expected more. The mashed potatoes had no flavor due to the gravy not tasting like anything. Our meal was $80. We had a $100 gift card and just gave the waiter the rest of the $20 because we won’t come back. Disappointed our parents paid for this meal to this place. Don’t waste your money if you expect great taste and flavor. If your ok with hometown and premade gravy or velveeta Mac and cheese this is ok. However the turkey 1/4 was very good but came out cold it was supposed to be bbq but didn’t have any bark or anything but was the best thing we ate tonight.
