We made a 6:15 pm reservation on a Saturday to celebrate our 20th wedding anniversary. The restaurant was busy, but not loud. We could talk comfortably at a normal volume, which already put this place ahead of a lot of spots on a weekend night. Service set the tone immediately. Our server, Mario, was excellent. Kind, professional, attentive without hovering, and his recommendations were spot on. On top of that, the entire staff signed an anniversary card for us, which was a genuinely thoughtful touch. The manager, whose name I unfortunately did not catch, stopped by our table, congratulated us, and treated us to a dessert and two glasses of champagne on the house. That kind of hospitality is rare and it mattered. We started with the deviled eggs. They were overfilled in the best way and topped with maple bacon that complemented them perfectly. We also ordered a bowl of clam chowder. It was not overly creamy, had small chunks of clam, and was well seasoned. All it needed was a little black pepper, which is an easy fix. For entrées, my wife ordered the redfish and I had the Maui steak. The redfish was fresh and cooked perfectly, not dry at all, finished with a light lemony butter sauce. The couscous was properly cooked and well seasoned, not bland, and the asparagus had a subtle grilled, almost barbecue-like flavor that worked really well. My Maui steak was a 16-ounce boneless ribeye in a tangy marinade with hints of garlic and pineapple. The balance was excellent. Tender, juicy, and cooked a true medium rare. It came with smashed potatoes that were creamy and smooth without being thick or dry. Exactly how they should be. Dessert sealed it. The carrot cake was outstanding. Warm, soft, moist, not overly sweet, with fine shreds of carrot and nuts throughout. Honestly, it is arguably the best carrot cake I have ever had. Overall, this was a great experience. Service was top-notch. The manager makes regular rounds to check on tables, which shows real leadership. There are cards at the front listing the manager, assistant manager, and chefs by name, which signals pride and accountability. The only downside is the interior lighting. It is slightly dim and takes a moment for your eyes to adjust. That said, the staff more than makes up for it with warmth and professionalism. Big thanks to the entire team, and congrats to Mario on his engagement. We will absolutely be back.

Really nice place. I had a really terrible day and just wanted a good meal. I sat in the bar area by myself. Bartender guy was super nice. Had a really great NY strip and roasted Artichokes. This place, and especially the Bartender made my day alot better. Thanks so much for cheering me up a bit!

I can not say one single negative thing about this place. Absolutely delicious, fresh food, and incredible service. The plates are huge and well worth the price. The restaurant itself is gorgeous. Incredibly high-end atmosphere and the perfect place for date night. The mac & cheese was unlike any I’d ever had before. It was more like a creamy noodle casserole and was perfectly crispy on top. It was so good! They should rename it so that more people will order it! I typically wouldn’t order mac & cheese at a restaurant but I was SO happy I gave this one a try. The spinach con queso was also very good. Perfect consistency. Not congealed or overly-thick like a lot of restaurants that serve queso. Great experience overall!

Food was good! Fresh and tasty. Restaurant clean . No sticky floors. Staff was professional. We had Patrick the waiter! He was professional and friendly. We went at 4pm today. Perfect not crowded!! Best time to go. Waiter refilled our drinks. We didn’t have to ask . Best restaurant i have been to . We eat out quite often and this was best restaurant. Definitely coming back.

One of my favorite restaurants, so we try to go when we’re in a city that has one. Service was great and speedy. The Mac and cheese was amazing, tomato soup here is always so exquisite. The chicken and lasagna plate we ordered were just ok. I really miss the chicken Milanese they used to have.

Everything was great as usual. Our waitress was very attentive and food was excellent. Tried the steak maui and it was excellent. We brought our two oldest granddaughters before they head back off to their universities and my oldest grandson who is 11. They enjoyed it very much as well! The only thing that I was not aware of until my wife told me when we were leaving. That the hostess at the front when we entered told her that we had to leave by 5:30 and could not stay later than that time. Our reservation was at 2:30 and we arrived on time. Why she said that to my wife I have no clue but was very unprofessional and it really upset me. I hope this wasn't a racial issue. We love J Alexander's and have always had great experiences.

This is a fantastic J. Alexander's. I haven't been to one in years. The food and service were both great! We were in town for New Year's and couldn't get a reservation, so we decided to relax at the hotel and order take-out from here. Our Uber driver left half of our order, and the manager made it a priority to get our order to our hotel even though their restaurant was packed for New Year's Eve. He even added some desserts. We will be back if we visit San Antonio again!

I took my team here for dinner and they never disappoint. The chicken and capers is excellent. Their bar selection and service is top notch and finishing the night with warm carrot cake was heavenly. Five stars isn’t enough for the food, service and atmosphere. I am a regular and they never disappoint.

The special Burrata and Mozzarella appetizer was delicious!! The tomatoes were so fresh my husband doesn’t even like tomatoes and he ate 3! Lol He also got the special BLT and I got the club sandwich and they both were amazing. The bread from the appetizer as well as both of our sandwiches was so fresh and soft!! And the house made chocolate cake was to DIE for!!

We recently celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary at J. Alexander’s, and it was an unforgettable experience from start to finish. The atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and perfect for a special occasion, but still relaxed enough to feel comfortable. From the moment we were seated, the staff made us feel valued and truly went above and beyond to make the evening special. For dinner, I ordered the New York Strip steak, and it was cooked to perfection — tender, juicy, and full of flavor. My wife had the crab cakes, which were perfectly seasoned, crisp on the outside, and loaded with fresh crab on the inside. We also enjoyed a fresh, crisp salad that was simple but elevated, a great complement to the main dishes. Everything was served hot and beautifully plated, with clear attention to detail. The biggest surprise of the night came at the end when the staff brought out a slice of their famous carrot cake — on the house — to help us celebrate our 20th anniversary. It was hands down one of the best desserts I’ve ever had: moist, rich, and generously layered with frosting. That thoughtful touch truly made the night memorable. J. Alexander’s combines outstanding food with exceptional service, making it a go-to for both everyday dining and life’s biggest celebrations. Highly recommend! Alexis was a great server.

Steak (NY Strip) & Fries tasted fantastic. When they brought the steak out the waitress asked if I could verify the steak was cooked to my liking, it was not. So they took it back and made it right. That goes a long way with me. Crab cakes were good. I don't understand why crab cakes is not on the menu at the Quarry location on the east side. Can you fix this? Team you have to try the ice cream cake. YES it will make your back big, but your taste buds will be happy. It's Oreos, Snickers, vanilla ice cream... chef's kiss. Great service and food at the La Cantera this weekend though.

This was truly the best Valentine's meal I've ever had! The food was absolutely amazing. My New York strip steak was cooked to perfection.. exactly as I requested, medium done. Every bite was bursting with flavors, and the juices brought out the richness of the steak wonderfully. An unforgettable dining experience!

Excellent night out with my wife and daughter! Food was great, but steaks could have been warmer when they came out, but overall very flavorful and lovely. Sides were excellent. Mac and cheese, fries, and the beans were very delicious. And the chocolate cake for dessert was perfect! Service was very attentive and enjoyed our dinner experience quite a bit. Will be back.

A perfect place to have a great salad and not mention appetizers. My best friend took me to dinner around 6pm & we ordered the tuna stack to start off with and it was 10/10, so yummy! We ate at the bar for a more fun experience. For dinner I ordered the Thai Kai salad and it was a lot. It was delicious. The ladies at the bar were very helpful and friendly.

My family and I visited the restaurant Tuesday afternoon and we had the most wonderful and enjoyable experience. The food was absolutely delightful, tasty and cooked perfectly. I had some amazing cocktails like the lemon drop martini 🍸 that our amazing waitress, Adalyss, so kindly recommended. Speaking of Adalyss, she was a ray of sunshine. ☀️ She was the best waitress! Always waited on us with a genuine smile, helped make great suggestions in regards to the menu, and was super attentive to our needs. She had great people skills and you can tell she was happy to help in any way she could. This made our dining experience all more great! I want to make a special mention of Archie, the general manager. He made sure that our visit was a pleasant one. He was very welcoming and made our visit unforgettable. What can i say other than wow! I came here with my family given we love the Quarry Location and boy was this Place On Point! The Restaurant looks amazing and the food tastes even better! The music is calming, and the mood they set during dinner is superb. Our Waitress Trinity left a little to be desired, she may of been having an off night but i will not hold the restaurant accountable on her merits. The Seared Tuna, The couscous, and the Prime Rib were Divine! Our Desserts “Pumpkin Pie / Carrot Cake” Were the chefs kiss to a wonderful meal! This place is a Very worthwhile experience we will not soon forget! Great Date Night and Family Spot! 10 out of 10! I definitely recommend! Hopefully trinity is having a better day the next time we visit.

We went there to celebrate my mother’s 82 Birthday, when we arrived our server presented my mom with a Birthday Card signed by all the servers, very nice gesture. Service was great, very friendly staff, food was good, but 3 of us ordered the Prime Rib, and when they arrived they were room temperature at best, so we had to ask to have them reheat, which of course cooks them a little more. Rest of the dishes were fine. Definitely recommend the place!

We ate at J. Alexander for the first time in December. The prime rib was about a 6-7 out of 10. It was okay, but nothing worth ordering again. The rest of our party enjoyed their meals. I'd say J. Alexander is slightly above average. Better than Saltgrass or other chain like restaurants, but definitely below places like Capital Grille or Ruth Chris, but I guess you only get what you pay for.
