Opinions de Born & Raised San Diego
“Absolutely incredible evening at Born & Raised—hands down one of the best steakhouse experiences in San Diego! The food was nothing short of amazing from start to finish. Every dish was perfectly executed, bursting with flavor, and presented beautifully. The dry-aged steaks were tender, juicy, and cooked to absolute perfection, and the sides (those hash browns and uni spaghetti if you tried them!) elevated everything to another level. A huge thank you to Chef Andres and the entire kitchen team—the creativity and precision in every bite showed real passion and skill. You could tell the heart and expertise that went into crafting such an outstanding meal. The staff was equally impressive: attentive, friendly, knowledgeable, and made the whole night feel special and seamless. From the warm welcome to the tableside service touches and spot-on recommendations, they made us feel right at home in such a stunning, upscale spot. If you’re looking for a memorable dinner with top-tier food, great vibes, and exceptional hospitality, Born & Raised is a must-visit. We’ll definitely be back—thank you for an unforgettable night! 5/5 stars all around.”
This is a must try when visiting San Diego. Located just across from Little Italy, Born and Raised is the perfect spot for a date night or celebratory gathering. The outside is modern and deco while inside is a trendy take on a speakeasy. With a fully stocked bar and live view kitchen, you will have a great view no matter where you are seated. The enjoyment goes beyond appearances. Service is top notch. If you have the pleasure of dining with Scott, you will be well versed on pairings and available specials. When the food arrives, you will be pleased with both presentation and taste. As delicious as your meal will be, try to save room for dessert as it’s a must!
Traveling from Utah and we stopped in for a drink because of the beautiful atmosphere. Phillipe was AMAZING! As a bartender myself I was thoroughly impressed with his demeanor and customer service! He was attentive and great to talk to. His recommendations were PERFECT! He definitely made our trip, thank you!!
Had a really good time. Steak was really well cooked and super tasty. Was not disappointed at all. Only flaw would be having a reservation and still having to wait 30 min but other than that will not complain. The sides were super tasty and the atmosphere was perfect.
One of the best restaurant meals I have ever had -- anywhere on planet earth. Quite possibly the BEST wait staff and service I have EVER experienced. Seriously. I can't wait to visit again.
Born and Raised was a fantastic experience overall. We had a reservation but couldn’t make it to the rooftop; however, the interior design is beautiful and totally makes up for it. The food was excellent, we ordered the Caesar salad, which was prepared in front of us and tasted amazing, and the steak was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. The staff were super friendly, the vibe was chill and cool, and everything felt relaxed yet upscale. Highly recommend it.
My brother‑in‑law was in town and said he needed an amazing steak. Say less — we knew exactly where to take him. Born & Raised is our go‑to spot for steak lovers and out‑of‑towners. In my opinion, it’s a true San Diego staple. It sits right in beautiful Little Italy. The rooftop has a great view of the San Diego cityscape — it really shows off how gorgeous this city is. The service and attention to detail are next level. Every fixture is custom and intentional — exactly what you expect from a Consortium restaurant — but this one is easily one of my favorites. We ordered the bread, the tableside Caesar, a steak sampler, the ribeye and a few sides to share. Everything was incredible. The bread was warm, flaky, and buttery. The steak sampler was a fun way to try a few cuts, but the dry‑aged steak was the standout for me. The sides rounded out the meal perfectly. We each had a couple of cocktails, all beautifully crafted. Yes, it’s on the pricier side, but the experience is absolutely worth it — especially if you want something memorable and uniquely San Diego.
Born and Raised offers a truly memorable dining experience. The Steak Diane is a show in itself: it’s prepared tableside on a cart, cooked to your preferred doneness, and finished with an outstanding sauce. The Wagyu beef platter is ideal for sharing and does not disappoint. What stood out the most for us were the escargots, beautifully served inside a bone marrow canoe, an unexpected and delicious highlight. The desserts at the end were also a pleasant surprise. The atmosphere is exceptional. The terrace offers stunning views and is well heated, making it comfortable even in cooler weather. On top of that, the service is impeccable: attentive, professional, and genuinely welcoming. Overall, a restaurant that delivers not just on food, but on the entire experience. It was my in-laws wedding anniversary and they gave them at the end a beautiful card with a picture of us that the host took with an instant camera. Such a nice touch to end a great dinner
Stopped here before the Lacrae concert with @healingground.online . Fantastic atmosphere, its like great gatsby combined with west coast rap (eazy e / ice cube). Classy, food that was amazing and the service could not have been better. Great experience- oh and don’t forget the carrot cake ( savecroom, its a must)
I wasn't born and raised in San Diego; however, I have lived in San Diego since 2000. I've been to many restaurants in SD but hands down, please, Born and Raised is clearly the best restaurant quietly waiting for you explore. This was our first time to visit; we celebrated my husband's birthday. The moment you walk in the ambience and design set the vibe for you - its classy, more covert, than cocky. We waited less than 15 minutes to be seated (btw it was a Friday and the downstair bar was packed!) We were led upstairs where another bar was full, and our table was perfect. We had a view of Little Italy. We ordered drinks and Art, our server was knowledgeable, charming a good listener. I order a drink, not on the menu, and they delivered! My husband ordered the Whiskey Smash, I asked for a Rosemary Gimlet, and it was perfect! Dinner was delicious. My husband ordered the pork chop, and I ordered the lamb. The portion size of the food and the drinks were generous. Surprisingly the drinkware was actually full size and not the common, small ,4 oz glasses you find at other restaurants. We ordered a second round of drinks and when it came time for the dessert, Born and Raised elevated their status in my opinion! A birthday dessert was a simple macaron and a candle, but it was the third round of drinks what blew us away. We ordered the Espresso Martini with tequila reposado - fantastic and the design on the foam of the drink said Happy Birthday and mine was a design of a rose! These artistic touches made our night! Our server and those circulating around were so attentive and yet, not overbearing. Considered this restaurant to be your new sanctuary! Thank you Born and Raised you have elevated the dinning experience!! We will be back.
Had dinner at Born and Raised tonight and everything was amazing! The ambiance and décor are beautiful, and the service was outstanding from the hostess to our server and the entire staff. We ordered the sampler plate with a few sides and it was absolutely delicious — the steaks were cooked to perfection and honestly some of the best we’ve ever had. We left full, happy, and already looking forward to coming back!
The bone marrow with snails and the dirty hashbrowns were absolutely amazing. We also had the steak sampler and the Mac&cheese and both were great. Service (Mauricio) was excellent, all on point. We didn't care for the baked Alaska, we could have left without it. Atmosphere was also great, not too loud. We easily could keep a conversation going. We were celebrating our birthdays and everything was just perfect!!!
I love the burgundy snail with bone marrow. The snails were on top of a huge bone. It was so delicious. I wish they could give us a large portion or more bread. I had the steak sampler which contains four types of steaks. The best is supposed to be Japanese wagyu beef which has the most fat. It tastes similar as the beef skewers.
BREATH TAKING IS THIS PLACE. there are just some experience in life which you have to try, This place is one. They bring it all to you! All to you. Wagyu, table side cocktails, phenomenal dish service, Thanks Joe ( Smart kid, can't wait till he's a server). They made me feel so special (My first time). You need to talk to Karla She will give you the lowdown on the other sister restaurants that they have. Where to go for what and what kind of setting it is so you know what kind of environment you're walking into. But the star of the show, the star. Now listen closely. You want to sit in Israel (Izzy) section if it's your first time or if you haven't had him. He makes every detail about you and your table. Not only did he walk us through the menu but he gave us a thorough recommendations that were delicious. And I'm not talking about the ones you get off of TikTok that everybody else gets. No, his recommendations were good and delicious. He made our night. We, want to say thank you so much. So, having him as a server is just a delight on a great evening and a rememberable memory. Thank you born and raised. I will definitely be going to some of the recommendations that Karla gave us. Please start selling the macaroons by the dozen or half dozen. They were the best I've ever tasted kudos to your bakery chef. I think we probably would have bought a dozen to take home.
We celebrated our anniversary here and this was the first restaurant to actually read and take time to acknowledge my selection on open table. They wrote us the most adorable card! Our waiter was so fantastic and so attentive! The food! Oh you MUST get the Mac and cheese you will not be disappointed! The filet was delicious and well prepared I normally don’t like a lot of pink in my steak but it was cool so good that I said okay I’ll dive in and try this! All in all a fantastic place to have a delicious steak, divine Mac and cheese, and to be treated with attentive care from all staff!
Born and Raised was the pinnacle of our amazing visit to San Diego. Paxton was our server and seemed psychic with his food recommendations. The steak sampler was our best choice. I loved the dry aged NY strip which they age in house. Of course my wife liked the Japanese Wagu. The building is one of the most beautiful places I’ve ever dined! The water closets were painted by a local Barrio Logan auto painter. The dining room was over the top art deco. Think Great Gatsby. Jose the manager took hospitality to the next level. More like ten levels up! We have never been treated so well or felt so at home than we did in his care. Every barstool, table, napkin, plate and, yes, toilet seat had the Born And Raised touch. We have been to top notch restaurants around the globe and this was by far the best dining experience we have ever had. Thank you so much Paxton and Jose for the night of our lives.
When you come here, you absolutely must order the steak, but I highly recommend trying the hash brown. It is far exceeded my expectations. Additionally, I think the carrot cake is a standout. As someone who isn’t usually a fan of carrot cake, I found that following the staff’s recommendation was definitely the right choice this time. The cake is fluffy and the cream’s sweet-tart balance is perfectly executed. Even though I was already quite full, I couldn’t bear to leave it behind and ended up taking some home to enjoy slowly later.
Stopped by for a night cap and the drinks did not disappoint. Must try the espresso martini! Basic, yes, but the whipped cream top was a unique and it wasn't overly sweet

I had an excellent experience at this steak house while travelling on business. The service was excellent. The vibe was amazing. And the food was all great! I would go back every time I’m in town.
A MUST in San Diego Fabulous food, excellent service, inviting and luxurious decor. Daniel the manager goes above and beyond to make you feel welcomed!!

Very nice place, great atmosphere, albeit the food and prices are a bit pretentious. Some stuff is priced well (like the waygu for instance) and some stuff is overpriced (oysters, lobtster). I have traveled the world and can say that their seafood selection is good but way too overpriced for what it is. 6 oysters for $25 is not worth it. You can get a dozen oysters for $18 in New york or 20 oysters for $10 in colombia. Same thing with the lobster, $42 for 1 claw and half a tail in lukewarm butter.. Very disappointed there. On the east coast lobster is $37 for a full lobster at fine dining establishments. Beef wellington was good but was not as good as Gordon ramsays Wellington at hells kitchen. The standout dish was surprisingly the shrimp toast, would definitely order that again, and id like to try some of the tableside service dishes. The herb butter was very good as well. I have no complaints about the japanese waygu, the service, or the atmosphere. All these are 10/10. Was a fun experience to try once but if im spending this much id rather spend $700 at sushi maru for an absolute stunning dining experience.
Visited the popular Born and Raised restaurant last night. Started off with some bread and their French Onion soup. Bread was very good, french onion soup was nothing special. It tasted like every other french onion soup. For the entrée, my wife and I went with their steak sampler and butter poached lobster tail. Steak is what I would of expected it to be. It was delicious. However, for $169, definitely not worth it. Rare society has a similar entrée but its cheaper, bigger portions, the meat is better and comes with several dipping sauces to try. As for the lobster tail, the server forgot it and when it finally arrived it was rubbery and over cooked probably because it was forgotten. The sides we got mac n cheese (bar far the best I have ever had), potato puree and brocolini. Potato puree was simple but good. Do NOT order the brocolini. It was gross. The sauce they put on top did not go with it whatsoever. Would of been better just tossed in some garlic butter with salt and pepper to taste. Great atmosphere, tables are spaced apart appropriately. Over all 4 out of 5.
Amazing atmosphere and city views from the 2nd floor. The architecture is beautiful and amazing, great vibes. Our waiter was a little cold and should’ve moved to the other side of the table to grab things instead of leaning over several people. The food is just too good, very good beef Wellington, appetizers, side, and delicious desserts. The bar makes incredible cocktails, great job! And the bathrooms are top tier. lol. For real tho.
This is a really solid steakhouse on India St in Little Italy and I would say it’s one of the best designed restaurants in all of San Diego however, Steak 48 has much better steak. I had a great dinner and experience here, but I felt that B&R steaks were underwhelming and lacked a lot of flavor. It also had a peppery and smoky flavor to it, which I didn’t like as much as an original char or a buttery flavor. I say this as someone that gets steak out often, from San Diego, but have been living in LA the last 6 years, so I’ve been spoiled by the options. I felt the best part of this dinner was the design of the restaurant and just the vibes, but the food was not the best of the three dinners I had while visiting town, which is disappointing given how expensive this restaurant is. Parking in this part of town is extremely difficult so the best option would be valet across the street for $18 or a pay lot. The hostess when we entered was not very polite or welcoming however, our waitress was extremely polite and accommodating. We sat upstairs at one of the circular tables facing out towards San Diego and had beautiful views of the downtown. We loved the ambience, and that truly was the best part of the meal. We started off with the French Onion Soup and thought that was really great. It was made with red onions, which was a different twist and was well balanced in flavor. Next we ordered a special which was the Iberico Ham and asked to be expected that was great. I have been to Spain quite a few times and it really reminded me of what I had while visiting there. Next came to Steak Tartare, which I enjoyed, however, I thought it was more of a four out of five. I appreciated the mustard flavor component, but I just felt it lacked really deep flavors. For my entree I chose the Bone-In Ribeye which was 20 ounces and was honestly pretty good but not that great. It really lacked a lot of flavor to be honest. I was really surprised at how little flavor it had. There was also a smoky component to it, which I did not really enjoy. The size was great but for the price they are asking I felt it could’ve been a lot better, with less fat on it too. Overall, a nice option especially for a date. It would be a place to bring an out of towner, or IG aficionado, or something along those lines. For the best steak or a really upscale work dinner option I would choose Stake 48 in Del Mar or possibly Cowboy Star in East Village now that Del Frisco’s left.
Born and Raised has excellent food - every dish we tried was phenomenal, and it features inventive desserts with fun flavors. You really can't go wrong in ordering. Personal favourites from our dinner included the Japanese A5, the pear cheesecake, broccolini and the polenta that comes with the meatball appetizer. The servers were incredibly professional and made it a great experience. The only downside is that the ambiance can be very hit or miss. The dim, moody lighting is great, but the restaurant can be very loud. They also wouldn't seat us until everyone had arrived, which while I understand in theory, with a party of about ten people there was nowhere adequate to wait. The menus are also huge and we didn't really have anywhere on the table to set them down between the glasses and lamps. All small things, but at such an expensive meal, they make a difference.
Service was impeccable! Scott was great, very personable and knowledgeable of the menu. We began with the bread and the yellowtail crudo. The bread was the oerfect amount if garlicly and fluffy. I don't do raw fish, but tried the crudo and it was so tender! Our entree was the 20oz bone in ribeye medium rare. It was cooked to perfection! We did try all 4 of the sauces but honestly the dry-age steak needed no extra flavor. For our sides we had the mushrooms in a delicious sauce, the broccolini with a spicy chilean sauce, and the Mac and cheese. For dessert we tried the carrot cake and the cheesecake. You cannot go wrong with either. The carrot cake had a wonderful creamy cinnamon taste. The yuzu cheesecake had a distinct but not overpowering citrus flavor. The decor was very fun. The music was a tad loud, it was difficult to hear the sommelier and our server when he was explaining the desserts. The lighting at the table was slightly too dim, making it a little difficult to see what we were cutting while eating our steak.

Went there for drinks only. We were seated at the bar upstairs. Nice atmosphere and attentive service. Large selection of drinks. Prices a bit on the higher side.
Did I eat in an alternate universe? Reading other reviews here, I truly don’t understand why other people are raving about the food. Service The service was the highlight. I am a thirsty man, and I’m not too proud to say that my water glass was filled many times throughout the dining experience. Waitstaff were polite and attentive. Food This is where Born and Raised really disappointed. We started with the Parker House rolls, table side Caesar Salad, and the Uni Pasta. The rolls were good, but all warm bread is good. The salad was…fine. The uni pasta was oddly sour, small, and underwhelming. Next, we got filet and New York cuts, the dirty hash browns, and the mushrooms. The filet was a little dry and not very flavorful. The NY was a little better, but it usually is a better cut than filet. The mushrooms were forgettable and the hash browns were crunchy but I didn’t like that the crème fraiche was only on the top layer. Overall, there were no standout flavors or dishes. Nothing felt special or, honestly, much better than something I could make at home. I came in with an empty stomach and an open mind, but was left disappointed. Atmosphere Nice but also loud. Our seat was on the first floor and it was hard to hear each other. Recommend? No. And I will not be returning. This feels like fake-fancy food. The prices are high but the quality is medium. Go to Mister A’s or Cowboy Star for a better steakhouse experience.
