Opinions de El Viejon Seafood San Diego
Delicious, fresh, baja style seafood/mariscos centrally located (I don't have to drive to Chula!!). Ceviche, campechana, and birria tacos were bomb. Assorted house made salsas along with several bottled salsas made the experience a treat. Parking is tough in that location due to the other restaurants in the strip mall, there is dedicated parking for order pickups in front of the restaurant.
This place came highly recommended as a new spot for fresh raw seafood in creative Asian/Mexican fusion takes. We had dinner plans elsewhere but I tacked along an order of fries when someone else in my group was making a take out order, thinking it would just be a snack to carry me over. Its an $18 dollar order of fries - I should have thought more about that. Twas delicious and definitely entree sized. Great mix of seafood and flavors - will definitely be back to sample other dishes.
Amazing fish tacos!! I had the El enchilado and the grilled fish. Both cooked to perfection with added sauce, cheese and cabbage. El enchilado was spicy and perfect. My favorite. Old school music playing and the environment vibe was very chill. Only negative feedback I have is the parking but that's a hit or miss depending on the day of the week. No wait time unlike Kura revolving sushi that had a 2 hour wait time 😵
Got to try these guys out. From what I was told by the server they have been open for about 10 days. It's an open dinning area, bar seating along one side of the restaurant. I got a shrimp cocktail and two birria tacos. I was very happy with my food. Will be coming back with some friends to try more things on the menu. They stock Holy Paleta as dessert.
First time here, been seeing their posts all over IG and have been wanting to try it out for a while. I ended up getting the tower which is like seafood heaven. There was everything from shrimp, tuna, scallops, octopus and more. If you love seafood then you must try this out. Next time I will try the aguachilles. They also have different seafood tacos and even a marisco ramen! The only negative thing I can say about this place is the parking because it's in a busy plaza with a small parking lot so be advised to find parking on the street and just walk there. You won't be disappointed!
This place has some of the best tacos I’ve ever had before. We ordered the shrimp ceviche and some of their tacos. The octopus taco here is hands down amazing! The grilled fish and Ensenada tacos were also really good. The tacos have a great ratio of seafood to toppings. I would highly recommend the spicy version of these tacos for the spice lover. I would come here every week if I could!
Wow! Wow! Wow! We were in PB and in the mood for ceviche. The place near us ended up being closed ( google said it was open, so lesson learned is always call first). So we eneded up driving to this place. Sooooo happy we did!!! Wife had Aguachiles (red and green mix) said it was one of her favorites. I had 1 queso taco (which has shrimp), 1 mango habanero which had al pastor and 1 pork belly taco. OMG! By far the best tacos I have ever had. The queso taco had the right amount of cheese and shrimp (sauce was not hot). The pork belly was the hottest one and the meat was crispy (exceptional). The mango habanero was al pastor and perfectly cooked. We had a mango margarita which was perfect. Did not have the flavor of alcohol but definitely had it a perfect mix. My wife happens to be an aguachile aficionado and said it was the best she has ever had. I usually wait a few days to write my reviews but could not wait. This place is clean, had good vibes and a good mix of tropical music. The cooks were friendly and the cashier was exceptional, and knowledgeable. We are so glad we found this place.
Update: went again today with some family and got birria tacos, birria nachos and fideo seafood soup and it was all very delicious. Can't speak for authenticity, but the food was really delicious. My husband and I went halfsies on the shrimp ceviche and the birria nachos. Mmmmm. So much great flavor in both dishes, but the birria nachos really were the bomb and they were more filling too. First birria experience and I haven't found another like it yet! And that pepper on top. No idea what kind of pepper it was but it was pickled and not spicy like I thought it'd be (just took a small bite in case because spicy isn't my thing and hubby finished it off). Husband kept talking about how much he liked their hot sauce with his food. I'm heading to bed right now but salivating just at the memory of the food! It did have a small kick but I could handle it (disclaimer: I'm somewhat sensitive to spicy. Husband couldn't tell at all lol)
Not sure how describe the place, it's in a strip mall, but everything around here is. The signage stands out if make the turn into the super crowded parking lot. The music was great, loud enough to cover the din of the customers, but not so loud you can't have a conversation. The overall business is small, but delivered on huge flavors. I had no idea what a Las Aguachille was, but the description sounded amazing, so I ordered a half order, glad I did, no way I could eat it all. I got it with black sauce, black like the devil's soul and just as hot. I'm sweating as I type this, my tongue is burning and salivating with each bite. It's delicious, cucumber, red onion, radish, lime juice, and shrimp, with a nice dose of avocado. It's amazing, my mouth is cooling down and the beads of sweat are limited to my upper lip. I will definitely try it again before I leave, red sauce next time. I also wanted to try a single Birria taco, but they had a variant called the Manolarga, it's queso birria taco with with an octopus tentacle, lightly fried, perfectly seasoned, thrown in for good measure. By God, it measured up perfectly. The tender pulpo blended perfectly with the Birria in the taco. I ended up using the consume that came with the taco to help put out the fire in mouth. Overall it's a great place. I'm here for three days, I will be back with my fellow work travelers tomorrow.
super good. everything was delicious, with a hefty portion that matches the higher prices. the interior is nice and you sit on bar stool type seats. seafood tacos were phenomenal and so were the fries 🫶 the drinks are really pricey it costs more than 2 dollars for a refill when the cup is 50 percent ice. not a big deal tho. overall really good experience
It's a must try for the birria tacos! The green aguachile was on point as well as the micheladas. Was so excited to hear they opened a spot on Convoy, only downside was the parking. There is a parking structure near by but you have to pay. I took 1 star off for super minimal seating. It's a very small place & fills up quickly.
Great find on convoy. Had the la coqueta which had shrimp and octopus and loved it. The seafood was soft and the citrus base was very tangy. Also had their birria tacos and they were bomb. Octopus taco is yum too. It's mostly self-serve , so more of a very casual environment but not the cheapest option on convoy. Highly recommended.
Great tacos with bold and creative flavors I've never had anywhere else. The fish ceviche bowl is huge and is a way higher ratio of meat than any other ceviche I've ever had. Definitely worth the price! Guacamole was fresh and delicious. Red house salsa had great flavor and plenty of spice (I love spicy foods). Will definitely come back and try some other options! 4 stars on the atmosphere because the music is loud for such a small place which isn't my style for lunch and made it more difficult to have a conversation than need be.
Omg my smoked tuna and grilled fish tacos were SO GOOD that I forgot to take a photo 😂 SO much flavor, amazing seasoning, just go! And the girl that attended me was awesome, amazing customer service in both English and Spanish 😃🇺🇸🇲🇽
Excellent food, great atmosphere, and many menu options for those that don’t fancy seafood! Food was quick and incredibly flavorful.
Ordered their Cali burrito and it was fantastic, could tell the steak and all the other ingredients were very fresh. Would absolutely recommend
High end seafood quality; complex and sophisticated -authentic Baja flavor. If you want to impress any seafood gourmet connoisseur, this is the place. The Best Octopus Tostada I have ever had! Good portions. Quality and fresh ingredients. Salsas are authentic and spicy. Parking lot can be crowded.
Loved Viejon Seafood! The fish taco, spicy octopus taco, and shrimp tostada were all incredible. Fresh, flavorful, and perfectly made. Each bite had the perfect mix of spice and texture. The staff were super friendly and gave great suggestions that made the meal even better. You can tell they care about their food and their customers. I’ll definitely be back with friends next time!
Staff really strives to make sure everything is done well, from flavors to presentation, you won’t be disappointed. Best ceviche I’ve had in San Diego so far. Pork belly taco was perfection!!
The fish tacos are excellent. The batter is so light and fluffy, it’s like biting into a cloud. The tacos were big and two were enough for me.
Best meal I’ve had in a long time. I’m visiting from Chicago and this is now one of my favorite restaurants in this city. I will be back! We had the aguachiles verdes, oysters, al pastor taco, and taco de asad. Yum yum yum! The music was a vibe the entire time. Quick and professional service, too!
We stopped by El Viejon last weekend, and the food was absolutely delicious. We had chilaquiles del Viejon, ahi tuna tacos, and grille fish tacos. All the seafood (octopus, shrimp, and smoked tuna) in the chilaquiles del Viejon is super fresh. I would opt in for the octopus tacos next time though since the soggy tortilla chips are not to my liking. Otherwise, it’s definitely worth it.
This little hole in the wall restaurant sells amazing food. We had birria tacos 🌮 the serve them with broth on the side. My husband ordered La Torre he loved it. It is pretty big for two people. The parking lot is small so be ready to wait a little.
I’m giving this restaurant a well deserved five stars for an incredible dining experience last Sunday night! We arrived around 8 PM, and the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting with just the right amount of buzz, perfect for a cozy evening out. The place wasn’t overly crowded which made it easy to settle in and enjoy the meal without feeling rushed. For my first course I decided to try ceviche for the first time, and it was an absolute revelation. The dish was bursting with bright tangy flavors, perfectly balanced with a fresh zesty kick that danced on my taste buds. The seafood was impeccably fresh and the citrusy marinade had just the right amount of acidity to make every bite refreshing and memorable. It was such a delightful introduction to ceviche and I’m already looking forward to having it again! Then came the seafood tacos and let me tell you, these were some of the most elite tacos I’ve ever had. I ordered three different ones: a shrimp taco, an octopus taco, and one that combined both. Each was a masterpiece in its own right. The shrimp taco was plump and juicy with a subtle sweetness that paired beautifully with the vibrant toppings, fresh cilantro, a squeeze of lime, and a creamy sauce that tied it all together. The octopus taco was a standout with tender perfectly cooked octopus that had a slight char and a smoky depth I couldn’t get enough of. The combo taco was the best of both worlds blending the textures and flavors in a way that felt indulgent yet balanced. The tortillas were soft, warm, and just sturdy enough to hold all the generous fillings without falling apart. I ended up eating way more than I planned because every bite was so flavorful and satisfying. This place is a gem and I can’t recommend it enough for anyone craving fresh bold seafood dishes!
I'm not a big seafoody, but I love this place, says alot. Me and wife ordered El viejon Fries came out very crispy with very light but tasty batter. It had smoked fish, shrimp, pork belly! It may have had scallops too, but it was out of this world. Wife also ordered an octopus plate, she said it taste good, along the pork belly taco, fish taco and cheese birria nachos. Yeah, over ordered! I think this is officially my 3 top Mexican restaurant/ shop in SD being here for 40+ years. My 2 kids had side of fries, demolished it and they are picky. When we left, manager ask how was food, we are coming back soon (=.
Came here for the food. But the vibes took it to another level. beer and tacos and reggaeton music! Head boppin while in line! Food was great! Could have a wait because they won’t serve you unless there is a table available. Habanero sauce was excellent! Cant go wrong with seafood on a Sunday night!
First time here, and definitely won’t be my last! Can’t wait to come back when I’m near this area. Service was super fast, very impressed with the wait time. Seating was somewhat limited. But you won’t be disappointed with how fresh and delicious the food is. Their serving portions were very generous. Everything on customers plates looked delicious. We weren’t sure what to order so we went with -El Viejon Seafood Tower. Wow!!! & OMG!!! Yummy and so fresh and delicious. It was more then enough for two people. If we lived near the area, this would be our to-go-spot. Highly recommend.
Limited parking outside the restaurant but cars do move in and out quickly enough. Not many tables in the restaurant but there’s some tables outside the restaurant too. The seafood tacos are really good and the octopus is soft and flavorful. Drinks are good too.
Staff was very attentive. Food was so delicious!!! We ordered the "El Viejon Nachos" so tasty, savory, cheesy, creamy, crunchy......... I basically found my go to seafood restaurant.
Seafood tasted so fresh, like it was caught that morning. Oysters were shucked on the spot for oyster shooters. Loved the spices on the beer. Finger-licking good! The margaritas were perfect, not too sweet with lots of flavor. Will definitely be returning to try the rest of the menu!
A bit out of our way to try this place but well worth it that we'd definitely want to come back. Best fish taco I've had this side of the border. The fish ceviche was also very fresh and flavorful. My wife loved her ahi taco and the suerito was a great way to wash everything down. The birria sounded good and I look forward to trying it next time. Great ambiance and very friendly staff too.

Parking was a bit tight but place was very clean and service was good. Got the smoked fish tacos, Ensenada tacos, and the soup. The fish tacos were a good size and the fish was cooked perfectly. The smoked fish tacos had a really good smoky flavor and the fish was tender!
Food is excellent like always.. To bad they didn't have any Caguamas
OW! Not sure what took me so long to finally eat here, it's fantastic!(Guess when I'm in Convoy I always end up with Asian food) El Viejon is an excellent spot for Mexican seafood specialities and of course tacos. Friendly service, and casual but clean, modern and very artistic ambience! It also has decent seating, isn't chaotic and crowded like The Taco Stand. Though parking is chaotic in Convoy these days. $4 Al Pastor(pork)...the cheapest taco here is actually 2 tacos! You get 2 per order! The pork is tender and tasty, but the tiny pineapple chunks make it fruity and flavorful! $6 Surf and Turf is huge! Generous amount of steak and shrimps, and the chipotle aioli sauce. The flour tortilla warm, soft, and lovely. $10 Ahi Tostada is topped with fresh hearty cuts of ahi tuna, avocado, and more a top a crispy blue corn tortilla
Great place for Mariscos, the food is delicious, and the people were so nice. We tried the aguachile in a couple of different sauces (black & green) and the fish tacos. Highly recommend stopping by for some mariscos, and some good vibes 💙

A good find was out running errands and came across this restaurant. Was surprisingly good for being a small little hole in the wall place and they serve alcohol. I had a spicy octopus taco and fish taco. They were both good but liked the flavor of the fish taco better. My son had two pesto, octopus tacos and was the best thing I tasted. My husband had two beef tacos he dipped into a soup. We also enjoyed ceviche and guacamole as appetizers. Everything was delicious.
Went in to dine for some fish tacos and some ceviche, They were super good! The cashier/server (he was a tall guy) was so nice and helpful when we were ordering. Will be coming back soon!!
Really decent! Highly recommend asking for the tortillas extra well done. They have Bohemia beer, which you don't see all the time, as well a huge selection of imported beers. Salsa selection is very limited, the focus more on a variety of common bottled salsas, so that was my least favorite part. Kitchen seemed pretty clean! Music was blasting!
Came here on a whim for a late night snack. We wanted to get the seafood tower but the price has gone up to $45 which doesn’t make sense for just the two us so we got the ceviche ($17) which was equally delicious. At 7pm, they have tacos and techno menu. The music changed from hip hop to techno. We ordered Al pastor, birria and lengua. Meats were soft, tender and flavorful. They serve breakfast items until noon and have Taco Tuesday specials. I would come more often but parking is such a pain in the free lot. You’ll have to go to the paid parking structure and I recommend parking on the top outdoor level where it’s more spacious.

Ordered the aguachile verde it was 7/10 docked points because it was not spicy at all. My friend ordered the quesabirrias which she said were delicious. The restaurant is very small doesn't seat many people.

I can only judge this place for the 1 thing I ordered, which was their seafood Tower that the cashier said was all there ceviche options available for $45. So I'm judging this off all the ceviches that were in the tower, (frozen/thawed)Ahi tuna , 6 cooked shrimp, (frozen/thawed) pre-cooked octopus, imitation crab, sierra fish ceviche, and shrimp ceviche. The flavors of the seafood mix was super underwhelming and overly flavored with to much marinated lime and to much oregano. Even with their Viejon signature sauce that comes on the side didn't help it much. I also tried their mango/habanero salsa to try and give this tower a kick of flavor, which didn't help. That salsa sucked also! Best thing from my order where the corn chips and the cold modelo. Who puts imitation crab in a mariscos Tower c'mon imitation crab! how is that fresh seafood?. It took like 30min to get the 1 item. Parking is horrible on a Sat at noon time. Definitely will not recommend or revisit. Better options available around San Diego.
Paid $20 for a burrito that was about the size of a rolled taco. When I asked the cook and the server if that was actually the correct order, they both looked at me like I was crazy. Came here with a friend who was excited to try the fish tacos, but the portion and response from staff was really disappointing. Won’t be coming back.
