Handoo BBQ is a popular spot for AYCE Korean BBQ, known for its fast service and good quality meat, especially the brisket, spicy pork bulgogi, and beef tongue. While most find the service attentive, some mention it can be spotty when busy. A few reviews mention issues with cleanliness or specific dishes like the LA Kalbi.

YOU WILL NOT REGRET! Came here with my buddy and we were super hungry. We first shared a corn cheese then we each got a soup. I got the spicy tofu soup and it had the whole ocean in there a big variety ! My buddy got the ox bone suit and loved it bc the brisket slices had so much flavor. Their sides were amazing. We shared the bulgogi over rice both loved it. But our favorite item was the Galbi, which is marinated short rib in a steamed pot get it trust me. Service is good restaurant is clean. Definitely coming back here.
I've been to Jomaru a few times and it never dissapoints! They have some of the most authentic Korean Dishes in San Diego and for a world wide chain restaurant, they maintain their quality at both locations! The walls have descriptions of the meals with images that make you want to try everything. There's seating a lot of seating while also being very spacious inside. We started off with the Corn Cheese, the Fried Pork Dumings, Boo-Cho-Jun (Scalion Pancake) and then ordered the Hae Jang Guk. The Corn Cheese was the best I have ever had and this was my first time having it at this location. Im never impressed with corn cheese but here, it was perfectly melted cheese and amazing seasoning! The Fried Pork Dumplings were nicely fried and the meat and glass noodles along with the seasoning inside were just perfect! Chef's kiss! The Boo-Chu-Jun (Scallion Pancake) was also very flavorful ns nicely dense but not to heavy either. The Hae Jang Guk came out boiling hot which I really love and appreciate about Korean Dishes, and the flavor was perfect! The amount of flavor, spicy and kimchi in it was so well balanced and the meat was so tender and high quality, it was just a perfect soup for these recent cold days! Overall, Jomaru is a go to for me and I'd recommend it to all my friends or visiting friends in town.
The staff was very friendly and efficient. I like that they generously offered us more banchan as well as more broth for our gamjatang. Hot pot on a chilly night? 🙌 Yesssss, please! The Sesame Leaves Seafood Pancake with shrimp, calamari and sesame leaves was delicious as well!
What an experience! So I’ve never had Korean Hot Pot before and a friend recommended this place to me… normally with Korean cuisine I’m used to BBQ or Bulgogi, so I was excited to try a place that offered something different. First off, the service was impeccable and guided us through the meal. It was also nice not to have to wait to be seated (party of 5). This place is rather casual. We order the Spicy Pork Bone Stew which came with numerous bonchons. The broth was fantastic! Spicy, but not so much so. The pork bones were delicious; covered in tender meat with the bones still present; basically the pork version of Hamachi Kama… Anyways, huge fan and will definitely return the next time I’m in SD!!!
The broth had a deep, rich flavor, and the meat was cooked really well super tender and fell right off the bone. We added rice cakes instead of getting fried rice, and they were great. The service was also really good. They refilled the broth quickly, so we were able to enjoy even more. Overall, delicious gamjatang and friendly service. I definitely recommend it.
Appreciate the sweet service by the staff tonight. We are regulars here and the staff today was exceptionally considerate - he’d bring over more napkins (we have a toddler), and check if we wanted more side dishes BEFORE we asked 🥹 In the end, he packed up our leftover gamjatang FOR US! Forgot to ask for his name but thank you, young Asian male server!
Really great food, atmosphere and service... Not too crowded if you arrive early, and definitely worth the wait. Parking is kinda tough though!
This place is amazing. The food was delicious. The server recommendations were perfect, and overall experience was exceptional. This was my first time here and I'll definitely be coming back.
What a wonderful meal tonight at Jomaru! My friend and I love Korean pork bone hotpot. We found this new opened spot from a lot of people’s recommendations. We ordered a medium size pork bone hotpot and a chive pancake. The size is pretty big, we didn’t really finish all. These amount of food can feed 3 girls. But all the food are so amazing. We loved all the things on our table, especially the pork bone hotpot. There are a lot of meats on the bone, they are so soft and flavorful. The meats are falling apart from the bone. I love the amount of fat on the meat to make it so satisfying. I highly recommend this restaurant!
So so so so delicious! We loved being there. We felt welcomed and invited to go in, loved the fact that the menu is not huge with so many options because you can tell that they are great at what they do. We ordered the spicy pork stew (Large) and the seafood pancake (hemul jeon and the Gam ja tang) so good and is not crazy spicy. It was a bit too much food for the 4 of us all girls. Totally recommend and invited to come back! Loved it!
If you’re not used to a hot pot, or never tried, they have comfort Korean dishes available to order. Since there was 3 of us we ordered a medium of the recommended spicy pork bone soup and an order or Bibimbap. Note that Korean food is a spicy for the average taste so expect full flavor. Also with your order Korean dishes tend to serve a complimentary appetizer of “banchan” or Korean vegetable side dishes. The ambiance feels like your at right home in a South Korean restaurant.
Jomaru Gamjatang Korean Hot Pot San Diego, California Chuck and I had dined at a few Hot Pot Restaurants recently. Most of those were Japanese or Chinese Hot Pots. We have never tried a Korean Hot Pot Restaurant before so we decided to try Jomaru which is a franchise from South Korea. The restaurant was decorated nicely and the tables had induction burners for the Hot Pot. The service was excellent and our waitress was very informative and very friendly. She explained in detail the menu items for the Hot Pot and there were several you can choose from. She was very attentive and also very personable. The prices were very reasonable for a Hot Pot Restaurant. $40.00 for a medium Hot Pot for two and $55.00 for a large Hot Pot for three people. Since this was our first time we decided to order their most popular Hot Pot which was Gam Ja Tang which is a Spicy Pork Bone Soup. Before we receive our Banchan which were all delicious. I especially loved the Kimchi and the Korean pepper. Along with the Hot Pot dish you can order several "Add On" items such as Ramen, Udon, Potato Pasta, etc. We decided to get the Seasoned Napa Cabbage, Ramen, and Fried Rice which is served near the end of the meal. All those were a great and delicious accompaniment to the Hot Pot. The Hot Pot was filled with lots of meat, mushrooms, Perilla Leaves, Potato, and some other vegetables. The Broth was delicious and just had enough spice or heat to tickle your throat. The meat was tender. The fried rice came near the end if the meal which was also delicious. You can also order some of thier specialty dishes which is found on the other side of the Menu. You will find Bulgogi, Bibimpap, Pork Cutlet, California, etc. Overall I would definitely return to dine here. The service was fantastic and the food delicious
The experience and food tonight by was so good! We ordered the pork tonkotsu, spicy pork bone broth, and galbi. Everything came out really fast, food was fresh and crispy. We were extremely satisfied! The portions were huge so we probably have leftovers for at least a few more meals. Would 10/10 recommend!
My go to spot! The apps, sides, and meat options are delicious. Customer service can be spotty but there’s so many tables and so many moving parts do they deserve some grace.
This place has been around forever, and now I know why! When we visited our son on Saturday, he brought us here for dinner, and it definitely hit the spot. The prices are very reasonable — the premium dinner option is only $39.99 — and the meat quality was great. We really liked that the meats weren’t overly seasoned or sweet, letting the real flavor come through. The service was efficient, and the staff kept our side dishes replenished without us even having to ask. It’s a classic AYCE Korean BBQ spot that delivers solid value and flavor. The only downside is parking — there’s practically none around, so we ended up in a paid lot a few blocks away. Still, totally worth it for the quality and experience. A great spot for a satisfying Korean BBQ night!
Best KBBQ in San Diego. Both for price and quality. They are very busy during dinner but the servers always so attentive. Parking is required patience. Lunch is the best time for parking and restaurant is way more quiet. It’s been so many years I haven’t had this authentic KBBQ vibes since I moved here.
Decided to try out Handoo! I'm a huge fan!! 3 of us decided on AYCE. After tax and tip (and me ordering a beer), it came out to ~$45-50 per person, which is quite good! We ate a ton of food. My personal favorites were the brisket and beef tongue. Sides were good as well. I'm a huge fan of this location getting "double" orders correct. Whereas, other locations always mess up a double order. Shoutout to Nate (our server), for being extremely attentive and quick. Staff was quick to change grills. Parking is absolutely garbage in this plaza. I ended up parking a few blocks in the back and walking 7-8 min over. Not a big deal. Only downside to this location is that airflow is nonexistent. It will be very smoky inside. Excited to be back in the near future!
The really good experience all around. The food was fantastic and the atmosphere was great. They had really friendly customer service as well. All the meat was amazing. Have a lot of really nice cuts of beef, which was my favorite and also, of course other meats, but all the beef options were amazing. 👌
Originally went to another place that was booked and they suggested to come here. They were kind, attentive, and fairly busy. Service was very fast. It’s a quaint, intimate space. I didn’t know I was ordering all you can eat but I picked option B. The spicy pork was the winner this time as every other meat needed flavor via marinade or a better sauce. Prime rib was tender. .my only dilemma is that the grill is changed often but the oil doesn’t help with the meat sticking way too much to get a good sear. I like that we didn’t need to cook all our vegetables because we had so many prepared sides. Would definitely come again.
Good Korean BBQ. Price point was good. We showed up at 10:45 and felt rushed for their last call at 11:15. We had the $27.99 special. Soft Tofu was amazing! We had the brisket, garlic pork belly, sausage & bulgogi beef…..all were tender and delicious. However, the marinated ribs were a bit tough. Banchan was al good!
I wish they had more side dishes but the quality of meat for the cheaper option of the AYCE menu was really good. Their beef bulgogi and spicy pork was delicious. The fish cake side dish is some Of the best we have had in a while. The kimchi is young and will appease people that don’t like it aged and sour. Skip the salad as it’s made with cabbage, unless you like it like that. The place was half full on a Saturday afternoon which is always a good sign.
Went to find a Korean BBQ off Convoy and ended here. Since it was hubby and son with me, we knew we could pack down some meat with us 3. I love BBQ and for 7/2 weekend, we wanted a quieter atmosphere to start to celebrate the 4th of July weekend. So many Asian places to eat in this area. It's amazing.Since parking is an issue, We parked off a side road one block parallel to Convoy and walked with no problems. There's a parking area for other businesses that allows u to drive all the way to the parallel street (short cut to walk thru) to where we parked. The place was packed but we were the first in the overflow room that had looked like an encased patio with windows. It was really different in that they have little stools around a small round table with a burner in the middle. The eating area is a thinner space (instead of a table, so the food bowl is actually small; no room for a plate. Where we sat there was a TV tray beside us so we put the meat there so we had more space. Overall a great vibe. We were finishing up when so many other people were in line. We got there at a good time. Anyways it's all you can eat here. Pricing was for adults $26.99 for 16 different meal options or $32.99 for their 27 meal options. Of course went for the $32.99 because we wanted Short Ribs (we should have selected Rib Eye too but forgot about it). We also got spicy pork belly, spicy chicken and another thin marbled meat which I don't know what it was called. We had fried rice and white rice served as a scoop in a small cup like bowl. We ordered a green salad, and fresh cut mushrooms. Of course the Korean way is to have a few sides like as if u were at a Mexican place with chips and salsa. So we had little veggies with jalapeño, clear noodles, kimchi, and another small bowl I don't know what it is. I love Kimchi and veggies so we had replenished it as well (unlimited on the sides). You have 3 hours max to eat, which is normal. All I can tell you is that the meat was amazing. The short ribs and chicken were tender and flavorful. The pork belly was very flavorful as well. I ordered mushrooms on the side, dipped it into their soy sauce and BBQd it along with the others. YUMMY!!! 😋 and more YUMMY AND YUMMIER!! 😋 The waiter wasn't all smiles but he was extremely attentive. He changed the burner about 4 times. I've never went to a BBQ place that changed the burner out so frequently. He checked up on how the meat was cooking and heated it up adjusting the flame accordingly. He was quick to take away empty containers etc. I really liked the service. Loved the vibe. We had a great eating experience. Needless to say WE ROLLED OUTTA THERE completely stuffed like a piggy!!🤣😂😆
This place was great as it does close pretty late (12am). The atmosphere and setting was like a scene straight out of a movie lol. The quality of the meats were above average. The side dishes were well seasoned, and the soft tofu soup was superb. This is the first time we have seen rice paper as a side dish, so we used it as a rollup for our meats and it was so tasty! yum yum! The staff were very fast and attentive. Overall we had a great time. A+
Went here on Saturday for lunch. Wasn't too crowded. They only had 2 servers but they were great! Fast brining orders and changing your grill. Service gets 5 star and food gets 4 and that's being harsh because everything was excellent except their LA Kalbi (3 bone). It was way too sweet. If they tone down their sugar it would be excellent. Definitely will be back.
This restaurant is said to be a branch from Korea, and the interior definitely feels authentically Korean. It’s very clean, and the walls are filled with photos of Korean celebrities, so it really seems like a place that’s also popular in Korea. The side dishes were delicious too—especially the potatoes. The seasoning was so good that we asked for extra several times! For the main dish, we ordered their signature pork bone soup. The broth was rich and flavorful, and you can adjust the spice level if you want it spicy. All the ingredients were very fresh. The pork bones were cooked until the meat was super tender, and the portions were huge—more than enough for two people. We couldn’t finish it and ended up taking the rest home. It was very satisfying. The staff helped with cooking and explained the dishes, making the whole dining experience really pleasant. Overall, it’s definitely worth a try! Great flavor, generous portions, and a must-visit spot for anyone who loves pork bone soup.
The taste was pretty good! Just average for Korean food! This spicy pork stone pot rice wasn't particularly amazing! But it was alright.
Hot soup is generlly nice. Such a nice option for those who love Korean style tang menu. However, tonkatsu is not a good choice on the menu of Gamjatang place. It tastes a bit overcooked. They did kindly provide the new one, but it tasted slightly overcooked again. Maybe the oil was the problem. Anyway, I highly recommend this place for Gamjatang.
Gam Ja Tang (Pork Spine Bone & Potato Soup) is their famous and signature dish. It is pretty awesome. You are supposed to do a fried rice (with cheese) on the same pan to finish your meal, and that is indeed the way to go. BUT, I made the mistake of not finishing everything, all the soup (with meat that I spent 5 minutes to pick out), and they actually threw those away to put in the fried rice (I veru much regretted that). Otherwise, its an overall good experience (both food & service)
Solid AYCE Korean BBQ. Marinated beef rib, thin-sliced pork belly and spicy chicken were our favorites, but all of the choices are good. When they are busy, it's difficult to get refills on necessary sides like lettuce leaves, jalapeño and samjang. Overall, very tasty.
Handoo BBQ is the spot to be at. I found it convenient that it's one of my spots-of-interest open till midnight. I found myself here at 9pm on a weekday and it had quite a bit of activity. We dined inside but I could see that they had really fun outside dining on circular tables. I think this is better for larger parties. We were originally sat down to a table with prepared sides; Things such as kimchi, glass noodles, and tofu slices. I requested corned cheese, white rice and tofu. The corned cheese was wonderful, although really hot when delivered. Careful! The meat was pretty good. I started with bougolgi, shrimp, and rib eye steak. Later we got pork belly, marinated ribs, and beef tongue and spicy squid. I cannot remember exactly what it's called but it was a marinated steak. It was amoung my favorite meats where one slice was a serving for two. Honestly, none of these options Were any good except for the bougolgi, pork belly, squid and that marinated steak. They have great flavor and cook very nicely. The rest have little to no flavor. I guess they taste better when dipped with the sides. I wasn't very concerned with it, but my party commented that this place has very few sides compared to elsewhere. Overall, the place was very enjoyable, along with fast service. We were able to place orders with the 3 servers that we saw. They seemed to function on very efficient communication. Their staff would often walk by and change out our grill too! So our grills were always good. 33 dollars and some change gets you the better menu and it's worth it.
I liked it. Meat was good for the price here. Sides included decent too. Nice ayce kbbq place overall. First order of brisket was great. Quality of second order wasn't good. Thin and regular pork belly were both alright. Soondubu stew is meh. Egg is good. Service was fast even though busy. Overall I liked it. Maybe not a nice looking place inside as olleh or prime. But good experience.
This place is pretty good for only $26.99 ! That’s the price of the basic menu. It wasn’t that expensive. There weren’t a lot of sides, or bonchon, the kimchi was kind of too spicy for me but the side salad was so fresh and perfectly seasoned. We stared off with the Beef Brisket, Pork Belly and Beef Bulgogi. The beef brisket was delicious and had great flavor. The pork belly was not cut that thick so it did cook fast and didn’t have much flavor. And the brisket was pretty juicy but just alright. We ordered or beef brisket then the thin sliced pork belly. The thin slice pork belly was so so good and it held flavor so well! We ordered two steamed eggs and they came out long after we ordered them and we’re not good. They were over cooked and did not taste good.. I’m sure it was a mistake and would’ve been better if it was done properly but I’ll try it again next time. In terms of meat this is the one of the best qualities in San Diego.
Despite having high expectations for the flavor, particularly the ox broth soup, the dish was disappointing. The Bulgogi is pretty good 👍
I tried the Korean Gamja-tang and it really upset my stomach.I've been running to the bathroom non-stop. So, this restaurant is off my list for good.
We went because the place had great reviews, but honestly, it was just okay. The food was fine, nothing special, but good enough. The Korean pancake seemed to have shrimp and squid in it, but they were chopped so finely that it was hard to tell. The service wasn’t as good as people said, either. The staff didn’t seem very friendly.
Worst customer ever. I came with my friends (6 people) | was the only person who didnt want to eat because I ate before I went there. I came to sit with my friends. They didn't let me sit at the table without paying full price, even tho I didn't eat. I told them I'll be buying drinks.. nope. Bad policy, bad customer service, 0 stars. I wouldn't spend a dime here on principle
I had the absolute worst experience at this Korean BBQ restaurant. First off, the service was terrible. The staff seemed uninterested and disappeared for long period. The grill was dirty when we arrived, and they didn’t bother to clean it properly. The meat was the biggest disappointment—it tasted old, poorly prepared, and was barely edible. Side dishes were bland and clearly not fresh. The restaurant was also filthy. The floor was sticky, the tables felt greasy, and the restroom was outright disgusting. For the high prices they charge, the quality and experience were shockingly bad. Save your money and go somewhere else—you'll thank yourself.
