Had to get there right when the doors opened to beat the usual long wait to get inside! Food was great. Everything is served family style so expect big portions. The crab rangoons were exceptionally amazing. Also loved the orange chicken and beef fried rice. The ginger lemonade is very ginger-y BUT I do love ginger :-) The beautiful atmosphere of the restaurant made the experience altogether great

Amazing Chinese food in a super cool atmosphere! Food was delicious, and the restaurant had such a good cozy vibe. The best surprise at the end was the price!!! Extremely affordable under $20 per person if you are splitting with a group, even with ordering a ton of food.

Had the pleasure of trying this place for the first time yesterday with some friends. The food was phenomenal! We opted to try a variety of different plates and shared them for the table which worked out nicely. We tried the Orange Chicken (Excellent), General TSO's (also excellent), the Dan Dan Noodles (Spicy but excellent), Beef and Broccoli and the Lo Mein Noodles. All the options were great, I enjoy spicy foods so I would probably do the Dan Dan Noodles when I come back. We also had the egg rolls which were great! The food comes out as it was made so its super hot and worked out well for our table of 6. I would recommend getting there early, I didn't confirm this but I believe they do not take reservations and are just first come first go. We showed up at 4:30 for an early dinner and they had a table for 6 right outside (it was kind of chilly but the heaters were nice). Definitely recommend this place!

The food here is absolutely phenomenal it’s like a Chinese restaurant but taken up 10 notches. The cream cheese wontons for example have a real crab in them and the walnut shrimp and some of the best deal ever have it’s insanely crispy. I really loved the fried rice because it has Chinese sausage inside of it. This place does not take reservations but it’s definitely worth the wait. I really love that they have a family style portions and the food is delivered super quickly despite it being very busy. The chili oil lo mein was my favorite item I loved it, and practically drank the sauce out of the bottom of the bowl. What really surprised me was how much food I got for the cost. A family of four left with a ton of left overs And I only spent 60 bucks

I always get takeout from here because indoor sitting is hard to come by. But yesterday I was finally able to sit down. The food was amazing and tasted fresh. They brought out the food as it was made so it was really warm. The wings were crispy.

Fortunate Son was recommended by locals and we're so glad we went. Even at 5:30 PM on a Sunday there was already at least a 30 minute wait for the first available table. No worries though, just go next door to get a drink at Polite Provisions and have a cocktail while you wait. We came to find out Polite Provisions also mixed the drinks for Fortunate Son. The patio seat was fun but the ambience inside is awesome. The food was amazing and unlike the Chinese takeout places I usually go to. There are some awesome veggie options. We got the General TSO cauliflower and the vegan Ma Po tofu. Both incredibly flavorful and filling. Hit this place up for sure.

What a beautiful spot!! Definitely instagram ready ✨ We came on Thursday night and had to wait only about 15 min , which was fine. The waiter was very nice , polite and helpful. We tried -Beef & shishito peppers - very good, recommend to try -Show fun - also good flavors, but probably won't order again, not as exciting as other items -Chicken wings were another favorite!!!! Loved it!! -sweet & sour pork belly - we were pleasantly surprised with this dish, pork belly wasn't deep fried which was a huge plus, very tasty with mango garnish 👌🏽 try it! -crab wontons were a good appetizer to share. Wanted to try the shrimp and pork ones but they were sold out. Dishes don't come with rice , so have to order in the side but the portion is HUGE, enough to share $3 Next time we wanna try other dishes and the cocktails!

This place was really good. Starting with staff, super friendly. The visuals here are extremely nice. Flowers covering the entire ceiling. Location is a little small. Of note if you want a mix drink ask to sit in the patio. Indoors is only beer and wine. Food was great portion. Food was delicious... You have to get the ice cream Sunday nice way to end your meal.

I recently grabbed dinner here and was happy I did. The food was great and decently priced. The orange chicken and shrimp friend rice were tasty. The venue has an awesome atmosphere with good tunes and offers good family style dining. Great place to go with friends or on a date. Great music and they even have a pickup window. If your in the neighborhood and want Chinese food this is a great place to visit.

The wait is long, we had a reservation and still had to wait a bit. And the restaurant is very small so you have to wait outside. But our length of wait was worth it. The food was absolutely wonderful. The portions are family style so you get plenty of food. We ordered the walnut shrimp, beef and broccoli, and got a fried rice. All of that was great and the following day. The Szechuan hot chicken wings are not spicy at all and they had the perfect crisp to them. The crab rangoons were just okay. There is not much filling in it, it is mostly just the wonton wrapper. I would not recommend getting them because it not worth the money for how little you get, unless you enjoy wonton wrappers. Everything else was really good. The food comes out as it is ready so you don’t get everything at once. It does come out pretty fast though. The restaurant its self is decorated so nicely and the staff was very friendly.

We had a great meal at Fortunate Son. The atmosphere, service, and food all came together for a fun and memorable dining experience. We shared the cucumber salad to start, along with General Tso’s, lo mein, and green beans — all of which were very good. The lively atmosphere added to the experience. Highly recommended.

Such a vibe!! I've been wanting to go here so we arrived right around 5 and got seated right away. Food was great! 10/10 American Chinese it's so good and great quality, definitely elevated from a classic take out operation. My sister is vegan and they were able to make a few items vegan and gave us some options that she could choose! Overall great food, great service, great atmosphere !

Some of the best food. The staff was fantastic, price is affordable for the serving size, vibes are great (atmosphere is unique). Absolutely worth the hype!! Would go there again many many times, stilling thinking about the cucumber salad 🤤

Such a fun night. Once we got our table they sat us near the fire feature and it very cool we had ordered Fried rice, Orange chicken, Egg Rolls & deep fried tofu. Very large portions and a great value. The interior decor was well done.

Booked a reservation for this little spot and it didn’t disappoint. Family sized portions but small tables, and if you don’t like playing jenga. I wouldn’t recommend ordering too much. The staff were more than accommodating and menu was simple to navigate. The taste was pretty good and I recommend the green cabbage and the dandan noodles.

Really fun time at Fortunate Son in North Park! The decor is really cool with the dragons and rainforest vibe. The menu contains typical Chinese fare, we ordered the crab rangoon, honey walnut shrimp, and chicken lo mein. Tables can be tight on the inside. We didn’t have a reservation on a Sunday around 3:45 and waited for an hour for a table. Recommend if you want somewhere cute to go and get drinks!

And honestly a place you must try while you’re in the city #SanDiego #ILoveFortunateChinese. It also had a really nice birthday candle lasted a long time.

I ordered Door Dash delivery. Total Price: $30.97 w/o delivery fee or tip $7.99-egg rolls $6.99-fried rice $15.99-walnut shrimp* I was bummed that the Door Dash menu was limited and didn't offer Egg Foo Young, which is what I was hoping to try. I went with 2 of their top 3 items on the menu. Egg rolls were not on their top list. It doesn't mean much, but I loved the packaging of the food. Everything looked appetizing and put together well. I even loved their luxurious napkins. Again, I know this may not seem important, but it does when you pay that much for your food! All of the food was really good and it definitely wasn't your typical greasy mix Chinese food. Everything tasted fresh and the size of the shrimp in the walnut shrimp were huge! See pics! The portion sizes were nice, too. I'd like to check out this place again and dine in. *Tip: rice does not comes with the $15 entree, so I deducted a star. That's pretty expensive w/o white rice to go with it. :-(

Fortunate Son is an interesting spot and very different from most Chinese restaurants in San Diego. It reminds me of a hole-in-the-wall spot you might find in downtown Oakland. I really enjoyed the orange chicken and the chow fun. The chow fun had a dark and heavy sauce that was very flavorful. I think there should’ve been more bok choy in the dish though. The egg rolls were decent but I was hoping for a crispy shell. Overall I enjoyed it and would recommend trying it out.

The Manager made my Experience Top Notch. The only thing I Needed to mention was that the Szchecuan (sp?) chicken were Perfectly Cooked…… Crispy, not creasy, the meat was a Good texture to Bite into…. Just that it didn’t have Flavor! But, I Appreciate the Kind Gestures and Extra Free Chicken.

I came here with my boyfriend for an anniversary and was pretty happy with how the night went. The service was great, super attentive and friendly, our food came out reasonably fast and I'm not mad at the quality. My only complaint was the broccoli beef was on the saltier side, same with the fried rice, but I really enjoyed the lo mein. The atmosphere was great, only downside is that there is limited seating & the arrangements are close and a bit uncomfortable. Aside from that, the music was very loud, but overall I enjoyed our visit here & would come back to try the rest of the menu!

A cute little Chinese spot on Adams Ave in the North Park Neighborhood. The decor inside is amazing. It takes you straight to a mix of a street corner in hung Kong and the set of big trouble in little China. The wait staff was very fast and super friendly. The food was solid but just needed a little extra punch. It’s certainly elevated Chinese-American classics but it’s right in the edge of being a bit more. We got the cabbage, Dan Dan noodles, crispy tofu, and egg rolls. The crispy tofu was the stand out. So flavorful and crisp. Overall I’ll definitely visit again whenever I crave Chinese.

This place is a delicious chinese restaurant Normal heights. I recommend you stand in mind for 15 minutes prior to 5 PM. Because it gets busy and you will have to wait since its first comfort serve. Open Table reservations is only available Tues and Weds. All else would be walk ins. We got there at 4:30pm on a Saturday (they open at 3pm) and inside table would be an hour wait so we took the outside table. Sitting outside on the patio was not as cold as I thought. Two heaters per table. To me, Fortunately Son is like an upscale Panda Express without outrageous prices. We got: -Dan Dan noodles: a bit spicy. Very good. Make sure you mix it up. -Beef fried rice: We chose beef and it was too tough and chewy. But the rice has so much flavor. -Orange chicken: Very crispy, it’s not quite like Panda but so much better than other places. -Honey walnut shrimp: So yummy -Hot chicken wings: least favorite, the tongue numbing is real I really enjoyed the food, service and atmosphere. Food came out super fast and tasty. 80s and 90s hip hop was playing. They only serve beer and wine. Polite provisions is next door for drinks. The decor is very Asian and beautiful. Parking in this area sucks. All street parking.

The interior of this place is beautiful. The entire ceiling is covered with flowers and decorations. We sat outside because it was 18 of us. It’s cool that when you order a lot they just bring food out as it’s cooked. The jasmine tea was really good. The food is MEH! I liked the crab Rangoon a lot and the beef and pork dumplings were really good, the beef lo mein was also really good. That cauliflower was amazing. The salt and pepper shrimp was really good! I didn’t like the orange chicken, the General Tao’s chicken, the fried rice, the white rice, the egg rolls - yuck. Would I go back - yes and try some different things on the menu. It’s really inexpensive and a fun place. Also it was packed! Sorry I didn’t take any food pics.

Good Chinese food in Normal Heights. Inside and al fresco dining. They do not take reservations, and we waited over an hour for a party of 5. Decor and atmosphere are great. Food is served family style, served to the table as it is cooked. Decent hot and sour soup, but way too much parsley, felt like eating hot and sour salad. Orange chicken and general tsao had good flavor but the chicken was too heavily breaded. Walnut shrimp was great, though a little mayo forward for me. Broccoli beef was very good, the meat tasted a bit like bitlong jerky flavor, which I enjoyed. Crab rangoons were top notch. Note that even white rice is a la carte and must be ordered separately. Everything tasted fresh and high quality. Loved the decor. You can see into the stainless steel kitchen to watch the masters at work. Service was competent but slow. Water glasses were often empty. Clearing completed dishes was lagging, and dishes were piling up. ADA friendly. Zero parking, only street parking. Place was clean and tidy.

Went here with a friend, we’ve been meaning to try it. They will ask you if it’s your first time so they can explain the menu to you. Everything comes in big portions so it’s meant to share, so it’s just orange chicken with no side or just fried rice with no side. We got the orange chicken, the fried rice and the danny noodles. I was not a fan of the danny noodles but my friend loved it. The fried rice was good, nice texture and a good color. The orange chicken was the star of the show for me. Aside from the orange chicken, the food didn’t blow me out of this world or anything. This is a good spot if you’re in the area, but if you’re not around North Park, this is a place where you try once and probably never really go out of your way to go again. Service was amazing, waited was super nice and helpful. It’s definitely a little pricey but if you portion it correctly it’s worth the money. Atmosphere was perfect, had this cool red lighting. Great at night.

Half of the food items are good on the menu. The shrimp, the dan dan noodles and the green beans are top notch. The other items are ok, the tofu was over bearing with too much flavor of turmeric, as a person whom grew up with tofu the majority of their life in different dishes, I was not pleased with this one. Nothing special about the friend rice. I tried the kung pao chicken months before returning again and the taste has changed, I liked it before not sure what happened. The dishes are on the pricier side. I would go back for the shrimp and dan dan noodles since they are addicting.

Walked in on a Saturday night at 7pm and the wait for 2 people was about 3 hours so if you really want a table on the weekend, make a reservation. The nice thing was we were able to order food from their menu next door at polite provisions. We ordered the broccoli beef and the chicken fried rice. I really enjoyed both of these dishes. I know there are mixed reviews but personally I felt the food was great and the prices and portions are also really good.

I ordered the General Tso's Chicken, Beef and Broccoli, Chicken Lo Mein, and Rrab Rangoons. Overall very satisfied with the portion to price ratio. Big portions full of flavors. The Tso's was my favorite. The only negative I have is the Rangoons could have had a little more filling. Total I spent ~$67. Definitely going to be in my rotation. Parking was a little challenging, it's in North Park (nuff said). It is street parking only. We didn't dine in, we took it to-go. They do have a door on the right for takeout orders, and several options on maps for online ordering. The inside had a really nice ambience with lanterns and such. The wait staff was very friendly. Go check them out!

My husband and I had this restaurant on our must-visit list for quite some time, and we were happy to finally try it—it did not disappoint. I highly recommend making reservations at least a few days in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly and walk-in wait times can be long. The food was very fresh and flavorful, though it didn’t feel entirely authentic to traditional Chinese cuisine. We especially enjoyed the Szechuan green beans and the Szechuan hot chicken wings, which were perfectly crispy. The table service was professional and welcoming, and the ambiance was romantic and intimate. Overall, this is a great spot for a nice date night.

The food was good however the server brought our food out one course at a time for my party of five and I didn’t like that because we wanted to eat everything all at once. And by the time we got to the third and fourth dish, they were like warm. But other than that, I like the atmosphere it’s so pretty. Very aesthetically pleasing, and the food was really good. Just don’t like the order in which the food came out.

So, the honey walnut shrimp was goood. But, 2x already the Sczechuan chicken wings didn’t have any Flavor. But, they were cooked pretty well. Also, I know it’s probably pretty busy. But, the receptionist hangs up too quickly after speaking w me. And, just had to address that. Other than that. The cream cheese wontons were good and had a spicy kick. I hope the consistency continues to improve coz the szchech chicken wings is one of the best m.

Loved the ambience of this place. Definitely does get packed during dinner time. However, I thought the food was okay. I did enjoy the cucumber salad. There wasn't nothing special about the food. Would recommend to try this place due to the ambience, but other than that I think you can find better Chinese food elsewhere.

- An unfortunate Experience at Fortunate Son I want to note that I typically avoid writing negative reviews, as I believe that every business has its strengths and weaknesses. However, my experience at Fortunate Son was disappointing enough that I felt compelled to share my honest feedback. I recently visited Fortunate Son Chinese Restaurant with high hopes, but unfortunately, my experience was a letdown. While the ambiance was pleasant and our server was friendly and attentive, the food fell short of expectations. The Kung Pao chicken was a major disappointment, tasting suspiciously like frozen chicken. The fried rice was also a miss, with a mushy texture that lacked flavor. On the other hand, the ginger lemonade was a refreshing highlight. The biggest drawback was the lengthy wait time, which didn't justify the subpar food quality. For a similar price point, I'd prefer to visit Panda Express, which consistently delivers flavorful and satisfying meals. Overall, while Fortunate Son shows promise with its welcoming atmosphere and friendly service, the kitchen could step up its game to compete with other Chinese restaurants in the area.

Super cool atmosphere but mediocre food. The beef from the beef and broccoli was tender but over all the food felt a bit sloppy and overly salty, sweet and saucey. Guess I expected a bit more refinement from a place that looks this cool. Although I’ll say the price matches the taste. It’s quite affordable for the portions.

Fortunate Son is a very cool-looking place to eat, but the rest of the experience leaves something to be desired, considering we made our reservation a month in advance for Christmas Day and waited over an hour for our food. We were told after getting our table that there would be a long wait, and our servers were definitely nice, but after sitting down for that long my table was a little uncomfortable. When the food did arrive it was a bit bland/one-note, and the steamed rice we ordered was undercooked. While we are vegetarian, I’ve been to places with similar menus in the past and had much better experiences. Overall, it had a good atmosphere but I probably wouldn’t go there again due to the wait time and food quality. I also wouldn’t recommend it to any vegans or vegetarians due to minimal amount of good options.

Cute spot for sure I love the ambiance of this place. A lot smaller than I expected. Our host was nice and did inform us that our food will not come out all at once (it took 2hrs with reservations for all 3 items we ordered to come out ) The food was very mid I was disappointed with every item we got. Crab ragoons had barely any filling there was no crab meat seriously. The Dan Dan noodles was odd the noddles are like spaghetti and there was just a lot of fried onion pieces mixed with ground beef and did not have that sesame taste at all. TSO chicken again no meat idk it was just fried crunchy breading with whatever sauce that was . Definitely not authentic Chinese food. For the price you pay for these items with barely any meat ?! Is alarming! I wouldn’t recommend to be honest I rather eat at Panda Express that says a lot sadly ….

Dude, i’m so sad this place is only looks, I’ve been wanting to come here and was disappointed with the food… But it’s such a vibe! Worth to come once and just get the hot and sour soup (only decent thing we ordered) and check the decor, but if you’re into a good meal don’t come here, I honestly have had better food at panda express… but the vibe!! Inside was beautiful and the servers were very kind. The general tso’s chicken and Dan Dan noodles tasted good, but the issue was after we ate. Both our stomachs were fighting for their lives, we got food poisoning. Terrible experience with how bad my stomach feels right now.

Food is okay. If Panda Express is dollar tree, this is Walmart. Ordered an app, a noodle and a protein and came to $50. The noodles came first and the chicken came much later. By the time our noodles were already cold and we ate half of them. Feel like for the price, you can get much more quantity with cheap Chinese food and get almost the same quality of food. Nothing special.

Food is not good, they use way too much soy sauce as seasoning. The ambiance is nice but if you want good Chinese food go to Tasty Noodle House. Best we ordered: Honey Walnut Shrimp Worst we ordered: Lo Mein Noodles This review is done by a Certified Asian ™️.

I’ve ordered pick up several times from here over the last year or so. The food has been super oily and their veggies and fried rice have been bland. The taste for the entrees is pretty good but the after taste reminds me of canola oil. 2.5 star quality but 4 star prices…

My sister and I were excited to finally try this Chinese spot after seeing it all over social media. We knew there might be a wait and were totally prepared for that — but nothing could’ve prepared us for how rude the staff was. First of all, there’s no clear host stand. If there was one outside, no one was anywhere near it. We walked inside (because where else were we supposed to go?) and were immediately snapped at to “wait outside.” Okay… fine. We step back out, stand near what looked like a host stand, and finally the host shows up — only to ask, in the most dismissive tone possible, “Are you waiting for a table?” We said yes, and without even making eye contact, he mumbled, “Yeah… two and a half hours.” Look, if you’re going to make people wait that long, at least pretend you want them there. For a place with so much hype, you’d think the friendliness or basic hospitality would match. Instead, we felt like we were inconveniencing them by simply showing up. We ended up going to the ramen place next door instead — WAY friendlier, WAY better service, and honestly probably a better experience overall. Save yourself the attitude and go literally anywhere else.

So far the biggest miss of my year in San Diego. Where to even begin. There was no hostess, and a longer and longer line formed as people with reservations waited 10+ minutes for someone to notice them. Servers walked by and chose to ignore everyone. Unfortunately that was just the start. Service was highly lacking across the board. Our server came to our table two times: Once when we put our order in and once to check in. She and every other server spent almost the entire night working on takeout orders. Food wait was incredibly inconsistent as some tables got everything where others had a random influx of different dishes. Many servers bought the wrong food to the wrong tables multiple times over the hour we were there. When the food did come, it was pretty mediocre. Not worth the price or the wait in any capacity. I was incredibly frustrated since the Kung Pow Chicken was mostly onions and green bell peppers. The picture below is just of the excessive amount of vegetables after the minuscule amount of chicken was sorted out. I realize now I should have sent it back to the kitchen and asked them to actually add some chicken. I made reservations 3 weeks in advance to try this place and was left extremely disappointed. CH Project restaurants have been some of the best spots I’ve been to across the country, but Fortunate Son was a huge let down. Will not be going back and will actively be telling others to find somewhere better. When the entire server staff prioritizes takeout orders, they see in person dining as a burden and it’s shows. One star…

Picked up my orange chicken five minutes after it was ready and the chicken is absolute disgusting. It is as if it was sitting on the counter for at least three hours and just quickly reheated and left to sit out again. Not to mention there was no sauce on the orange chicken and there were weird random dark pieces of meat as shown in the photo and lastly the chicken was overly crisp where it just felt like I was eating a chip. It’s no wonder why the rating on this restaurant keeps going down ever since I moved to San Diego. This place sucks and I thought I would give them another try but they continuously fail. They put so much vegetables and none of the meat that you pay for in their dishes and overpriced everything And to top it off I wanted to at least enjoy a fortune cookie something that usually I thought wouldn’t be ruined, but this fortune cookie was stale and inedible. I didn’t even want to read my fortune. Don’t go here. This place cannot be saved and its quality is just diving deeper and deeper down. The only good thing I rated was the atmosphere because the aesthetics are nice. That is literally it. I said what I said #StillHungry

I really don’t like leaving bad reviews, but I’m genuinely upset—I just threw away my entire dinner. I ordered takeaway on Monday July 21 and got the crab rangoon, General Tso’s chicken, and fried rice. The crab rangoon was burnt and barely had any filling. The chicken was also burnt and mostly just thick batter—I found maybe two actual pieces of chicken in the whole container. Disappointed, I figured I’d at least eat the fried rice… until I noticed a pool of oil sitting at the bottom. It was really disappointing to throw away $40 worth of food that clearly wasn’t edible. Does this place have ambiance? Sure. But that doesn’t matter if the food is this bad. I expect better from a CH project restaurant. I've had good meals from Fortunate Son but the quality has significantly decreased. I've ordered here a lot and have noticed it going downhill. This experience was so bad though that I won't be returning. Please hire better cooks and improve the food quality. Honestly, I’d rather eat at a humble hole-in-the-wall spot with good food than overpay for something that ends up in the trash. Save your money and skip this place.
