Opinions de GIHON Ethiopian Kitchen San Diego
First day open in their new location today. Best Ethiopian food in San Diego. I've eaten at every other place in San Diego and it's not even close. Sambusa wrapping is fluffy and they are fried perfectly. Vegan options are excellent, including beets, eggplant, green beans, and more. I am excited to try the mushroom tibs next time. I hope the quality of this restaurant continues to be fantastic.
I regularly visited Gihon's original location closer to downtown, probably went there for close 20 years. When that location closed temporarily, I'd check ever so often for updates. That's how I found their new location on Miramar. Food is delicious, and the family that owns it is truly lovely. The vegan sampler platter is amazing, a range of flavorful dishes you scoop up with injera flatbread. I'm not vegan and that's what I always get. The spiced tea is also quite nice. One of my fav places for many years. Highly recommend.
Delicious food! Definitely the best Ethiopian food I've tried! I went for the vegan platter and each bit was so good! I'd heard so much about Ethiopian food and tried it somewhere else and it wasn't very good so I was a bit skeptical about trying it again and I'm so glad I did! The owners were lovely as well and we spoke about Ethiopia and how it is developing really well! Definitely recommend!
My friend and I ordered the meat platter + misir + gomen and a side of shiro. Everything was so delicious and authentic. The misir and gomen were so aromatic. The filet mignon was especially tender. Everyone in San Diego needs to try GIHON!!!
Simple decoration but where this place shines is the FOOD. I was thoroughly impressed with the vegan platter (flavor, diversity, and portion) and even got extra injira on the house.
Gihon Ethiopian Kitchen is the best Ethiopian food I have had in San Diego county! I have tried all the places in North Park and Gihon is THE BEST. I got the vegan platter with my husband and we devoured it. There are unique dishes with beets, eggplant and a special tofu sauce which was incredible. I highly, highly recommend this place. It was a nice ambiance because it’s tucked away from road noise and quiet. A great place for an evening dinner.
This place is so good and so convenient for people that live in Mira Mesa area do not have to go all the way to Northpark for Ethiopian . Generous portions and fresh for a good price. Love their Vegan sampler and excited to try more items next time
Love the vegan platter at Gihon, especially the eggplant wot part!!! They have the most variety of items in the sampler compared to all other Ethiopian restaurants in San Diego. No other Ethiopian place in SD offers the delicious eggplant wot dish. Will be back plenty more times :)! They have outdoor seating if you want to eat there as a picnic, even if it says take out only.
Delicious food! It’s in an unconventional location but it’s still nice place to grab dinner after work. A lot of vegetarian options! We had the veggie platter and lentil sambusa (delicious!) and shared it between two people, definitely full afterwards.

I used to live in Ethiopia and Gihon Ethiopian Kitchen is like traveling back to Addis Ababa!! The chicken tibs, eggplant wot, and injera was spot on!! Very authentic and the owner very sweet!! Will definitely be back for more!
Incredibly good food with delicious, fresh injera, great meat and veggie options, and very kind and attentive staff with great recommendations. We will be back soon!
This place was fantastic, the food was delicious. Probably the best Ethiopian food I've ever had. I got the beef ribs and vegan platter and if was really good. I'll definitely be back!
This is the best Ethiopian food I’ve ever had. The owner is so sweet and accommodating. I felt like I was eating at her house or something. The food tasted like it was made with love. 10/10
Ordered the vegan platter (as a single customer) I am in absolute awe that there wasn't a line of customers outside the door in anticipation. The food is just that good. The vegan options were incredible, everything was actually seasoned well unlike other restaurants that provide a plate of plants with nothing on it. I recommend it even if you are not vegan/vegetarian. I'm sad I cannot go here regularly since I do not live anywhere nearby. This is a good introduction to Ethiopian cuisine.
One of the best Ethiopian places I've been to in San Diego. The owner is just so sweet and took the time to make sure I had a great experience. I asked if I could have a side portion of lentils and she gave them to me for free of charge ! I ordered the doro wat which was more traditional than other places in San Diego (mixed bone in pieces of chicken). I will forsure be coming back next time I'm in the area and cannot recommend this place enough.
After reading a few reviews, I decided to order the very popular vegan platter and it did not disappoint! Excellent food and more than enough for two people. I also got the lentil sambusa and it too tasted amazing. Very healthy and very delicious meal served with the traditional anjeer bread made from teff. Quiet location with a few patio tables - a great experience. I’ll be back!
I was thrilled to discover this place! We ordered the vegan platter and beef tibs, which came on a single large platter with injera. It was incredibly delicious! The lady running it is so gracious and lovely too. We will definitely be back!
Absolutely spectacular! The food is finger licking delicious. Had the chicken tibs and veg platter. Just wow! We wiped the plate clean. The owner is so sweet. She is so warm, friendly and was always checking on us. You have to try them. Can't wait to try the other items on the menu.
Excellent Ethiopian food! Delicious flavors. I got the vegan platter and my husband got tibs. We both really liked our dishes . The lady who served us (not sure if she is the owner) was so kind. Very unsuspecting and unpretentious place - they only have 3 tables and they are outdoors.
The food was good, I think the veggie dishes are actually better than the meat. Their injera is puffy, although would have been nicer warmer. The injera on the big platter was a bit dry. Very friendly staff.
Wow, this place is terrific and they have recently moved to a building that has plenty of indoor seating. Vegetarian platter and Tibbs dishes were all top-notch. Owner is very kind and prices and portions are very reasonable. try the spicy tea you will not be disappointed.
Best Ethiopian food I’ve had in San Diego. Very friendly service and owner. Had the vegan platter which was amazing! Generous portions with lots of options to choose from as a vegan. We’ll be bringing friends and family to experience the great food.

It's an unconventional "ghost kitchen" set-up with some outdoor seating, but blankets are available. Had the lamb, it was absolutely delicious, portion size seems fair, Tikil Gomen was a great side dish- like a meatless Golabki. Place is just a jem. I don't know who left the 2 star, but there is a non-zero chance that that reviewer kicks puppies and should be disregarded.
Got the vegan platter and vegan baklava to go. I've eaten at many Ethiopian restaurants across the world, including in Addis Ababa, but the variety of food and flavors we were served at Gihon surpassed them all. My family is vegetarian, so I can't speak to the meat dishes. Will be back for more. :)

They have the tastiest vegan Ethiopian food in San Diego imo. Definitely try their veggie platter! It is primarily a to-go place with just a couple of tables outside.
PSA- location at 7122 Miramar Road is closed. I ordered online through the link on their Google profile (“Online Ordering Through DoorDash”), I paid for the order, and was sent an email that the food would be ready in 25 minutes. I drove to the pickup address listed in the email order confirmation, the same one that’s currently listed on their Google profile, 7122 Miramar Road. When I got there I couldn’t find the take out kitchen, so I called them. Turns out that location is closed and they are moving locations but won’t be open for another week. I was super excited to try their food for the first time but was left hungry and disappointed. I don’t usually post reviews but don’t want someone else ordering food here online and then showing up to a non-existent location like I did. I hope they refund me the amount I paid for my online order and I’m looking forward to trying them another time! I love Ethiopian food. I will update my review/rating once I get to try their food.
