Hanaya Sushi

A very delicious spot for sushi. I ordered takeout: sashimi combo, salmon rolls, and nigiri. The fish was fresh and the rolls were meticulously done by the owner himself. Price to quantity/quality ratio is so much more reasonable compared to other sushi places. The owner is also very kind and welcoming — his hospitality reminded me a lot of the hospitality we’d have in Japan. I highly recommend this place and will definitely be returning.

I ordered two trays of sushi for a work event. The owner helped me estimate how much to order. The presentation was lovely. More importantly, the sushi was delicious! The group devoured the sushi and thoroughly enjoyed it. Hanaya Sushi is A1!

We arrive at 5 and the dine-in was closed but the sir was really kind and he let my boyfriend and I stay and have a really good dinner there, the place is amazing and the food was really good and the rolls have a really good size, he even bring us entrees and he give us some fruits and candy’s at the end. I’ll return back and I recommend this place.

First time visiting this place and I'm not disappointed... I'm disappointed that I did not find it sooner. The owner is so kind and makes you feel welcomed. Currently take out is the only option but hope to visit this place when it opens for indoor dine in because the vibe feels really good. The food was very delicious and fresh. Ordered the spicy tuna roll and yellowtail sushi and it was made with great care and flavor. I will definitely return when I crave sushi to this location!

Huge sushi rolls. Langostine was interesting and very tasty. The restaurant is a fascinating one man operation. If the restaurant is too full he'll let you know that your food will be a long while if you plan to order. Luckily I grabbed a table when he wasn't too busy and everything felt relaxed. He also gave a bag of Japanese candy after the meal. Good experience.

This is the best sushi place I’ve been in years! Visiting Dell Mar e we drove 15 just to come eat here, all the reviews were so preserved o couldn’t miss it and they were no wrong. The owner is indeed super sweet and caring! It’s take out only as of right now and he was so kind he have is cooled water bottles for us to wait in the car -at no charge! He made the best - hands down- the most amazing sashimi salad... tons of fish -all kinds - and delicious dressing! It’s was epic! The rolls were ordered were also super delish... tempura shrimp, spicy shrimp, the best Philadelphia and amazing California roll, plus seaweed salad, miso soup, edamame, candy and mini Water! So good I’m sad i don’t live closer! I wish him endless health and prosperity for his business! I hope i come back to feast again! My mouth waters while writing this review this is how amazing it was!

This place was really good. I got a to-go order and was really surprised at how many extra sides I got along with my two rolls. I didn't think I ordered that much but was absolutely full when I ate everything. The Philadelphia roll had a generous amount of cream cheese. I'm definitely going back for more.

this sushi place is hidden gem! the owner is a old man who is so welcoming and always smiling. He makes everyone feel at ease. I ordered chirashi bowl, and let me tell you that was one of the best I ever had! so fresh and so much in quantity! also the kind man gave chocolates, apple, water with it.. Will definitely visit again! ( the door might seem closed, they have a shade or something, but they are open! )

I stopped in for a quiet dinner and had the best time. The restaurant is small and intimate. The chirashi that I ordered was one of the best meals I’ve had — super fair pricing for high quality sushi. The owner and chef, Hee, is welcoming, funny, and extremely generous about sharing his knowledge. I’ll be coming back.

Hands down, this is a hidden gem! The quality of the sushi was top-notch, presentation was excellent, and the portions very generous. It appears to be a one-man operation, so I would presume that things might take a bit of time when it's very busy there. We were the first people in at 5:00 p.m. for dinner. Check out the reviews, everyone is very happy with their experience and food. I now know why after paying them a visit. I will definitely go back every time I'm in San Diego.

The restaurant looked closed, but I’m glad we went in anyway. The owner was such a kind man and dinner was great! The portions were huge and the extras like the edamame, crab salad, seaweed salad were so thoughtful. We got the shrimp tempura roll (favorite) and spicy scallop roll (the best I’ve had in YEARS) as well as spicy tuna and California. All were huge and delicious! We planned on ordering six rolls, but the owner said four would fill us up (party of 3) and he was right! We are stuffed! He gave us some candy to end the meal and sent my daughter home with fresh flowers. Will definitely come again next time we are in the area!

Just had a to go order from this place and the owner is amazing. You can tell by the initial conversation that this person cares about the food he makes and the people who come in. The food was some of the freshest sushi we’ve ever had. He gave us some extra drinks and candy’s which were not expected and the portions were generous to say the least. My gf introduced me to this place because she goes here for her lunch and it was definitely worth the drive. Would definitely go out of my way to come eat here again.

Excellent veggie rolls and friendly service while you charged your Tesla. 😋😄 The Sushi chef has very unique and creative presentation to everything he serves. The food is delicious with very nice portions for an unbeatable price. Highly recommended.

One of my favorite places in SD! The Chirashi is of such a high value (with more than 20 sashimi and all are very fresh). Very tasty. You can feel that the chef wants to feed every customer with love: the to-go box is filled with Japanese snacks and beverages, reminds me of how my mom prepared bento box for me. Thank you for such a heartwarming memory!

That often comes with high-end restaurants with renowned chefs. When it happens in a tiny, unassuming neighborhood establishment, it makes me giddy. I just had one of the best meals of my life hosted by Hiro the chef and only employee at Hanaya Sushi. In fact it was just he and I in the restaurant on a Wednesday early evening. He served me a beautiful presentation, delicious beyond any words that I possess. It was truly edible art. Hiro was amazingly talented in his food preparation, a real culinary artisan. On top of that, he was funny, kind, humble, grateful and entertaining. When it was all done, he sent me home with an awesome little goodie bag. What's clearly evident to me, that while my treatment seemed so special and personable, I know he takes care of everyone with the same effort and respect. He doesn't really want a crowd, even though he deserves one. He is happy taking care of one customer at a time and giving them all he has, grateful for the living it provides for himself. We need more Hiros in this world. I've eaten at a lot of good places and have been happy to provide reviews for the ones that really stand out. But I've never written a dining review quite like this. I'm so grateful for this very personal experience and I'm actually sad I don't live in the area so that I can enjoy Hiro and Hanaya Sushi on a regular basis. This will be a dinner I'll never forget and I hope to make it back one day. Thank you Hiro!

Amazing restaurant! Stopped in for lunch and was pleasantly surprised by how kind the owner was. Very intimate restaurant with great, fast service! The owner and chef was very attentive to our needs, and the sushi and appetizers were delicious. We even got a goodie bag of candies on our way out. I will definitely be back and would recommend this place to anyone.
