Located in North Park, MAKE cafe offers a large and airy space with great food from various cuisines and the business supports women refugees and immigrants. We went here for brunch for the first time and we left stuffed and feeling good! Parking: Just like any other North Park establishment, expect to take time looking for street parking. Service/Ambiance: The place is huge and could accommodate larger groups. It has a rustic feel with high ceilings. You order at the cashier and they serve the food to your table. Our food came out very quickly. Food: Unfortunately we didn’t have enough time to order a lot but many items on the menu looked inviting. We ended up order the MAKE Breakfast sandwich ($13) and added beef kofta sausage patty ($5). The flavor of patty was amazing and I really appreciated that the milk bread didn’t crumble/get soggy— big must for me. It was a well-made sandwich which I’d get again. Overall: I’d definitely come back to MAKE cafe to try out many other things on their menu!
Incredible food, amazing staff, and an important mission. A delicious restaurant that is also a nonprofit supporting communities in need. The Afghan chicken tacos were insanely delicious. We were with a big group and ordered a variety of items off the menu. All of them were top quality and fresh. Lots of open space and very family friendly. Highly recommend. Will be coming back frequently
Absolutely delicious! I wasn't expecting the food to be this good - I came to support their mission & values - but the food & drinks had such yummy and unique flavors. Only complaint is we wish we ordered more!!! Not the cheapest place ever for breakfast but very comparable prices to every other place in North Park with the added benefit of your purchase supporting their mission of job creation & sustainable community-led agriculture! Will definitely be back next weekend!
This place never disappoints. The food is fresh, flavorful, and perfect portions. The chicken n blue corn waffles and Afghan Tacos were delicious! Mimosas with lemongrass and OJ is a great upgrade from the standard. Friendly and attentive staff. Highly recommend.
The food and service were wonderful, and the vibe/decor is just darling! I thought the prices were very fair, considering we each got an app, entree and coffee. We came for breakfast and their citrus-yogurt with seasonal fruit and granola was a perfect, lighter appetizer for two. Usually I am the person asking “who goes out for a yogurt bowl?” but this bowl was unique with all of the different flavors and just the right amount of different textures (creamy yogurt, crunchy granola, fruit). The sambusas were also heavenly! They are a must-get item and also work well as an appetizer. I also liked that they had many small plate options for sharing - a little taste of everything! For two people, I think 2 apps and 1 entree or 1 app and two entrees would be plenty.
Very sweet employees and great atmosphere! The afghan chicken tacos were packed with flavor and the texture of the tortilla was perfect. Sambusas were crispy and had a great sauce with them. The drinks were also fantastic. Super cool spot for lunch!
This is an amazing restaurant. The mission and ethos behind this business is righteous. The flavors stand up on their own, however. I love trying new things and I’d never heard of a Shakshuka before. It was supremely tasty. The service is great. The prices are fair. The venue is cool. I can’t wait to go back.
The beet spread and shakshuka was delicious. Love the mission and the food/drinks were very good. Very spacious also.
LOVED this spot - it’s a hidden gem in SD. The food was absolutely delicious, and the people were nice. They serve veggies fresh from the garden and were happy to give us a tour. They even let us taste the vegetables in their garden that we had not tried.
Delicious brunch! We enjoyed the Somali Malawian which was absolutely delightful—cheesy, hearty, and spiced. We also had the duck and sweet potato hash that was topped with a super fresh salad. If you enjoy a savory dense bread, the Afghan sweet bread was a great end to our meal, as the citrus butter was to die for. Will definitely be going back!
Fabulous spot for brunch - great food and an even better mission. This restaurant provides job training and skills for immigrant and refugee women as well as youth of all genders. The service is great and the menu is super unique. Try the halloumi, you won't be disappointed!
This is the best new restaurant in North Park. Food is cooked perfectly, tender meat, fluffy potatoes, and delicate cakes for dessert. There was a Persian seasoning on the seared tuna that was amazing! And I’ll be coming back for it. The garden is nice and cool when the suns out, and you can walk around the garden or look at homemade goods for sale after you eat or while you wait.
Wonderful family-style meal to go! Menu changes weekly. Also, sit down brunch available on the weekends. Looking forward to trying again.
I got the North African Shakshuka and loved it. There are plenty of vegetarian options and lots of dishes to explore. I’m looking forward to when they bring in their specials menu
Delicious fresh food, wonderful variety accommodating all dietary needs without sacrificing flavor. Reasonable prices. Excellent service. A good cause too (Immigrant job training)!
Our family loves going to MAKE Projects on Saturday mornings for breakfast. Our daughter explores the garden while we’re waiting for food. The environment is pleasant, the flavors are unique, and the staff is welcoming.
Absolutely love everything about this place! Its mission, its service and its food are all excellent. Started going to MAKE during the pandemic when they would put together to-go meals and been hooked ever since. All of the staff are friendly and so helpful! I love the variety of food options, especially all the different cultural culinary influences the dishes have. Highly recommend to all!
A must try. This place has a mellow vibe, insanely delicious food, friendly staff, spacious seating, and it's all for a good cause. My group tried the sunshine bowl, sambusas, Somali Malawah, and the MAKE breakfast sandwich. Each item was 10/10! Will definitely return and recommend this place to friends!
I can't believe this place isn't more popular. The food is so fresh and so delicious. We got the three course duck meal and each course was nothing short of amazing. The place has such a cool vibe. The people who served us were attentive, helpful, and so friendly. The manager came up and gave us some background about their organization and their mission, it made us feel even better about spending our money there. I highly highly recommend, and I can't wait to go back
By far my new favorite spot to grab brunch in North Park! The mission is incredible, and it feels so good to support this organization. Honestly, though, the food is amazing and worth a visit alone. Loved the Vietnamese Iced Coffee, the Fresh Toast, and the Somalian Malawah (w/ hot sauce…*chef’s kiss*) We will be back for sure!
This is the best pho I've had. And my BF says it's the best he's ever had which says a lot because his family used to drive all the way to LA cuz there were no good ones in San Diego when he was a kid. It's something in the broth that's amazing! They give you the bowl of noodles and then pour in the broth from a pitcher. I got a rare beef and brisket last time and it was so good. This time I got the wagyu and it was quite smokey and crazy good! My bf got the special that had oxtail in it, which he really liked. I tried the "old pho-shioned" It was really good, I love the spices in it. The staff is really attentive and kind and the atmosphere is great (also played his music). The location right outside the North Park sign is also fun to people watch from. Definitely recommend and will keep coming back!
If you’re looking for truly authentic Vietnamese food in San Diego, Shank & Bone is it. As a Vietnamese American, San Diego born and raised, I don’t say this lightly. The spare rib pho is a must. The Cá Thố and Canh Chua honestly taste better than my mom’s cooking. Beyond the food, the space features an actual Shepard Fairey mural and Vietnamese art that makes the place feel alive, not trendy. There’s real energy here. This restaurant honors the past without being stuck in it. It reminds you that our Vietnamese culture is beautiful, something we share, and build from together. This is a spot I’ll keep coming back to and bringing people to every time I’m in San Diego.
The food was so delicious that I forgot to take a photo. I got the rice noodle bowl “the works” and it was amazing! Especially with that fish sauce they cure up to dress your bowl with it. Chefs kiss! My husband ordered the stew soup and it came with a bahn mi bread for dipping. He loved it. They have a kids menu which is great and they have a patio for when you bring your fur baby with you! 10/10!
Honestly my favorite Vietnamese restaurant in San Diego (and possibly the continental US haha). They're pho s+b with the oxtail and bone marrow is an explosion of flavor. Their vermicelli with everything on it is so fresh and delicious! 10/10 vibe, food, and staff!
Came here for a casual birthday dinner with my best friend and it was the best pho either of us have ever had! The broth is insanely delicious and if that was all they served, I would still come back. 10/10 recommend!
This is a great place to grab some noodles. They have a very customizable menu They do have a bar as well as soft drinks or hot tea. There are plenty of seats even if you go on a weekday. The servers were very kind and had great customer service. What I like about the soft drinks was it says it on the menu free refills and one of the waiters did get me a repo soda also they give you free water. My soup was very delicious and comes in a big bowl. You do have choices of your noodles of course I choose more of the traditional noodles but you can choose different noodles depending on your taste. Because this is in North Park I would highly recommend paying money to park in the parking l garage otherwise you'll be hunting for parking forever. The only negative I could think of for this restaurant would be their prices. But being a small business and this economy I was expecting to pay more than normal for this type of food.
The Best Pho in North Park and easily a contender for Top 3 Best Pho spots in San Diego. I especially love their variety of cocktails and non-pho options (as seen by the Bahn Mi pictured here). The pho itself is bit pricier than most spots, but I promise you it won’t cost you an Arm, Leg, Shank, or Bone and is made up for by the DELIGHTFUL price on Bahn Mi!
A Vietnamese Culinary Gem in North Park! Highly recommend their signature Bone Marrow Phở,The broth is rich and deeply flavorful, with the melted marrow adding a luxurious depth. Paired with wide rice noodles and fresh herbs, it's absolutely soul-satisfying! The restaurant features a modern industrial vibe with retro touches, creating a relaxed atmosphere perfect for casual hangouts with friends. We visited on a weekend evening--it was quite busy, and we waited about 30 minutes, so I'd recommend arriving early or visiting on a weekday. If you love creative Vietnamese cuisine, this is a must-visit spot in San Diego!Generous portions, authentic flavors, and yes--the bones are so good to gnaw on!
We loved this casual Vietnamese restaurant in San Diego. The food was outstanding. The servers were very friendly too. We tried the Passion iced tea, the Pho-Rench Dip, the vegetarian egg rolls and the Banh Xeo tacos. The side of dipping broth for the banh mi sandwich was so good, this is one of the best banh mi's I've ever had. The egg rolls were crispy and delicious and the tacos outstanding as well. Prices were good for the quality, our bill came to $49 for the two of us.
VERY GOOD PHOOOOOOOOOO Very good. Better than any pho that I had in Pittsburgh. The sprouts were super fresh and the portion, oh my, was definitely filling. Ordering was a little bit pushy but I think it might because they were about to get super busy. We went in 1 minute after they opened (noon). Broth was so good that i drank it all.
Amazing Vietnamese food at Shank & Bone! We started with the grilled scallop on the half shell which was delightful, four scallops total. Then for entrees we had the brisket & bone bahn mi and the braised catfish with the sweet sour shrimp soup. Everything was incredible, very flavorful, we ate until the plates were clean. Great staff and the food came out quickly. We sat on the dog friendly patio. Highly recommend!
Come for the pho, stay for the other amazing speciality dishes! Personally, I’m in lust with the beef carpaccio. It’s so different than other carpaccio dishes I’ve had. Trick is to get a bite with a bit of everything: the beef, onion, watercress, peanuts, vinaigrette, AND the sliced lemon/lime WITH THE PEEL! I’d have picked around the citrus or just tried to squeeze the juice if I hadn’t eaten with a friend that showed me. The citrus slice is super thin and even the peeling adds to the texture and flavor of the dish. I could make it a meal in itself and if there’s more than two people at the table eating it, I have to get two orders. The broths are fantastic, the wide noodles are fantastic (but are hand made, so get there early if you want to try them) and their specials are interesting and delicious. I had the caramelized catfish with pork lardon in a hot clay pot that was divine (but did need to have more of the bones removed before serving, in my opinion. But taste was extraordinary!) The bone marrow is also a must-have for each visit. My second time in, the manager/host (owner?) recognized me. Great service.
My recent visit to a left me thoroughly impressed, I ordered their Rice Plate “The Works” with some shrimp spring rolls, and their fried chicken. It was nothing short of spectacular. The thick sliced BBQ beef, BBQ pork, Shrimp was tender and packed with flavor, a testament to the kitchen's skill in marinating and grilling. Each bite was an excellent balance of savory and slightly sweet — a complimenting blend of flavors. The Shrimp Spring Rolls were excellent as well. Accompanying the plate were aromatic jasmine rice and a salad. The rice was fluffy and served as the ideal canvas to soak up the delicious beef juices and sauces. The vegetables provided a refreshing contrast, enhancing the overall balance of the dish. What truly stood out was the attention to detail in the presentation. The plate was garnished with vibrant herbs, adding a touch of freshness and color that not only pleased the palate but also the eyes.
We had a choice of four places to meet our friend and this is what he chose because it was different from his norm. It was a great choice. The service was friendly from the first hello until we finally headed out. The menu is mouth watering just reading it. Our server had good suggestions and everyone was more than satisfied with what they chose. I had the Shank rice plate (filet mignon) and I'm still drooling thinking about it. He went for The Works rice plate which was also amazing . My friend went for the Bun bowl and had a good amount leftover for tomorrow. After chatting a while longer we decided on dessert and tried the Chinese donuts and the Affogato. Those donuts were perfection and the Affogato was so good. Definitely add this place to your list, and you'll for sure want to come back
We ordered the Signature Pho S&B and the Pho Fries. The price point is too high. We were excited to get pho in San Diego, because we are from Utah. While the pho was good, it wasn't great for $18-25 - twice the price where I'm from in Utah, and comparable quality. Some cuts of meat were higher quality, but on the whole, the price point didn't make sense. It's possible that this is a California thing, and if so, disregard. It was still good. The ambiance and service is good, this is a good place to go on a first date. But not if you're a student. Or poor.
