Quaint restaurant that offers one of the most unique Omakase in the city which while grounded in tradition also highlights a more fun and unique side thanks to the young chef’s approach. What truly ties it all together is having the only full natural / biodynamic wine (or sake) program pairing in the city. Offering not just a few bottles but an impressive bottle collection that matches any wine bar in the city. An absolute must visit for not just a special night out but an warm and inviting space to be in on a casual visit thank to a wonderful front of the house staff.
Komatsuya is a bit of a hidden gem tucked up in Mission Hills. Behind the Spanish exterior is a clean and quiet restaurant there offers an 8-course Omakase kaiseki-ryori dinner experience; it felt like we had been welcomed into someone’s home. This is a tremendous breath of fresh air and respite for something more traditional (with a kiss of modern flair) compared to the other omakase offerings that are plentiful throughout San Diego. The staff talks you through each course and I really appreciated that they communicated if the chef intends for you to experience certain dishes in a certain way. We brought our books with us to pass the time in between the well-spaced courses. The staff took great care of us and let us be (they were focused on ensuring the dinner really feel like something special in store for anyone who walked through the doors). Another review here described the experience as if a story were being told, and I must second that. The chef designs the menu with so much care and thoughtfulness that you’ll appreciate the contrast and various complexities that are evident across (and within) each course; by the end of the meal, you’re left feel pleasantly satisfied with tensions released. Kind of like a massage or in our case, like having just finished reading a good book. I was comfortably full (not irresponsibly (over)full) by the end of the meal. I’m so pleased to have found this spot. Looking forward to see what they’ve got in store next month!
Start by saying the food is absolutely delicious. The sake was fantastic and the Japanese IPA hit the spot. The only issue with the place is the ambiance. The fish coolers on the bar were empty, which just created a barrier between us and the chef. If you're not using them, just take them out. Also, would be great if they played Japanese Christmas/rock music instead of American or something. The menu is a bit confusing, too. You can make any Nigiri a maki roll but you have to ask, not stated on the menu--if you're sharing this makes it a lot easier to order. I get it, you don't want to be a Sushi Deli--please don't-- but you got to bend a little bit. Put the Maki rolls on the menu, put the "specials" board where everyone can see it, encourage some walk-in customers. The service was great, it's just a little boring. At one point I told my wife, "I'm going to stop whispering." 😂 Regardless, I'll be back, the food is way too good. Lastly, the prices were fair for high-end sushi, we paid significantly less than Hane for similar amount of food and drink. Go, you won't regret it.
let me preface this review by saying I don’t love sushi. that said, Komatsuya’s omakase is one of my favorites. they strike a lovely balance between showcasing the quality of ingredients but still adding flavors and textures you may not have had before (lotus root, sunchoke, burdock). i like that it’s not all raw fish or seafood, they even have an all vegan omakase! if you’re looking for a intimate dining experience with exquisite attention to detail, this is the spot. major plus for having natural wines, the sushi chef is also a somm. can’t wait for them to add a wine pairing!
Legendary...8 courses... perfect blending of savory, sweet, salty, umami... I have already made a reservation for next month before I left! Both the vegetarian menu and the menu change 2x a month.

One of the finest restaurants in San Diego. Their top tier chefs craft new seasonal dishes each month. Seriously, the best food I've ever eaten. Excellent wine pairing options as well. Truly a hidden gem, tends to not be busy. Go now before the whole city realizes they are missing out!

The family is a wonderful, generos host. They are good at putting themselves in other people‘s shoes and will not dissapoint and guest.
The nigiri at Komatsuya is wonderful, I had salmon, chutoro and amaebi, they were truly great. We also had udon noodles and tofu, which were delicious and cucumber salad and edamame, both of which were exquisite. We are from San Francisco and have travelled in Japan. This place is really wonderful, it is a very nice environment and the service is perfect. What a pleasant surprise in our road trip !
Authentic Japanese food. I loved the imported beef dish as well as the sushi. If you want Omakase but more than just sushi I would recommend this place.

Great place. Service was excellent. I like the vibe of the place. I had their thin crust during the Taste of Mission Hills in 2025. I did not think that their thin crust pizza was worth writing home about... but their deepdish is great! We had pepperoni and mushrooms for our toppings. Super filling pie. This is a place I would actually take visiting family members. I haven't eaten much deep dish pizza in my time, but I'd happily give this an 8.5 or 9/10 for how much I enjoyed it!
Today was my first time going to a Lefty’s, I was greeted as soon as I walked in. The entire team was extremely friendly. I absolutely love human interaction and was curious what the story behind Lefty’s was, Lauren gracefully took time out of her day to tell me all about her pizza journey. Pizza was recommended to me by coworkers and it did not disappoint. 10/10 recommend and i will be coming back. Thank you Lefty’s!
What a cool place! Appears to be a tiny take out joint, but just keep going back down the hall through a cozy room with tables and then a big outdoor heated patio with picnic tables and corn hole. But the Chicago Italian Beef sandwich. OOOOOHHHH yummmm! Tender beef , spicy giardenier ,Au jus and the perfect roll... What a treat!!
Review caveat- I’ve never had the pleasure of eating Lefty’s pizza. BUT I had the best customer service experience at Lefty’s this holiday season. I wanted to get a gift card for a friend in San Diego. When I called to do this, the staff politely shared that they only had physical cards. We game planned on how to get it to my friend for the holidays. And he agreed to text when he confirmed with his boss. Well turns out the boss was Lauren, the owner. Ten minutes after I got off the phone, I got a call from Lauren and she offered to mail it to my friend to make it easier! Thirty minutes later she’d texted me a picture of the gift card with the stamped envelope. I still can’t believe how kind and generous Lauren was. Lefty’s will be my first stop when I get to San Diego.
Pizza was very tasty. the crust was nice and crispy. Their stubborn craft sodas are very refreshing and smooth. Definitely must try even if youre not in the neighborhood.

A killer place if you are missing Chicago or just want some really great pizza and food. 21 years the owner has turned out some amazing food and created a great vibe and experience for San Diego. Come check them out. Great staff great service and you won't leave hungry that is for sure.

Had an amazing experience dining at Lefty’s Pizza. The Owner Lauren was beyond friendly and extremely accommodating. My party of 15+ people were never short of service. Our main server Daniel was on top of drinks, bringing extra plates/utensils and, refilling water. Our entire experience was above and beyond what was expected. We will definitely be back. Thank you Lefty’s!
It's pizza and it's really good. Enough said. The sides are also great. We literally ate every last bite of the garlic fries (see before and after). They also do frequent Pencils n' Pistos events where there's a DJ, they cover the tables in paper and encourage you to doodle, and they have a market with local artists and makers. Good times all around.
New favorite spot for Chicago fare! This place is a big deal - offering whole pies, or fresh and authentic deep-dish by the slice that easily rivals Lou's or Uno's right here in SoCal! So you can get a delicious Chicago dog and a fresh slice on the side if you're extra hungry. My wife ordered an Antipasto Salad which was thoroughly stacked with fresh ingredients, and generous with the meat cuts - and my son got a meatball sub which he adored. Even the fries were fresh and crisp. On the dog front, this was not a Cali-dog dressed in Chicago clothing. I had a Char-cheese dog, and this was the real deal. Freaking delicious. I'm not sure what they're doing, but I hope they never change it! If you're going to visit, arrive early, parking can take a while. Also, if you're ordering a whole pie they can take between 33-60 minutes - hence, last orders at 8pm! This place is amazing, so do NOT pass it by.
First time back at Lefty’s in 5 years, and this place has not missed a beat. I would always get the Italian beef, and got it again, and was blown away at how ridiculously good it is. Absolutely superb sandwich. Dipped, both peppers and aju on the side. Every time I go, the sandwich gets better.
I was in the mood for some deep dish pizza & found this great place. Being new, I did not know I could order by the slice so I ordered a custom deep dish pie w pepperoni, red onions, tomato & and garlic. Since it takes about 30 minutes to cook, I then heard people ordering by the slice so I got one Veggie & one meat slice along w a delicious house salad to share. Beer, wine & sodas available along w an outdoor patio & indoor seating. Very tasty pizza & a small salad is enough for 2.
First time at this location we usually go to the north park location. This location is way bigger, there’s an inside and outside patio to sit. It’s decorated beautifully and they even have corn hole outside. I love the way they did a “toddler cut” on my son’s pizza I’ve never seen that but a very nice touch I appreciate! My husband is from Chicago and this is his favorite SD spot from all the others. He says the other restaurants have zero chance compared to Lefty’s!!!!!
Food here was delicious. Outside back patio was perfect for our large group with children. Staff was very welcoming and attentive. Stuffed and deep dish pizzas are made to order so be prepared for a 30 min -1 hour wait time for those. Rest of our food came out at very reasonable intervals.

They also have a slice, salad and drink lunch special. Been coming to this location for years and have ordered mainly pizzas but occasionally also have ordered appetizers. Their artichoke spinach bread is amazing (and it’s veggies so it must be good for you, right?!?) Their stuffed pizza takes much longer to bake but I love the sauce on that pie. Typically you cannot eat more than one or two slices of that so we normally only order stuffed if in a group of people. Ordering a whole pie always seems to taste better than the pizza by the slice for some reason but it could just be my imagination. :) They are decorated with all things Chicago inside and have the typical wood seating you would see in a typical authentic Chicago pizzeria. They also have an outdoor seating area. Service is always friendly and efficient. You place your order at the register and they have food runners bring your food out to you. Parking can be a little challenging at times but there is a paid public lot down the street and paid meter street parking as well in the area.

As a Chicago boy, this place gave me all the feels as soon as I saw that big Vienna Beef sign out front. The pizza was solid, the hot dogs on point and the atmosphere was *chefskiss* Chicago. Get here, youse are gonna like it.
We finally got the opportunity to check this place. The pizza is great, you can taste the freshness of the ingredients and the quality. All food is tasty. The appetizers do need a little help as you will see in the pics. Food is great but they need to improve on the customer service… the staff is over relaxed, this is still a business an some level of professionalism has to be present. Omakase + wine pairing was perfect. The big letdown was in the service. Before we were done with our final course, the staff was already cleaning up and this was disruptive. We felt like we were being pushed out the door, even though the restaurant wasn’t set to close for another 1.5 hours. For the price, I expected more.
Hmmm, I’m sad. The last time we tried Lefty’s was probably 12 years ago. We were craving deep dish, so naturally we thought of Lefty’s. Either our tastebuds changed or it went downhillI or Pequod’s left that kind of impression that I’ll forever be biased towards any deep dish pizza. It was mediocre, horrible crust, and we just left feeling sort of “meh.” It wasn’t a total flop, but i don’t think we’ll be itching to return.
