What a great, healthy option! I really like this place. You have choices for granola and base and chia and everything else. My acai bowl was out of this world! If you're looking for LIV juice bar, this is the place. Also, lots of parking located behind the store so you don have to fight for street parking.
The only place I can find an Ube bowl... it's soooooo good
Very good service, everything is fresh and amazing. The bowl with the ube base is absolutely amazing!
I love their smoothies and bowls!!! Love that I can customize them or just pick from their options (they have a bunch) but for sone reason the thing I love the most about this place is their turkey sandwich!!!! Idk it’s a simple sandwich yet it’s by far my favorite thing to order when I’m in the area.
I can't very well express with words the addiction I have developed surrounding a roots bowl. Not only are the people beautifully kind but they make some outstanding açai bowls I have every tasted. The balance their great bases with healthy fresh toppings and I with without a doubt keep bringing people and filling up punch cards. I highly recommend visiting soon.
So this may be a tad graphic. But holy mother! So I have an interesting reaction to food when it’s like REALLY good. We’ll call it “pants feelings” And this bowl took me where I didn’t even know I needed to go. The consistency is brilliant The toppings are numerous and can fit any palate. And the place has parking in the back to make it easier to access! Literally sitting in my car breathing heavy. No. I am not high. Lol Go and git you a good time!
Locally sourced Farmers Market an upgrade compared to other places . I always ask is it organic ..many times it is not don't be surprised. There are only two healthy venues in Hillcrest. This one offers really good fresh vegetarian drinks, and varieties of bowls including sandwiches sandwiches. Always quick service. I go there frequently.
Love the smoothies here! The staff is friendly and handles orders promptly. Outside seating is perfect to enjoy the ambience of Hillcrest. I definitely recommend trying it out if your in the area!
Roots Bowls is my go to açaí bowl shop. Not only do they have a huge selection, but the staff is super friendly and the place is always clean. The combinations are endless with 4 different types of granola and bases, tons of fresh fruit, various seeds and berries, 2 kinds of chia pudding, honey or agave, proteins like peanut or almond butter, even bee pollen or matcha powder. Roots Bowls has it all! If you’re not sure about what base you want, they’ll happily give you a sample taster spoon. I eat here nearly every day. You may have to wait a little if there’s a long line, but they give care and attention to each order. Also, the employees work really well together, so it never takes too long when there’s multiple people behind the counter. Best place I’ve found by far!
Friendly customer service and the acai bowl was good and affordable.
I usually only get the mango mania smoothie but today I tried their Tuna Sandwich and it was also excellent! No pic of the sandwich because i gobbled it down lol 🤤😋
THE BEST Açaí bowls in the city. I’ve had bowls all over SD & hands down this place is superior 🤙🏼 Ingredients always fresh, & the roots bowl in particular is SO good. Prices are fair too. Friendly employees, Rosa was very sweet. I love Roots Bowls I’ll recommend them over any place here.
Centrally located on University Ave. Açai bowls, sandwiches, avocado toast, fresh juices, smoothies, etc... Fresh ingredients, we ordered the wake me up, root bowl, and sandwich it was pretty good. Great service. They have inside and outside seating. Definitely a great spot.
If you like açaí bowls this spot is the place to go. They have a ton of fresh toppings and plenty of options to choose from. Its convenient to grab on the go or if you want to hangout and enjoy your bowl there they even have games you can play. Worth checking out if you have a sweet tooth or like quality bowls.
I have tried several Acia bowls in San Diego and this 1 is the best. It’s super fresh, all the fruit is cut into bite size pieces and it has so many choices to add on. I am in love plus the Chai latte was delicious. You won’t be disappointed.
The acai bowls here have the FRESHEST fruit. Honestly, they are better than acai bowls I've had in Maui. And the girls that work here are super friendly and hardworking.
Absolutely delicious! So many choices. I did the Custom Bowl after asking how to get a "traditional Acai bowl ". It had Acai pudding, chia seeds, strawberries, bananas, mango, and hemp granola. Very fast friendly service! I highly recommend!
Nice experience. Great variety and fair prices. The Açaí is amazing and the service is pleasant. I had the 12 oz Roots Bowl, wish I went with the 8oz as it was way to much. If you are looking for a light meal or a power snack after a great workout check this place out! If you have any food allergy concerns just keep an eye on the staff, they really aren’t trained in this area.
Came here on a Saturday morning after landing and I gotta say this is probably my favorite açaí bowl spot in the area! The prices are reasonable and the bowl itself is so flavorful and delicious! The area is a little sketch but there are lots of street parking in front of the store. Highly recommend!
Amazing value and the best acai bowls I've had in SD. The toppings are unlimited, the fruit is fresh, and portions are generous. They make sandwiches as well and my club sandwich was twice as big as I had expected. Adding this as a staple to my list of favorite places in Hillcrest.

ROOTS ROCKS! They definitely have the Açaí bowl down to science... they are soooo good! The texture of the açaí, coconut sorbet and pitaya are perfect. One of the best we’ve had!
Excellent Acai Bowl, with a nice variety of fresh fruit, like mango kiwi,etc..Very chill atmosphere..
Hands down THEE BEST Acai bowls I have ever had, my favorite is to Root Bowl. So many options of topping, granola, and a good variety of other things on the menu as well. Very polite and friendly staff! The even gave my dog some turkey meat while I was outside eating my acai bowl on their patio. Seriously a gem of a place.
A healthy food place, i came here to get a fruit bowl. There’s a menu with preset items, or you can make your own bowl. I decided on one of the preset bowls, the north park one which is matcha and a bunch of other things. I will say that quality of the bowl is very good, it tastes fine, and should be enjoyable. The service could be a bit better.
EXCELLENT açaí bowls here! (So much more than açaí as the base! They’ve got sorbet bases with coconut, ube, matcha, açaí, and chia pudding.) The bowls are a little pricey but WOW what an ingredient list! Multiple options for granola. Tons of fruits. Toppings you can’t find in a lot of other “bowl” places: goji berries, cocoa nibs, matcha powder, etc. Love their selection. My ONLY complaint is their firm stance on dogs. The other places around them allow dogs on the patios, but there’s no way at Roots to place your order or go inside to get it when it’s ready if you have a dog with you. It’s totally fine to not allow dogs, but AT LEAST please open the drive-up window that’s already there to take walk-up orders for people with dogs. You’re in the center of one of the most walkable neighborhoods in San Diego and a LOT of people take their dogs. Again, doesn’t have to be inside or even allow them in the door, but use the window you already have to service those customers because as it is, I often have to walk next door to Liv Juices where dogs are welcomed. One star off for that reason.
I called in an order, never having been to this place. I use to visit whatever was here before, or before the remodel? lol i don't know. I wasn't sure what the menu or prices were. I was hoping for the most basic açai bowl. The person who answered was really helpful and patient. I didn't realize they were creating a build your own bowl when asking me what options I wanted, which was a few dollars more than the basic. :/ they just kept telling me "it was included". Oh well, that's on me I suppose. One of the fruits I had been offered was kiwi. They were super hard, definitely not ripe. :( The rest was really tasty though!
I love this place, I’ve been a customer since the first day they opened. The Açai bowls are all made from scratch. Everything is fresh. I must say the their Açai bowls are the best in the San Diego area. I’am from out of town so every time I come to SD, I make sure I stop here to get my bowl. One little problem I must say is that their customer service has changed so much compare to the first year they opened. The women employees are so rude and snobby. Not sure why they carry that kind of attitude but it makes it very uncomfortable and my experience unpleasant now. I hope management/ owner makes changes. So have your Guard up. Other then that enjoy your Açai bowls.

Good acai, lots of topping options! Definitely recommend building your own bowl and heaping it with all the yummy add-ons. Just a warning that prices have gone up and some things are extra $ now. Good parking out back.

Legitimately one of the best açaí bowls I’ve ever had. In tried the root bowl and loved it. They have a build your own bowl and they have a few other menu options. They had no public bathroom and the customer service was poor. If you’re just there for the food, go for it!

Popped in for a quick snack. Very clean. Fresh looking ingredients. Ordered a smoothie and just wasn’t impressed. Didn’t even finish the smoothie because the ratios were so off. $7 is far to overpriced for a small four ingredient smoothie. Somewhat slow service as well.
I honestly wouldn’t recommend. The two people working were not very nice and definitely did not want to be there. The woman working today was very rude. I waited in line for 20 minutes which is fine because I’m patient and understanding and it’s not the end of the world but... I was confused about the base and there was a line and I have pretty bad social anxiety and she was very impatient and had a bad attitude so I settled. I know the masks may make it hard to work fast or catch your breath. But it shouldn’t affect how you treat people. This was my first time and it wasn’t worth 16 dollars. Though I did love the decor. Also the serving size for the fruit. He literally sprinkled about 5 blueberrys and only two strawberry’s for a 16 dollar bowl.
Acai bowls were just ok, mine had more granola than acai, also $11 is pricey for a small bowl. Customer service was nonexistent, we walked in and after trying to catch the attention of one employee were completely ignored for several minutes, they didn't even acknowledge that we walked in. It was weird. Won't be back
I have Uber eats from this place on several occasions, but i had never visited the location. I was so disappointed by the service, the staff is unfriendly and rude. When placing the order I was told they couldn’t make the oatmeal because they didn’t have water when clearly there were stacks of water at plain sight. Nevertheless something else was ordered but they seem dismissive and turned around even though I was not done ordering . There were several people waiting and there was no engagement with anyone. Not a simple thank you. Their bowls are good but the service is horrendous and honestly I won’t be coming back based on the experience. It’s also absurd that after that experience I’m expected to tip.
My little brother went into this location to grab us bowls, while I waited in the car he came out extremely upset, tears in his eyes. and I was shocked. The woman working the counter was very rude and condescending. Talking down to him because he hadn’t been there before and wasn’t familiar with the menu. He asked for the bowls to go and she rolls her eyes and smashes the lids on top, didn’t close them and wrapped them in cling film. The bowls were dripping everywhere all over the plastic bag they were shoved in. This was a very unfortunate experience especially during the first day of pride month.

When a customer wants there bowl made a certain way you expect the business to comply, I got the complete opposite they only make it there way and there way only without respecting what I wanted. I don't like my fruit smashed by a lid and stuffed into the bowl which I expressed several times there solution was to give me less and charge me more. 20$ for a 16oz bowl is unexceptable. The bowl itself the acai was not to temperature which melted as I got into it the other ingredients are pretty simple hard to mess up.
We used to love this place and drive way out of our way to get acai here as it was my kiddos fave. I say used to because we will not be going back. Not only have prices been creeping up over the past few months, but now they are nickel and dime-ing like crazy. Guys in front of me - their bowl wasn't made the way they were expecting. The girl said that it had already been made so she won't remake it unless they pay for 2. I can't have strawberries and was asked if I wanted different fruit. The one I wanted is now an extra charge. I ordered the same thing I've been ordering for over a year and have never had an extra charge. Girl behind me was asked what other toppings she wanted. She answered and was told, oh, that's extra. If it's extra, why ask?! I didn't see any signs up about everything being an extra upcharge now. I explained this is frustrating and asked the person working if it could get back To management this is ridiculous. Her respo se was, you can try to call but managers are never here. So honestly- I'm never going back.
Really was a fan of this place, until some poor customer service and the day I absolutely had to use their bathroom very quickly. I was told to go next door in a not so nice way, wow. I get it when establishments don’t really have public bathrooms, but I had literally seen the male employee let someone use their bathroom that was in plain view the day before. I literally had just sat through 45 mins of traffic and my bladder was about to explode. I’ve been a loyal customer and was so let down by their demeanor. The ladies are not friendly.
Customer service is poor, as was the smoothie I had today. I got the detox greens and there were still large ice chunks. Also, the worker added ingredients not in the description on the menu. She added either agave or honey, and I hope it was agave because I don't eat honey and that would be a big conflict if she added ingredients I couldn't eat that weren't mentioned on the menu. It was 2 middle aged women working today, and both were cold and condescending. For $7 I expect much better service and definitely better food. Also a large chunk of customers are probably vegan like myself, so for them to be adding possibly non-vegan foods into their products without disclosing it is a huge issue.
On the menu, it says that they make their Detox Greens smoothie with an organic almond milk… lies. Watched them making it several times, and it is not. Also, they add agave syrup to the smoothie… there is nothing about it on the menu, and I wasn’t even asked if I wanted it in my smoothie… too sweet and not that healthy.
I had no complaints about the quality of the product, just didn’t enjoy opening the box of my sandwich to see not one hair but 3 hairs within the sandwich. I ended up not eating that half of the sandwich and inspected the other piece which thankfully didn’t have any hair. Do better guys, my first impression of this place is this??I’ve worked in food service so I know how easily this could’ve been avoided. Definitely won’t be coming back, this was just careless behavior because there was no rush as no other customers walked in as I ordered or waited for the order to be ready. $10 for a sandwich with multiple hairs between the slices of turkey is CRAZYYY
Normally this place is one of our FAVS. But they have been getting more and more stingy with their servings. You pay around $9/$10 for even the smallest bowl so to skimp seems INSANE. The first two pics are what we are used to getting for our $. The last pic was our bowl today ...
