Opinions de Amber India San Francisco
Exceptional and authentic Indian food prepared with fresh ingredients and presented in a highly professional manner. The service was amazing. Large vegetarian options and the dishes were innovative with great flavor and taste.
I came to this restaurant because I love Indian food. The chicken I ordered was sizzling hot when they brought it over to me. The service was very friendly an attentive to my needs. I highly recommended this place. I give them 5 stars ⭐️
This place is truly exceptional, not only did they serve some of the best Indian food I’ve ever had, but the hospitality was just as memorable as the meal. Even though they were very busy, they graciously made me an off menu dish I was craving, mushroom matar, and it was absolutely delicious. They made my dining experience feel very personal and special. That level of kindness and care is rare. Everything was flavorful, beautifully prepared, and deeply satisfying. An unforgettable meal from start to finish, I will definitely be back!
Excellent, delicious Indian food. We wandered in after 1:00 on New Year's Day to find a lunch buffet featuring a wonderful selection of appetizers, main courses, add ons and desserts. Even though it was later, food was replenished generously. The staff was super, even warning us at 2:25 that the buffet would be closing. Highlights for me were the curry fish, butter chicken, papadums and mango custard. (We saw other guests ordering from the menu.) For a meal in the middle of a major city, the price was very fair.
I had a business dinner here so I couldn’t take photos but the food was very nicely delivered to our table’s spice (or lack there of) levels. It was really tasty, some of the better Indian food I have had. The staff was also super polite and made the guests feel very welcome, so I was happy with this spot for a business dinner. Lots of families around d us too, so it would have been great for an I formal dinner too. I would recommend to others, definitely.
My coworkers and I go here every month for the lunch buffet. Very reasonable price and great service. The servers are friendly and always check up on you and refill your water and naan. The food here is very tasty and they have something different at the buffet every month. The butter chicken and goat curry is so good, I can't get enough of it. They have a variety of different foods and desserts. I always leave Happy and full after. Very tasty dishes and great service.
Visited Amber in downtown SFO after checking their great Google reviews, and it truly lived up to the hype. The ambience is spacious, vibrant, and welcoming, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Service was top-notch—staff were warm and attentive. Tried the malai chicken kebab which was freshly made, and when I asked for more spice, they promptly replaced it with a spicier version along with delicious chutneys. The chicken biryani was unique—different from Texas-style Hyderabad dum biryani but equally flavorful and made with fresh white meat. Though a bit pricier compared to Texas, the overall experience—food, service, and vibe—makes it worth it. Highly recommend Amber for anyone looking for quality Indian food and a great place to hang out
Serves a modern take on Indian food (I am not sure why other reviews say it is traditional food, but maybe the lunch buffet is). The overall experience was great, with really flavorful food and attentive service. The ambience is nice and welcoming too. We had an eggplant dish with scamorza cheese filling, bhel, paneer, and a variety of their naans. Definitely worth a visit!
Easily the best Indian food I’ve had in the United States! Amber offers an exceptional spread, outstanding quality, and excellent service. It doesn’t get more authentic than this. Every dish is thoughtfully crafted—more a work of art and skill than mere cooking. Compared to other restaurants, the prices are very reasonable. I thoroughly enjoyed their buffet, and the Indian sweets were truly out of this world. Amber is a true ambassador of India’s rich culinary heritage and incredible flavors. This is my first 5-star rating for an Indian restaurant.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ In all areas I’ve been coming to Amber for over 13 years, and it remains one of my favorite Indian restaurants in the Bay Area. When I lived here, I was a regular, and even now, I make it a point to visit whenever I’m in town. The ambience is inviting, the seating is comfortable, and the service is among the best I’ve experienced at any Indian restaurant. I’ve dined here countless times—whether for their daily buffet or à la carte dinners (at least 50+ times!)—and they have never missed the mark on taste or service. Whether dining solo, with a small group, or with a large party, my experience has always been exceptional. As a vegetarian, I’ve tried nearly everything on their menu over the years, and I’ve never been disappointed. But this time, they surprised me! Since I was dining alone, they introduced me to their Thali menu for dinner, which I didn’t even know existed. It’s a perfect option for solo diners—highly recommended! (See the menu attached.) I ordered the Vegan/Gluten-Free Thali, and every dish was superb. The Kale Kofta Curry could have been better, but overall, the meal was excellent. As always, the service was stellar. Amber SF remains a must-visit for me whenever I’m in the Bay Area. Looking forward to my next visit!
Went there on Saturday evening and got a table instantly. It got busy around 8pm so probably it’s better to use reservation, especially for bigger parties. The place is very spacious, has several large areas and all of them are very cosy and intimate. I liked the menu, as it wasn’t too large and it was pretty easy to find what you’re in the mood for and make an order. We went with Tandoori Chicken, Malabari shrimp and Garden collage from tandoori. All the dishes were delicious and the presentation was great too. The service was also good. We had our water refilled without having to ask and our waiters were knowledgeable and friendly. I’m definitely putting this place to my to-go list for Indian food and can recommend it for cosy dining experience in SF downtown.
Wonderful lunch buffet with a substantial array of lovingly prepared dishes to satisfy your appetite! Staff are extremely kind and responsive to customer needs and requests.

Best Brunch in town! Awesome buffet (best butter chicken!) with free mimosa or sparkling wine and Naan made to order. The deserts were amazing too, including tiramisu and cheesecake.

The lamb kebabs were generous in size and delicious. Combined with the garlic naan bread and a great Malbec wine, my day was made!
A great option for curry in SF. Good food, service and nice ambience. We shared the kebab platter between three as a starter. Main dish I recommend the Delhi chicken curry with a garlic naan washed down with a Taj Mahal beer. Hits the spot.
Amber India in San Francisco is a standout destination for those craving delicious and authentic Indian cuisine. The menu offers an impressive variety—everything from flavorful chaats and tender Chicken Tandoori to fragrant saffron rice and their standout butter chicken. Each dish is thoughtfully prepared, bursting with vibrant spices and perfectly balanced flavors. The atmosphere is classy and inviting, making it a great spot for both group gatherings and intimate dinners. With generous portions, attentive service, and consistently high-quality food, Amber India is a must-visit for anyone seeking a true taste of India in the city.
During my trip to San Francisco, this spot was conveniently close to my hotel, so one evening we decided to give it a try for dinner. The place was packed — likely thanks to a big conference happening nearby — and with no tables available, we ended up seated in the lounge. The vibe was busy and a bit loud, but still comfortable enough to hold a conversation. Service-wise, things were a bit on the slower side and definitely had room for improvement. We started off with cocktails, which were both solid and well-made. Since neither of us were too hungry, we kept the order simple. We began with ‘Bhapa Maach’— a dish close to my heart as a Bengali. Traditionally, I expect a steamed or smoked fish served dry, but here it arrived in a soupy gravy, made with what seemed like flounder or another white fish. The flavors were okay — not memorable, but not bad either. Oddly, the broth came without any accompaniment, which felt a bit incomplete. Next, we ordered kulcha alongside a goat meat (gosht) curry. This dish really delivered — rich, spicy, and packed with flavor, it instantly took me back to wedding-style ‘Kosha Mangsho’ back home. The portion was generous, but again, we weren’t too hungry, so it was just the right amount. We wrapped up with desserts: my friend had the Rasmalai, which tasted pretty much like standard store-bought fare. I went for the mango yogurt, expecting a baked version, but instead it resembled a simple parfait — mango pulp at the bottom and plain yogurt on top — underwhelming.
I had heard a lot about Amber Indian Restaurant, so I decided to give it a try. The ambience is very good, and you feel the positivity as soon as you enter. Walk-ins are allowed, but on busy days (especially weekends), they do accept reservations. Please note, you need to look for street or a public garage parking. Personally, I felt it is very pricey. Since I had a late lunch, I decided to go with starters and ordered just two items: Shrimp Ambotik and the Tandoori Sampler, along with Coke, Jeera Soda, and Lemonade. The total came to $100, including tip. The food was well done and the quantity was right. Quality-wise, it was satisfactory—nothing particularly amazing. They do serve liquor, if someone is looking for that option. Overall, the experience was good with attentive service. Food lovers can give it a try, but be prepared for the final bill.

The saag paneer was so good! We ordered that along with the butter chicken and garlic naan. All dishes were flavorful and tons of seating inside this outer mission restaurant. We ordered mild which was still very good spiciness but I think I can opt for medium next time. The staff was also friendly!
The service here is the big selling point. Extremely prompt, attentive, and proactive. They deserve every penny you're paying for the meal. The place is kept clean and spacious. The big misfortune of the locale is the that a lot of the food is just alright. We'll start good to bad. The naan is great here. The only issue is that they bring it out to you so you'll have to wait on them to get more naan. The butter chicken is excellent but I've had better butter chicken for a lower price at other places. The dosa station guy is chill if you like dosa. Drinks come with the buffet. The mimosa is a mango one but you could t really taste it. The sweet lassi is also pretty plain. The mango lassi is good though. Their dessert bar is bountieous and they have a great bit of vegetarian options. But there were only 5 non-veg options, one of which is fish, and only two were good. The fish is meh. The butter chick is great. The goat was meh. Then there were two chicken wings options?! For a meal that's just about $50/person, that's just not good enough. It's a shame because this place is so great everywhere else but the food is a bit lacking for the price.
Beautiful spot for dining, indoor and outdoor. Excellent service. Food is presented nicely, just rather bland for my tastes. I really prefer the spicier Indian food, but the flavor was lacking here. Very clean everywhere. Please note that the tip is already added to the bill, and so is a "Healthy San Francisco tax" or something....

The food at amber was extremely mediocre. What you are paying for is mostly location. However, the interior which was once nice is showing signs of dilapidation. My review is for the buffet, but I would think it translates to ala carte on the matter of food quality. The naan and roti were both puffy and doughy. This is a problem in many of the North Indian restraunts the bay area. My go-to place for good naan is bundu khan! Go there! The buffet offered 5-6 vegetarian dishes of which a couple were barely Indian like sauteed broccoli and corn. There were 4 non vegetarian dishes- butter chicken, mutton and fish. There was also tandoori chicken. The tandoori chicken was again not juicy and did not have the smokiness or charring you'd expect from a tandoor. Go to bundu khan, waah ji waah or kuku da dhaba for your kebabs instead. You'll thank me later! The chicken in the butter chicken was overcooked and the gravy was excessive sweet. Similar issue with the mutton. The only meat that was not overcooked was fish but for a tawa fish it was lacking in flavor. You are better off going to zareens or pakwan for curries. The desert was the only thing that was remotely tasty. The gualb jamun and barfi were ok but nothing to write home about. The service was the only thing that was good. It was prompt and attentive.
We went there seeing the good reviews here but were disappointed with the service... No warmth, no smiles absolutely from anybody ! Our server couldn't wait to take our order and rush from our table everytine she was there... no asking if we would like to order drinks, no checking on us on the meal and comfort, no asking for dessert at the end, just came us to inform the kitchens were closing !! There was not even the customary "enjoy your meal" after serving our food. I felt absolutely cheated out of paying the ridiculously priced fare. The manager, though polite had also no welcoming air about him. I wanted to share all this toward the end but there wasn't anybody around ! However good the food is, one doesn't feel the taste till it is served with love ! Would definitely not recommend this upscale place that was bereft of smiles, attention and genuine service .
Great location and great ambiance!!! The quality of the food was below average. However, very helpful staff and servers. I was looked after by Priyanka. She left no stone unturned- went all the nine yards to make sure she could make up for the poor quality of food by looking after all my needs. The other staff were solicitous and caring too. Hundred marks for service. I am a vegetarian. I had the thali - which had six steel containers. They were five dishes - only one was tasty. The quantity of these dishes was very scanty. Buck up Amber with the food - reputation of Indian food is at stake.
