Bon Nene is a must return for me! Food is flavorful, colorful and well portioned. We ordered the goat cheese salad, tonkatsu curry and gyudon (pictured), as well as the royal milk tea and the Edomachi beer. Our check also came with a complimentary chocolate pocky stick for each guest - so cute!
bon, nene is an adorable little restaurant in the mission that packs some DELICIOUS flavors into their food. the mentai spaghetti is a must-order; I’ve eaten a lot of mentai pasta dishes in my life and the one here is truly one of the best I’ve had. they keep their flavors simple but rich and it is just such a comfort and joy to eat. the katsu curry was like a warm hug as well! katsu a tad on the dry side; but the curry itself was beautifully hearty and comforting :-). the kushi-age special appetizer had great crispiness; i would say the oyster was the star of the show here. service was wonderful, and the decor was so cute—would definitely come here for a cute date or dinner with a friend visiting from out of town :-).
Cozy, yet refined, the well thought-out menu reflects how comforting the Japanese kitchen can be. Beef gyudon over udon noodle was perfectly balanced, served with a runny yolk egg to add a silky texture. Wash it down with some housemade ice tea, unique. Choice of 2 Onigiri Lunch Special with Fried Chicken Karaage, a true winner.
Cute Japanese restaurant with a nice ambiance inside. The Japanese pasta on the menu was what drew us to try this place out. The pasta was delicious. Tried the salmon nabe (hot pot) as well -- the broth was delicious but I'd probably have picked the pasta only in hindsight. Overall, would return and come more dishes!
Reminds you of a late night neighborhood Tokyo diner tucked away in a quiet street corner. Cozy vibes, great flavors and tasty beers. You have to put your name down on a notepad at the door to get seated. The place can get crowded during the evening dinner rush. So get here a little early.
Itadakimasu! Boy oh boy was this place amazing. Cozy vibe with Japanese comfort food to set the mood. The lunch set had everything I could’ve asked for in a meal. Greens, proteins, and some carbs to round out the meal. Spoiled myself with the royal milk tea iced and it did not disappoint. After a night out like yesterday, this was a much needed part of the recovery. Light 9.
I came in looking for faults but fell in love. Craving for katsu curry after 8p, I walked through a well lit neighborhood tucked in the middle of SF. Inside it was mostly empty except for 1 table in the corner. I hesitated but sat down & ordered my goto at any Japanese izakaya. They serve the chicken variety, on a bed of piping hot mushroom curry. Sadly the precious soft boiled egg was missing. It was 20min to closing & a few more patreons came in. No one was turned away. Down to the last 2 pieces of fried cutiet & the curry was still steaming. Rice was good. Atmosphere was good. The little treat with my bill was a nice touch. I hate giving 5 stars but
Food is incredibly delicious! I went more than once. Tried the chicken karaage, chicken katsu curry and shrimp katsu curry and not disappointed with any! One of the best Japanese food places in SF! Portions are extremely filling and prices are reasonable. Friendly staff and quick service. Definitely one of my favourite spots
This little corner restaurant is so cozy and cute. We came here on the recommendation from a friend and it was great. The mentaiko pasta and chicken karaage were so good! The yuzunade was also great. Feels like comfy Japanese street food in a local eatery. Excited to try more things later.
Great authentic Japanese Dining experience! I love every dish we have ordered: chicken karaage, Maguro bowl, and the mentaiko spaghetti. The highlight for the savory dish would be the mentaiko where each string noodle is well flavored with the egg roe and sauce. Amazing work! However, the true highlight for me is the dessert of the day, aka the cheesecake. Even though it is a simple vanilla based flavor, the cheesecake is made to look like a regular sponge cream cake with a filling at the center. Yet it is in fact a mix of fluffier light cheesecake with the firmer cheese pie. How this cake let my guard of the expectation down, and how it delivers to exceed and surprise. Sadly I didn't take the picture of the cake but please try one.
Amazing food experience! It didn’t take us long to be seated, we ordered the Mentaiko Spaghetti and maguro bowl. Wow! Excellent meals. I highly recommend this place for a good food experience .
no wait list, so on a friday night for 3 people at 6:30pm we waited 45 minutes to be seated the food is french fusion and japanese and it was delicious! The rice bowls have a lottt of rice, which is exactly what they do in japan, but i do wish it had an extra slice or two of fish >< the mentaiko spaghetti was actually way better than i thought it would be! it's a little smaller of a serving, but it's rich in flavor and very filling! beer, dinner , an desert were all delicious. the staff was very friendly (though they never refilled our waters)
We came about 30 minutes before closing and they were still able to quickly make our meal, which we really appreciated. We ordered the mentaiko pasta and the onigiri lunch special — $41 total. Honestly, everything was really good. The pasta portion was a bit smaller than I expected, but it was super creamy and buttery, and the mentaiko flavor wasn’t overpowering. The onigiri lunch set came with karaage, miso soup, and edamame. The onigiri didn’t have a ton of filling, but I still enjoyed it. Overall, solid meal and I’d definitely come back.
5 ⭐️ A super solid Japanese Italian place. I really liked the mentaiko spaghetti, the mushroom one is also good. Great karaage as well. Super vibey - gives intimate, cozy date spot with wooden accents. Would recommend!
Only waited a few minutes to get seated around noon on a weekday but the restaurant is pretty busy. There’s some outdoor seating too. The food is really good. I recommend the mentaiko udon. Food comes out pretty fast too. Great lunch vibes.
Came here with a few friends and we waited about 10 min to get seated. Good: - The food was so good, I loved the mentaiko spaghetti and it was so flavorful and tasty - The food all came out so quickly and it was way faster than expected too! - Curry rice portion sizes were good and it was very flavorful - Nice dim and quiet place to catchup with friends! Great ambiance and good for a long hang Bad: - The wait is pretty long - and it's so busy that I don't know if i can come back even if I wanted to! - The special miso ramen was a little bland Overall the experience was great and I would come back!
Mentaiko spaghetti has amazing umami it's a must try. Chicken Karage and Gyudon is also pretty good. Super cozy and chill place in Mission. The line was about 15 mins wait after 1pm on Friday
My partner told me about this place after seeing buzz about it on TikTok. We both wanted to try it and so we dined in on a Friday night. The restaurant offers outdoor heated seating, but we opted for indoors since we brought our baby. Fortunately, the wait was not too long because it sure turned frigid fast. As other reviewers mentioned the restaurant is quite cozy. They also have a communal high table. We were seated near the window with a high chair. We ordered the frozen beer, potstickers, chicken karaage, maguro bowl and mentai spaghetti for dinner. For dessert we had the apple tart and the Hokkaido cheesecake. We loved the cheesecake and the spaghetti. While the other dishes were solid, the spaghetti and the cheesecake were the stars! Looking forward to coming back to try the champignon pasta.
We got the tofu bowl, chicken katsu curry and chicken karaage- I had the tofu and it was a simple dish (wish it had more stuff besides so much rice) but tasted so good. Top tier service and very nice lively but intimate atmosphere - I DO wish they had more drink options, didn’t love the wine picks or the sake I got but that wasn’t the main event.
upscale japanese comfort food tucked in the mission neighborhood. the food was top tier, highly recommend the mentaiko spaghetti, onigiri and dessert. service was prompt and friendly and interior design was so inviting and warm. overall would highly recommend and come back! yuzu beer: tasty but thought it would have more yuzu flavoring small bites: was given this for free since they forgot to make out dishes. skippable. takoyaki: the takoyaki itself was decent but the dipping sauce elevated the dish. enjoyed but wouldn’t get again chicken karaage: a solid and well made dish you know what to expect. paired well with the spaghetti. onigiri: must get!! perfectly seasoned and crispy. mentaiko spaghetti: lives up to the hype, must try. such a unique umami and seafood flavor and pasta cooked perfectly. katsu curry: solid katsu and well made chicken. hits the spot. hokkaido cheesecake: highlight of the night, top tier dessert. creamy and not too dense nor sweet. perfectly executed.

The Mentaiko Spaghetti and cheese cakes are the best. The appetizers were ok; wasn't super big fan of their Takoyaki or Karage but the Hijiki Salad was pretty interesting

Love the food here. Reminds me of the food I love to eat when I'm in Tokyo

Cute restaurant on the corner of 21st and Alabama. Chicken karaage was perfectly seasoned and crispy. Champignon spaghetti was delicious but rather salty. Spaghetti was al dente. Waitress was super speedy aand personable. Looking forward to going back to try their brunch menu. Came back again 9 months later. Food is still great. Frozen asahi was interesting and delicious! Karaage, maguro bowl and mentaiko spaghetti were on point.
Small, charming Japanese-French restaurant with a small but well-curated menu and good service. We shared a hijiki salad and I ordered the gyudon for my main course—both were good but not spectacular. There was absolutely nothing wrong with either of them, but they didn't strike me as particularly special. My wife, who'd been to Bon, Nene before and knew what she was doing, went straight for the mentaiko spaghetti, which was amazing. The drinks menu had a few beers you don't see that often—I got the Kyoto White Yuzu Ale, which was crisp and flavorful. I'll go back, for sure. I had high expectations based on my wife's recommendation, and indeed, the mentaiko spaghetti lived up to her high praise. The other dishes didn't wow me quite as much, but they were still pretty solid, and although the portions aren't huge, the prices seem fair to me.
Menu Is Limited... The Seating Is Very Limited... Everything We Had Was Good In Flavor... NOT Too Many Options for a Pollotarian As Mys3lf So I Settled For Chicken Katsu Which Had a Nice Curry Gravy... The Small Bites Was Good When Uuu Piece It All Together... Chicken Karaage Was Crispy and Decently Flavored... Mentalko Spaghetti Surprised Me and IF I Returned That I Would Order Instead... Pretty Good Selection Of Sake... The Lighting Was Dimly Bright and Calming... Again Its Tight In There and Hopefully Uuu Dont Get the WOrst Seat in the House in the Middle of the Floor Open to the Front Door...
Beautiful interior with equally good food! Got the mentaiko spaghetti, katsu curry, and karaage! The best was definitely the spaghetti. Katsu curry was good but similar to other ones I’ve had in SF. Also got the tart as dessert which was not too sweet (Asian compliment!) but overpriced ($12.50 for a little slice). Otherwise, loved the vibe and food!
Such a cute restaurant in the neighborhood. We came in the earlier side and didn't have to wait to long. There is a clip board to add your name to the wait-list at the entry. Food: Original pot stickers to start. You can get vegetarian (mushroom) but we stuck with the pork. These were mediocre - flimsy, and not super flavorful. The yuzu sauce saved the dish. We also got the katsu curry and mentaiko spaghetti. The curry was good, and katsu was well fried - perfect for a cold night. The spaghetti was also delicious - buttery, salty and filling (definitely a carb bomb). Portions are really big. The service was efficient - it's a small joint so they're hustling. The service wasn't warm but I also didn't feel rushed. The place is a total neighborhood vibe and would come again.
Cute tiny place with great food! We got the champignon pasta, onigiri set, and gyudon. All delicious! Definitely getting the karaage from the onigiri and pasta again! Service is slow. Took about 15 min to get our order in. We had to get up to get checked out cause we were in rush and were already waiting for a while. One very sweet and lovely but overworked waitress for an always full restaurant.
very quaint and cozy atmosphere, gets crowded quickly with a waitlist to write your name on outside. we had got there right as they opened for brunch at 12, but told they could not make about half of the items on the menu. wait time for food was overall okay, appetizers and drinks came out quickly but took a bit for us to get our entrées. many tables had received their food far before ours even though we had ordered the exact same dishes as them. the katsu curry rice and karaage were average. the curry was well balanced, but i do wish they did something more with the sauce for the karaage as it wasn’t really adding anything extra. the mentaiko pasta was good, perfectly cooked and sauce was flavorful. the garnish of perilla/shiso leaves was perfect and added some freshness; i see why this is the most popular menu item. the drinks were also good, their royal milk tea isn’t too sweet although i do think it’s interesting to charge an extra dollar to have it as an iced drink instead of warm. their yuzu lemonade is nice and refreshing. overall the food is good, to me it’s nothing particularly new or anything that stands out from other japanese restaurants i’ve been to. however if i’m in the area again i would like to try their other menu items given that they’re available.
Service and atmosphere are great, I like the vibe of this small restaurant. The food quality was good as well, especially for the price. My favorite was the Japanese curry. The gyudon what is the most unique flavors, but the tuna bowl was solid as well and had a lot of rice to fill you up. Overall, great for a casual night out at a very reasonable price.
Honey, let me tell you about this little Japanese jewel box tucked away in the Mission! Bon Nene is serving FACE with their katsu curry - that chicken was breaded for the GODS, and the curry sauce? Thicker than my contour! The mentaiko pasta might not be revolutionary, but she's honest work, mama - topped with that seaweed confetti like she's ready for the ball! The ambiance is giving intimate dinner date realness - all warm woods, mood lighting, and those dramatic front windows serving storefront theater with the city lights behind you. Not every queen needs to be doing death drops and reveals - sometimes you just need that reliable sister who shows up, does her job, and makes you feel at home. The wait staff was sweet as pie, but next time I'm bringing my non-seafood eating judy, we're gonna need to get creative with that menu, okurrr? Still, for a quiet night out in the neighborhood when you don't want to march through the Valencia Street crowds, she's your girl! Four stars for being that dependable diva next door! *tongue pop*
Went there during the weekend. The environment is very homey and cozy. Unfortunately they don’t have the Hokkaido cheese cake that day 🥲 the food were nice and served fast. I would suggest sharing :) My only complaint is about the service. We were ignored many times when we were waiting outside to get seated (the server promised to seat us in 2 min but it was 10+ min). We were ignored more when we try to place the order and when we want the check to go. It seems like the staff training is lacking and the servers are very overwhelmed.
The food here is good but I feel like it isn’t incredible like a lot of the reviews say. They do have good portion and prices are reasonable especially for SF. The highlight for me was the katsu curry rice, which was quite good and filling.
Came here for lunch with a few friends. We made a reservation, so we were seated pretty promptly. The service was good and the menu was full of interesting stuff. Of the four things that we ordered the curry was so so I thought. Also the lettuce wrap was definitely interesting. I wish I had more lettuce and other veggies to finish the flavorful beef with. The carrots definitely made the dish prettier, but it didn't really go with the dish. It was simply too hard to be in the wrap. Overall, the menu is very creative and most of the food are very tasty, plus the service is great. Come give them a try, I think you will like it!
Beautiful little Japanese bistro. The food left a lot to be desired though. The takoyaki is really good. I have never had such crispy texture in takoyaki before, however they are really stingy with the octopus and left the takoyaki a very doughy interior. The beef don is not good. Very greasy. The rice is overcooked with too much water so it is already too soggy to start with. The beef itself also doesn’t taste like fresh meat more like frozen. Also the entire dish is not nutrition balanced. Overall I only have a few bite and wasted most of the dish. My friends like the curry with minced beef, but I heard another customer complained that it is too heavy.

The champignon pasta was excellent, however I was underwhelmed by the tuna maguro bowl - felt a bit overpriced for 4 pieces of tuna and a mountain of white rice. They were also out of the gyudon and multiple drinks unfortunately. Good overall but I wasn’t blown away
Food was really great and the staff were super friendly. Unfortunately the atmosphere was not relaxing. We were sat at a shared table and there just wasn’t any room between parties. The couple next to us was talking VERY loudly and we couldn’t concentrate on our thoughts which was very distracting. The restaurant was also playing this bad pop music as if we were in a department store. The experience just made us want to eat quickly and leave! It’s a shame since the food was great.

Conflicting dining experience when compared to reviews and photos posted. Firstly, their small menu led us to the impression that they focus on what they do best, cutting the choice dilemma out of the equation. This promising sign took a turn when the food arrived close to an hour after placing our order. Looking nothing like the dazzling photos I've seen featured by other review writers, I was disappointed not just by the presentation but also by the long wait. The garnish was chopped haphazardly, splashed on there with little care. The smear glob of wasabi was as if it was an afterthought. Stringy maguro over rice was certainly not a choice cut. Although crisp, the katsu was half sunken in the sauce, and the accompanying egg was overcooked. A sad, pathetic broccoli floret tucked next to the rice clump like it was ashamed to be in the bowl. The binding element of this dish was lackluster. It was reminiscent of store-bought S&B curry cubes. I cannot vouch for the taste of this curry. The gyoza was insipid without the vinaigrette dipping sauce. However, the crunch of the starch crisp encircling the dumplings was a nice touch. A far cry from a supposedly proud Japanese establishment. The attention to detail and craft did not come through. The hour wait was not worth my valuable time. It saddens me that my experience did not live up to the claims of others who have dinned here. The food was baseline average and not a sensational five stars any means. Being seated outdoors made getting attention from the waiting staff a struggle. At this rate, I refuse to jump to conclusions about a restaurant's lauding claims without digging deeper into contrasting opinions. Reviews like that frustrate me in that they don't serve much purpose outside of getting likes and views My hard-earned money deserves the respect I put into earning it, and so should yours. Overall, an okay attempt but not enough to bring me back.
Second visit. The spaghetti and sake 5 star. Seaweed salad ok. Tuna dish good. place is small, no reservations. Atmosphere is okay but abit crowded.
Visited Bon, Nene based on the buzz surrounding this Japanese spot, but left feeling underwhelmed. We ordered the Takoyaki, Maguro Bowl, and Katsucurry Rice. The atmosphere is casual with one community table setup in a compact space, which creates somewhat a cozy but cramped feeling. Service was adequate, though food delivery was notably slow. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what all the hype is about. None of our three dishes felt particularly special in terms of taste, presentation, or value. The takoyaki was quite light - while they use a different sauce than most places, it didn't elevate the dish enough to make it memorable. The Katsucurry Rice tasted like something you could easily make at home with a Golden Curry box from the grocery store. The Maguro Bowl came with a disappointingly small portion for the price point. While the food wasn't bad, nothing stood out as exceptional or worth the wait. I haven't tried their pasta dish, but based on this experience, I probably won't be returning anytime soon. There are likely better Japanese options in the area for similar or better value.

Mmmm, I was not impressed at all. We read so many great reviews. We wanted to try despites the long line, which is something I usually don't like to do. In any case, we got our tiny table, we ordered different dishes. They were not that good at all. They were all sort of muddled up. A lot of different flavors that did not go well together, all mixed up in a not really clear way. So, after that experience, I don't see any reason to go back or wait in line for 30-45 minutes.
