This is the place to eat meat if you like real meat
Grace runs the most friendly and efficient establishment. The food is always delicious. Served exactly how you've requested. The service is always thoughtful and kind. This is one of my favorite restaurants in West Portal.
The specific reason I go here is to get a bison burger and they never disappoint. The burger is prepared how you like it and the toppings are always fresh. When you walk in immediately you can see the grill guys making the food, the ultimate in transparency. The staff is always on the move, yet always pleasant in demeanor, and they acknowledge your existence as soon as you walk in the door. I usually call it in and pick it up, as I only live 7 minutes away and the food is usually ready in 10 or 20 minutes, as they will tell you when you order. Although I have yet to eat in, I've noticed the medium size, well lit, dining room. The diners look happy and satisfied. I could definitely eat-in if only I had some friends (I'm working on it!). Getting back to the food ..they offer a variety of beef and bison burgers in 1/2lb or 1/3lb, American cheddar, Swiss, and Blu Cheese available and fries come with the burger, but you can substitute sweet potato fries or salad for healthier options. In a nutshell, delicious juicy burger, attentive staff, warm and friendly atmosphere, and no waiting beyond what is expected, even when they are busy.
A classic! Visited today with my wife and child. Welcoming and accommodating. Perfectly cooked and seasoned burgers. Fresh salad toppings. Efficient friendly service. No frills, and all the better for it. A first time visit for us, but not the last. Recommended.
What a gem!!!! I had the ribeye medium rare, and my friend had the buffalo NY steak and a burgundy carafe. It was delicious, cooked to perfection, and the salad bar was on point!! Get the burgundy carafe with your steak, you won't be disappointed. The best deal in steak is made with love, and it feels like home here, your welcomed like family. Sports on tv come on thru!
This place has been one of my "comfort spots" in SF for well over a decade. If you want a truly exceptional burger, look no further. I hear they have other offerings too, but I've not strayed from my favorites.
They are a great, reasonably priced steakhouse. We want for a late lunch for my birthday and it was lovely. My little old people loved that it was not crazy loud. One tried the Better than Beef Burger - (which was the same price as regular burgers - not the jacked up pricing I have seen at other restaurants) - and it was surprisingly good. And I got a root beer float for dessert. They have traditional desserts but it's my birthday so I get what I want. The staff was friendly, helpful and all around awesome. Loved that we didn't have to wait, 'cuz birthday.
Always right. I've been eating there for many years and have never been disappointed. Great fresh beef cooked to your request. I like well done, but it's juicy and tender. Bacon is crisp and bread does not fall apart. Cost about $30.00 for 2 pp. Good service .
This place is so under appreciated . The burgers are stellar as always . The service is Courteous but not extraordinary as expected for a neighborhood place . Whats really incredible is their superior quality in meat . For a neighborhood place their steak is excellent ... I would even say boarding on destination . I won’t get ahead of myself but it is a good dinner . As mentioned , under appreciated . I would even take an out of town friend foe a burger or a last minute rib eye , especially if I’m in jeans and a T .
Excellent burgers! I had the Bison burger with blue & mozzarella cheese cooked medium & perfect, their fries are hand cut as well. The burgers also come in Turkey & beef 1/3rd and 1/2 pound sizes. Good salad bar , steaks, chicken, beer on tap & steps away from West Portal Muni station. Friendly staff and prompt service!
Great lil hide away spot..! Very low key . but high taste value! Been here 2× and food had been amazing! Perfectly cooked steak and super fresh salad. Prices are reasonable with other eateries in the city.. If you have a chance to go here give it a shot.... Park up the street and walk down for a stress free start..
A great steak. And salad bar. Curly fries are so good.
This is the place you want to go if you want to taste really fresh meat. There are no fancy sauces, but they grind the meat fresh throughout the day, and it tastes so light.
Classic old school family owned joint. Friendly service. Delicious bison burger. Great steak. I came 5 minutes past closing once, and they fired the grill back up to accommodate me. This is the kind of place that form the backbone of San Francisco
My first time reviewing Bullshead Restaurant but not my first time eating at this homley (British definition) environment. Upon entering you are up close and personal with the raw meat display. Behind the glassed meat display is the busy grill and grill master. If you enjoy a great smokey tasting burger then you are in for a yummy treat. The fries are exceptionally good simply because they are crunchy and medium well. The ambiance is old school and filed with sports memorabilia. I appreciate the customer service because I am chatty and they--are chatty. The salad bar is 5 stars as is the rest of the food offerings. Today I indulged in a Chocolate/Hazelnut cake and I also give it 5 stars.
I told him.."But first, I'm stopping at the Bullshead Restaurant for one of those world famous Turkey burgers" Then the little Weasel says ...Well..why can't we just do the trade there, that way I can have a Turkey burger too. NO! I tell him, we'll do the exchange at the halfway point being Stonestown as planned, out there in the parking lot where no one can see the big boar Warthogs going from my truck to yours! Boy I'll tell you..The outskirts of Campbell is in for a big surprise when those Warthogs dig under Killklunker's fence and start terrorizing the town, but the bigger surprise was that Awesome Turkey and Jack burger with grilled onions, it was Spectacularly Amazing! ☆☆☆☆☆
Both Indoor and outdoor dining were available 3/16/2021. There were six indoor tables and three outdoor tables at their parklet. You know, I count all my blessings every time I try a new place and it turns out alright. Nowadays, some places aren't even open for indoor/outdoor dining. And those that are open, they might serve their food in a to go container. Bullshead restaurant didn't do that. It is a treat to get my meal on a plate. I had their breakfast burger (bacon, egg, cheese and hash browns) $14.50 1/3 lb. + $1 extra for garlic fries. The burger was awesome but the garlic fries were only meh. Regardless, the chef came to my table while cooking my burger and asked if I wanted ketches/mayo/mustard. I thought that was cool he tried to get my order right. Great job everyone at Bullshead Restaurant. My bill came out to be $27 with tax and tip for a nice burger and a beer.
Great neighborhood place for steak. Simple and unpretentious. Good steaks and burgers, with a salad bar. Folks here are super friendly too. Loyal local following and I can fully understand why!
Love this place. They havent disappointed us with their selection of burgers. Bought my husband here, and he had the Bison burger. So juicy but didnt taste different than a beef burger.
Where can you get a great sandwich with fries these days for under $10 bucks? Well, Bullshead shows how it can be done!! We both ordered the Reuben and it was superb! We also ordered sweet potato fries for an extra $1.50 and that was great. The coleslaw was only so-so perhaps because they didn’t want to use much sugar. The Reuben was perfect with great meat and filled with Swiss cheese. This is such a bargain for a wonderful lunch!!!
Wanted to pick up some steak for mothers day and found this restaurant to be relatively affordable (especially since we wanted to eat at home rather than eat out). This place had a lot of reviews for their burgers compared to their other dinner entrees, but overall very positive. We ordered the ribeye, full rack of ribs, and filet mignon. They have a lot of options for sides, we opted for 2 baked potatoes and 1 onion rings. It also came with soup or salad. We got 2 chicken noodle soups and 1 salad. They told us we would be given a box for the salad bar. Since it was a big order and a special day, I expected a longer wait time. When we arrived, the kitchen is right in front welcoming everyone with enticing aromas. The salad bar is towards the back and I was surprised by the variety of items they had. The potato and pasta salad tasted homemade and fresh. The box they gave was also quite large. If you dine in, it’s unlimited. They were also very kind and quick in restocking if they noticed something was low. We only waited a few minutes while they were finishing up our food. We noticed they had a lot of take out orders. We went home and began to eat. The meat was cooked perfectly medium. The ribs were tender and falling off the bone. They were very generous with their portions. Everything tasted delicious and we were so so impressed by this restaurant. Definitely a local favorite and I cant wait to come back and try their burgers!!
We had an amazing meal here! Brandon was the best waiter. He was very attentive and recommended the rib eye which was mouthwatering! Hubby had a bacon cheeseburger!
This place is always a solid go to. I love the old school vibe, and the burgers are always consistently good. One of the few places that serve bison burgers and do it well.
Winner! Winner! Burger dinners! Third pound burger cheddar cheese burger and fries Third pound burger and onions rings Fresh! Great burgers! Great service!

Moved into the neighborhood a few months back and finally had the opportunity to experience what I had only heard about. Super comfy California environment, clean. Great burgers, steaks, fries all top notch in flavor and tenderness. We tried the Reuben burger and highly recommend! Thanks and we will be back! And clean bathroom!
Great burgers. Not cheap at all, but the price is reflected in the food’s quality. Good meat (bison, beef, turkey) and a lot of customization. It seems to be a rare place that nails the basics in a way you tend to only get in older restaurants, but also offers more novel options for people who want something new.
Hands down, the BEST burger in San Francisco. Or maybe even anywhere in the world. It is the best tasting, minus the grease that you get at other local favorites. French fries are great too, but I always get a side of coleslaw to try to stay on the healthy side. Makes for a great lunch. Grace always makes me feel at home. Thanks for years of yummy food!

Rustic burger joint that also offers steaks. The meat in the entry display looked good, but I'm also hesitant to buy a $40 steak and get disappointed, so I opted for the bison burger. The bison meat had a bit of a gamey taste to it but it was not bad. $20 for a 1/2 pound bison burger with fries is a bit steep but we are in SF after all. The fries that came with the burger were a bit chewy for my taste. My mom had a 1/3 pound beef burger and liked it. She said the beef was very flavorful. The coleslaw with the burger was on the sweet side, more apple taste than mayonnaise or spices. So if you don't like the lighter, sweeter type coleslaw, go for a different side. The salad bar did not look very inviting/appetizing, so I passed on that for an extra $7. Overall not bad, but not a place to go back to, especially because of a very extremely annoying humming noise that came on every few seconds and lasted for about 30-45 seconds. Two burgers, one iced tea and a water, $45 + tip....
A low-key steak&burger spot with great atmosphere and attentive waiters. I got a medium done regular burger and it was good, but a little lacking flavor. Will definitely try again.
So it opened in 1979.. and it looks it but the food is fantastic!! They do a great Burger.
My partner and I are regulars for burgers. The last 2 times they have been under cooked to the point that we termed and ordered them medium well and medium (instead of the preferred medium and medium rare) and they still came out and the rare side. The server was kind enough to comp one, and I hope the cook got the feedback. Not sure what has changed here - it’s just a matter of timing for the correct doneness.
I had a decent lunch here, the Buffalo Burger was good, and the Corned Beef on top was fine as well. I think they were probably both under seasoned though, as I like some pepper, especially on my Corned Beef. The Fries were super good though, both the curly and the garlic were excellent. The staff were friendly and the price was a little high, but not that high for what I think was quality materials in the city. I'd swing back by if in the area.

The place looks very outdated, it's kind of dark in there. The lobby is a little small. Food didn't have a whole lot of flavor, the steak wasn't seasoned the French fries didn't have no flavor, the vegetables were OK. the service was okay. I wouldn't recommend, cause we spent a little over $100, for 2 plates and 2 drinks. Unless they will lower the prices or bring the food up the par.
This is a family restaurant and nice and quiet which is a rarity these days. Lots of room for larger parties. Burger was fine, nothing special compared to all the new burger options out there but certainly adequate especially considering the location in west Portal. Probably should have got the coleslaw. This is a reasonably priced steakhouse and the steaks looked great as you can view them when you go in.
The management of this restaurant has been bought from previous owner's, unfortunately its not nearly as good. Very disappointing, my grilled salmon was way over cooked & dry. My husband's burger was delicious though, We sure miss the previous Chef & the mushroom soup they use to serve. Gone are the good ole day's 😌 the minestrone soup was delicious
Low key steakhouse vibes. Staff was very helpful and friendly, unfortunately the New York steaks (one sandwich) were a little tough. Medium and medium rare... would go back and try the burger!
Tasty, salty, rustic, gluten. Sensitive types avoid. They're very sweet but they just don't have a clue about keeping gluten off of a plate. I ordered and requested no gluten. There were two fries still on my plate and crumbs from somebody else's bun. Bring your gluten enzyme pills with you. It's tasty but risky. Really nice. Service, ultra casual, not fancy. Okay for a single person or a group. Take out as well. No parking. For delicate elderly's please walk them to the door and get them inside. Nobody gave my 90-year-old elderly a seat while I went to park the car. 😭 I came in to find my sweet little elderly standing. That gets hard when they're at that age. Otherwise it was a joyful meal and as I said, very tasty and high quality meats. It's a traditional neighborhood favorite. It's next to the train station so L, M, K Muni lines are there. Also, buses. Locals should walk and you can park on the outer neighborhoods for free.
We tried their vegan hamburger, it was fresh and yummy. I wont give 5 star because they could be more clean on the refrigerator, which keep meat, by the entrance door. Also the seating area is so dark(black) with minimum daylight and fresh air, definitely not a place you wan to stay for a long time.

i've heard they had great burgers but it was pretty bland. i've had bison meat before and typically it tastes like a very strong beef flavor. the burger i had was very mild in flavor

My burger was overcooked. I didn't want the unpleasantness of requesting another, because I was treating a friend for his birthday, so I ate the medium rare center and left the rest. The waiter was appallingly bad. bad. bad. bad. Completely unprofessional in appearance, dress and attitude. We waited so long to order that I went to the counter to ask if I should order there. Did he not like us because of the way we were dressed? did he treat us with disrespect because one of us has brown skin? At one point the server approached our table with a beverage in one hand, and sipped his drink through a straw before asking us what we needed this time. What a ridiculous excuse for a server. Did I mention he was bad?
