Opinions de Kokkari Estiatorio San Francisco
I was planning to try this SF staple for a while and was not disappointed. Beautiful lively restaurant, amazing food and great service. It wasn’t easy to book a table for my birthday dinner (even though it was Monday evening and I was booking in 4 weeks before). The spot we got was in an alcove which was perfect for us with a very active toddler. We ordered the baked feta as an appetizer, the Moussaka and chicken souvlas , which we shared and really enjoyed. The entrees was very generous and we unfortunately didn’t have a room for the dessert (I was actually really interested in trying their baklava). Definitely a great place for a date or celebration.
Great interior design, many details that keep you engaged with the space as you enjoy the food. Food was exceptional. Reasonably priced for the quality they offer. Huge tables that can accommodate big groups.
A must try if you’re in SF. Perfect for a romantic date night or to catch up with friends. For starters we ordered the octopus appetizer and dip trio. For mains we got the whole fish and rack of lamb. Dessert we had the baklava and Greek coffee. Everything was amazing and can’t wait for my next time back.
Kokkari now lives in my dreams. One of the best places I’ve been in San Francisco. Everything from the atmosphere to the service is 10/10. The food is obviously the star—have not had such authentic Greek food since being in Greece. The pita is being talked about every day in our house and so is the baklava. The zucchini cakes are also living rent free in my head and the citrus salad with the dates?! So good. Kokkari is a must try in SF. Can’t wait to come back as soon as possible.
Kokkari Estiatorio has been a favorite of mine for over 20 years, and they never disappoint—whether it’s lunch, dinner, or a private event. This visit was for a private holiday luncheon, and everything was wonderful from start to finish. My go-to lunch favorites are the branzino and the lamb, both consistently excellent. Kokkari continues to deliver an exceptional experience every time. This place is in my top three SF restaurant recommendations.
Kokkari has been my go to restaurant for special celebrations due to its delicious food and wonderful atmosphere. But what really stands out is the service you receive when dining here. Michele is the most hospitable, warm and kind manager. He always makes me and my group feel right at home and special. Every time we dine here, we leave talking about how wonderful of an experience it was. Thank you Michele for treating us like family and making such a lasting impression on every single friend I have ever dined with at Kokkari!
Delicious meal. The octopus was one of the best I’ve had, and everything else was delicious as well but I will definitely remember the donuts for dessert. They were definitely a massive standout and entered my dessert hall of fame. When you bite into them they are gooey like they are filled with some kind of warm cinnamon butter. Huge fan and will be back.
Beautiful restaurant, amazing food and fantastic service. This is a must for any visit to SF. I ordered the grilled octopus as an appetizer and the lamb chops, which were both stellar. My man ordered their saghanaki and chicken souvlaki, which he thoroughly enjoyed. He noted that both dishes were reminiscent of what he had in Greece, though of course Greece was a couple notches higher. Overall, do make your way to experience Kokkari.
I saw other reviews recommending the appetizer lamb chops over the entrée version, and I did enjoy the appetizer one, they’re delicious, with a wonderfully crispy surface. The octopus dish is very tender, and both the whole fish and the zucchini cake are perfectly crisp on the outside. Overall, great textures and flavors!
Kokkari Estiatorio – A Taste of Greece in San Francisco I had a wonderful lunch at Kokkari Estiatorio, and it easily lived up to its stellar reputation. The ambiance strikes that perfect balance between elegant and inviting — rustic Mediterranean charm with a touch of modern sophistication. The Greek salad was an absolute standout — fresh, vibrant, and beautifully balanced. Every bite tasted like it had just come from a garden, with crisp cucumbers, juicy tomatoes, and creamy feta that tied it all together. For the main course, I ordered the lamb, and it was exceptional. Tender, perfectly seasoned, and full of rich, savory flavor — truly one of the best lamb dishes I’ve had in the city. To finish, the Greek yogurt with honey made for a perfect dessert — light, creamy, and just sweet enough. It’s a generous portion, so I’d recommend sharing it (if you’re willing to part with a few bites!). Overall, Kokkari Estiatorio delivers a meal that feels both comforting and refined — a must-visit for anyone craving authentic Greek cuisine with a California touch. Highly recommended! 🇬🇷
Kokkari Estiatorio is truly exceptional! We started with the Kolokithokeftethes (zucchini cakes) and Horiatiki salad, both fresh and full of flavor. For mains, the Makaronia (roasted squash pasta with brown butter, sage & hazelnuts) was indulgent and perfectly balanced, while the Lavraki (whole grilled sea bass) was light, flaky, and beautifully prepared. Dessert was a highlight — Judy’s Special Sundae with hot fudge, whipped cream & toasted hazelnuts was both nostalgic and elevated. Their mocktails are also amazing — refreshing and crafted with care. We also loved that they happily made a special pasta for kids on request — such thoughtful service! Warm ambiance, attentive staff, and outstanding food make Kokkari a must-visit in San Francisco.
Warm ambiance with friendly, attentive staff. Low noise level and spread out tables makes it easy to have deep conversations. The octopus was perfectly cooked, with a crisp exterior and tender interior. The flavours of other dishes were complex (lamb riblets, watermelon and feta salad) and tasty. Recommended for a date night.
We went with a group of friends and tried several dishes from the menu. First of all, we were served a huge basket of freshly baked sourdough bread with amazing olive oil, such a great start! We ordered a variety of plates to share, and everything was delicious and generous in portion. Highlights for us were the octopus and the massive branzino, both outstanding. The service was excellent from beginning to end. A solid 10/10. We’ll definitely be coming back! :)
A long time SF fav. Excellent food and service, beautiful restaurant. Definitely make reservations- though sometimes you can get lucky with a walk in, worth a try!

We had a reservation on Sunday. It was nice that they had the exact table ready for us - they were just opening back up at 5pm. The waitress was attentive, as were all the other servers - this is very important to me when we're spending good money at a restaurant. They do have a policy in small print at the bottom of their wine menu that they require a 6% surcharge on all bills "in support of SF Employer Ordinances such as Healthy SF", so I knew that would cost extra. We spent $400 for 2 of us, with taxes and tip. We had 3 appetizers: Saghanaki - fried cheese. It was nice and light but flavorful. Kalamari (calamari) - not fried - cooked perfectly, cut like a soft steak. I love when octopus is cooked this way. Lamb tongue - a special not on the menu. It was good, I like anything weird or different. Not super-exciting, but good. We had 2 entrees: Katsikaki Yiouvetsi - mild flavor, but still very good. Rotisserie duck - not on the menu. Very flavorful and cooked very well. We had 3 glasses of red wine ($19-20 each) that were very good. And 2 Moscow mules, also good. My dessert was the best thing I had. I couldn't stop saying "wow" as I was eating it. I didn't want my partner to have any! Lol. It was ice cream with these stuffed pastries - amazing! And his was really good too - ice cream with great stuff inside. I'm sorry, I forgot to make note of the names. You can see the pics below. Thanks for a beautiful meal - we will be back!
GET THE PITA it’s thick and chewy and buttery! Cozy upscale dining. We sat at the bar. Bar seat is better than table seat. Better lighting and you can sit closer together. Waiter said bar seats you can get by calling to reserve two days in advance. Table seats you can get by calling two weeks in advance. Unless you’re a party of one - we had a person walk in and sit next to us Fried cheese - waiter drizzled lemon juice and it sizzled nicely. But it cooled too quickly and became boring to eat Babaganoush - good but not the best in the city. I liked the pickled veggies that came with it though Tzin spritz - ok, too much volume. I liked eating the berries. Waiter called them British boba 😂 Hibiscus mocktail - tart and delicious! Squash - forgettable, did not taste the pistachio butter Octopus - ok, did not come with tail Chicken - yummy and enough to feed two people We over ordered and could not finish the chicken. The waiter packed the chicken for us Food not worth the $200 total, you are paying for the ambience. Nice place to dress up for. Would be nice to just get drinks here also. There’s a fireplace with real fire and the overall volume is not too loud, you don’t have to strain to hear.
I last remembered eating at Kokkari before the pandemic. This time around was for a work dinner, and it felt like nothing had changed. The interior and the food make up the same consistent experience. They sat us at the table in front of the fireplace, which gave it a cozy feel. The lounge chairs, though comfy, are a tight fit and make it a little hard to get in and out though. $12.75 Melitzanosalata, Taramosalata, Tzatziki, Favosalata, Skordalia, Tirokafteri: good! a mixed plate of fresh dips with pita is always a good idea $14.75 Kolokithokeftethes - crispy zucchini cakes with cucumber & mint-yogurt dressing: good! crispy with the sweet zucchini flavor $19.25 Saganaki - pan fried Kefalotyri cheese with lemon & oregano: good! what's not to like about fried cheese? $20.75 Roasted Prawns - chili-garlic roasted wild gulf prawns: great! very flavorful large prawns $20.75 Octapodaki tou Yiorgou - grilled octopus with lemon, oregano, olive oil: good! octopus is always delicious, but a tad too salty, could be a little more tender $35 Moussaka - traditional baked casserole of spiced lamb & beef, eggplant, potato & yogurt bechamel: okay! a creamy layered baked potato dish $45.50 Ippoglossa - Pacific halibut filet pan roasted with fava puree, garlic & chili broccoli rabe & olive tapenade: okay! could be a little more tender $69 Arnisia Paidakia - grilled lamb chops with lemon-oregano vinaigrette & Kokkari potatoes: great! beautiful lamb chops, though the best part is the vinaigrette $13.50 Galaktoboureko - semolina custard in filo with pistachio ice cream good! delicious balance of crunchy filo and creamy insides $13.75 Kataifi Ekmek - shredded filo with semolina custard, creme fraiche & pistachio good! beautiful layered cake on a crunchy kataifi crust $11.50 Loukoumades - traditional Greek doughnuts with honey, cinnamon & walnuts: okay! can't complain about sugary doughnuts It was great to try a lot of the menu in a large group, but I think if I were to come back, I might only really be interested in the lamb chops and maybe an appetizer. Too bad it's one of the most expensive things on the menu.
Recommended to us by a local, Kokkari’s provided an enjoyable dining experience on our last evening in San Francisco. The interior was spacious and ornate, with high ceilings and natural wood accents. Employees were gracious and attentive—we were greeted by a smartly-dressed host who showed us to our table and returned later to check in during our meal. Our waitress was friendly and very helpful in pointing out which dishes would be best given my wife’s gluten intolerance and my pescatarian/plant-based diet. We started with the Dolmathes, tender grape leaves bursting with a lemony whole grain rice. Following that, we had the grilled octopus—delectable bite-sized portions of tentacles marinated in lemon and olive oil. These would have been flawless had it not been for an excessive amount of fat. The handful of times I’ve had it before in other restaurants, octopus has always been lean and meaty. We followed that with bowls of Fakes, a tangy lentil soup in what seemed to be a tomato base. This was my favorite dish—the lentils were firm, the soup was piping hot, and it was an original take on lentil preparation. For a main course, we got both versions—one baked, one grilled—of the Sea Bass, which we split. Each one was tasty (although the grilled version was a little salty) and served as a whole fish but de-boned. The portions of potatoes, tomatoes, and Swiss chard that accompanied the fish tasted fresh and were tastefully seasoned. We finished with the sorbet and the flourless chocolate tort, both of which were delicious. Kokkari’s is a great place for a special dinner.
This place is elevated, I feel like I wasn’t dressed appropriately. But even so the staff was great, very professional and friendly. Exceptional wine menu. We got a mix appetizer and moussaka. I liked the app, the moussaka was pretty heavy and a bit one note for me. I generally enjoy a more casual place.

First and most important. The Host was not welcoming and had a stern demeanor. Secondly the atmosphere was very noisy. Third the food which is very crucial lacked high standards for being a San Francisco gourmet restaurant. The flavor of the food and texture was off. I ordered the ravioli plate it was drowned in a highly salty sauce and the ravioli was not al dente it was raw, it needed more time. Also the tiny pieces of sweet potatoe and zucchini in it were over cooked. My husband ordered the lamb chops plate, it came with 2 chops and 3 russet potatoe wedges the lamb chops were bland with no seasoning and a lemon, the potatoes were fried and dry from the inside. It was disappointing to spend $160.00 dollars on the type of service and food. It did not meet my standards regarding customer service, food presentation, flavor, texture and quality.
