We’ve been bringing our pup to Mudpuppy’s for about a year now. He’s a Sheltie with tons of fur, and they always do a fantastic job cleaning and trimming him while maintaining the classic Sheltie look! Always very happy with their service and exceptionally-friendly staff!

Mudpuppy's offers a full range of services all rendered professionally and beautifully. What I really appreciate is their staff. Over the years there have been many times when I needed full service on my pups at the last minute and they have always accommodated. I really like that!

This place is awesome, from the manager Calvin to the groomers. I’ve been taking my 2 dogs with different grooming needs - a Coton de Tulear and Mini Schnauzer there for the past few years and these guys do the best job and both puppies come back happy and looking great!

We came to San Francisco for the day and decided to get our dog groomed. We had called earlier that week and they were able to get us in right when we needed to. They were phenomenally gentle with our dog and she looks unbelievably beautiful. I cannot recommend enough.

Our current go-to groomers in the city! We love everyone at the Castro location (though it's the only location we've been to!) & we have been loyal customers for years. Everyone is always super friendly & sweet to our dog. We love this place for their grooming services and our favorite groomer is Suzy/Suzanne - she always does an amazing job with our Westie. This place is also great if your dog just needs a quick bath and they make it easy to make appointments online. Definitely give them a try!

Such a great staff here! My dog Boomer has a bit of anxiety especially around other dogs and people and wants to be friends with everyone! The staff was awesome and worked on him super quick. Even getting his nails went by in a breeze! Def recommend them! Also while you wait for your pup you can walk around the beauty of Castro, get some food, a snack coffee or whatever you can find in the Castro 🥳.

We adopted a 11 year old husky from the SPCA and he had obviously been neglected by his previous owner and the SPCA doesn't do dog grooming. He came to us as a wonderful, but incredibly smelly ball of fluff. It honestly was an extremely stressful for me to deal with, the dog was very much bonding with me but I could not get over his smell and I could tell he was uncomfortable with his ears, anal glands, and toe nails. Huskys can be stubborn to say the least, but the groomer did a great job with him and he came out the other side a fluffier ball of fluff that smelled like a pet, not livestock. Thank you for the incredible work and helping us change the home dynamics with our new family member.

Walk-in nail clipping took 5 minutes, at most. They were so gentle with my dog and let me cuddle his head to keep him happy during the process. Will be coming back again! I think my dog was convinced after the treats.

Absolutely love mudpuppies. Took my 1-year-old pitbull there. He came out smelling like a rose. EVERY animal groomer has the hardest time doing his nails so they don't do them. When I got there his nails were perfectly trimmed and he seemed happy about it. The staff were amazing. The best part is they put your doggy in the window so other people can go by and see them The pups seem to enjoy it. Looking out on the people enjoying an evening stroll on the Castrol. My pup’s first grooming went off without a hitch and was surprisingly affordable. Her breath also smells SO MUCH better after they brushed her teeth.

I've gotten my Airdale groomed here twice and they've always done a wonderful job! Easy, clear communication and the cut always looks great.

We were so happy with our experience at Mudpuppy's. They did an excellent job with our double coated dog and were able to remove a ton of excess undercoat. They also were able to give her a trim and all of this took only an hour and a half! We will definitely be returning.

A cute little shop located on Castro Street with pretty efficient service. It’s conveniently located within about a block from the Castro Muni and right across the street from a host of public transportation buses.

Their staff are great with our little Chinese Crested but the haircut was very off. Our dog was returned without his face properly groomed (which we were warned of) and what looks like a buffalo hump on his back. His shoulders and half of his torso were left untouched. I don’t think their staff is familiar with how to groom particular breeds of dogs; we will therefore be taking our dog elsewhere to finish the job. For a place that requires booking several weeks in advance, we expected better. I will not be returning.

I was so excited to finally secure an appointment for my puppy at this location (waited two weeks) . I was referred by a good friends and had heard great things. The day of my appointment they canceled on me 10 min prior to my appointment, I was literally almost there . There wasn’t much remorse , was told by the employee they would reschedule me once they got into the business. He didn’t reach out to me until the next day to offer me an appointment in another 2 weeks , no discount offered, no free wash , no earlier prioritized appointment. If im agreeing to pay over $100 for a grooming service I think it’s more than reasonable for my time to be respected as well . A 10 min last cancellation when I’m coming from South San Francisco in a Uber nonetheless is just a bit ridiculous. Considering all the rave and good reviews I’d expect a little more remorse for a customers lost time and ultimately money ….

Karen C has good grooming skills, but sadly, she doesn't try to make any connection with my dog. Anyone who takes their dog for grooming knows how important that is to build trust with the groomer. The first time she groomed my dog, I thought she was just really in a hurry because of a packed schedule, but I could tell my dog was scared and wanted to get out of there. Fortunately, Hannah C who gave my dog a bath did her best to connect with my dog to make him less anxious, The second time I booked Karen C to groom him, she was again in a hurry, and didn't do what we agreed on (left about 2" of hair when we agreed on 1" and cut my dog's lashes, when I nicely asked her not too and she agreed). My dog has been groomed many times before and has always been fine when I'd leave him. For some reason, he was just afraid at Mudpuppy's. Since then, I've gone to a different groomer.

We’ve taken our dog here 3 times. 2 of those times she has received a truly shocking haircut. $150 for a complete shave (entirely unnecessary, not at all what we asked for) and for her to come out looking like Dobby is really disappointing. I would NOT take your dog here. :(

I hope this was a one-time experience from an unprofessional and rude employee, but I will not be returning to this place after my first grooming appointment with my puppy. I signed up for the $65, first-time grooming service, for my Malamute. I made sure to address his breed on signing up and that he was a Wooly breed and would only need a wash, nail trim, and paw hair trimming. On arriving, everything was great. Juliet was knowledgeable of the breed and what I wanted. We agreed on the price, what was going to be done, and I was told to come back 90 minutes later to pick him up. A new person was there to ring me up and tried to charge me $105 for the service. A 62% increase from what I had signed up for and what was agreed upon when I dropped him off. I was told the washer wouldn't be paid if I didn't pay the full amount and that Malamutes take more care so it should have been expected. I was floored. Why was I shamed for asking to pay what was agreed and made to feel small , like I should have known how much work it would take. I would have happily paid the $105, if we had agreed on it first, but that person made me feel small and bad for being surprised at such a markup. This place has great reviews and I'm sure most of the staff are as excellent as I first encountered, but I will not be returning here again after my experience. Make sure you agree upon the price first. Edit: The company reached out and I was given the original price, plus a small discount. They assured me the employee was talked to and prices would be more up front in the future. I appreciate their reaching out.

01/19/2022 My puppy had an appointment on this date and apparently I was given a call that exact same day where I did not receive any calls from them at all so I was really upset because they couldn’t take my puppy in and I took time off my job to take my puppy to get groomed. They wanted to re schedule my puppy within the next two weeks and I had made this appointment about 3 weeks in advance. I’m sorry that you guys have covid going or short on staff but be a little more responsible and calling us ahead of time and I hope you guys can fix this problem.

Be forwarded that if you are not on time, they cancel your appt and charge a fee. I was charged twice $75/twice with no grace periods. Haircuts are ok but nothing special if you have a doodle there so many other options.

I have been a customer for more than a year. Twice now I have been subject to one particular groomer, Vicky, who insists on shaving half of my standard poodle’s tail off despite me specifically asking her not to do so. I had to go with her for the second appointment because my appointment the other day was canceled, and I thought I could give her another chance. However that was a big mistake. She even said to me today that she prefers to shave almost all of the tail off and leave a pom, and I again told her specifically to only shave 1 inch above the base of the tail which is the traditional approach to grooming standard poodles. I am shocked that she thinks that she should dictate how my dog looks, and I’m disgusted by her arrogance and disrespect. Avoid her at all costs. Vicky does not care about the customer and has no business serving customers at a fine business like Mudpuppys.

We reserve Athens for a bath and removal of mats in our dogs Tail. I arrived early to get acquainted and confirm that i would like the mats addressed. The manager saw it and said it could be done. 1hr20min later, i go to pick him up, he is white and looks bathed. Didn’t bother to check if the mats were still there immediately because I assumed they were professional and performed the one thing i requested. Someone else rings me up, nothing about how the service went. Of course, I tapped on the tip option. As i walk out the door, my dog wags his tail, and I noticed ALL the mats still there. So i went back in addressing that the mats were all still there. The manager goes back in to ask Athens what happened, and the manager comes out saying we should probably just shave it and that everyone is just too busy. I did not think it was too much to ask to request an expensive bath just to get mats removed.. If not, I could have easily bathed my dog myself.. he is not a dog that needs extensive grooming. However, i essentially got nothing done, they did not communicate anything to me and clearly they didn’t communicate with each other either until i noticed. Did not even provide a solution. Extremely disappointed.

Brought our mini dachshund in for the first time for a basic bath and at the last minute added on a $15 nail trim. When we picked her up, they told us she peed inside the kennel — slightly unusual but we chalked it up to her being excited. Ten minutes later after getting home, after she started to walk around her paw started to bleed profusely, scaring us and leaving blood all over the house. Upon inspection it was from her nail being cut too close to the quick on her back paw. This clearly happened during the groom and it’s very disappointing that Mudpuppy staff didn’t mention that this happened. It’s irresponsible not to notify the owner if something happens during the grooming session and this would have been a simple thing to note with aftercare instructions.

Mudpuppy’s is a short walk from my apartment and should be a home run as a choice of groomer but after taking our dog there 4 times and not once receiving the hair cut we’ve asked for despite confirming over the phone, in person, and with pictures - I can no longer recommend this business. Each time I’m told that they’ll get it right the next time, each time I make sure to spend extra time when dropping him off to explain. The worst part is what we want is extremely simple - short all around. No fluffy tail, no beard, nothing extra and yet each groomer seems to decide to keep the beard, tail, or just do something weird (one time he had a bald spot they claimed was “something sticky in his fur” and other times random parts of the cut were just done poorly). I could deal with the high prices if they just did a consistently good job but they never have.

I visited this business to see if they could accommodate my small dogs needs and it appeared they could. I mentioned to them that my dog is a small breed and does not sit still for haircuts. they said they deal with this all the time. I was allowed to wait for my dog to be groomed. the bath went fine ,but they had difficulty handling the dog. The groomer traumatized my dog by ripping the comb through the few hair knots he had !! I told her to snip them off or pull them apart and they did not do that and the dog screamed in pain.Then the dog would not allow a comb near him for months?? They were not able to complete the cut and service. and I still had to pay full price for it. Then their story all changed and said things like it takes several visits at $70 ea to familiarize the dog before being able to complete a cut?? And other things they should have told me when i first inquired. I emailed the manager and he said one thing and when i sent the reply and he changed his mind and pretended like he never said or offered anything. I do not recommend this place at all.... Terrible experience and traumatized my dog.... dog owner beware!

We went to Mudpuppy’s for our golden doodle first haircut. When checking in I was informed that they would have to shave his body since he has a lot of mats - so I approved. When I came to pick him up, the groomer brought to my attention that many doodles have sensitive ears and shaving it may lead to blood accumulation in the tips. If this occurs within 24 hrs, we should go to a vet. 24 hrs later we visited the groomer with very little blood accumulated and they said it is fine and shall pass on its own. 2 days later we find ourselves at the vet with a lot of blood. The vet was shocked and shared with us that in 20 years in his line of work he saw this only twice and that groomers should never shave thin ears. Our dog ended up requiring stitches, a lot of meds, weekly visits at the vet and a month in a cone. If mudpuppy would have shared with us the risks before shaving his ears, we would have done things differently. We walked by them the other day and wanted to provide them feedback to ensure this doesn’t happen to others. Instead of having a proactive conversation, they accused that we were to blame and that’s it. I would never return nor recommend it unless you actually want to harm your dogs

Two big things: 1) dogs are kept in a 'waiting area' that is basically a display case. I saw multiple people stop and take photos of random client's dogs that were waiting to be groomed. How is this OK? 2) the cut we received was by far the worst grooming our pup has gotten in her entire lifetime, and entirely avoidable. We have no clue how this is going to grow back. Shockingly bad. Staff made excuses to try and shift blame; to me it's clear that the staff would rather take shortcuts to speed up a haircut than do right by their clients. I requested a refund and was denied. Edit: The response from the owner is simply indicative of the (low) professionalism and care this establishment has for pups and pup parents. Would strongly strongly recommend folks look elsewhere for their dog grooming needs. Edit 2: We think it's important that potential customers know just how bad this establishment is. Picture 1 is our beloved (not abused, not neglected) Airedale 1 week ago. Scruffy and in need of quality grooming? For sure. Abused / neglected? absolutely not. Picture 2 is what Mudpuppy did this morning. So...I'll let readers be the judge. We'll be looking for quality groomers in the city who respect their clients, don't accuse them of neglecting their loved ones on the internet, and take ownership for doing a bad job.

They told us he did great as usual, no one could tell us how this happened. The manager was kind and the owner paid for the vet bills, but sadly I can no longer recommend unless we find out what happened and what's been done to remedy it. Previous review: My dog had never been professionally groomed and has separation anxiety so I was super nervous dropping off. They were so nice even when I was being a helicopter pawrent and made me feel at ease. My dog was chilling in the window when I returned, smelled amazing, was silky smooth, and was not scared or worried. They did such a great job!

9/16 update to the review - I have found out that they have been charging my 45lbs doodle for a large dog grooming when she's a mid size dog. The haircut is OKAY at best and front of the house is really nice sometimes, or very unpleasant sometimes. Calvin the manager sometimes is nice and super customer focused but at times like today, did not care at all about the fact that my dog isnt a large dog and was not willing to work with me. My dog does not enjoy coming here - This "local business" gives the impression that they do not care about its customer or does not try to resolve the issues. I'd be willing to give it another try with a different groomer at their location. We love supporting local business and if we can come to a resolution like good neighbors do, I think we can all be happy. Correction - when you sign up for their service, you agree to all their prices upfront, I was unaware of the *fine print* in the agreement. I will happily update this review if we can test another groomer at their location. 8/5 update to the review below Groomer did a much better job at following our instructions, however the cut was not great. Elbows were not cut well and her head looked square. Over all much better job, but we need to try a different groomer at their location. 3/5 for this place - friendly staff! I’m taking off 2 stars because we did not get what we asked for. We specifically asked for the hair to not be cut so short and for some reason they basically shaved her... the groomer explained that it was because of knots in her hair. I specifically brought her to this groomer to get groomed and brushed out... not to have the lazy way out and just shave her down. I could have stuck with PetCo and pay half the price and get the same resolute.

I’ve been coming here for quite some time. This last appointment my dog needed to see another groomer while his was out of town (no problem)! He has severe food allergies and is not able to have random treats or things outside of his very regulated diet. I have communicated this many times and emphasized this 2-3 more times when I dropped him off knowing it was a new groomer. And also apologized because I thought I was being over the top but he really has such a sensitive stomach. I was reassured multiple times they knew and had it documented. When I came to pick him up, the receptionist said “he had so many treats today!” To which I immediately replied that I needed to know what he ate exactly and he isn’t able to have anything outside of what I provide for him. She said “well he loved them” I re-explained his allergy again and she said “he had some when the jar dropped but I’ll add a note to his file so it’s there for next time” There should already be a note; she said there was nothing documented. The days following he had a terrible upset stomach all weekend and was incredibly sick. I called and wrote in to let them know and no one even bothered calling back or replying. Just sharing here in case others have dogs with dietary needs or restrictions. I’m really disappointed as we’ve been coming here for awhile.
