These sandos are smacking!!! When I feel like a protein day, I would get the horse on the roof. Staff are very nice. Hot sauce isn’t spicy for me but taste good. Been coming here since day one and will continue to do so.
Had an awesome sausage, egg and cheese breakfast sandwich and it was seriously one of the best I’ve ever had!! Sooo delicious! Husband got the same but with bacon and said the same thing. We will definitely be visiting this place regularly!
Went to the shop do to close proximity to where I was staying for the week. The ham, egg, cheese breakfast sandwich was so delicious for being such a simple order. If I lived out here I would def grab a breakfast sandwich daily from here!!
Great pastrami sando, really enjoyed our lunch there. Hot sauce is fermented in house and is delicious. Next time, I'll need to bring quarters for pinball.
This place has, by far, the best breakfast sandwich in SF. The Classic BEC of the East Coast (Specifically Westchester, NY) is basically impossible to find in CA because it is missing the Kaiser Roll. Somehow, Newkirk’s has brought that to SF. This roll makes or breaks the sandwich because of the balance between fluffy texture, and the delicately this crunch of the crust. I’m not belittling the importance of an over-medium egg, crispy thin strips of bacon, or the melty American cheese. But, the roll makes it breaks this sandwich. Newkirk’s owner has somehow found or created the best Kaiser roll I have seen in CA. The result takes me back to my childhood in a blissful state of mind. When I bite into the BEC I’m suddenly transported back to being a 12 year old kid at my neighborhood corner store, with my pegged-bike leading against the building. Even if you have never had this sandwich as a kid, biting into this BEC will transport you, as great food does, to a place that no one can touch and you didn’t know exists.
the turkey sandwich with bacon is one of a kind. the texture of the bread is perfect. i got my whole family trying it and even my dad loves it now after he only tried it once like 2 weeks ago. AND i normally don't like to eat sandwiches!!!!
The absolute best sandwiches in SF. There is no debate. These guys make magic happen. The breakfast sandwiches hit the spot without being overly filling. The lunch sandwiches are creative, balanced, and soulful. The buns. The hot sauces. The pastrami.
I’ve been looking for a New York-style bacon, egg, and, cheese for years since moving to the Bay Area. I miss the hot, cheesy breakfast sandwiches on kaiser rolls that I grew up on. I FINALLY I FOUND IT. Newkirk’s is definitely my new go-to spot. The BEC was perfect, the ratio was on-point, the bacon was crispy, the roll was divine, and the cheese was melty and delicious. To top it all off, when I walked in this morning they were packing dozens of sandwiches for the local homeless. Good spot... will probably go back tomorrow.
First off, the kaiser bun they use for breakfast sandwiches is amazing. Second, literally ANY of the "Egg and Cheese" sandos are delicious and melty. Finally, I wish this place was open later and experimented with dinner type sandwiches like grilled cheese, Monte Cristo, etc..but I'm not mad they don't.
Didn’t even know about this place until recently; a coworker recommended them as having excellent sandwiches. Got the cheesesteak; best cheesesteak I’ve had in SF- perfect- will be returning. Also, I’m a nurse at SF general, and they’ve been delivering free food to us since this COVID crisis started. Please give them your support. Not only do they make excellent food, they are awesome people.
Their hot sauce was the best I have ever tasted sooooo amazing
So worth the wait…I’ve been trying to come by for quite some time but always seemed to hit this place up when they are closed (closed Sun-Mon current schedule) and wow it was worth the wait…while the roll doesn’t quite hit like a NY roll it is very soft fluffy and flavorful. We tried the mortadella and the Bronx pastrami sandwich with their jalapeño sauce on the side. Do not forget the sauce its excellent. Overall this place is a must try breakfast spot that is very quick and absolutely has top tier taste
One of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had, thanks team
I hope to god this place survives. Not many true East Coast delis here, and this one does it all right. Keep it up!!!
Sandwich. Unreal. It has meat. It has other stuff (like cheese). All of it is so good. Delish, some would say. I would say. If you’re thinking about whether or not to eat this stuff from this place… stop. Stop thinking. Start doing. Yes. I have a story to tell you. I was eating my delicious sandwich at the newkirks establishment (yum!) and the lady or girl at the counter said “is there something wrong with the left side of your body?” And I said what.? And she said “I don’t know did you sleep on the left side of your body?” And I said yes but also the right side too in equal amounts. And she said “okay well okay.” “I’m getting weird energy from the left side of your body and you should get that checked out.” I never figured that out but BUT the sandwich was really good.
Really good sandwiches although a bit pricey for the size. The hot sauce is great too. Nice place for lunch or breakfast. Would recommend
As a native New Yorker, Newkirks always makes me feel like I’m having a tiny piece of home. I love their sandwiches, and have so far had their Horse on the Roof and their Pastrami Egg and Cheese. Both were amazing and I’m excited to make this a regular spot. Don’t skimp on the hot sauce.
The sandwich I got was okay..I'm willing to try a different sandwich to decide if I'd return for a 3rd visit..
The sandwiches here are really flavorful and delicious. I haven't found a sandwich I haven't liked here. Plus their homemade hot sauce adds another level of deliciousness.
Cheesesteak is legit Not exactly philly which is ok, not a copy. Warm flaky bread high quality meat by default with some kind of fairly salty pepper. A little small compared to how cheesesteak used to be, a medium sized lunch not two lunches. Go!
Great breakfast sandwiches at a great price! Orange sauce is amazing! Looks like they added new items to their menu (e.g. Italian beef). I'll have to try them soon!
I will serve their breakfast sandwich at my wedding. I will have one in my hand when my first child is born. I am literally going to get two of them after I finish writing this message. And no, I'm not exaggerating. Everyone loves it here. I'm not even the first member of my family to give this place five stars on google. Look, I'm sure there are other delicious breakfast sandwiches in this city, I've even had a few of them myself. But once you have eaten the best, what is the point of eating anything else? What more could you want? To anyone out there still wondering if this place is any good, let me clear that up for you. God didn't destroy the Garden of Eden after Adam and Eve were expelled, he just renamed it Newkirk's.
Heard good things from inside the Zuck. Was recovering from a sickness and needed a nice pick me up. And boy was I glad I went here. Don’t get me wrong the doctors did a great job in patching me up but you have to believe me when I tell you these sandwiches will do more for you than any hospital can do. Delicious, fantastic, perfect. And did I mention the great price? Will most definitely be coming here again
I’m from NY. I’m always on the lookout for a good, simple classic BEC. If that’s what you’re after— go. Best I’ve had outside of NY. Bread is perfect. Staff is lovely.
I had just spent 3 days watching a family member slowly die in the ICU. I was subsisting on coffee and grief. My first sandwich at Nirkirks brought part of my soul back to life. Not only are the sandwiches just exceptionally delicious (personally my favorite cheese steak in the city), the woman working the counter is incredibly kind and lovely to customers coming from the hospital. The food is a revelation, and the woman's empathy was a bright light during the darkest time of my life. Thank you Newkirk's, thank you for everything.
Fantastic egg sandwiches, cheesesteaks, and pastrami. It’s pretty much an elevated version of East Coast bodega sandwiches, which is a really hard style to come by on the West Coast, and is something I no longer have to crave thanks to this place.
This place was amazing. Great egg sandwich with perfectly crispy bacon on a delicious Kaiser roll. I also loved the philly cheese steak. Newkirk’s nailed two east coast staples that are hard to find in SF!
Had the pastrami sandwich - it was really good!
Local sandwich spot serving amazing sandwiches. Not the largest servings you’ll find in the city but well curated choices. Service was a miss though. Would come back! - cheesesteak: lives up to the hype, must try! perfectly portioned and the ratio of meat to cheese to bread was perfect. - bacon egg cheese: didn’t like at all. thought it was plain and forgettable - steak with horseradish: sandwich was good but waaay too much horseradish. i think they messed up the spread that day. - turkey coleslaw: skip!!! so bad and tasted like store bought coleslaw
We walked over Newkirk's for sandwiches from Zuckerpunk's SF General Hospital where we were visiting our pal, good old Toby Sticklikker..he just got the final Wing Ding done to his Thingamabob to bring him inline with his inner self...The name changed from Toby to Tami but she'll always be Toby to the old Seaside gang! And...Man-O-Man that Newkirk's sure put out a great sandwich! ☆☆☆☆☆
Friendly, fast, professional staff. They seem like good people. Good coffee and BEC (gotta get the habanero and jalapeno sauces!). The outside of the building is unique and cool, and the inside is typical coffee house but a bit retro and very welcoming. Overall a good spot.
If you want something that’s close to NY breakfast sandwiches this is it. I’m from Long Island and visited San Francisco for the week and was really impressed by this
The only thing I get from this place is the Green Salad with Bacon. Super addicting, amazing bacon, amazing sauce. And actually they have these little hot sauces on the side when you receive your order and I even add those to the salad and its bomb...Sort of pricey though that's my only complaint, but that's everything in San Francisco lol
Best breakfast sandwich in SF - a New Yorker struggling to find a good Kaiser roll
Their BLT is amazing! Went to get a filling but healthier feed and honestly it was a delicious sandwich loaded with flavour and veggies. The staff were absolutely lovely as well! If I was from San Francisco I would be a regular for sure!
Had to stop by UCSF in the morning. I decided to look for a breakfast or coffee shop that served sandwiches that would be fast and convenient. This place did not disappoint. The sandwiches were delicious, the atmosphere was really nice and service was great. The prices are fair and not overdone like other places. I will definitely be back.
Newkirk's is a 5-star for me. It's one of those great low-key sandwich shops that feeds the locals. The food is consistently terrific. My go-to is the Steak sandwich, but I've got backups I enjoy for when I want to mix things up. Their spicy sauces are awesome, so be sure to try them if you like that kinda thing. One of the best things about Newkirk's is the staff -- they are always friendly, helpful, and down to earth.
One of the best breakfast sandwiches in the city. My go-to is the pastrami, egg and cheese. The cheesesteak and Italian sandos are also wonderful. On top of that their green hot sauce is the BEST. The people are also genuinely so nice. It’s just an A+ experience. Also, my partner is vegetarian and the impossible cheesesteak is a 10/10 vegetarian sandwich.
Newkirk's is a staple for my lunches! The sandwiches are good enough that I crave them at times. The place is appropriately staffed and the person at the front counter is friendly, prompted, and helpful. The decor is basic, which looks like easy maintenance and low fuss, but you wouldn't come here for the ambiance. The lunch rush can be heavy between 12pm-1pm, so I'd get there a bit before/after or order ahead. I have loved the the buffalo chicken sandwich and the salami sandwich. And, if you need a little pick-me-up after lunch, the coffee is pretty good.
Amazing breakfast sandwiches and house-made hot sauces.
Got the cheesesteak. It's not a Philly style cheesesteak nor does it pretend to be. But it hits hardest where it counts! Good meat and white American (my natural preference) coated evenly throughout. Nice French bread roll. Definitely used good ingredients. Dudes working there are pretty cool. Will go back to try the rest of the menu; especially the fried egg sandos!
One of my favorite spots for breakfast. Parking kind of socks, but if you have good parking Karma (and skills) the Universe makes is possible to have a really worth while breakfast. Lovely way to begin the day.
I work near by and I saw the sign that said cheesesteak. I am from the east coast so I let curiosity get the best of me and it was worth it. The bread is delicious, the sandwich is so good. Yes stop by if you get the chance. No it is not open late. And yes it can get busy so there can be a bit of a wait.
Enjoyed the Hash Brown sandwich. The bread was nice. Next time, I'll have to try the BEC and cheesesteak. Love the green sauce flavour here.
If you’re reading this, yes it’s really that good. And yes, you found the place you’re looking for. Delicious sandwiches, amazing hot sauce, super fast service. A gem of gems.
First time coming here and so happy I found it cause it’s now a go to spot! Great quality of ingredients and such amazing hospitality and service. The young lady who made my coffees too was the BEST! Cute and pretty big inside too! The salads and sandwiches are all amazing no joke!
Finished with my appts across the street at Zuckerberg General I was crossing Potrero and painted in a window I see CHEESESTEAK SANDWICHES!!! So, great advertising! Drew my attention! I walk in to a very basic, clean and inviting sandwich shop! Inviting for several reasons, plants all along the top window ledge, clean family style high bench table's, a simple and easy to read menu board, two classic vintage pinball machines and a friendly, personable and professional individual ready to take my order and strike up friendly conversations with the different customers. I ordered a classic cheese steak sandwich that was priced fairly, served hot and in a timely manner! This little sandwich shop is a little gem that I highly recommend if on that side of town. They serve breakfast sandwiches, coffee drinks and some special carbonated beverages I wasn't familiar with! P.S. make sure to bring a couple quarters with you so you can try your pinball wizard skills on one of the vintage pinball machines while waiting for your order!
I came here to try their salami, egg and cheese sandwich. I ended up trying that along with the BEC, and Horse on the Roof. I shared these sandwiches over 30 minutes later and they were amazing. They were still very warm and were packed with flavor. The owner was very friendly and the location was spotless. I'm definitely going to go back there again.
Had a NK Italian sandwich. Delicious. Service was friendly and easily accommodated diet restrictions. Ten stars!
On my continuous quest to find a decent breakfast sandwich in SF I stumbled upon this gem of a place in the Mission. Newkirks is the first good breakfast sandwich that I've found since moving to the city in 2020. It's a no frills sausage, egg, and cheese on a kaiser roll. Slightly runny fried egg, American cheese, sausage patty and butter. You don't need anything else. Served in 3 minutes. Had a delicious chocolate chip cookie also, and an ice cold can of coke. Just so satisfying. Bonus, they have pinball, and even though there was a mechanical malfunction the man behind the counter (owner?) came out to fix it on the spot. The price seems crazy at $11.50 for the sandwich, but I'd gladly pay it again and again. Can't wait to come back and try some of the lunch items as well! Thanks Newkirks!!!
Stopped by to check out their sandwiches on my ongoing journey to visit all popular SF sandwich shops. This place is right across the street from SF general hospital and a quick bike ride from my gym. I was hungry so I ordered two different sandwich options and they were so good I left without any leftovers to take home. Yummy bacon egg and cheese for sandwich #1 and a cheesesteak for sandwich #2. Both were delicious and I’ll definitely be back again to try out more of their menu, and to play some pinball 😁
I grew up around NY, grew up eating breakfast sandwiches. This place totally nails it, I keep coming back every week. Everything on the menu is amazing. The horse on the roof, pastrami egg and cheese and hash brown egg and cheese are all phenomena. It’s always flavorful and juicy. The vibe is great on the inside. Be sure to grab some sauces!
Newkirk's is hands down the best sandwich spot in the city. I go here at least once a week and it never disappoints. I wear my newkirks shirt proudly and tell everyone to go there when they ask me what it is. I LOVE the hash brown sandwich and the cheesesteak. I also recently had the chicken schug and that was incredible. But everything is amazing, definitely try a breakfast sandwich first. The house made hot sauces are awesome as well.
I grew up on the East Coast and it is not possible to find the same breakfast sandwich vibe in SF- until now! Newkirk’s is the answer! The Hashbrown sandwich is phenomenal, ratio of cheese, crispy bacon just right eggs and cherry peppers on the perfect roll. Homemade hot sauce and the best vibes. Go now.
Delicious breakfast sandwich. Good hot sauces. Lots of options. Relatively quick. Can’t go wrong
I saw Newkirk's on one of Adonis's videos on Instagram and decided I wanted to try it the next time I was in the city. I got the Horse on the Roof, my wife got the Hashbrown Sandwich, and my son got the SEC(not pictured because he was hungry and scarfed it down haha) The woman working behind the counter was super friendly and reminded me of things I normally would've forgotten on a to-go order like napkins and sauces lol The habanero-carrot sauce was good but the green sauce (tomatillo-jalepeno I think?) was a showstopper. It had such good flavor even if it was a little less spicy than the orange sauce. Definitely stopping by again when I'm in the area.
Great sandwich and hot sauce. I appreciate that they don’t make them enormous and jack up the price.
Outstanding breakfast sandwiches. I’m only giving it three stars for atmosphere because it was really cold in there. Also, the atmosphere is slightly sterile, though that isn’t necessarily very objectionable.
The owner is very chill great music selection every time I come in really enjoy the space not cheap on the meat inside the food you get here the eggs taste fresh I order the same thing almost every time I come in I’m originally from NY this is the closest breakfast food similar to that northeast taste I’ve tasted so far
This is my go to stop for breakfast almost every morning. You literally cannot go wrong with any of their egg sandwiches. I'm a creature of habit when it comes to food, so I always get the Egg & Cheese with hashbrown. So good! And the poppy seed bun is delicious. Their impossible cheesesteak sandwich is also a yummy option for lunch. Love this place! I come for the sandwiches but stay for the coffee.
NYC feel best breakfast sangwich in San Fran and the homemade hot sauces are delicious!
Had a roast beef special. Quality sandwich. Good, flavorful bread, tasty and balanced filling, horseradish forward. House-made hot sauces were complex enough and complemented the sandwich well. Decor is clean and simple while still being inviting and the service was friendly.

Fantastic takes on classic sandwiches. Make sure to try their homemade hot sauce. It’s more flavorful than spicy and it makes almost anything better.
Ohh well, what can I say? i love this place. Their HEC and BEC are fantastic. I could eat them every single day. Staff is always really nice. The place is cute and has some old pinballs that we like to play with while waiting for our orders. Sometimes we get our sandwiches and we go to Starr king and eat then while admiring the view of the city.
This kaiser roll and sandwich shop is an absolute gem! The rolls are perfectly baked—crispy on the outside, soft and airy inside. Every sandwich feels handcrafted with care and quality ingredients. But the real standout is their fermented hot sauce—it adds a unique tangy heat that elevates every bite. You can taste the depth of flavor from the fermentation process, making it unlike anything you’ll find elsewhere. Whether you’re grabbing lunch or just craving a seriously good sandwich, this spot delivers on flavor, freshness, and creativity every single time.
Best breakfast sandwiches in the city, particularly the ones on the poppy Kaiser roll. Our favorite is the PEC (pastrami egg cheese). The bread tastes so soft and fresh, eggs are perfectly cooked, proteins are done well. They ferment their own hot sauces. Highly recommended

Been here twice. I find the BEC sandwich to be a little too big with too much bun. One time I got it with avo and the avocados were slightly brown (a pet peeve though). The hot sauces are delicious. It’s worth trying and my husband really likes some of the bigger sandwiches but I’m still searching for that ideal nyc BEC.
The owner and staff are very friendly, and this is a nice addition to the neighborhood. Sandwiches are good. However, I'm not into chopped up meats, thus the 3 1/2 stars.. My family loves this place. Because my family is the majority, I would say, give this place a try. They're supposed to have a delish breakfast sandwich, NY style. I am going back to try it. Keep in mind that the prices are at the higher end.
The steak and cheese was decent, not the best I've had compared to joints on the east coast, but a solid sandwich. Only problem was that it was pretty overpriced. I paid $17.50 including tax for just the steak and cheese and in terms of size it wasn't even particularly large. I understand this is San Francisco but the value just wasn't there for me on this one
I’m from New York but I’ve lived in the bay for a year. This is the only good BEC I’ve had here. It’s overpriced, but they nail it and there’s no alternative so it is what it is. One suggestion: don’t close on Sunday. It’s literally the best day of the week for a breakfast sandwich. Even the big guy upstairs would agree.
Wonderful addition to the neighborhood. Across the street from San Francisco General Hospital. Great place to grab a filling breakfast sandwich or sandwich for lunch. We were greeted warmly by the worker here and it didn’t take too long for them to make our sandwiches to go. The place is a little hipstery and the sandwich prices reflect that but they seem to use quality ingredients so you get what you pay for. Tons of seating available if you want to dine in.
GREAT sandwiches, long wait times. Don't come during peak lunch hour, or you'll be waiting 30-45 minutes for a sandwich. I suggest ordering ahead, because they have some of the best sandwiches i've ever had. Come in when it's slow and take a chance to talk to the awesome staff! The owner told me all about the story of him starting the place with the horse!!!
Tried this place for the first time and boy we are definitely coming back!🐎 Did not have high expectations but their egg sandwiches proved us wrong. Had #1 egg sandwich with poppyseed bread and crispy bacon🥓🤤. It was delicious. The hot dipping sauce was also really good. Will definitely come back for more. Dine is also available, fyi. Let's support small business owners!🤩👏🥳
The place is quite basic, seems popular with locals: when we were eating, we saw people in PJ'S waiting. We ordered a bagel and coffee. Coffee was strong and hot, but I wonder since when drip coffee charges $5.5 with no refills. Bagel was not New York City level taste at all. We liked the waiters/cashiers: they seem chill, not stressed or disgruntled.
a decently solid breakfast sandwich. hit the spot in a way. simple. just thought it’d be a littler more interesting. a little bland. not much to it, a lot of bread to egg ratio. hot sauce as pretty good though!
Came here because TikTok. And may I say that for what we ate that morning, which was the hash brown sandwich, I would be going back. The sandwich was warm, tasty, and had a nice kick to it from the cherry peppers. Their orange hot sauce added another layer of flavor profile. They also serve Ritual coffee and have some fresh juices at hand. Service was friendly and quick and there’s plenty of open tables to enjoy their fantastic sandwiches.
I finally had a chance to try Newkirk's breakfast sandwich that is claimed by many as one of the best in the city. I got the HEC (ham, egg, cheese) and thought it was decent. Taste was superb, but the portion and price weren't as outstanding. I'm also not sure if the soft Kaiser roll is the best choice for a breakfast sandwich, it simply looks sloppy and underwhelming. Overall Newkirk's serves tasty breakfast sandwich with friendly, no-frills service and is at least worth a try.

I wish reviews are separate for food, price, service and venue. I would say 4 stars for food, 3 for price, 5 for service and 2 for venue. The fried egg sandwich with pastrami was good but the coffee needs work (ritual coffee is overrated, and that’s all they have), price was a little high for a breakfast sandwich at $10 and $4 for black coffee 🤨, service was SUPER GOOD, but the venue needs total work/remodeling. I didn’t want to sit in there for long as it felt dirty and run down.
Opinion only: good food but very slow service. Whether ordering online for pickup or ordering there, have to wait in line. This could be fixed.
Overpriced, sandwich said $15 I payed $20. Micro aggressions a plenty. Wasn’t even spoken to or acknowledged by manager standing behind the counter. Not one single word, they just continued with their conversation as if I wasn’t a paying customer
This is the third time this restaurant has made me late for something when on the third time I even Ordered More advanced than I usually do because I know that they have a problem getting food out on time to me. The first time was a pick up order and when I went in the lady making the sandwiches and the person taking the order claimed that they had no idea about my order and I had to prove it to them by showing it on my phone and then they said that they got the order, but there was a long line ahead of me, which is interesting because I was There to pick up and literally no one was in the restaurant nor did I see her making anything at all literally just standing there talking to each other, pointing their finger over at me intermittently as if I had done something wrong. Then, when they started finally making An order it was from a Colin and then they immediately started making that order which definitely wasn’t mine. Next two people walked in behind me and they just ordered from the counter and then they started making their orders immediately I was over 45 minutes late to work because of this and then when I tried to get a refund, it didn’t happen now I’m at the hospital or I’m trying to order food for a friend who’s sick and I’m standing out here in the cold on Christmas Day and my order keeps getting delayed and I paid for priority order what exactly is wrong with these people seriously it’s almost like they’re following the same mentality that a lot of the restaurants are out here where they act like they have like great food five stars an amazing reviews and that’s all they need to ride on and now customer service and the food sucks so thanks a lot will never be going here again and I will be telling everybody I know as a local not to come here

Tiny serving sizes and takes a long time to get out of there
