Authentic comfort food - I recommend the dumplings, beef noodles, spicy fish soup, black bean noodles, and beef wraps :-D

So glad I found this good Chinese gourmet noodles/dumplings restaurant in the neighborhood! Everything was delicious! Definitely will come back!

Excellent service. The cold noodles were very good, and the staff was friendly and accommodating. Easy to get to with public transportation. They take card as well :)

Authentic eatery, large portions very tasty. Very reasonably priced. We had Szechuan beef, and Mongolian beef. Would recommend 😀😋

Me and my friends come here all the time. They have good food and I love that all of the noodles here are handmade. The owners really nice and friendly and makes good recommendations. Definitely a no frills restaurant only seats about 20 people. There’s a little booth and a window for you to watch them make their dumplings and bread. I honestly haven’t had anything bad here and the prices are very reasonable. I noticed this place has gotten a lot of popularity lately due to tik toks and IG posts and they definitely deserve it, I hope with that the quality doesn’t drop and the prices don’t skyrocket. Our favorites: E1. Xian cold noodles (5/5) - long and flat hand pulled noodles topped with cilantro mixed with a savory, tangy, and spicy sauce. Order it before they run out. E22. Special hot oil noodle (4.5/5) - noodles that come with woodear mushrooms and baby bok choy, garnished with a healthy amount of garlic and chili powder with vinegar. One of my favorites when I want something garlicky and spicy. B20. Wontons in red chili oil (5/5) - this one always hits. And it’s not too spicy but the flavor is always immaculate. A17. Lamb skewers (4.5/5) - really nice and tender pieces of lamb with cumin and chili powder. C2. Chicken chow mein (4.5/5) - if you want something non spicy then I recommend this dish. Comes with a huge portion for the price and the flavor is great. G2. Dry sautéed string beans (4/5) - a good and flavorful veggie dish.

Hearty northern Chinese cuisine. Tasted pretty good and satisfying. Price is cheap compared with SF Chinatown but about on average at Sunset. Service is aunty-vibed which I don’t have a problem with but could be slightly harder if you don’t speak mandarin.

I really love their noodles made from scratch! Everything else was also yummy. Tempature inside was a bit chilly for dinning but I guess thats better for the kitchen staff since they are almost right there with you.

My friend took me here and I told him to order for me. The waitress (owner?) came to our table and recommended her favorite dishes. Amazing authentic Chinese place that I will be visiting frequently! I tried the marinated pork ears for the first time and they were so flavorful, a must order. The cucumber salad was exceptional, along with the twice cooked pork with cabbage, the beef pancakes, pork and chive dumplings and the hand pulled house noodles with beef. Love this place. Authentic as it gets.

The explosive chicken is insane but beef rolls and dumplings were just okay

One of the best if not the best Chinese spot in SF that really gives you the most bang for your buck. Noodles were amazing and the portions were huge. Service was also great. Spots like this with good tasting food and great value for money is what SF needs.

Would highly recommend this small hole in the wall restaurant! On top of the great authentic food, the staff were super friendly! We got pork chive dumplings and the spicy beef noodle soup. I absolutely loved the handmade dumplings skins with the juicy flavorful filling. Officially one of my favorite spots to get dumplings! The spicy noodles were also amazing and you can tell its hand pulled as well. The meat was very tasty but be careful if you're sensitive to spicy or can't handle a lot of it! It was a lot spicier than we anticipated (but still amazing nonetheless). They even have bagged baos I'm the front that you can buy to take to go. Will be back to try more dishes for sure :)

Happy Family Gourmet is a true hidden gem on Taraval. The hand-pulled noodles have an amazing texture—springy, chewy, and clearly made fresh in-house. The cold noodles with sesame are another standout: nutty, garlicky, refreshing, and perfect on a warm day. And the Shandong dumplings taste exactly like home cooking—authentic, juicy, and made with real care. Yes, it’s a small hole-in-the-wall spot, and some people mention the service. But the reality is it’s more of a culture barrier than bad service—the owner is genuinely friendly once you engage, and you can tell how much pride they take in their food. If you’re looking for flashy ambiance, this isn’t it. But if you want some of the best handmade noodles and dumplings in SF, this is the place.

J

Food is delicious and you can tell the dumplings wrappers/noodles are made in house. Would definitely be stoping by again!

If you’re looking for authentic Shandong food, this is it. Happy Family is the best kind of hole in the wall restaurant: no frills, no fuss, just incredible food. Expect the kind of dishes you’d get in a family kitchen in northern China. The menu is full of bold, hearty flavors and regional specialties that are hard to find elsewhere. The Cold Noodles are the best I've had stateside — deeply flavorful, handmade noodles, and clearly made with care. Be warned: this isn’t the place to come if you want polished service. The staff is efficient but direct, and the focus is entirely on the food. Come hungry, come with people who love real food, and don’t expect tablecloths.

I've been to 13 cities around China, this little place is probably the best example of Chinese outside of China. Yes they barely speak English but regardless they are very friendly and courteous.

This is our favorite neighborhood restaurant. The cold hemp noodle dish is out of this world!! All the noodles are made in house and are so fresh. The soup dumplings and green beans are scrumptious. The service is very quick but a tad brusk. But that’s ok because everything is so delicious!

This place has no atmosphere and they don’t speak English but it’s the best Chinese food you’ll find in SF. Thankfully I speak mandarin and was able to ask them for some recommendations - we ordered the Xian cold skin, cabbage and pork dumplings, and the beef roll. I could hear mandarin being spoken at most of the tables and people talking about which dishes they hadn’t tried before. Surprisingly, most tables when we went seemed to order a cold skin and a beef roll. The Xian cold skin was absolutely excellent. The chili oil sauce came out perfectly savory and it was the perfect accompaniment to the super wide and thin cold noodles. Also, the dumplings and beef roll tasted even better dipped in the sauce. The dumplings were super juicy and savory - I don’t know how they mix their fillings but it is out of this world good. The beef roll was a classic and also delicious. We also saw a tray of big puffy buns in the front and asked the server about them. They are stuffed with eggs, beef, or pork so we bought a four pack of the pork ones to take home and tray. Seriously delicious spot and well-priced. Highly recommend to anyone looking for authentic Chinese cuisine!

Highly recommend Happy Family Gourmet! This unassuming mom and pop Shandong restaurant is extremely tasty and authentic. Food is made just like what you would find at a street stall in China. You can tell their noodles, dumplings, buns...etc are made from scratch. Love that they don't skimp on flavor and amount of filling in their dumplings and buns, so the ratio is just right. Noodles are nice and chewy. Like many mom and pop Chinese places, they primarily take cash.

I ate family style and tried the beef roll cake, chow mein, fried dumplings with pork, steamed dumplings with crab, another noodle dish, and a side of cabbage. I can honestly say I enjoyed everything I ate, it was so good and then the leftovers the next day were also delicious. The waitress was very helpful in recommending dishes to us that were good. Everything was clearly fresh and the noodles were house made. 10/10 experience.

super delicious dumplings, amazing handmade noodle texture, great value, and wonderful people—what’s not to love? like other reviewers, if you don’t speak mandarin there may be a slight language barrier but it is more than worth overcoming for this hearty and homey meal. dumpling filling was juicy and plentiful and the skin had perfect bite; i’d recommend the pork and corn dumplings. noodle-wise, overall i’d say they dont have the most intense flavors but the texture and mouth-feel is actually Amazing. the shanxi style fried noodle was definitely the better of the two noodle dishes i tried (vs. xinjiang noodle w lamb). finally, the staff here are so sweet. my friend waved to the woman in the store that was wrapping dumplings and she came out at the end of our meal to ask us if we enjoyed the food and if we’d come back again :-).

This restaurant is extremely underrated. The fact that it’s 4.1 on Google is saddening to me. Hands-down, the best restaurant I’ve had since I visited mainland China. We enjoyed the Szechuan beef noodles and beef dumplings. Can’t go wrong with any of the hand tossed noodles on their menu!

Delicious hole in the wall dumplings and noodles! The Shandong folks know their carbs. You can watch 2 ladies swiftly making them throughout your meal - my 3 year old was very entertained. Other than dumplings (dozens of flavors), my favorite dish is the liang pi cold noodles. Better yet - mix the liang pi sauce with dumplings! Veggies and noodles soups are good too. They might suggest a fried chicken dish but I would prioritize the other things. They have frozen dumplings and other goodies too - we left with 300 dumplings!! Vinegar purists beware though - the house vinegar is very light. I’m tempted to bring my own 镇江醋 next time 🤣

A street food kind of place, small and comfortable. We had so many dishes and I don’t know the real names but there are pictures of all. Fish dumplings, they are delicious! Mixed with herbs. Soup dumplings with pork! Scrumptious! One of my favorites Beef roll, thin slices with veggies and herbs, crispy outside and full of flavors on the inside There is a pizza like dish with beef inside sliced thin and tender The fried rice is made to order, just like everything else and the wait was worth the time

Wow!! What a surprise as we’ve eaten at many, many restaurants in the area but somehow overlooked this incredible Shantung style family run restaurant. We had three dishes, the Xian hemp cold flat noodles, cabbage pork dumplings and the smashed cucumber with peanuts. Each dish was just outstanding. The Xian dish had a cumin base and was soo fresh and delicious with sesame oil and was only moderately spicy. The cabbage pork dumplings were also outstanding as was the cucumber. Once we sat down the staff was extraordinarily friendly and welcoming but did not speak any English only mandarin and Shantungese. Yet they made us feel so welcome. This has to be one authentic Homestyle restaurant as we felt like we had walked into a family restaurant in China. It was fun and great experience so we’ll be back soon!!

Such good food and the cutest granny in charge of the food. She gave us some tips on what to order and how the food mixes together. Glad to have someone who speaks mandarin. Very Authentic to my home town. Delicious all around with hand made noodles, dumplings, and Flatbread. Resturant definitely feels like an old Shangdong place serving the best fish dumplings this side of the Earth. Highly recommend for those looking for homey comfort food but this ain't your typical Chinese place.

Idk why this place only has 4.1 stars. It’s so freaking good. First of all, the Liang pi is AMAZING. Best I’ve had in my life. Second of all, the soy milk was frothy and not too sweet. The last thing I would say is the price. We paid $27.50 for one noodle, one dish and one drink shared between two people with leftovers. In this ECONOMY. unheard of.

Excellent xian cold noodles. Comparable quality to terracotta warrior but better value. Pork and Napa dumplings are solid with juicy meat fillings. Xiao long baos aren’t good. Would pass on them. Shen jian bao was ok. Not OG and more of a pan fried big dumpling as opposed to a fluffy fried bao with sesame seeds and chives on top. 4 out of 5 rating for the noodles!

This is a hidden gem. Authentic Asian food, fast and cordial customer service, English friendly, and cheap prices. They have a big menu including entrees as well as dumplings and buns, and options for both vegetarians and meat eaters. We got a whole box of vegetarian dumplings and 6 medium-sized vegetarian buns for $14 total. Filling was generous, buns were steamed upon order, and dumplings were boiled on order so it was all hot and ready to eat. The bun bread could have been a little softer and we would have liked more vinegar and hot sauce for the dumplings (they gave a small container) but we were still happy with the food. This is a great place to grab a snack or full meal for a low price.

No one here speaks English, but I have a trick: use Google translate to translate into traditional Chinese and let them read it. They don’t have a waitlist so you have to be aggressive and go inside and try to ask for a table for your party size. It helps if you speak Chinese. The food is delicious, but it is a very chaotic restaurant, especially if you are seated in the little hallway near the kitchen. People say the servers here are rude, but they’re actually really sweet if you can communicate with them in Chinese. They are all trying their best in that busy little restaurant. Our favorites were the lamb skewer, beef wrap, dry fry green beans, and pork shrimp chive dumpling. You can order frozen dumplings to take home for $13 an order (20 dumplings). There are two items on the menu labeled “pork fungus noodle” but only the top one (E11) is that. E12 is actually mixed seafood noodle (shrimp, squid, and fish).

J
Johnny Auyoung

Their hand pulled cold noodles with chili oil (E1 on the menu) is a must have and I would definitely come back just to enjoy the soft smooth squishy bounce! Everything else was a good 4/5: spicy ox tripe, beef roll scallion pancake, hot & sour soup, boiled fish slices, and fried lamb cumin. Some items tasted peculiar. This is a nice local neighborhood hole in the wall with just a few tables inside. Seems more popular lately since we had to wait about half hour for a part of 3 for a Saturday dinner. Servers are hardworking, quick, and direct. They speak Mandarin, with limited Canto/English. Recommend jotting down on a phone note what you want from the menu and showing them the list. Excellent value as our subtotal was $94 for 3 athletic hungry guys (before tip).

S
Simon Tan

E1 (cold skin noodles) is authentic and unique in a sea of nearby Chinese restaurants. However, it's mostly just noodle and doesn't really have meat. You'll want to add on some dumplings or veggies to make this a complete meal.

Came for dinner on a Tues night. It was almost full house at 7 pm and it can get crowded inside because the place is small. Most of the dishes we ordered were pretty decent except for 1-2 dishes. - beef soup noodle (4/5) - pork and cabbage dumplings (5/5) - xin Jiang noodles (3/5) [forgot to take pic] - beef roll cake (4/5) seasoning not evenly distributed, some parts are too salty - XLB (2/5) too sweet for my liking The noodles are very chewy and delicious. Overall, a great mom and pop shop with friendly staff.

Good food, but I’m giving 3 stars due to the slow service and the fact that the bill was written in Chinese, making it hard for non-Chinese customers to understand. In addition, the receipt wasn’t itemized — not sure if that’s even legal. Also, the suggested tip was calculated based on the total including tax and the SF health mandate.

Haven't been back since COVID and noted ownership and most likely chef has been changed. Dumplings were decent and fresh. Xinjiang noodles did not taste the same as before. Onion cake was okay so as the other appetizers.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Standard (1=Avoid, 3=Standard, 5=Can't Miss) fast, casual Chinese food. You can't expect this place to be anything more than what it presents itself to be, so anything less than a 3 would really be unfair. They make good quality, decently portioned and priced food... and yes, you'll feel a little rushed to get in and get out, but that's to be expected. The dumplings are handmade and what you'd expect for SF standards, the beef scallion pancake wrap very large but not the tastiest I've had, and the noodles were hand shaved and had great texture. Would I go out of my way to come here, not really, but I would try at least once!

I was drawn to Happy Family Gourmet by all of the great photos, but the food didn't deliver. Liangpi (2/5) - the liangpi wasn't springy and the sauce was neither tangy nor spicy. This dish was quite bland Beef noodle soup (2/5) - the noodles were passable, but the broth was flat and lacked depth. Beef tasted tough and chewy Overall, their food falls short compared to other options in the area

Taste good, but the service is really bad. 3 service personnel, and the store is not busy, no one line up, sit down and order called several times before and water also not give, tea also does not have to, anyway, don't know what busy, invoicing and waited for about 10 minutes, the list is written, the unit price also don't write directly to the total number, more funny also asks us to cash, we do not have so much ah, He gave us his card and waited another 10 minutes. This time I had a very unpleasant meal with my friends.

Food is good. However, all I got was noodles and dumplings, two items off the menu and they charged me $40. No drinks or anything else. Not sure if this was a mistake on their end but just left me very confused.

I came here once today and I’ll never come again. I observed the lady who makes the dumplings is also a waitress and cashier. She touched the mop, plate, water pitcher, and eventually cash - then went directly back to dumpling making without washing her hands. We were also seated in the hallway, where we were bumped by the servers multiple times when eating. I feel pretty sick seeing this and lost all my appetite. Please avoid this place or at least the dumplings for your own sake

not recommend. they pushed to order more dishes but mainly introduced expensive ones. At checkout, they only gave the total amount without any clear breakdown. You had no idea how the final bill was calculated. Very disappointing.
