Opinions de Trattoria Contadina San Francisco
Wow wow wow!!! The food was spectacular and the ambiance was everything you want in an Italian spot — lively, homey, and a touch of old school flare. Great vegetarian options! The salads were to die for, the bell pepper was mind blowing, and if I had to choose a last meal, the spicy rigatoni would be at the top of the list. 10/10 recommend!
Been in SF 10 years, in North Beach since 2019 and this is my favorite Italian place. A little off the main drag on a little (San Francisco) hill but the food is phenomenal. Specially the stuffed pepper appetizer. I love that it’s run by a 3 generation Italian family! So cute and wholesome.
This was the first time I ever visited Trattoria Contadina. We arrived 25 minutes earlier than our reservation (to find parking). The host set is at the bar and we had drinks while we waited for our table. The host came to is 5 minutes later and gave us a great table! They kept our drinks fresh. The food was amazing. I had the Diavolo pasta dish. It was incredible. My only reservation is that the food prices are a bit high, but the food is incredible and the atmosphere was very warm and happy. I highly recommend this restaurant. But it would be wise to Uber there or take the trolley car to reduce the frustration of finding parking.
5/5 for sure. This is one of my favorite spots in SF and I'm always reminded why. The atmosphere is such a good, classic city italian spot that is unrivaled by any other in the city (in my humble opinion). The food is top notch... for the love of god make sure someone orders the Carlesimo and thank me later. All in all, if you're looking for italian (or looking for some of the best food SF has to offer), this needs to be on your list.
The venerable server Federico said I should become a food blogger so this will be my attempt to honor his wish. (This is going to sound like a lot of flexing, but it's all in an effort to qualify how great this place is) At an odd point in my life I was concepting out a Italian place with my movie director cousin. It was going to be named after her Grandmother that she adored, and was deeply inspired by. I felt qualified because I had helped this hidden gem of an Italian spot restaurant Casa Nostra concept and build out their aperitivo menu. I also had a deeply inspiring ex business partner from Ischia that is a world renown Amari expert. Lastly, I knew that the Nonna's recipe is the crown jewel of italian cuisine and food in general. Trattoria Contadina not only does right by the legacy of Nonna's that worked tirelessly to bring Italian food to where it is today. It's fine tuning the classic deeply fresh and relevant. Something near impossible to do in a culture that clashes between deep tradition and futurism. Vince it's host is peak. The guy is warm, friendly, comfortably formal, knowledgeable, and quick to offer seamless help between the his coworkers and the restaurant floor. Esteban the bartender has a commanding presence that allows one to find deep ease while dining. He's confident, proficient, and works diligently to make sure guests have the best time possible. Federico has definitively lended the best of his experiences to this place. He's unimposing, eager to make adjustments if he can subtly detect any lack of enjoyment, and knows his shit deeply without needing to share that he does. Their Caprese is the best I've ever had. I literally had to just pause and savor the flavors in a almost cheese/strawberry "ratatouille" moment (movie reference). Their Aperol spritz also has the best ratios I've ever tasted. I truly enjoyed their Pesce Picata with it's lovely acidity that's balanced between the Beurre Blanc like sauce and salty capers. The spumoni dessert was ridiculously good All the salads are deeply solid, flavorful, and super worth The Mama Fratelli with additions of freshly grated cheese, black pepper, salt, and red pepper flakes was simply the best italian dish I've ever had. As I told Federico, it's easy to stick to the tradition and paint with the same tired old colors available within the cuisine. It's entirely something else to make food that's seeking to be as dynamic as Thai or high end Korean like Benu. I can safely say the chefs there accomplished this feat. Shoutout to the unnamed staff that I haven't met yet. You all have made my dining experiences so sleek, comfortable, and awesome. I deeply appreciate how you all lend your talents to such a world class spot.
My family was visiting from Japan and requested Italian. We reserved for a party for 7. They were able to accommodate my allergy son and they are also kid friendly. They gave our girls crayons and menus to color. We shared 2 appetizers and 4 dishes. Definitely enjoyed our meal and time spent there.
We made a same-day reservation and came in for a birthday dinner. The ambience was elegant but not stuffy, and the service was both friendly and professional. As many other reviews have pointed out, their roasted bell pepper (very cheesy, with a creamy tomato sauce) is excellent. The gnocchi was perfectly cooked and very filling, with either the same or a similar sauce to the bell pepper (no complaints here!). The tiramisu was exceptionally light and balanced in flavor. We will definitely come here again, soon!
Enjoyed our experience here. We came late at night (near closing time) and service was still excellent. We had the bruschetta (great), gnocchi (our tables favorite), carbonara (could’ve been better) a clam pasta (lacked some flavor but the clams themselves were good), and the tiramisu (great). Entrees were low $30s each. Overall, recommend this spot.
So… my daughter, who’s a Berkeley Senior, picked out this place for Friday night dinner,as we drove up LA to visit her. The neighborhood was loaded with so many great options. And we found a nice nearby street parking and were very impressed by all the surrounding cool vibe restaurants. Trattoria was very nicely done. Cool cozy vibe for sure. Our waiter, was great and highly informative. Really helped us figure out what to order. The food was delicious and more than enough to go around. The Caesar Salad was excellent and enough for three of us. we ordered three different pasta dishes and they were all delicious and well-portioned. The wine selection and drink selection were also great. Highly recommend this iconic jewel!
Excellent service and atmosphere. I had the classic spaghetti and meatballs and was a bit underwhelmed. Sauce was delicious though I would note very buttery. The meatballs themselves were very dry. Part of the reason why my group came here was because we were told the servings were gigantic - I would say they were at best average size leaning towards small. Would have gotten appetizers if I had known what I was to get. Probably will come back and try it again though.
This spot offers delicious pasta and decent service. The classic Italian dishes, particularly the pasta, are a definite highlight. However, I would strongly advise you to skip the cocktails. I tried three different cocktails, and all were disappointingly similar in taste. Stick to the wines. Given its popularity, reservations are highly recommended to secure a table.
I had a great experience at this cozy Italian restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, with a charmingly rustic feel, complete with a well-stocked bar and string lights that give it a homey, comfortable vibe. The service was friendly and attentive without being overbearing, and our waiter was helpful with the menu. The real standout of the meal, and something you can tell from the photos, is the sheer size of the portions. They don't mess around! I ordered a pasta dish topped with a generous amount of fresh basil and what looked like burrata or a similar creamy cheese. My friend's spaghetti with a huge, impressive-looking meatball was also massive, and the clams in white wine sauce were abundant and delicious. You definitely get your money's worth here, and you'll likely have leftovers. For dessert, we had a simple but delicious bowl of vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup. It was the perfect way to cap off a very filling meal. I highly recommend giving this place a try.
The restaurant is very nice. Looks like they have concern their local charm. Italian food is delicious. Basically everything is very typical Italian cuisine. All the pastas are delicious and very delicious cheese dishes. I want to try many dishes and everything was delicious. There were some room for improvement when it came to the gnocchis. I know this is a very complicated dish and it takes a lot of time in my case they were a little bit undercooked, but the flavors were there and I have to say it was delicious. If they would’ve left it a a bit longer, that dish would’ve been perfection. Recommend you share this dish with the green wine the offer wine from Napa, California, Italy enjoying your dish with a great wine offer You know the place is very cozy. Delicious. We had a great time here I went with my friends and the food was very good. Even the very typically Italian you will have a great time and I’m pretty sure you will enjoy the food.
The first time I came here I had an amazing pasta and great service. Came back with a friend for a second time and had a lack-luster experience. The pastas were fine, but nothing close to what it was before. My mom does a better pasta. Their tiramisu was good and the bartender was extremely nice and accommodating to our drink requests. Big props to him! I wish the waiter could learn a thing or two from him.
We both lived in SF 30 years ago and came SF to celebrate our 30th Wedding Anniversary. We use to go 3 to 4 times a month and the food and service was always outstanding, and I always ordered Pavarotti or #7 as it use to be referred as! However, this time was very disappointed and I am sure Pablo didn’t make it and one of the sous chefs cooked it for me. Unlike 30 years ago, the prosciutto and sun-dried tomatoes were barely visible this time, and there was very little flavor. Such a disappointment with such high expectations! 🙁 Then they brought us an order of tiramisu as a gift to celebrate our 30 anniversary, very nice gesture, however, when I received the bill they charged me for the dessert! Are you kidding me! Well, no need to come back again! I have great memories of great food, with great friends, unfortunately not this time! Thanks for the memories!
Quality was disappointing. The Caesar salad was drenched in cheap dressing and pre-shredded cheese. The Italian soda was just sparkling water with cheap syrup dumped into it. The pork was overcooked, the pasta was very salty. On top of that the servers were in a rush to turn over our table. I came back from the bathroom with my leftover food in a box already. Bad experience.
