This restaurant in Chinatown is a perfect 10/10. The food is incredible with so many amazing choices. Service is great and although you may have to wait, it’s well worth it! Michelin star, served multiple international heads of state - the door has more prestigious awards than I thought possible… if you go to one place China town, Z & Y won’t disappoint!
We waited for half an hour to get a table and it’s all worth it. One of the best chinese meal I had. Although we ordered some of the spicy dishes, they weren’t really that spicy. It’s tolerable, I even requested a chilli oil. One of the best meal we had in San Francisco. Recommended.
The food was delicious and authentic. What was “medium” spicy burned through our throats but tasty nonetheless. The tea-smoked duck was great, but it should be bundled with greens, sauce and wrappers by default cause it makes no sense any other way - it could just be $10 more expensive and come as a package. Other than that the service was good and the overall experience well worth a Michelin Bib-Gourmand.
Absolutely loved this place. The food is high quality and extremely tasty, the service is fast, and everyone is very polite. There was nothing left in our plates, and the kids loved the scallion pancakes!
Food was amazing! Everything was fresh, hot, and so flavorful! This place def give hole in a wall vibes and staff was very friendly and kind. Throw tail was to die for as well as the duck 😍
Came in on a weekday night, the place was still packed but we waited for about 10 min for a table of two. The food was absolutely delicious and tasty. The service was fast and friendly. I would recommend it 💯 and it is very much worth the wait.
Incredible food experience for spice lovers! We got the Explosive Chicken with Chillies, Mapo Tofu and Shrimp Fried Rice with Truffle.
We went here to celebrate my sons 17th birthday. It was a great family friendly restaurant. It was really easy to make a reservation. They even accomodated some last minute changes we called earlierin the day to make. The food and customer service were really good as well. Overall great experience.
Incredible dining experience from start to finish. The ambience sets the perfect mood, and the staff is exceptionally welcoming. We loved the Tan Tan noodles, Chicken with Explosive Chili, and the mini shrimp—every dish was packed with flavor and offered that satisfying, soul-warming heat.
HANDS DOWN THE BEST CHINESE / SZECHUAN DUMPLINGS IN ALL OF SAN FRANISCO! Holy crap! This place is the absolute bomb! Nestled in the heart of Chinatown, SFO, this place is amazing! We stumbled in after trying two other dumpling restaurants that we declined to even order. They were just sad, smelly, and disappointing. We found Z&Y and we were so pleased. We ordered a little bit of everything off the menu. What was going to be a nice little afternoon snack turned into dinner. Drinks, dumplings, the works... it was all fabulous! There is nothing I didn't like. We had a table full of food and we ate until we were stuffed. The price is perfectly fair for the freshly made dumplings that come steaming hot to the table. Service was on-point and it was nice and quiet, as we had the entire place to ourselves. Do yourself a favor, skip the other mediocre dumpling places in SFO and check out Z&Y, you won't be sorry!
AHHHH-Mazing!! Fit for 2 presidents and for for YOU too! Probably the best chance to have a Michelin Star meal, but on a reasonable budget. The portions are all shareable. 3 of us got the large Hot and Sour soup, but could have served 8!! I ate 3 bowls myself. Writing this review is making my mouth water again. Need to know, it's a small footprint so it may take some time to get a table. But, it's 1 million percent worth any wait. My only regret is I don't live close enough to go every week.
The food at Z & Y Restaurant in SF’s Chinatown is bold, authentic, and packed with flavor — perfect if you love Sichuan spice! We tried the chili-spiked dishes and dumplings, and everything was delicious with generous portions. The service was quick even though it was busy, and the atmosphere is casual and lively. Highly recommend stopping by early to avoid the wait — definitely worth it! 🔥🍜🍗
It's a bit pricey compared to other restaurants in the area, but it is somewhat justified by the flavors. The food here is much tastier than many others along this street. The Mongolian beef was really good in particular along with the string beans. I was told the fried rice was good for two but our group of 5 had a hard time finishing it since we also had chow mein. Overall, I would return but I hope they can bring down the costs just a bit.
So worth coming in here. It’s a smaller restaurant but the servings are massive! I recommend the egg rolls for an appetizer! My husband got the chicken with explosive chilies and we could have easily shared this. Also they have chopsticks as your silverware. I recommend trying it since you are in Chinatown 🤷♀️ I’m not at all good with them but I managed just fine. They do offer forks if you need them. We are going back for a second time during our short week here because it’s just that good! Oh and they have a Michelin Star!!
Five stars for Z&Y Peking Duck! This place is the real deal—super authentic and totally delicious. We went all out and the food was incredible. The Peking Roast Duck lived up to the hype; the skin was perfectly crispy and the meat was so tender. We also demolished the tender Black Pepper Prime Ribs, amazing Grilled Giant Shrimp, and fresh veggies. It’s super kid-friendly too! The best part for my little one was the adorable apple dim sum—such a fun treat. The environment feels high-end and modern, which is great. Highly recommend this spot for a fantastic family dinner!
Our wanderings led us into the vibrant labyrinth of San Francisco’s Chinatown, where lanterns sway like drunken philosophers and every alley hums with the promise of either enlightenment or indigestion. There, tucked between apothecaries and shops selling mysterious trinkets that defy both science and warranty, we were seeking Z & Y Restaurant. The place possesses all the charm of a tax office, no pretense of grandeur, no flattering lights, no velvet draped corners for the idle rich to whisper inanities. The proprietors perhaps appear blissfully unaware that aesthetics might play any role in the dining arts. And yet, what they lack in polish, they more than redeem in palate. We ordered a modest few dishes, by which I mean the table soon resembled a battlefield of abundance. At first sight, I felt the sort of despair a man feels upon seeing his week’s correspondence pile up on Monday morn. “This,” I whispered gravely, “will not end well.” But lo! The tragedy never came. Against all reason and integrity, we made it to finish line. And then, ah, cruel twist of fate, a dessert appeared. Sweet, subtle, and unexpectedly divine. One might call it the sally after the storm, a confection so delightful it could almost make one forgive the chairs, which appear to have been designed by an enemy of comfort. This place may never seduce you with chandeliers or fine linen, but it woos the stomach as a poet woos a muse: with sincerity, passion, and a touch of beautiful chaos. It is not fine dining but it is honest dining, and that, is far rarer.
Please take some time (in your itinerary if you’re traveling to SF or make a point as a Bay Area local) to visit Z & Y Restaurant!! This place has some of the best Sichuan food in the entire Bay Area! The fry on the chicken and shrimp were amazing and the meat inside was still tender and juicy! The sauce on the shrimp was sweet and tangy. The beef had the best spice and heat to it, and the dumplings were delectably sour! There’s a reason why presidents have been to this restaurant! Please come and visit!

Phenomal food, the tea duck is so flavorful and aromstic! Very glad we came here during our SF visit
The yummiest food!!!! The tea duck is unreal. The mapo pork tofu was so well seasoned and a flavor explosion!
Authentic Szechuan food! Even better than Szechuan restaurant in Shanghai. service is great.
the food was so good! the chicken and tan tan noodles were numbing my mouth just like you want szechuan food to be
The food was incredible! A bit of a wait because of how popular it is, but definitely worth it! Would recommend the honey walnut shrimp (absolutely immaculate)

Y & Z absolutely delivered! We had the best hot and sour soup -- perfectly tangy and comforting -- and the most flavorful beef chow mein. Every bite was delicious. Can't wait to come back!
Food was excellent. \nService was amazing.\nGreat ambiance.\nHighly recommend this place
The best chinese restaurant in San Francisco hands down! Very unique cooking style..... consistently good food all the time!
If you're reading this, there might be a long wait. But it won't disappoint. As a huge Szechuan chicken fan -- I can confidently attest to the absolute fire food that this place can cook up.

GREAT chicken chili! This is the signature dish which we went for. Place was super busy so perhaps limited attentionm but great food :-)
Amazing food and great atmosphere. Not too long a wait to get a shared table on a Friday evening. The octopus dish was stunning.
First time here and we got the Mapo Tofu, Eggplant in garlic sauce, Chicken with Chili peppers (Laziji), Peking Duck and Cumin Lamb. The first three were really good, definitely comparable to the best of those dishes that I've had. However I feel like they skimped even more on the chicken than I think is normal for Laziji. The Peking Duck was good but not exceptional, still prob worth for people that really like Peking Duck. The Cumin Lamb was kinda disappointing, it had very little flavor which was unfortunate since its one of my fav dishes at Sichuan places. Was a bit bummed they didnt have pork intestine but I get it. I'll definitely still come here again and just get the first three dishes and try something else.
We dined here on our first evening in San Francisco. Terrific place! The atmosphere reminds me of Chinatown restaurants back home in NYC. Friendly, helpful servers, and boy, did our dishes come up fast! The lamb hot pot was very spicy but enjoyable. The Eggplant, General Tso's Chicken Beef Chow Mein, were all excellent. We weren't crazy about the tea smoked duck or the pork dumplings, but all in all, it was a great place for dinner. I'd certainly come back to sample some of the other dishes.
This is an absolute must try when in Chinatown SF. The food is very authentic and flavorful. We tried the clam specialty dish which was steamed clams in a preserved vegetable soup base with garlic. Super interesting flavor combinations. The chili dumplings were delicious with thinner skin than their traditional Chinese counterparts. The mapo tofu was a wonderful blend of spice and numbing while still having the underlying flavors. The star dish was the tea smoked duck which was absolutely to die for. You wrap it in a thin wrap with chives and sauce. I will come back.
The food was good. We enjoyed the fried crab, Mongolian beef, my favorite was the salt and pepper prawns...omg! Yummy! And the shrimp chow main. Restaurant is cold so dress warm. \n\nLocation: No…

Very tasty Chinese kitchen in the China town of SF. ambiance is not very cozy, a bit busy but it is part of the charm. You won’t stay too long in any case - food is rapidly served.
Extremely good food. staff is kind. Just a small queue before entering Price is slightly high as prices are high in San Francisco. Go there !

Nice Chinese restaurant with creative dishes . Huge line in front of restaurant so make a reservation or be prepared to wait . Lovely dish called exploding chili chicken . Crispy battered chic…
We had high expectations given the restaurant’s reputation, but unfortunately the experience fell short. The spicy chicken had far more dried chilies than chicken, the cumin lamb had more onions than lamb, and the chili lamb was overwhelmed by coriander and garlic rather than balanced flavor. Service was also challenging. The restaurant seemed short-staffed, and we had to call someone each time we needed assistance, as no one checked on us during the meal. We also waited almost an hour to be seated despite trying an online reservation, which already requires a minimum of four people. (We were 3 people) Overall, the experience didn’t match the expectations, and there’s definitely room for improvement in both food balance and service.
I used to come here all the time back when I lived in SF, and I was really craving their chili crab. I stopped by on a Wednesday around 11:30am—right when they opened—and there was no wait. I asked the waiter to confirm which chili crab was the one I remembered, he pointed it out… and unfortunately, when the dish arrived, it wasn’t the same. This version was fried and then tossed in chili, and it just wasn’t what I was hoping for. When I mentioned it, they didn’t seem particularly concerned and ignored me, and I get it...they’re not going to remake an entire crab. So we ate it. We also ordered a soup and fried rice, both of which were not bad. But overall, it wasn’t the experience I came for, and the real dealbreaker was downstairs: the bathroom floor was so slippery and oily that it felt unsafe—and this was right after opening. It made me wonder how often it’s actually cleaned. Disappointing visit, and I’ll probably skip it next time.
