Tip: Be sure to check the market price of seafood before ordering, as it can significantly impact the final bill. Consider sticking to non-seafood options for a more budget-friendly meal.

Small nice northern Chinese food. Great service!
I wanted to give it a 4.5 star JUST BECAUSE the price is overly expensive. BUT! Considered about me or other people can always review this place / look at the menu price / ask for the market price on the seafood before ordering and dining in I'll give it a 5 star because the food quality and the taste is well deserved. FRIENDLY REMINDER: PRICE CAN BE EXPENSIVE so think before you act. We "looked up on yelp reviews and price" and decided to give it a try and check it out because the price of this place is pretty famous for expensive congee in the SGV area. We order 2x dried scallop, prawn and clams congee ( $14.99 x 2 ) + a 2.5LB of crab ( market price is $25/LB ) + pea sprouts ( $10.99 ). It comes out to be around $107. So you see, price is considered expensive for chinese restuarant. BUT! The pea sprouts came first and it tasted decent - good i would say and its better than 90% of other places in the area so the price for this is alright. The seafood congee is wonderful with alot of taste and alot of FRESH "seafood" in there. Congee price is double the ones outside but its worth it. The Crab is also fresh and it had alot of meat but thats the most over price one. I would totally recommend this place. Other than the QUALITY AND TASTE OF IT, Not because i have the money or I'm rich but I know what I pay and I know what I want to try and check it out before I come. THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU COME BUT ONCE YOU DECIDE TO TRY THIS OR DINE IN AND ORDER THEN PLEASE DON'T COMPLAIN ABOUT THE PRICE. BE SMART.
Perhaps one of the best sauce and youtiao (kinda like an asian savory churro/donut), crispy and lightly sweet, I've had. The porridge (we got their signature seafood combo) is also delightful, they make it on the spot and the ingredients are fresh, full of flavor but no heavy lingering aftertaste. The fermented bean preserve on the side also go wonderfully with the porridge. Fast, clean service, would recommend.
Great experience on the service, food are lovely and tasty. Best porridge place in town. Defintaly Recommand.
Very tasty porridge. The dishes are also matching very well with the porridge
Rich, tasty and with seafood
The meals are very delicious. I love it. I'll definitely visit here again.
really really tasty porridge. It is on the pricy side if you order seafood.
Silky Porridge & Crispy Donuts—A Love Story in Every Bite • How to order: Step 1: Choose your porridge base (e.g., pork, seafood, abalone & scallop). Step 2 (optional): Add toppings like black chicken, frog legs, crab, clams, or other seafood for extra flavor and texture. • What I tried:• Abalone & Scallop Congee with black chicken — rich, silky, and surprisingly balanced. • Pork Congee — classic, comforting, and exceeded expectations. Both bowls were flavorful, generous, and deeply satisfying. • Don’t skip this: The Chinese donut (油条) is a must-order. Crispy outside, airy inside — perfect for dipping into hot congee.
One of the best porridge in town and right now the best winter comfort food! Their porridge is top tier and tasty! Loved their mushroom porridge and shrimp with alcohol! Their seafood quality is great and you can taste it.
I was pleasantly surprised how yummy this place was. I saw this place waiting for ramen last time so came to try out today. The beef in spicy sauce wasn't that spicy but was good with it's unique taste. My kids loved the free sides especially the peanuts. We ordered their best known poridge per the server (scallop porridge, 3 portions). We ordered 4 add-ons: fish, pork, 1000yo egg, and a crunchy white root. We included a Chinese donut. Everything was good, better than I expected. Is it a bit pricy, yes, but the quality of the ingredients is worth it in my opinion. I didn't know the base poridge includes shrimp and clams. I think I may add more clams next time. On a cold night, it hit the spot.
Good congee and side dishes! I highly recommend scallop, prawn and clams congee, but the mini bus were just ok. Honestly, their congee is much better than the average rating.
Really impressive my man! Exactly taste like what I have in China, expect the price are little expensive and as usual, you will get hungry soon after it! But nevertheless it’s the best porridge I can ever find in west coast so far, or congee? Try it out!
Good comfort foods. Must try !!!!!
I haven't eaten it for a long time. I added bullfrog and preserved eggs. It is still delicious and I can't stop eating it.
Literary my MUST visit congee place for my single LA stay.

Omg the best best best porridge ever Slightly pricey esp when you get the crab, but it’s so worth it
If you like congee 🥣 ..... You will like this spot
This porridge truly surprised me, in the best way. Smooth, comforting, and full of depth, it’s the kind of dish that feels simple yet thoughtfully made. The texture is perfectly balanced, silky without being watery, hearty without feeling heavy. You can really taste the quality of the ingredients, and every spoonful feels nourishing and satisfying. What stood out most was how flavorful it was without being overpowering. It’s comfort food done right, the kind that makes you slow down and enjoy the moment. Whether you’re craving something warm on a cold day or just want a wholesome, well prepared meal, this porridge hits the spot. I’d definitely come back just for this. Highly recommended.

Taste good but on the expensive side. Congee is per person, add-ons are additional cost that add up quickly. But it was a nice small place and food is good. You pay for what you get.
Congee specialty restaurant with four different live seafood selections -- locally farmed small red abalones, Dungeness crabs from northwestern coast of United States, crabs from Vietnam and lobsters from Maine.
It's like a make your own porridge place, you choose a base than choose the ingredients you want to add. Good place for porridge but a little too pricey, and dishes other than the porridge aren't that good.
Food good. Lot of traffic on Valley and they drive bad. And slow. This is the waiting to get out parking lot.
Congee here is great! Sadly that’s really the only thing here. I wish they had noodles or something more. Wish the AC was a bit better too. I was sweating like a pig as I’m gorging on the porridge.
Thick and Hot Porridge with beef/Seafood/Pork chop/... Try adding Chinese donut into the porridge for the crispy taste. Somehow expensive for the price.
2019 - Hou Zhou Wang restaurant provides the best congees in Los Angeles with live seafoods: Lobsters, Caabs, and Abalone. The casserole is a classic of Chinese cuisine that runs through the global city. In China, the feudal dynasty was once sealed as a royal food. Dried Scallop, Prawn & Clam Congee and Abalone and Prawn Congee are shown here.

A pretty solid institution overall! Not exactly sure why there are so many negative reviews. the congee was very tasty (I got the pork rib, congee with clams and razor clams added), did not contain much MSG, which I'm usually pretty sensitive to. not over salted, was great, warming, and healthful meal to have especially when I was recovering from being sick. The only drawback that I have is that the conjuring was a little watery from my standpoint, would've liked 25 to 30% more rice. However, this may purely be stylistic. I didn't get the fresh seafood added, but would definitely bring my parents here next time to try it out. A solid institution and I would definitely come back!

Called twice to order to go, no one picked up. Ordered to go at the restaurant and been waiting for at least 30 mins for a to go order. Super slow even there was only one table at the restaurant. The food is good tho.
Pros: Food is pretty good, tasty, and fresh. Good environment and dining ware. Cons: Overpriced, doesn't worth the money with such easy-to-make food. Unfriendly service.
A bit over priced...under staff , food is ok
We ordered a seafood congee and a chicken one and they taste THE SAME. The congee is overpriced and simply NOT WORTHY. The most tasty thing on the table is possibly the soybean sauce on the side. The price is indeed too high for just putting things together in a pot.
only found dishonesty here. The weight they told us of the lobster is much bigger than it is. And didn't find tail and the other claw. Huge disappointment
Plain porridge was not fresh. It tasted sour.
No congee true taste. It is just a media to boil seafood only in a big round clay pot. Rice itself was not fully melted. It seems like they were added on the top of a tub of rice flour with water and added cooked rice for decoration with choices of seafoods

STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. They charged $70+ for a crab in the porridge. Outrageous.
Bad food, bad taste. This is the huo zhou wang, which hasn't changed for years.
The service is so bad. The waiter's attitude is extremely poor. With two children, I didn't want to sit by the entrance, but despite available tables, they wouldn't allow us to sit, saving them for more customers. There were no reservations or waiting customers at all. Really disappointed!
I was sick, and needed congee then, so I ordered the silkie chicken congee. FYI, the direct translation of Hou Zhou Wang means "Good Congee King" *** SPOILER ALERT *** They don't deserve the name. The congee was oily and the portion was small. They were very stingy on the chicken, and generous with the msg and oil. Oh, did I mention it was pricey too? I paid $20 for a bowl of congee that just rice and few pieces of chicken.
In Chinese, we call this kind of restaurant is 'black heart store'. We paid more than a hundred dollar for a very normal congee which most Chinese could cook at home. What the restaurant only wants to do is to "rob your money!" Be careful! Don't go this suck restaurant!! 这是一家黑店!!!
Really bad service! Extremely slow and expensive. I like the taste but the bad experience made me stop going
They are not open on Tuesday at 11:00. Dont be here if you plan to have lunch here.
TLDR: Found hair in food, waitress accused us of planting the hair. One of the worst experiences dining at a restaurant. There was a strand of hair that was in the congee when I was served. We noticed it immediately and told the waitress about it. The waitress grabbed the hair and looked at my female friends hair color in disgust. Told us that the kitchen staff doesn't have this color of hair and blame our group that it's one of our hair. The congee was literally served 10 seconds ago and we already noticed it was hair on the first stir. Gladly my friend took a video and we found proof that it was originally in the congee. We accepted the resolution of them giving us a 10% discount only on the congee and not on the other items. We weren't making a fuss about the hair in the first place, just pointing it out. The waitress response was totally unacceptable. Accusing the customer for planting the hair instead of resolving the issue first. The food was mediocre at best. Expensive congee that taste bland.
I spent total $103 on this POT. Just a congee with some seafood. Really expensive. Taste just a congee. don't Worth. Disappointed. Never ever come back again. And the waitress like new there. Don't know anything at all.

Can you imagine getting charged $230 for 3 ppl just with congee and two appetizers? The waiter steered us into ordering much more expensive options without telling us about the price. We added one medium sized crab (if not small) and that crab alone they ended up charging us $90 because it’s “market price”. The waiter also asked us to order the seafood congee which is $25, per person (beware of this when you order), instead of the $15 per person option we were trying to get. When we saw the bill we were all shocked… I’d say the main thing is probably the astronomical price they tried to charge for the crab. It’s a scam. Beware of that and you should be fine ordering individual portion of congee and confirm on price.
Dishonest business. I ordered $30 worth of congee with $10 add-ons (for pick up), but received no add-on at all. They refuse to honor the order, and said there’s nothing they can do. How outrageous! There goes my $10 down the toilet. The congee tastes watery as well, would definitely avoid in the future.
