Opinions de Liu Roast Fish San Gabriel
This grilled fish is an absolute delight! The fish is perfectly cooked, with its skin crispy and the flesh tender and juicy. The seasonings are just right, creating a harmonious blend of flavors that tantalize the taste buds. The aroma that wafts from it is irresistible. Every bite is a burst of deliciousness, making it a truly memorable dining experience. Highly recommended!
We got what we ordered pretty fast. The fish was delicious! I give the highest rating based on taste and his fast the food came out after I’ve placed the order. As for the service, the trick is to go up to the waiter or waitress yourself and ask for what you need. They are very responsive. They get super busy so it’s not a restaurant for someone impatient. Don’t expect them to fill up your water for you automatically. You have to ask them for it.
Holy crap this place is delicious. The black cod in home style sauce and the garlic sauce are both amazing. So fresh with a crispy skin and soaked in unbelievable sauce. we added rice stick, shiitake, leeks, and oyster mushrooms. Don’t be afraid of the Chinese language menu- it’s easy to order on the iPad and you’ll be glad you did!!!
The food and service are always amazing. This was our 2nd visit and never disappoints. We had the Lamb and beef BBQ skewers and the spicy fish hot pot. We will be back to visit again.
Liu's Roasted Fish offers a cozy dining experience with expertly roasted fish that’s crispy outside and tender inside, complemented by flavorful marinades and tasty side dishes. The inviting atmosphere, rich aromas, and attentive service make it a must-visit for seafood lovers. Excellent experience here, highly recommended!
It's a very nice experience with such a big portion and reasonable price. The service are nice, my water cup was never empty! Recommended if you are craving for authentic traditional northern Chinese food.
I’ve had roasted fish from Liu countless times when I lived in LA, and honestly, it’s the best I’ve had anywhere in the country. I’ve lived in major cities like New York, Chicago, and Seattle, but nothing comes close to the roasted fish at Liu Roast Fish. LA holds a lot of great memories for me, and if I visit LA again, a stop at Liu is a must! My partner and I even used to argue over that fish because I was accused of eating too fast LOL!
It's a great place. I brought my family here for dinner. The service is in place, very friendly, and the food is excellent and delicious. I will come again.
This restaurant is amazing. I’ve been a regular customer there for years. Recommend House special Qing jiang Fish
A must visit whenever I come to LA! The fish is the most flavorful and they silkworm which is very unique. The service is always warm and welcoming.
Great dinning experience. Third time coming always get the house special fish. Worth the trip down here.
Yesterday, my family and I went to Lao Liu Grilled Fish, and it truly lived up to its reputation! As soon as we stepped in, the aroma of grilled fish filled the air, and the bustling, warm atmosphere made the place feel lively and inviting. We ordered their signature dual-flavor grilled fish, and the design was so thoughtful! One half was spicy, and the other half was non-spicy, perfectly catering to the different tastes in our family. The spicy side was incredibly flavorful, with a balance of heat and a hint of sweetness that made it absolutely addictive. The non-spicy side had a rich, savory broth, and the fish was tender and juicy with no hint of fishiness. Even the kids enjoyed it! In addition to the grilled fish, we ordered some skewers, like lamb and beef tendon. Each skewer was grilled to perfection—crispy on the outside and tender on the inside—generously coated with cumin and chili powder, making them irresistibly fragrant. The beef tendon, in particular, had the perfect chewiness and was packed with the smoky flavor of the grill. Since we had kids with us, I also ordered shrimp fried rice for them. The rice was fluffy and perfectly cooked, with large, plump shrimp. My child loved it so much that they finished half a bowl in no time, happily praising how delicious it was. The dining experience was further enhanced by the welcoming ambiance. The staff were friendly and attentive, the food was served quickly, and the environment was clean and well-maintained. Overall, it was a fantastic meal, and my whole family left feeling satisfied. Lao Liu Grilled Fish is definitely a great spot for family gatherings, and I can’t wait to come back and try more dishes next time!
I came here having heard of their reputation of good roast fish, but didn’t expect them to have great skewers as well! The fish menu was really good. I ordered “mild” spicy and I could still cope with it just fine. The skewers have low salt options. They have the silk worm too. I grew up eating this and it’s not easy to find it in the US. The servers are very friendly and happy, pretty rare in this era!
We tried their signature Grilled Fish, featuring one side with spicy seasoning and the other with garlic on black cod. We also enjoyed fresh cucumber salad, scallion tofu, crispy fried buns with condensed milk, and chicken chow mein. Overall, Lao Liu Jia Grilled Fish offers a delightful experience with diverse flavors that cater to every palate.
Had an amazing time at this restaurant! The grilled fish was absolutely bursting with flavor—perfectly cooked, soaked in a rich, spicy broth with tons of garlic, peppers, and veggies. We picked the spicy level and it was just the right kick to wake up your taste buds! Loved the fun presentation on the hot plate, keeping everything warm and bubbling throughout the meal. The little details (like the sesame seeds, jalapeños, and vermicelli noodles) really made it feel authentic and satisfying. Also tried the crispy silkworm pupae—definitely an adventurous snack, but surprisingly addictive once you get into it! Cozy vibes, friendly staff, and solid menu. Highly recommend if you’re into bold flavors and something a little different from your usual dinner spot. 💥🐟🌶️
One of the best fried fish in town, their fish was very flavorful and not dry. The staffs were friendly and service was fast. Also their skewers were on point with other stores. One of their special is having two flavors, satisfy both spicy and non spicy perfect for groups that don’t like spicy and one loves spicy and can still share.
This was my first time trying grilled Chinese fish and I loved every aspect of it. It was very easy to order and customize the type of fish, spiciness, and toppings, on the tablet. We ordered the Qing Jiang fish with tripe in two flavors: Liu’s Homestyle (Hot) and Golden Soup Garlic (Medium). The colors were no indication of the spice but I would recommend at least the hot spiciness level if you’re a spice lover. I ended up loving Liu’s Homestyle more and regretted not adding more toppings. They tuck it under the fish so that it absorbs all the flavor and marinates in the sauce for as long as possible. I also loved that the fish was piping hot at all times since it was served over a flame the whole time. I was really craving a scallion pancake but it turned out to be just alright. It was pretty doughy and there was no flakiness. I didn’t try the other two entrees of beef noodle soup and steamed milk buns but I was told they were just alright. Based on my experience of the fish alone though, I loved it.
The place is amazing. We’re a foodie blog called hungryladyla and to be honest we were not expecting too much. We knew it was gonna be good, but oh lord did we love every single plate we were offered. For us the desserts were the winners of the night
I can't believe it took me six years to discover Liu Roast Fish! This spacious restaurant is beautifully decorated and has authentic Sichuan cuisine. Ordering from the iPad was a breeze, and our dishes arrived within minutes. The House Special Qing Jiang Fish was a standout packed with plenty of vegetables and, to our surprise, Spam!! We opted for the mild sweet and sour sauce, which had just the right amount of heat without being too spicy. The lamb and beef skewers were equally impressive, perfectly seasoned and utterly addictive. Their fried rice was so fluffy and the noodles were great too. I can't wait to come back and explore more of their menu!
This place serves some of the best grilled fish I’ve ever had! The fish is tender, flavorful, and perfectly cooked, with a rich and slightly spicy broth that’s packed with depth. The combination of green and red chili peppers, sesame seeds, and various side ingredients makes every bite delicious. The portion size is generous, and the flavors stay amazing until the last bite. The restaurant is clean, and the staff is friendly and attentive, making the whole dining experience even better. Highly recommend for anyone who loves grilled fish—definitely a must-try!
We got the Qing Jiang fish with mild golden soup garlic sauce and added lettuce and tofu! The fish was served fresh and piping hot, soaking up all the bold flavors from the sauce 😋 buttery fish + aromatic sauce + steamed rice calls for the PERFECT bite 🙌 for balance, we ordered skewers and vegetables, which were just as delicious. I can’t wait to come back and try their other sauce combos!!
. Perfect service and perfect food . We came here for a family meal, and it was an amazing experience! The food came out incredibly fast and was packed with flavor. There’s a lot of unique meat options on the menu, which made the meal even more enjoyable and memorable. Everything was cooked perfectly and tasted fantastic.
Liu Roast Fish is an absolute gem! The grilled fish here is cooked to perfection – tender, flavorful, and with just the right amount of char. The spice levels are customizable, so whether you prefer mild or fiery, they’ve got you covered. The side dishes were equally impressive, especially the garlic eggplant and crispy tofu. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. If you’re a fan of authentic Chinese grilled fish, this place is a must-try. I’ll definitely be coming back for more! Highly recommended!
This restaurant is fantastic! We love fish, and the Sichuan-style fish here is delicious. Our favorite is House Special Qing Jiang Fish with Chongqing sauce.
Reviews on Google are mystery until you come to find it out by yourself. Good flavor of all the dishes I order and great customer service. I had even to wait to get seated after 9pm on Tuesday.
✨When it’s James Wang approved, you know it’s going to be a fantastic meal in the SGV (San Gabriel Valley)✨ 老刘家 Liu Roast Fish” specializes in Chinese-style spicy hot pot, grilled fish and meat skewers. If you are a lover of spice like the numbing Sichuan peppercorns (like I am🫶🏼), then @liu_roastfish is definitely for you🔥 We had: 🥣Green Bean Soup, 🥔Lao Lius Potato Shreds, 🐟House Special Qing Jiang Fish, 🍢Beef Skewers (4), 🍢Lamb Skewers (4), 🍢Chicken skewers (4), 🍢Chicken skin (4)
Can’t get it this good in many places. Think…..roasted fish hotpot. Choose the type of fish, broth, and toppings. All stewed to perfection as you eat. Tried the original flavor with Qing Jiang fish. Fish was so tender, meat was plenty, sauce was so good! Don’t sleep on the skewers too, spicy cumin-y seasoning, my go-to is always the lamb.
Grilled fish is very tasty! Would recommend Qing Jiang fish in Liu's homestyle flavor, and mild spiciness level for those who can't eat spicy food.

Best Chinese food in L.A. Ice cold drinks!! Smells delicious 🌺🍜⛩️🎏🪭🏮
Today we had grilled fish at Liu Roast Fish (San Gabriel). The two of us ordered a mildly spicy black cod. The flavor was authentic, and the fish was very fresh. It had great color, aroma, and taste, really whetting the appetite. The staff were friendly, gave detailed explanations of the menu, and the environment was clean and comfortable. Whenever we come to Los Angeles, California, this is the restaurant we must visit to enjoy a feast.

Always in heart choice for roasted fish. The fish is with onions and sauce only. Ones need to add more sides into it to make it a full dish while there are some BBQ choices before the fish is ready. Generally good but sometimes the fish might not be fresh enough. Prices are higher than what it is before as the basic choice of a simple roasted fish is close to $50 before tax. However, the restaurant closed late at night as to be a nice choice for food like 22:30-23:00.
Located in the Hilton plaza, we came here to try their popular spicy fish. The food didn’t disappoint. We also tried the spicy mung bean noodles and lamb skewers which I recommend.
11/7/2024 - Liu Roast Fish is a Chinese Northern-East crusine restaurant while the main dish of Red Grouper dish belongs to Chengdu crusine. The taste of all four dishes is very good. Our Waiter is very friendly and helpful.

Flavor overall was ok, but pricy. Ordered chicken skin skewer and cartilage and those were fried and not grilled. This place is supposedly a bbq/grill place not fried food place. The lamb skewer was so so. Could have some more meat on it. Service was slow despite my family and I only being the only customers at the time. There was a strand of hair in the ja jang noodles.... The cooks need to wear hair nets. On top of that, not enough sauce for the noodles. They remade the noodles for is. Taking it home to eat though. Wouldn't really recommend this place and won't be coming back.
This is the most bone-riddled cod I have ever had in my entire life and the sauce was also below average. As the waiter mentioned it has the least amount of bones among all the fishes on the menu, I can’t imagine how worse the rest of their inventory can be. The bones in the photos were literally from only 3 small bites of the fish. After checking the photos again, I also doubt that that was in fact a cod because of the thin, needle-like bones. We sent the fish back and asked for some other dishes as replacement. After waiting for our replacements for 10 minutes, the waiter returned and informed us of the owner’s decision that we could not return the fish . Instead, we could only choose to either order another fish or get store credit. I can understand the fish being excessively bones out of the waiter’s estimation, but forcing me to pay for an undesired food was just absurd. STAY AWAY PEOPLE.
I wanted fufu and agusi, but I got raw fish and got sick because of it. The service was horrible and overall just bad.
Scam. Skewers come with little meat and cold. At this price, it is completely a robbery. Waiters were rude and rejected our request to send our food back to kitchen even though we tried to order something else.
This was the last stop of an amazing girls day out with a friend I haven’t seen in years. Really disappointed with this restaurant. Will never go again! I was told they don’t accept my credit card which is from a major bank and I never had any problem using it anywhere else. So I was forced to use cash. Luckily I had enough cash to pay for the check but not enough to pay the “optional” tip. We were stopped by the owner and a waitress before we left. They say the minimum tip is mandatory. In my understanding tips are for a happy dining experience with at least decent service, which we didn’t received. I had to raise my arm many times to be noticed to get water to begin with, a refill, adding more food and getting the check in the end. On top of that food is overpriced and mediocre. The mixed hotpot with so called 60 sticks were made from very cheap items and the price was $36.99. The grilled squid was too rubbery to chew and it wasn’t the squid tentacles we ordered. The overly salty cucumber side dish was $9.99. What a joke! My friend had to throw in a $10 note to get us to leave the restaurant for the mandatory tips. It was supposed to be my treat for her. I felt so bad. What a horrible finish for such a great day!!!
This review is not for their food but the service. I ordered from FanTuan and set 5:30pm as my pickup time. Got a notification said the food is ready around 4:45pm. I called the restaurant immediately to figure out what happened since it will take me 25min to be there place and I hate cold food. That’s why I set the pickup time as 5:30pm. A young male answered my called, giggled and said “oh we don’t look at the pickup time, we prep immediately as we get the order. Also your fishes are still eatable within one hour.” Great so I spend $100+ for two cold and “eatable” roasted fishes. I’ll just dispute this purchase and will not go back anymore.
DON’T COME!!!!!! I don’t know how they cut out all reviews and only leaves one fake good review. I must review it again! This restaurant is really BAD!!! The food is overpriced with bad quality!!! The roasted fish is dubbed price than other restaurants and just fish only!! So here you pay 90-100$ to get a less and nasty (overcooked)toasted fish. What a shameful scam!!! Trust me, you can get much more fresh roasted fish with vegetables and drinks just half of this price!! The pan under their toasted fish is super dirty!!
The new waitress had a terrible attitude. The skewers we received for the second time were 100% cold. The waitress said it was our fault and that we had left them cold. I was surprised that the skewers were 100% cold when they first arrived. I will not be coming back, even though I used to come here often and I liked the previous waitress.
