I’ve been here a couple times with some friends, and the curry is always delicious. I’ve ordered the Mapo Nasu Curry Udon and the Buta-Shabu Curry Rice, and they’ve left me feeling satisfied.
Ordered the tonkatsu bento and was surprised with the big and generous portions of everything. The tonkatsu was juicy, the salad tasted great! We also ordered takoyaki and chicken katsu curry and they were also so good and flavorful! They're also pretty affordable too compared to the other Japanese restaurants in West SJ.
Finding this spot after a long gap. Delicious in taste, excellent flavors and this will be my goto place for some fried chicken and Japanese curry. Great quantity, the dashi omlette was a bit disappointing but the chicken katsu curry rice was excellent. Definitely recommend this place for some delicious chicken curry rice.
The food is spectacular. Most places have very gloopy curry but this place nailed it. Perfect texture, make sure to add the vegetables to it too. The katsu was also perfectly crispy and cooked. As some of the other reviews mentioned, this place uses clover for all their ordering services and you will need your phone to order.
This is probably the best spot around if you're craving katsu curry. We came here on an early Friday afternoon and our group managed to grab a table right away. We then proceeded to order online through the QR code and waited about 40 minutes before our food was ready. The menu is fairly straight forward, with various katsu and curry options, and also several choices for add ons. I ordered the curry tonkatsu with a fried egg. The curry was very flavorful and the tonkatsu was tender and perfectly fried. Demiya will definitely be my go to place whenever I want katsu curry.
Great katsu and curry and food ing eneral. Your meat will be crispy and juicy. Your rice will be plush and hot. Your curry will be tasty and curry. Then afterwards treat yourself to 7leaves. Reminder to order ahead for optimal experience (even when dining in store). There is a parking lot in front so should be easy to park here.
Demiya is my go-to restaurant whenever I get the craving for some delicious curry and katsu. I can't say enough good things about the quality of their food. Their curry is flavorful and not too spicy, which works out well in my favor since I don't have any spice tolerance to speak of. Nevertheless, if you'd like your curry with a bit more kick, the spice level can be increased to your taste. Along with their curry, you get a serving of fluffy white rice and your choice of a protein. My personal favorites are the chicken katsu and mench katsu (deep fried burger), which are also so so crispy providing the perfect bite. Personally, I always find myself with enough food to last for two meals, so that's also a big plus in my book. Of note, I've only ordered online and picked up in store, so I can't really speak to the dine-in experience (or the in-person wait times); however, their online ordering process is very straightforward and easy to navigate. After placing your order, the Clover platform will give you a estimated time for pick up, and when you get to the restaurant you can walk right on in and grab your take-out bag from the counter. If you like well-made curry and katsu, then I highly recommend giving Demiya a try!
A small store, order at the counter. Let them know when you get a seat so they will start preparing your food, then they will call your name again. Quick turnover of tables, seat yourself. Food is hot and fresh, good portion sizes! Curry is smooth, not too spicy at all. Card only restaurant, the parking lot is a little busy but not too crazy.
The best Japanese curry in the south bay area. I recommend adding the steamed vegetables, and "hot" is a mild spicy if you want to add a little kick. However, it is very popular, so expect 1 hour or more to wait in line to order and then for your or your to be cooked. Also, good luck getting seating to eat there if you can.
Demiya – A Casual Spot for Japanese Curry Lovers in San Jose Tucked into a modest storefront in San Jose, Demiya is a popular local curry house known for its Japanese-style curry rice, udon noodles, donburi, and teishoku sets. While the shop has built a strong following, especially for takeout, the dine-in experience is more of a casual, fast-food format than a full-service restaurant. The dining space is compact, with wooden two-person tables that can be pushed together for small groups, but the layout isn’t ideal for larger gatherings. The décor is minimal but thoughtful—featuring Japanese artwork, a teapot or two, and a few playful touches like Hello Kitty plush toys. Demiya’s menu offers a wide range of protein options including tonkatsu, chicken katsu, karaage, menchi (ground meat cutlet), tofu, nasu (eggplant), beef shabu, croquettes, and ebi (shrimp). A spicy level could be chosen with the curry option. I believe the curry rice with the fried protein could be high in calories. You can customize your meal further with toppings like mushrooms, veggies, omelet, egg, and sausage. While the variety is impressive, the prices run high considering the dishes are relatively simple and home-style in nature. Ordering is done at the counter, and food is picked up once your name is called. Self-service water is available, and the dine-in staff presence is minimal—likely due to the team’s focus on prepping a steady stream of to-go orders. During lunch hours, even on weekdays, be prepared for a short wait in line. If you're looking for quick, customizable Japanese comfort food, Demiya delivers on flavor and variety, though not necessarily on atmosphere or service. Best suited for a solo visit or casual lunch, especially if you're a fan of Japanese curry done right.
This is a must try spot for Japanese curry in the South Bay. It’s a classic for a weeknight or even weekend meal. The rich savory curry sauce paired with crispy battered chicken and a side of white rice 👌. The chicken katsu /tonkatsu breading was not too thick and doughy while the meat was juicy and tender. The pickles on the side and spicy level (can be adjusted) adds to the dish depth and texture. Such a humbling meal yet it hits the spot every time!
Order and pay upfront at the counter, then grab a seat. They’ll call your order# and you can collect your meal. Simple and efficient all by yourself. Tried the tonkatsu curry rice and chicken curry rice, both tasty. Meat is thick and tender, coating’s crispy but not oily though the curry sauces sure to be on the salty side, so dipping is not as carefree as I’d like. Still it’s nod bad for a quick bite when you’re specifically craving for a Japanese curry dish (eg rice, udon).
Tonkatsu Curry tasted great. The thick cut fried pork tasted very tender. You will need to place the order and pay at the front desk; there is no waiter to serve. Almost everything is taken care by yourself, such as getting the water, receiving the food orders at the front desk, removing the tray and plates/bowls to the collection shelf in the back, etc. Also, it took quite a while to receive the order.
Wow the curry here is amazing. I got the chicken katsu curry and the chicken was so tender and juicy. The panko breading was perfectly crisp I was extremely impressed. A lot of places have really dry chicken katsu. The chicken karaage here was also amazing. Super tender and the dipping sauce was super yummy. Definitely get the sunny side up egg on your curry if you can spare the extra 2 dollars.
I think if you like curry that’s thinner and a bit less strong in flavor, this would be the right place for you. However, I like curries that are thicker and much more intense. Also, the karaage and katsu are lacking in flavor. Although the fry on the katsu is perfect. The staff are fantastic, and the space is clean and neat. Good place for meeting up with a friend.
This was the most disappointing dining experiences we’ve had in the Bay Area. We waited more than 40 minutes to be served at a less crowded restaurant. The rice omelet was particularly poor: the rice tasted bad and had a soggy, watery texture that made it unpleasant to eat. What was most frustrating was the response from the staff. When we shared our feedback, neither the server nor the chef showed any effort to acknowledge or address our concerns. Although the restaurant claims to offer “Japanese-style” cuisine, we could not find any elements that reflected the quality or care typically associated with Japanese food. Unfortunately, this is not a place we would choose to return to.
