This place is the heart of the Japan Town community. It's a meeting place for locals, it's a hub for anyone who has a dog, and the family that run it are some of the most wonderful people I've had the pleasure of meeting. Anyone who stops in only once might just see a local coffee shop, but anyone who comes back and spends some time there will see a thriving neighborhood hub.

☕ Reliable Coffee in a Historic Setting Located in the heart of San Jose’s Japantown, Roy’s Station is a staple for a reason. I stopped in recently for a coffee, and it was a perfectly good experience. While the coffee didn't necessarily blow me away as the "best ever," it was a good, consistent cup that hit the spot. They serve Verve Coffee Roasters beans, which are high quality, and the baristas seem to know what they are doing. It’s the kind of place where you can count on a solid caffeine fix without any major surprises, which sometimes is exactly what you need. 🥐 Tempting Pastries and Local Bites Although I only came in for a drink this time, I spent some time eyeing their food display. The pastries looked really good—they were well-presented and looked incredibly fresh. I noticed they carry a variety of items ranging from classic croissants to more unique treats like Korean garlic buns and even spam musubi. It was tough to walk away without a snack, and based on how quickly they seemed to be moving, they are clearly a hit with the locals. I’ll definitely make it a point to try one of their baked goods on my next visit. 🏁 Unique Atmosphere and the Japantown Vibe The coolest part about Roy’s is the building itself. It’s a converted vintage gas station, and they’ve done an amazing job keeping that retro character alive. Outdoor Seating: There is a huge patio area that is perfect for people-watching in Japantown. It’s pet-friendly, too, which adds to the community feel. The Crowd: Be aware that it gets very crowded, especially on sunny mornings. Because it’s so popular, there can be a significant wait for your order, but the atmosphere makes the time pass quickly. Great Location: Being right on the corner of 5th and Jackson makes it the perfect starting point for exploring the rest of the neighborhood’s shops and museums. 👍 Final Verdict: A Staple San Jose Experience I’m giving Roy’s Station 4 stars on Google. It’s a really good overall experience that combines history with a great neighborhood atmosphere. While the popularity means you might have to deal with a line and a wait for a table, the vibe of the place makes it worth it. Whether you are a local or just visiting Japantown, it’s a must-stop for a reliable coffee and a great view of the local scene. I'll be back for a pastry next time :)

After a long time, a coffee shop has brought me real joy. Been to, a bunch of coffee shops of lately, and been disappointed with one thing or another but this was a real welcome surprise. Well, this rating is close to 4.5 what it is not perfect five because I will doc points for the quality of pastry. Let’s start with the good things first. The coffee was really good, and you could tell that they use good quality beans. The staff were welcoming and friendly, and the service was extremely quick. The ambience is great and there is a lot of indoor as well as outdoor seating. On a nice bright sunny day, it is a great place to just sit outside and grab some coffee. Prices are great and they have a good selection. My only complain would be that the pastry is just average. The almond croissant filling was overly sweet, and the croissant was not very flaky. On the other hand, the chocolate chip cookie was extremely crispy and did not have a soft gooey interior. I will definitely be back here and bring more friends!

Nice small coffee place with retro interior decor. The outdoor patio is spacious, but they could stand to have some more umbrellas outside on sunny afternoons. They carry a good sized selection of various syrups, teas, pastries, and savory bites. Their coffee is... just alright. They brew with Verve beans here and they use the Sermon blend for their espresso drinks, which is a very fruity blend. I've tried them a few times on separate weeks and their iced lattes always had very strong notes of savory soy sauce, which I found kind of off-putting. Ultimately, the coffee is not my jam, but it's still a great place in Japantown to sit with a nice snack and chill.

Roy’s Station Coffee & Tea is a quaint and charming local coffee shop in Japan Town. Staff are friendly and decor is artsy and quirky, features gas station, train, and urban memorabilia. They have an outdoor patio which is perfect for coffee, tea, and/or a snack outside, especially when the weather is nice. I especially enjoy the vegan, nut free, and gluten free brownies they carry paired with an iced coffee. Tea and coffee variety is excellent and they also have smoothies and juices (in the cold box, no juice bar). They have Verve coffee beans for purchase and store branded sweatshirts and mugs, and framed photography for sale by local artists. Worth stopping by and checking out.

Stopped by Roy's while I was in the area. Tried their dirty chai latte and that was delicious. Also ordered their spinach and chard pastry which was good. The mocha was okay. Service was really fast even though they had a huge line. They do not allow dogs inside so if you have a pet you have to stay outdoors. All in all a good place to grab quick breakfast and coffee.

The mini pastry pies are phenomenal, some of the best cafe snacks I have had. I absolutely recommend going for those. However, I urge the owner to inspect the quality of their coffee and expresso beans and retrain/test their baristas because my partner and I have gotten 4 different drinks and they have all been extremely watered down and sour (iced coffee, chai, spiced mocha, and carmilito). The spiced mocha had way too much powder on it to the point where it felt like do the cinnamon challange even after mixing. The first time we went we hoped it was an off day or accident. But the second time was worse to the point where we couldn't finish our drinks. I have been a barista and it seems like it is most likely a quality/preparation issue. There is no reason the iced coffee should be worse than instant or free hotel coffee. Additionally the chai was so bland it just tasted like sour water. Again the atmosphere and pies are amazing, but it has coffee in the name and that is where they lack the most.

I’m so sad to have to post a negative review. I love local coffee places like this, but I’m shocked to see that no one is commenting about how the coffee tastes like motor oil. Even worse - I got an iced coffee and it was so bad I got a hot coffee (hoping maybe it was brewed fresh?) and the taste was exactly the same. Unsure if this is maybe a me issue or the coffee is a bad batch this morning, but I can only describe the coffee as acidic, bitter, and overall hard to drink. I couldn’t have more than a few sips of either drink. The spam musubi and the korean garlic bun were pretty good! My friend also said the chai was alright.
