I always get take out here, but when I come in to pick it up they often have live music playing. They're super quick with phone orders, it only takes about 10 minutes from when I call until when I pick it up. And they have never messed up my order once. I also want to add that most BBQ places don't have beef ribs, but this place does (which my husband loves)!
The second I walked in the door I knew I was in for a treat. The menu has the same vibe as the South Carolina BBQ joints I grew up visiting. They even have hushpuppies and sweet tea! There are a lot of meat choices, including beef ribs, pulled pork, and baby back ribs. By far, my favorite item was the baby back ribs. From what I could tell they have one, and only one, BBQ sauce....but it is fantastic. Oh, and you should definitely try the pickles.
Been here many times. People are nice. Food is really good. Some nights they have a live band. Enjoy going here. They have earned the 5 stars!
This is a great BBQ joint! It's perfect for just a couple of people or a family get together. The food is fantastic. They have a wide variety of food for many price ranges. If you're a fan of baby back ribs I highly recommend them over anything. Don't forget to try their house made sauce!
Their meat products are of the highest quality. I've been coming to this joint since I was 20 years old. I'm almost 60 now. It's still enjoyed just like if it was the first time they give finger looking good a new meaning.
Quite enjoyed this place. Pulled pork sandwich was moderately peppery, which I like but my kid didn't. Ribs come uncut, which is kinda cool. Hush puppies are nice and crispy. Mac salad and coleslaw were both good.
My favorite barbecue place in the Bay Area. Their sweet tea and barbecue sauce reminds me of Tennessee. I like their ribs and pulled pork among other things. Pay in cash for a small discount. Ample parking.
The pulled pork plate with coleslaw & garlic bread was excellent. Also, the hush puppies were delicious!! Enjoyed the whole experience. Would go there again, even tho prices a little high, but so is every other place now a days!!
Good food, the ribs stick to the bone a lot, strange atmosphere, but all around pretty good.
Great people work here, awesome customer service. The place is so cool because of the decorations it’s like you’re walking into a midwest dimension. And the food, NEVER disappoints. I get the pulled pork sandwich and a side of hushpuppies and they’re always so so good
These are the best beef ribs anywhere in San Jose. The only thing I can say about the atmosphere is I wish they had the trains running like it used to be
Got a combo of half rack ribs coleslaw and potatoe salad for the wife. For myself i got a whole chicken combo with two sides of beans and both garlic bread and they gave me 3 extra sauces of barbeque. It was fire and worth everything. Even the doctors at the hospital said it was smelling good in the unit. The wife and i will definitely coming back! Great food great service.
Their BBQ meats are just amazingly good. The meat in the sliced beef sandwich just melts in your mouth. Good variety, many options on the menu. Their home made sauce is excellent.
The best pulled pork, it just melts in your mouth and has great flavor just by itself. Normally I am a beef brisket person, but this place made me a changed person! Not to say their brisket is bad, their pulled pork is just the best! The live music at the outdoor seating is fun to listen to and gives the place a nice feeling. I am in love with the pulled pork!
So then the dude slaps a Franklin down on the bar and proclaims in a loud obnoxious voice that Sam's Bar-B-Que is the best BBQ in the bay area...and here's a 100 bucks that says so! Well, I've had BBQ all up and down the state, and I've got some favorites in Oaktown, so I went over and "Oh Yeah! You're on...I scooped up the Franklin and he gave me directions to get there, and off I went...just me, he stayed there with his chest all puffed out, proud as a new dad, and I had some Amazing food at Sam's BBQ. He never showed up, and I just wonder how long it took for him to realize he gave me a 100 bucks to go eat BBQ. ☆☆☆☆☆
Sam’s bbq is my top pick for bbq restaurants in the San Jose area. Service is very good and food is very tasty. We had the ribs, brisket and hot links plates and all were very good. Ribs were cooked right and flavorful without needing bbq sauces. Brisket was tender and not dry, and hot links were not too hot and has nice consistency. Price is comparable to other bbq restaurants in San Jose area. For these 2 plates; each with garlic bread and 2 sides (no drinks), it was about $45 total. If I have to nitpick, the garlic bread didn’t have “just out of the oven” taste... not sure if we’re there later in the evening and that’s why. Overall, very good and will come back again.
Rustic homey place serving authentic Carolina pulled pork barbeque and delicious ribs. Smaller plates are available like sandwiches if you're not too hungry. Fresh made daily in house macaroni and potato salad and coleslaw are all great accents to the awesome meat. Love it here.
Delicious bbq any day of the week! We've been going to this place for over a decade!! (And it's always just as yummy) It's a great family friendly restaurant with some live music on the weekend usually local bands, quirky and fun. High quality meats and plenty of sides to pick from
I love the bbq here. And it's outdoor patio is a great place to eat and listen to live music in the warm spring/summer months. Today our group had the blue cheese burger, baby back ribs, fried zucchini... All delicious
I had the full slab of pork ribs. If you know the Flintstones cartoons, you will recognize the opening credits where the waitress brings a tray of ribs to the Flintstones' car and the car tips over, we'll that's what almost happened to our table. Those ribs where stacked high and full of delicious tender meat. I can't recommend it enough. My meal came with macaroni salad, which was also delicious. I took more than half of the ribs home with me and had them as leftovers the next day. 😋
One of the best bone-in rib-eye that I've had. For $26 you get a large cut of great food cooked to order. Add the sides and you have yourself a meal that even my large self almost can't put down. Usually have mine cooked medium rare but I do switch it up and found the flavor is savory no matter what. Despite how busy they usually are I never wait long for my food. Pair it with a beer and it's off to food coma haha
Haven't been here for a couple yearsqfter moving out of the Bay but it's still as good as the last time. Pork shoulder, ribs, Mac salad and sweet tea are THE BEST. They added a bar and menu screens. Didn't see the train working, though.
Holy beef rib!!! Been coming here for a few years now, and hands down our favorite BBQ spot in the Bay Area. The beef rib last week was something out of this world, unbelievable size and smoked perfectly. The brisket was juicy and excellent too. Really can’t go wrong with any meat option here! Everyone working there is amazing and this is truly a local gem that I will forever keep on supporting. Their combo platter with 3 meats has got to be one of the best deals in town (it’s not cheap, but I think the value matches the price — don’t forget the cash discount!). Consistently good food and service, plus their new happy hour from 4-6 for $5 pints is awesome. Certainly will be back!!!
Came in at 5pm on a Thursday. Parking no problem in the free parking lot, and plenty of seats to go around. Food was excellent, loved the garlic bread and to me the meats didn't even need sauce and was good enough as is. Service was good, staff were plenty friendly. Atmosphere was nice, was relaxed with plenty of casual conversations and people around.
9/11/2024 @ 1pm. Got full rack beef ribs 7 bones, meat does not fall off bones, flavorful. Got full rack pork 13 bones, not as dry, meat does not fall off bones. Like pork ribs more. 7/21/2024 @ 1pm. One of the oldest BBQ restaurant in San Jose. They have Friday and Saturday prime rib special. Not impressed with chili, almost not beef, all brans
Great place to get lunch and dinner. 2 people $90 and trust me the amount of food you get for $90 is more than enough. Real smoke bbq and the food is incredible. The atmosphere is phenomenal. Real kickback place and they play the blues. Only thing is that the need better knives for cutting up the meat. Lol! 😀
We had family over and ordered ahead for pickup, and they got everything perfect. We’ve been comin here ever since I was a kid, and it’s become part of our network of places we love to frequent, and for the most part everyone has their favorite item memorized. Mine is the 1/2 chicken or the ribs….mmmm…after last nights dinner, I wanted to take a few moments to say bravo to the folks at Sams who have consistently made wonderful meals not only for our family n friends, but the entire community. Makes sense why you’re always voted best bbq in San Jose. Plus…bomb bbq sauce. One Love!
GET in here!!!! The best best best BBQ that I have had in many years. I grew up around the pits of north carolina and I can confidently say that this has been the best meal I have had in San Jose. Went with the pulled pork sandwich, it is huge. Really unique pickles and a macaroni salad really rounded out the plate. Got a side of fries and they were steak style thick cut. Incredible flavor in the meat and the sauce, well I would drink it from the bottle. It has a great menu above the register and has a kids menu. I will be back to try all of the rest and I am kicking myself for not eating here sooner.
The bbq is delicious, I've been going to Sam's Bbq for years now, and every time I go, it's always good. Thank you Sam's for the great service

Great place for live music. Check it out!!! They play Tuesdays and Wednesdays.\nThe patio is very nice.
Excellent food had brisket and was so delicious and dessert apple pie with ice cream so delicious service was great clean place a must return. Watch basketball on big screen TV.

My wife and I have been going here for years, as the food here is always great! service is great as well. We usually get the half pound chuckburger with chedder, steak fries or potatoe salad. Best …
I had the beef ribs platter with macaroni salad and chili. I guess it was unfair of me to apply Texas BBQ standards. The chili was mostly beans, which would have been fine if the called it BBQ beans or the like. The ribs had good smoke, good halo, enviable glaze, and good depth of flavor in the bark. But sadly they were rushed and didn't have time to render the connective tissues so the meat would pull away from the bone. I tasted the sauce on a spoon and it was delicious. The sides were tasty. It is not a bad place, and may have been a rough Friday night, but I can barely give it 4 stars. Maybe I should have tried the brisket or pork . It looked good on other people's plates.
Food was yummy and fairly quick to be served. Prices were decent for the amount of meat you ordered. They clean the inside tables quickly thought the outside ones take a little more time. We couldn't finish our meal so we took it home. Definitely not as good the next day, much dryer and chewier.
I have had many a meal at Sam's. I even listened to some funky bluegrass and made memories at Sam's. Unfortunately this time around there were issues with the lack of staffing. Overall good food and worth a try...
We ordered platters , i got half beef ribs but i thought that was not as good as baby back ribs that my husband got. the platters come with garlic bread and two other sides. i did not like their chili but liked the macaroni salad . overall good for ribs . i will return to this restuarant 🙂
I'll be honest the barbecue was only okay. The ribs were a little tough and everything just could have been cooked a little slower and a little longer, but that's a very technical opinion. Outside of that, everything else was fantastic. The service and the atmosphere was exciting and fun. The staff was friendly and on top of things. And to boot there was a live band that was amazing. This was a fun place.
(online take out order) Good baby back ribs. The brisket talked ok but it was dry and they gave me lean instead of fatty even though that was my order. The beef ribs were tough, I suspect they were over cooked... (They also tasted ok)
We have been here a few times and have found the BBQ to be adequate. The ribs are flavorful but always seem to be a bit dry. The bbq sauce helps. The bbq meats are good. The interior is decorated in San Jose historical pictures, old west and country. It is almost always clean and tidy.
I have been wanting to review this place for a long time but being partially a vegetarian, I thought it would be wrong to judge this place based off what I have eaten/tried so far. So I decided to put down a review based on what my husband thinks of this place. To be more accurate, we took my brother to this place to get a validation for my husband's choice! OK Soo..If my husband had his way, this is where we would be eating every day of the week!! He loves loves loves this place (trust me, those are way less loves than his appreciation of this place). Ambience and Staff: The place is cosy and nice, the cutest part is that there is a toy train constantly running along the sides of the roof (Choo Choo!!) The staff is friendly. Everytime we have visited, there was not much of a line and getting seated is pretty easy too. The restaurant has an outdoor as well an indoor seating, so you can pick what's your comfort zone. Ordering: Placing an order is pretty easy too, you go to the counter and get your bill. The cashier will give you your order number, you take that and pick a seat for yourself. They bring your order to the table. Food: For their vegetarian burger, I would give them a 2/5, the veggie patty was tasteless, there were no sauce inside the burger and it felt really dry. I got the burger with side of macaroni which was great! Brisket: 10/10 My brother and husband both got the brisket and they would not let me rate it any less than 10/10. The meat was great, cooked well, the portion was great and the sides were amazing too. This is probably the most popular dish as most of the tables within my vision. Needless to say, I will definitely go again and maybe this time around I can give their chicken a try!

Great bbq and even better music. \n\nLive music always makes the bbq taste better. You need to try this place.
One of the few places I know of that serves beef ribs. Unfortunately, mine had more fat than meat. Probably won't order those again. Great smokey flavor though! Pulled pork sandwiches were very good. Garlic bread would have been perfect if it hadn't been cold. Fries were good, but wasn't a fan of the chili. Service was OK, but I have a feeling we weren't seeing them at their best that night. Willing to try them again.
Ok so I'm driving my girlfriend home last week and told her as we pass by that we would try them out next. So last night was the nite and the food was absolutely fantastic. We got a combo plate, which is a little bit of everything.and comes with two sides. The waitress told me it was enough for two however I ordered an extra piece of bread and a side of chili beans. This wonderful recommended plate is 29.00 and the sides brought my total to 49.00. This is for a single order and two extra sides, which really, a little larger portion of the original sides would have been more price tag friendly. So folks, plan on spending anywhere from 75.00 to 100.00 for dinner for two. Is it worth it? Well, yes. I would have to say the food is worth it. I wouldn't consider this place a treat rather than a regular spot to take your family. The place was full despite the hike in prices. I took it to go but I did see plenty of seating. Have a good time and enjoy.
Overall pretty middle of the road Barbeque place, I would likely not go again. Customer service: I could not locate a doordash account so we ended up calling to place our order. The women was very nice and said it would only take ten minutes to have our order ready. Food: We ordered a full rack of beef ribs along with the sampler plate. We got the meals so our sides were macaroni salad, potato salad and we both also got fries (Not listed as a option on the website). The fries reminded me of frozen fries you heat up along with the potato and macaroni salad reminded me of the grocery store so we really didn't eat much of those. Meat wise The brisket was really great. The pork ribs were ok, the hot link was ok. The Beef ribs were pretty tough to eat, very chewy. The garlic bread was good and they provided a lot of BBQ sauces so that was awesome as well. Personally I might be too picky for BBQ, I really like ribs that are tender and fall off the bone. I think Smoking pig and Famous Dave's have better BBQ but nothing beats my moms ribs yet. Still on the hunt. Atmosphere: We did do a pickup order but personally I love small places like this. Feels very homey and inviting.
Food was ok. A bit pricey for serving size. Server was nice but the food wasn't the best bbq that I had.
Pros: The order was ready on time to pick up. Plenty of sauce and whatever needed for take out. BBQ beef ribs were delicious, beef brisket was soft and yummy. Cons: vegetarian burger was awful. Chicken was very old, like it was cooked and warmed up couple of items before; too hard in some parts that I had to cut them with knife and throw away. Other parts were also too hard. Even the salsa inside the chicken looked more than just cooked.
The meat is cooked very well! Super tender! The bbq sauce was a little flat in flavor to me. I really don't understand why every CA bbq place I've been to so far has garlic bread and no cornbread. Must be a West coast thing. They had a live band playing, which was a really fun touch! They also have some vegetarian choices, which is rare for a BBQ joint!
Fantastic service! Love the atmosphere here, feels like a museum of treasures! The food cools down quite fast. The brisket wasn’t bad. It doesn’t melt in your mouth and is a little tough.
I had half rack ribs with chili and Cole slaw. Chili was just poorly cooked beans and Cole slaw was ok like. Ribs were good but a bit over cooked. Sauce was great. Garlic bread was good. Overall there are much better BBQ joints out there (like South Winchester BBQ)
I'd give 3.75 stars. Portions are good. This is the sampler of 3 choices of meat (baby back, beef ribs & chicken). The garlic bread was flavorful with a good crisp. Sides of macaroni & chili were average but good. Backdrop - I am particular with BBQ. Good BBQ in my opinion is in the seasoning dry rub. The sauce is a "bonus/perk" to add more flavor but shouldn't rely on it to taste good. Overall - BBQ was smoked good (not burnt) but lacking in flavor. It seemed salt was the biggest flavor I tasted versus seasoning. Lastly, niether ribs do not fall off the bone.
There meat is always fantastic but they do not salt and pepper their burgers - they're usually pretty alright but they forgot the lettuce tomatoes and onions on my and my coworkers burgers. When I called and asked if they could add salt and pepper or give it to me on the side I had to repeat myself four times. Great joint, I'm definitely coming back but it was pretty frustrating to look forward to a nice burger at Sam's all my work day - spend forty bucks total for myself and my coworker and then not get what we wanted.
Wanted some BBQ for lunch and this was the nearby choice. Rustic western feel. U order first and pay at counter. They deliver to u at table. The picture was about $42. I’m not a billionaire (yet) and I know BBQ ain’t cheap but I think it could have a little more in the portions imo. My fave Smoked Out still charges $22 and I get 2 thick brisket slices - plus very flavorful. Taste was average here. Just working thru my BBQ fix - will post other places. Summary 3.5 stars.
A pretty nice bbq place in the area! The beef brisket was a bit dry... But their highlights here were the chili and garlic bread were pretty nice too! The fries were soggy though... The atmosphere is pretty cool! Theres a train track that runs around the top of the building! I wonder if trains run around there... Service was very quick and straightforward with the pricing!
I really love the decor of the place. There were many meat selections. Portion is generous. I got the brisket and sampler of beef ribs, baby back ribs, and pulled pork. The brisket was half moist and half dry. The ribs were juicy but the meat didn't fall off the bones. The pull pork was okay. Overall the meats were okay. It needed the restaurant BBQ sauce to help it taste delicious; otherwise it is a little bland. The sides were okay. The potato and macaroni salads has too much dressing. The chili was nice. $$$ place.

I don't eat BBQ a lot but I do LOVE ribs. These were perhaps some of the most unsatisfying BBQ ribs I've ever had. Low quality meat on the baby back ribs. I also ordered the chicken leg quarters a la carte. I'm not exaggerating when I say that was the worst BBQ chicken I've ever had in my life! They were very overcooked n had very little flavor. The potato salad wasn't any better. The only good thing I had was the garlic bread. I had high hopes cuz I've never been here. I trusted the good reviews on this place but I just wasted $40. Idk if I ever wanna give it another try either. I don't make it habit to talk down on local businesses but man that was BAD.
It was the WORST meal I have had in 10 years! I tried the sampler Combo ($45.00) -- The food was cold , like it had been sitting for weeks, tasteless and pathetic! Armadillo Willys beats this place by a long shot!!! There is one in Sunnyvale!
Ribs were hard to chew. And potato salad / macaroni salad tasted like fridge. Bbq tasted like generic store bought bbq.
My friends and I were excited to try this place, but our experience was not great. The food was very bland all around and my chicken was very dry. I was sad to pay so much for the low quality. One of the ladies who works there kept coming over to our table, interrupting our conversation, and bombarding us with random talk… it was very uncomfortable. Restaurant looks pretty neat on the inside, so that was nice! Bathroom was dirty.
Got the sampler platter ( baby back ribs, brisket, and pork) with chili and macaroni. Also, a side of hushpuppies. Nothing was very good. The ribs had to be pulled from the bone with effort and were very dry. The brisket was incredibly tough and flavorless. The pork was fatty, chewy, and also lacked flavor. The sides seemed like they were premade, packaged items. Probably the best thing on the plate was the garlic bread, but that didn't really even go with the meal. The restaurant was nice and homey but needs a deep cleaning - sauce splatters on the wall and pictures, sticky tables, and flies everywhere.
Brisket was like leather. Not tasty at all:(
Food is amazing. Dining room is okay. However, DO NOT ever sign up to receive their text messages. It doesn't matter how many times you reply stop, Block and delete. They will text you from 1000 different numbers. At this point, I don't think I'll ever go back them and eat because they won't remove my phone number from their marketing list. Off to the FTC to report them.
I got the worst food poisoning after eating here. I had terrible diarrhea and vomited for 2 days after eating here. I arrived here around 8pm but I guess they start closing the restaurant around 8pm and not 9pm because people were cleaning up and putting stuff away as if they were closing but the sign said open. The cashier was taking the mats off the floor to I guess clean it and I should have taken that as a hit not to eat there. If the kitchen was closed I wish they would have told me that so I could have avoided getting so sick. I ordered the beef slice sandwich with chili and fountain drink. I had about two to three bites of the chili but I ate the entire sandwich which I think is what got me sick. It was tasty but dry and I had to add a lot of barbecue sauce to it. I'm not sure if it was the meat or the barbecue sauce they gave me but I do know I woke up with the worst cramps of my life and explosive diarrhea and vomiting (which is very rare for me, I've had food poisoning before but never threw up from it). The atmosphere with quaint and there were a lot of older people there and I thought it would be a great spot to bring my family but I question the cleanliness of their kitchen and why they served me food that was not safe to eat. But definitely think twice before going here especially if it's after 8:00 p.m.
Food was horrible. Service was bad. I spent more than $100 buying a full rack of pork ribs, beef ribs, and whole chicken. Everything was way too overcooked - DRY as a rock - had to give the beef ribs and chicken to my dogs to eat. BBQ should be juicy and flavorful!!! The pit master should be fired in my opinion. Meat was old and not fresh off grill. Sides were super tiny, a joke. Also, the place is being served and run by bunch of high school kids that are not informed and not customer focused. Do yourself a favor and avoid this rundown place with horrible food. I won’t be returning and they’ve lost a customer for life. Good luck.
Ribs were tough and dried out. The opposite of "fall off the bone." Had potato salad and mac salad as sides and they were decent. The bbq sauce is delicious, but with it all over my fingers it was hard to wipe away the tears of disappointment from the poorly cooked baby back ribs. I will never visit this place again - $37 for a full rack of torture.
Not worth a try. Brisket sandwich is essentially roast beef. And not good roost beef! Save your money and time and skip this place.
The staff is hard to understand The beef brisket was more like jerky than barbecue. Their beef ribs dry and they are nothing more than just big bones with the little meat left after boning a rib roast All in $80 wasted
The owners know that they're running a bbq scam. They don't actually smoke or make all of their meats in house. The last brisket I had was cooked in an oven and then put over some smoke. Even the "buttermilk battered" tenders are simply cooked frozen straight out of a bag. The burgers are frozen patties from a restaurant wholesaler somewhere far away. We use to love Sam's. But, what they're doing there now is shameful and disrespectful to their dad, the founder. The servers and manager mean well, but they also know this not legit bbq by any basic standards.
I'm not a fan of bbq outside of what I do at home, but we were going to support the entertainment... The chicken was pretty dry and tastless, beef ribs had pretty good flavor but almost no meat, brisket was bland. I read some pretty glowing reviews of the garlic bread, I would say it was one step above Safeway package garlic bread, nothing compared to my own. Chili beans were probably the best thing we had, but I think I can buy better from a can at Safeway.. I don't think I will ever eat at another "BBQ" place ever. Sad
This is the one place where I wish I could’ve given some negative stars. We came here on Sunday afternoon after church. I should have realized that coming to a barbecue place and not getting the aroma of barbecue is a big red flag. The place itself is really nice. The ambience is pretty good but the tables were sticky and I could see a fly stick to the table. It’s that bad. The food was horrible, except for the ribs nothing was hot. It was literally cooler than room temperature. The only thing good was the garlic bread. The regular bread was worse than Subway. Service was horrible as well, asked for sauce and waited and waited more and had to go get it myself. The worst $150 ever spent. Spare your time, spare your dollar go somewhere else.
