Opinions de El Crutón San Juan
We were looking for a good lunch spot and followed the locals. No regrets! Al Pastor and carne asada tacos were excellent. We loved the fresh pineapple (pina) juice and horchata!
This has got to be best deal for money in the area. My brother in law are out in the area on business. He basically is trying every combo over the last week. The bakery is also quite good. Cakes and pastries tasty like they have just the right amount of sugar to keep slightly sweet and enjoyable.
A friend was showing me around San Juan Capistrano and this place is a hidden gem for good tacos. Each taco is about $4-5 unless you get street tacos (smaller) $2-$3. This has existed for about a decade according to my friend TB. She says it was cheaper back then, but inflation and the development of the San Juan Capistrano area has really increased the prices. The two tacos I got today: (1) El pastor - the spicy marinated meat lit a fire in my stomach in the good way (2) Carne asada - the meat was generously provided I was asked whether I wanted cilantro and onions with my tacos and I said a resounding yes! I was incredibly full with just two tacos. It’s a filling meal. TB and I came around 10-11 am which is a bit early for lunch hahaha but this place opens at 6 am! We still had to stand in line for 10 min. That’s how much of a consistent presence of customers and service is provided. There are a lot of people working to prepare the food for you, so I’ve been so blessed. You’ll be provided a receipt and a number. In a sense, it reminded me of a pastrami sandwich store I visited in NYC except this time it’s for tacos in Southern California. Hone in on your Spanish so that you’ll be able to recognize your number when they call it out too! There’s much to look around and explore just within the restaurant. I was so tempted to order a juice and pastries, but God knew I wouldn’t be able to handle everything. I can’t wait to come again another day. There are tables outside that you can sit to chat with friends, which is what TB and I did. God bless you all!
Fast, delicious, authentic and good pricing.. what more do you want?! The birria is bomb.com
A legit and affordable Mexican joint in South Orange county. There are a lot of ready-made dishes as well as your usual antojitos: tacos, tortas, quesadillas, etc. I came in with 4 adults and a child. There was a little bit of a line but line moved fast, waiting for the food is what takes the longest. After you order at the food counter, you wait for your number to be called. Once called, you get all your items and you can order drinks if you want to. We were hungry so we over ordered. This is what we had: 1. Pozole: the soup was so tasty! They provide you with a small container of dry red peppers and oregano. Use it. It gives a nice kick to the soup. The meat was tender and the homini perfectly cooked. The ratio of homini to meat was just right. 2. Pork tamal: the masa was not the best I've had but it was still tasty. I like my pork tamales to have chunks of meat but the one I got was more like a meat mush. 3. Lengua plate: delicious! Came with a side of rice and beans. 4. Cabeza tacos: needed a little salt but cabeza usually does. The meat was very good. Try them with the green salsa. 5. Carnitas tacos: if you like different textures, get it mixed (cuero included). The mix of different parts of the pig is a lot tastier than regular maciza meat. 6. Drinks: horchata and Jamaica. No package drinks here. Horchata tasted home made and Jamaica was solid. Two of the adults had regular coke from the soda fountain (nothing special). 7. Dessert: flan and arroz con leche. Both very delicious and not overly sweet. Desserts can be paid for in the bakery area so no wait here. Unfortunately, I have no pictures of any of the food we ordered. We were so hungry that we started eating right away. The best part of this place was the affordable prices. For everything we ordered we paid ~$70. Not bad considering we had a lot of food, drinks, and desserts. There's counter siting available inside and some tables outside. Bathroom is on premises but I didn't go in so I'm not sure how clean it was or if it was gender neutral.
This place it's been here for a while. And they know "Mexican Food" I would like to say "comforting food " because you will definitely feel comfortable after trying some of their great varieties of not just food but delicious drinks "aguas frescas" and delicious sweet bread "pan dulce" specially the "Churro Doughnut"
I usually frequent El Camp #2 in Costa Mesa but was in San Juan so thought I'd drop in. Food was exactly the same in the best way possible. My #1 place for authentic Mexican food at affordable prices.
There are places one goes to eat where the food and service take you away from where you’re at and puts you into the country of where the food is from. El Campeón Taqueria is one of those places. In the back of a strip mall in San Juan Capistrano is this restaurant that leaves you feeling as if you’re in Mexico eating tacos. Absolutely amazing and so worth the trip from Corona. We will so be back to eat more and be transported to Mexico.
El Campeon is a true gem for those seeking authentic Mexican food. The team is fantastic, providing friendly and attentive service that enhances the dining experience. The menu boasts a wide variety of options, all prepared with great care and bursting with flavor. Every dish I tried was delicious and left me wanting more. Whether you're craving tacos, burritos, or something more unique, El Campeon delivers an exceptional culinary experience that truly captures the essence of Mexican cuisine. Highly recommended!
I went here with a bunch of friends who were insisting that this restaurant was great. After trying the food, I can confirm. In fact, this restaurant holds true to the rule that a truly great Mexican restaurant does not English on it's menu. As someone who only knows English, communicating was a little bit difficult--but only a little bit. Still, staff were friendly and food was amazing. GET THE AGUA FRESCAS!
I discovered this place while on road trip on the hwy 5. Right off the high away and delicious food. Very traditional feel and they had a lot of things to offer from delicious Mexican food, fruit smoothies, they even have a bakery. The chicken mole was delicious. Sweet and flavorful. Beef barbacoa can feed two people easily. The plate had a lot of meat
One of the best Taquerias in all of Southern California 💗 a true gem in deep south orange county 💚 Anytime we have a soccer tournament in San Diego or a surf trip down to Trestles..El CAMPEON is a must. I always go twice on a trip from Los Angeles 🎯 I love the LENGUA Tacos and Burritos...the carnitas are excellent and so is the fresh juice! I get the Apple, Lemon, Ginger, Carrot..fresh juice! I love El CAMPEON ... What a goldmine..a beautiful food experience for all foodies
I came here for lunch since I work nearby and this place did not disappoint. You immediately feel like you are inside a traditional taqueria. There are a lot options but went with a torta de milanesa. One of the best tortas I’ve had in OC. Some places don’t put queso fresco in thier tortas which is a huge disappointment but thankfully this place does. They also have jalapeños inside so if you don’t like the spicy you can ask them to not include them. And best of all the milkshake! I love liquados and some places don’t add cinnamon or use bananas that aren’t quite ready yet. This place does them amazing. Highly recommend and will be coming back for sure!
Mexican carniceria and panaderia with huge tacos. Came here to get a snack before lunch with my dad on a Monday while my mom was at the Basilica, and ended up more full than I was expecting off of 1.5 tacos. We got lengua, Al pastor, and carnitas. The Al pastor was my favorite, but they’re all good. The meats were super flavorful and were piled high in the flour tortillas. 2-3 tacos should be enough for a meal. You order first, wait for your order number to be called, and then pay at the separate counter. They have outdoor tables. Bring cash. Parking lot is available. I didn’t notice any public restrooms. It’s super casual and seemed to be very popular, as there was always a line (albeit one that moved fairly quickly).
Great place to eat breakfast and lunch maybe even dinner. We usually stop here coming from SD to LA. Thankfully, they open early, making it easier for traveling so convenient. If you’re coming from SD get off on Ortega Highway on the 5fwy. Off topic tho, I share great memories here with an uncle who recently passed. Before I moved to SD from LA we worked on the river. fixing the channels near the Mercedes dealership. Therefore, this place and town will always have a place in my heart a solid recommendation. That alone the food is amazing. RIP tio “Choco”
Man, this place was busy during this time of Lunch hours. The line was long , but customers had waited patiently including me...The foods were fresh and awesome good. The workers were friendly and helpful to the customers . The line was getting shorter and faster even thou the customers kept flowing in. I ordered a carne asada burrito for my lunch. there was big and a lot of meat inside . it was so good and delicious, I can hardly finish it.. You could feel the vibes at this place when you first walk in . This restaurant attracts all kind of people from the walk of life to enjoy their foods.
It is somewhat chaotic the ordering of food. There's is a line and have to know what you want from the menu ahead of time. If you are not familiar with their food or have questions, staff does not have answers. There is a separate line for drinks but you got to wait in the same line of the food people to come to cashier, oder and pay.
Auténtica mexican flavor… tge food is very good make sure u order the right size of the tacos because if not u going to overeat… we try carnitas and asada tacos also we take some Mexican Bread !! And bolillos…. To all the people who leave in san juan Capistrano u are bless with this bread 🥖!! The natural aguas frescas are delicious!! They have outdoor eating only….
Great for low carb eaters. I had a four-meat bowl. Super tasty and the price is reasonable. However, with many such places the system leves A lot to be desired. They need to team up with a German and fix the ordering-waiting-paying methodology. Our food was prepared and ready, but sitting in a queue for the cashier, meanwhile it's getting cold (and it wasn't as hot as I would have liked). Why not let us eat and we'll pay when you're ready? Also, getting our drinks was handled by yet another person. They also have no wifi and no free soda refills. But the food is fantastic and it's best a Tesla supercharger, so that's a plus.
The tacos were just okay—average and not very memorable. What really hurt the experience was the environment. The restaurant had a strong smell similar to bad fish, which was confusing since there’s no fish on the menu. Things got stranger when the tables were taken down before 8pm, forcing us to eat in the car. Even after leaving to get ice cream, that same smell lingered in the car—it seriously followed us. On top of that, there was a dog in the waiting area and clumps of its hair were floating around, which made the space feel unsanitary. Overall, the food didn’t make up for the uncomfortable and off-putting atmosphere.
