1st time at Gilhooley's Restaurant and Oyster Bar! We arrived at 11:30am Sunday. WE LOVED IT! 4.5* Pros & Cons below. PROS: 1) The Service - was fast, friendly & efficient. All customers seemed to be enjoying themselves! 2) The Menu - was fantastic! We had already decided to come back before even tasting the food. It is country seafood cooking! 3) The Bar/Restaurant - was clean & orderly. 4) The Oysters Gilhooley & Oysters Picante - were delicious & decently priced. You could taste the smoke from the grill! 5) Chicken Livers - tasted great & were cooked perfectly! 6) Pickled Green Tomatoes - were slightly spicy/sweet/salty & surprisingly crisp! I wish I could buy a jar of them! 7) Everything Gumbo - was perfect. I would order it again. 8) Oyster Stew - was good and contained a large helping of oysters. 9) Cheesy New Potatoes - were simple, hot and fresh. 10) NO KIDS UNDER 18 ALLOWED!! PERFECT! minor CONS: 1) The Oysters Gilhooley could use more parmesan. I barely saw any on the Oysters. 2) You NEED more specialty oyster options. I was slightly disappointed you only had 4. 3) I would love an option of brown gravy instead of country gravy for the Chicken Livers. 4) The Oyster “Stew” name was misleading. I was slightly disappointed to have received an Oyster Chowder not a Stew. 5) The cheesy new potatoes lacked seasoning. It was a little too simple for my taste.. maybe consider sour cream, chives and bacon? 6) I wish you all had a location closer to Clear Lake, Webster, Seabrook or Kemah!!! 7) I would love it if you sold FROZEN margaritas!

Great place. First time there and first time trying oysters and I have to say they did an amazing job with them. Grilled in the half shell with garlic butter, parmesan cheese and topped off with a grilled shrimp. Also had the boudin balls, which where awesome and the chicken quesadillas which were also very good. Staff was nice and the atmosphere was very comfortable. Definitely will be back!

Took my oyster-loving daughter there on a Sunday. Went back the following Sunday to make sure we weren't dreaming. The 45-minute drive was well worth it. The food and the service are equally AMAZING!! ( Sincere thanks to everyone, especially Luke!). Will return soon!!!!

Great Gilhooleys oysters add a piece of garlic bread to get the garlic butter and parmesan outta the oyster shell. These oysters are grilled over open flame to perfection. Fresh out the salt water to your plate. New update Gilhooley's has CRAWFISH Y'ALL. Monday thru Wednesday and they're good too. Just had me some. Snow Crab now too y'all 2/30/23 😋

Even though it was hotter than inside my oven, the staff was awesome. The food came out quickly despite having a full house and the staff was walking around with pitchers of water ensuring everyone stayed hydrated. It was a great atmosphere with a fantastic band. I would definitely recommend and will go back when I have a chance.

This is one of the first restaurants I feel like I can go in my neighborhood and just relax and enjoy myself during this crazy pandemic. The restaurant has a HUGE outside seating area where tables are very well spread apart and also inside seating (I've been here a thousand times and never gone inside). No children or pets are allowed, so do be aware of that. They have a sign that even says no exceptions and DO NOT ASK US. The serving staff wears masks, and they are always on top of everything. The service is absolutely phenomenal. Tables are clean and the food is delicious! The chargrilled oysters are out of this world, and they typically give you 3-4 extra on every single order! How amazing is that?! The jalapeño hushpuppies are also delicious and I can now say the cheeseburger and fries plate and gumbo are also fantastic. I get the shrimp cocktail from time to time. Its just boiled (and peeled) shrimp in a boil with a side of cocktail sauce. If you do get the oysters, I highly recommend a small order of French bread to lap up the extra butter and parm. mmmmmmm! The ambience is great and the music as always the best. I highly recommend coming and seeing this place. Try everything. After all, I do believe it is one of the best dive bars in the nation!

The best kept secret that you can't keep to yourself! We've been coming here for years. You won't regret it and you'll bring friends the next time. Delicious food and great service. Indoor as well as outdoor seating with bars as well. The food is excellent. And the prices are well below big seafood restaurants with lesser quality food.

Excellent food and service. True hidden jew in San Leon, TX. The raw oysters were so fresh and delicious. The grilled oysters with shrimp and bacon where unreal. Wow!!! Seasoned boiled shrimp will not disappoint. And finaly the fried oysters and shrimp were like no other. Reasonably priced. However, no pets or children under 18 are allowed into the restaurant/bar.

This place is always must experience. Cool atmosphere and very friendly staff. Just a laid back breezy afternoon grilled oyster bar to spend time with friends. Oh no kids aloud. Adult only. No kidding.

If you are looking for oysters and seafood this is the place to come. They have quite a bit of different options for oysters so I highly recommend getting the sampler dozen you won't regret it. Now as good as the oysters were the main dish was even more mind blowing and even more delicious. Got the stuff flounder and man it was so delicious and easily one of the best flounder I've ever had. Nice chill bar area to also enjoy a nice cold beer after a long day fishing or just to cool down in the summer heat.

Food and atmosphere here has always been great. But last time we were here (Oct 2) the service was lacking. We had to walk up to the bar to get refills, and had to ask repeatedly where our server was.

Great stop on the bay! The outdoor seating is shaded and comfortable. Friendly service with a laid back atmosphere! Excellent grilled oysters; topped with shrimp is delicious! Try the boudin balls!

Anytime you're Galveston Bay bound, shoot a drive from the Woodlands is worth it, this IS the place to stop at. The beer, the food and yes the glorious oysters! Raw, my fave, fried and grilled, no one does it better. I had crawfish for the first time and surprise, they were great! I've had the shrimp platter and chicken livers, both great. The staff and no one under 18 policy is awesome. So bring no kids and have a great time.

I’ve been living in San Leon for a few years now and all the locals have mentioned how amazing Gilhooley’s is! I finally took the time to try it out myself and I was definitely not disappointed. I got the Shrimp Stick dinner option which came with 12 perfectly grilled and seasoned shrimp, toast, and two sides. The pickled green tomatoes were amazing! They balanced the saltiness of the shrimp with their sweetness and tanginess very well. The service was also great! You sit yourself and the serves take note of it and will immediately attend to you. I truly would recommend this spot to others! The prices are fair, the service is great, the atomosphere is unique, and the food is amazing.

We LOVED the no kids rule. This is our first time experiencing a no kid environment and wow, it’s life changing. Lol. We sat at a table in the bar area. The bartender was our server and she was amazing. Great personality, amazing customer service, fun atmosphere. If that isn’t enough, THE FOOD. The best crawfish and oysters. Period. We live in North Houston and my husband and I have already decided this will be our date spot at least once a month. If I could give this place more than 5 stars I would.

Amazing as ever. This is one of our favorite places to eat. The food is mouth watering. They were short staffed and only had two waitresses but those ladies were amazing and took care of inside and outside with amazing customer service.

The server "Ashley" was awesome when we visited the establishment. She was very attentive to our request or needs. The food was just as perfect as Ashley. I'm looking forward to visiting very soon!!!

Saw this place on TV and drove from Corpus Christi for lunch. WOW! Well worth the drive. The spinach artichoke shrimp grilled oysters (I know right) were awesome! The fried oysters and catfish were great as well. Alli our server was spot on and very nice. Will certainly make the drive again!

Been wanting to try this place out. I heard good things about their oysters. So I finally brought my girl here and of course tried their oyster sampler and their seafood stuffed jalapeños. For our meal we got the sauted shrimp poboy and my girl ordered the seafood cakes. Everything was delicious. Service was pretty good too! I'll come back just for their oysters alone! Dang good drinks too!! 🍸 The only thing that bothers me, is I don't remember how I found out about this place. But I'll definitely be back.

Came from Gatlinburg after reviewing this place. Having lived in New Orleans for nearly 30 years I’m very familiar with seafood. The shrimphooly were the biggest most delicious oysters I’ve ever had. We also had the seafood platter. The hush puppies were delicious as was the entire platter. Today I was honored to meet Mr Misho, the owner. He was so gracious and gave me a brief history of his place!!! Thank you so much and I’ll be back.

Gilhooley’s never disappoints. The food is outstanding, especially the oysters—always fresh, perfectly prepared, and the reason we keep coming back. The prices are very reasonable for the quality you get, which makes the experience even better. The service is consistently great, and this last visit was no exception thanks to Kimbra. She was attentive, friendly, and very personable, making us feel genuinely welcome the entire time. Kimbra is a big reason we’ll be returning again as soon as possible, hope she’ll be there. Highly recommend Gilhooley’s for great food, great value, and top-notch service.

Best oysters probably anywhere. Their flounder stinks, but I never ate one there. Best burgers around, all the other comfort foods I tried were fantastic. They only have flounders as salt water fish, but I hear if you catch it, clean it, they'll cook it for you anyway you like.

This place is off the beaten path but a wonderful place to come eat. Sitting outside during a cool day or even a warm day is nice. The shade provided by the trees keeps that pesky sun away. The staff is friendly and they seem to help each other out. I had three different waitresses stop by with food or drinks. The menu is vast, offering seafood, country cooking, or on the border flavors. I ordered the special, taco salad, and it was huge. Also delicious! I didn't try anything from the bar but they have one inside and outside. The decor is similar to a pub mixed with a deer hunter's country shack. This place may be unique in its appearance but it's food and service are top notch. I can't wait to return and order something different.

Came in to try the oysters since we heard the price for the raw oysters. Some of the largest oysters i ever had. We had 6 dozen of them. Tried the gumbo and that was on point, comes with side of rice which was awesome on its own but perfect when mixed together. To finish it off we tried the 1/2 shrimp 1/2 oysters fried. Some of the best fried oysters, clean with no grit at all. Highly recommend this place. Definitely love that it is 18+

Heard it from a friend over on the peninsula that this was a hidden gem. Made the trip and they were right. Pretty dang good oysters. Pretty fast service. Don’t let them know that their prices were very cheap. The bartender reminded me of one of my ex-wives :-) good at making drinks. I would make the trip again. I think this place is a local legend. Give it a try, but don’t sit at the bar unless you have a thick skin.

This was our first time here. We came later for drinks and dessert. The carrot cake was pricey but good. The drinks were good and cold but they do serve outside in plastic glasses. A band was playing and was glad we were on the other side of the bar for it. Love the fact they bring the machine to the table to pay! Do not understand why ALL restaurants do not do this! It make you feel so much safer about paying. It had a little breeze and floor fans but would have been so much better if they had mister fans that were quiet. Hard to talk over the fans. I have high expectations for this place due to its good ratings. Ordered a dozen of oyster shrimphooley, half a dozen of fried oyster combo, seafood cakes comb and all-in gumbo. Oysters were good but just above average. Seafood cakes were good as well but just a bit salty. Gumbo was a bit spicy and very generous serving. Fried oysters were rather large. Overall, it was a good meal.

We really enjoyed the raw oysters, pickled green tomatoes, and the fried shrimp! Calamari could have used some salt but other than that this is a great little spot.

Food was excellent service. Service was excellent. Building needs some remodeling. Prices are higher than alot of other places I've been. I'd say take some of the profits an reinvest into your restaurants cosmetics. Chair was at the point of falling apart. Keep up the good food an service.

My wife and I have been coming here for 16 years. The food never disappoints. Great place to relax have a beer and some Oysters. The staff are wonderful and very attentive. Besides a dozen raw oysters we suggest Oysters Shrimphooley.

Huge servings! I was going by East Coast standards. Friendly and prompt service. No Lobster. Platters are double what I expected. Food is good, more used to fried but serves grilled and steamed. Place needs some attention, but prices are reasonable. Not fine dining, but definitely 4☆!

Pulling up to the building, it looked a little sketchy but after going in the decor was perfect for the laid back atmosphere. Everything we ate was very tasty and presented well. The crawfish were amazing but a few were undercooked. Definitely recommend for a low-key meal with family or friends. We are looking very forward to returning to try their world famous oysters!

We stopped by for lunch on a Friday after fishing, mainly because we had seen this spot on TikTok and we were close by. The atmosphere is really inviting and laid-back—you can seat yourself either inside or outside on the spacious patio. Since the weather was nice, we chose to sit outside, and it was a plus that every table had its own fan. Another thing we appreciated was that it’s a 21+ establishment. Parking was easy and there was plenty available. For food, we started with the oysters, which were on special. Unfortunately, they were small and served warm, which was a bit disappointing. For entrées, we ordered the shrimp po’boy and the chicken fried steak. The po’boy wasn’t what we expected—just five shrimp served on a hot dog bun, which felt underwhelming. On the other hand, the chicken fried steak was excellent. The batter was crispy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. Definitely the highlight of the meal. Service was friendly and attentive—our waitress was very nice. My only wish is that she would’ve mentioned how small the po’boy was before we ordered. Overall, despite some misses with the food, the atmosphere and the chicken fried steak stood out. We’d give it another try and would be willing to go back.

In giving a three because the atmosphere was great. Loved sitting out on the patio visiting. However, on this visit we decided to try out the crawfish. We have had crawfish at many of the local restaurants. I will say the size was great and the crawfish were well purged. However they lacked flavor and had zero spice. So we had to improvise. It was a little bit of let down. We all loved the appetizers including grilled oysters, fried mushrooms and fried calamari.

The highlight was our server outside on the patio. She was super friendly and attentive. The entire patio was packed and she had total control. Kudos. Now, the food part...we have heard from our friends to try this place out for a while, but nothing was amazing that we tried. The fried food was overdone with flour in the batter and the grilled oysters were underwhelming. Perhaps an off night, but kinda disappointed in the flavors (lack of). We will try again. Atmosphere is nice outside, but the constant commercials on the streaming FM channel were also a buzz kill. 🤷‍♂️

Went for dinner, nice atmosphere, no kids allowed under 18yrs. We had the raw oysters on the half shell and the grilled oysters for appetizers. For the entree we had the broiled catfish with two sides, the green beans and fried cabbage. Well they brought us the fried fish but it wasn't catfish. We also ordered the roast beef sandwich, what a disappointment, do not order it, you might as well go to a deli and buy your own items and make a roast beef sandwich. They also say come on in and sit yourself and they will acknowledge you, but guess what it takes awhile before they even notice you. Won't be returning, Was not impressed.

The best part of our visit was the friends we were with. No reservations required; thus five 6’2 men with three women stood around waiting for something to come available. I mean, right there among the tables. Awkward. No waitress approached us, secured us a table or offered a drink order while we waited for half hour. The restaurant is obviously popular with locals. It’s a makeshift environment - a place that has been added to through the years with unfinished plywood, debris washed shore along with the rusted license plates nailed to the wall. The half shell oysters may be the attraction for many, but other items on the menu were subpar. Fish was mealy and seemed half frozen although greasy fried on the outside. The waitresses were friendly enough to smile as they took our order. Unlike the bartender that was intoxicated and getting and more & more obnoxiously louder as the night progressed. I guess she can party with her regular patrons at the bar and that keeps the doors open. As for me, I don’t expect every place to be top tier upscale, but at least present us with good service or at the minimum good food. Plenty of parking around the restaurant.

This is a seat yourself place and good luck if you’re looking for a seat. Service was horrible. I’m surprised this place is as popular as it is. The oysters Rockahooley were good, however the crawfish have no seasoning and are served with butter.
