Opinions de Ox & Anchor San Luis Obispo
This place was insanely good. The service and food is the best in SLO. Came here for my anniversary last night and the waiter knew it was before we even sat down and congratulated us. We ordered the crab cakes, oysters, and pork dumplings as starters and they were phenomenal. Highly recommend the dumplings, it’s a great shareable item and they are perfectly steamed over a delicious soy vinegar sauce. The crab cake was also delicious and they masked their own tartar sauce. For entre I had the hanger steak and my wife had the filet. The tray of complementary sauces was a great touch. The red wine reduction sauce was my favorite. Packed with flavor and it’s so delicious I could drink it. Lastly, they gave us warm towels to freshen up before dessert which was so delightful and they smelled like toasted almonds. The dinner was fantastic and the service was outstanding. Will be back!
We had an outstanding first experience thanks to our waiter, Brian, and the entire support staff, who treated us with exceptional hospitality. Brian’s recommendations for our starters, main course, and dessert were absolutely spot on, and each dish exceeded our expectations. The service was attentive from start to finish, making us feel truly welcomed and well cared for throughout the evening. One especially memorable touch was the warm towels infused with almond extract — a luxurious detail that elevated the entire experience. Thank you for the delicious meal, the beautiful ambiance, and the outstanding service. We look forward to returning soon for another wonderful evening.
What a wonderful experience. We are from out of town staying next door at the SLO Hotel for our anniversary. We noted on our reservation that it was our anniversary. They made us truly feel special. We got complementary champagne and a coursed dinner, and a complementary dessert: everything was delicious, the service was exceptional, and we were kinda floored for the consideration. I’m gluten free and they made sure I would be safe. We both got the filet and shared the potatoes. One of the best fillets I’ve had—I think it was the seasoning. I have to say, this is my first stay at SLO and between the SLO hotel and this restaurant, we are really happy with how valued everyone makes us feel. Here is our complimentary mud pie dessert!
Decided to go here last minute and we were lucky to get a reservation. Service was top notch and the food was just amazing. Possibly the best steakhouse in SLO. We couldn’t try desserts because we were so full but will come back for their desserts.
Perfectly cooked steaks as recommended by our awesome server, Marcus. I also enjoyed the lemon cheesecake. Thanks for making our holiday dinner celebration special guys.
Our experience at Ox and Anker was nothing short of exceptional. The food was phenomenal—every course was prepared with incredible flavor, attention to detail, and presentation that showed true craftsmanship. Just as impressive was the customer service, which went above and beyond. The staff was warm, attentive, and made us feel genuinely valued, taking care of us in ways that far exceeded our expectations. We ended up spending nearly three hours at the table, not because we had to, but because we wanted to—savoring both the meal and the atmosphere without ever feeling rushed. Overall an unforgettable dining experience. We look forward to celebrating with them again .
We had a fantastic dinner at Ox + Anchor! The Sichuan Pork Dumplings were tasty, though I found myself missing that bold punch I usually expect from traditional pork dumplings. That said, the Ox + Anchor Eggrolls more than made up for it—absolutely excellent! For mains, both the 12oz Bacon + Blue Ribeye and the Prime New York were cooked to perfection—tender, flavorful, and just right. The real surprise star for me was the Yukon Gold Puree… soft, creamy, and indulgent. Honestly, I’m not sure I can go back to regular mashed potatoes again! 😄 The Roasted Brussels Sprouts were a bit too charred for my liking, so I’d probably skip them next time, but that was a small detail in an otherwise great meal. To top it all off, our server surprised me with an amazing Mud Pie dessert for my birthday—such a thoughtful touch! Overall, a memorable dining experience with great service, and we’ll definitely be back!
My husband and I have been here twice now, both times celebrating our anniversary. This restaurant is incredible. Everything from the food to the service, you will have an excellent experience. Both times Marcus has been our server and he has made our dinner so special. Love his recommendations, typically I will always order a filet mignon at a steakhouse but this time I did the flat iron wagyu and it was perfect! The mashed potatoes are simply chefs kiss, perfection! This is such a great place, highly recommend dining here.
My husband and I tried Ox + Anchor a few months ago and we LOVED it. We definitely had to come back again to celebrate our anniversary. The service, food, and atmosphere is phenomenal. I totally recommend the Bone marrow tater tots, the Yukon potato purée, Mac and cheese, flat iron steak, the rosemary chicken and the king salmon. EVERYTHING is so good.
This place is amazing!! Came with 6 of my girlfriends and we had the best time. All of the food + drinks were so good (get the Pinot Noir!!) and our waiter Bryan made the whole experience even better. Even if the food wasn’t good I’d probably go back just to hangout with him lol. But the food was amazing, the desserts, literally everything. They bring you a warm towel with almond extract oil at the end!! Best night ever, GO HERE
Incredible meal! We were celebrating my husband’s promotion and are so glad we chose this place. The Goat Cheese croquettes were so yummy! We both got the flat iron steak, each steak was cooked perfectly, the bordelaise sauce was DELICIOUS. The service was perfect. We had the lemon bar with raspberry sorbet for dessert, we loved it! Thank you Ox and Anchor for a memorable night.
I celebrated my birthday dinner at Ox + Anchor last night, and the experience was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment we sat down, everything felt elevated, yet welcoming. The cocktails crafted by Dominic were perfection, and Jason provided impeccable service (and bonus points for his amazing hair!). The food is easily in my top 5 meals ever. I first discovered their goat cheese croquettes at a recent mixer and had no idea they were a regular menu item! I’m so happy I can order them anytime. The Ox + Anchor egg rolls were wildly flavorful, and that sweet chili sauce? I could drink it. My only regret was not ordering the bone marrow tater tots (next time, it’s happening). The potato purée was unbelievably smooth and rich, and the crispy polenta was golden on the outside, creamy on the inside. Just pure comfort with a touch of sophistication. The mac & cheese struck the perfect balance: nostalgic, cheesy goodness but leveled up. Oh and the Brussels sprouts—the best I’ve ever had! They were perfectly crisp with bright hits from the pickled red onions. We were recommended the flat iron steak by not one, not two, but three staff members, and they were absolutely right, it did not disappoint. Just when I thought the night couldn’t get any better, the baked Alaska arrived in a full tableside fireworks show. It was theatrical, decadent, and the perfect finale to an unforgettable evening. Ox + Anchor, thank you for making my birthday dinner truly exceptional. I can’t wait to come back.

Back in my hometown to celebrate my birthday. A bit of a splurge but totally worth it. Started with the grilled artichokes, excellent flavor, the smokey flavor with herbs was delectable. No dipping sauce needed! The filet was phenomenal, medium rare, perfect temperature. Pink all the way through, no blue, texture like velvet. So perfect. Sorry no pictures I was too absorbed my the eating 🥩 I asked for a non alcoholic, non soda option and was presented with a fresh squeezed lemonade with muddled berries 🥰 Wonderful experience.
Oh my gosh this place is fabulous! They have a side room that is perfect if you have a large party of 9 like we did. They can close the doors & you have it all to yourself. We were also blessed to have Brian taking care of us. This man is unbelievable. He describes each dish in such detail that you want to order them all. This man knows food! He has the most pleasant & funny personality & is completely entertaining. We thought we’d walked into a comedy club! He made our evening SO much fun! You have got to request this man! The food here is amazing. Our party had the flat iron steak, the ribeye, the swordfish and the lamb. I’ve never had swordfish be so moist & flaky. I’m so used to other places drying it out that I hesitate to order it anymore. The lamb is very tender & melts in your mouth. Best lamb ever. Brian steered us to the perfect choices. Terrific experience & one that we will come back for again. The entrees don’t come with any sides so they have to be ordered separately; however, the side dishes are served family style so they do feed more than one person. It’s pricey but the quality is definitely there.
Our friends had Valentine’s reservations for 2 we wanted to join and make it a table of 4 the manager was eager to accommodate and get us in so last minute on a fully booked day. Service from Bryan was incredible and his recommendations did not miss the goat cheese croquettes are a must the perfect balance of savory and sweet. The flat iron and ribeye steaks were incredible my only complaint was my ribeye was cooked medium well instead of medium rare other than that everything was perfect from drinks to sides all around wonderful for our double date night
Had the most incredible 30th birthday dinner here! Our server Nicole was an absolute delight. Her and the rest of staff assisting her were so kind! She was so pleasant and knowledgeable and want to highlight her warmth! The atmosphere was intimate and welcoming but didn’t feel crowded. The food of course was fantastic. The freshly made focaccia and sourdough were incredible. We ordered egg rolls, dumplings, bone marrow tater tots, truffle fries, Mac&cheese, Brussel sprouts and a variety of steaks were ordered for dinner. We ended dinner with a cake we brought but they gave us pieces of honeycomb chocolate which was such a sweet end to the night. Everything was delightful and I can’t wait until the next time I go!
We had a fantastic experience here. The service was impeccable and the food was exceptional. Portions were generous—we’ll definitely plan to share more dishes next time. A special thank you to our waiter Jason and wine steward Alan for their outstanding hospitality. We’ll absolutely be back. Side note, Alan might have been the GM, though he was introduced and the wine steward. Either way, we were extremely happy.
If you are looking for the best dinning experience in San Luis Obispo look no further. Wow. The service, food, vibe, experience were all perfect. This is the best hands down in SLO. Well done.

It doesn’t give a fine dining vibe, as the decor is rather simple, the bench seat by the kitchen is like sitting in a diner. But the steak…. OMG it was fantastic. Cooked to a perfect medium rare, seared and seasoned to the delight of my taste buds, there was nothing to complain about. The duck was crispy and juicy and the whole meal was one of the best I’ve ever had.
We went here to celebrate our anniversary. Our server was attentive and helpful. The Beet Salad looked like a work of art and was delicious. We ordered the Burger and Lobster Tail Gnocchi. Four stars because although the food was tasty and our server was fantastic, it felt overpriced.

This is one of the best/fancy restaurants in SLO. I was here for a birthday celebration. Service was great and workers were friendly. I recommend the restaurant. Here are what we ordered: Burger: absolutely delicious! 10/10 Flat iron: I would rather order filet mignon even if the server recommends flat iron. 6/10 Beets salad: tasty salad for sharing 9/10 Duck: tasty and well seasoned. 9/10 Creamed Spinach: I would skip this 2/10 Mac and cheese: Yes Please!! 15/10 Loaded potatoes: Bring it on! 10/10

Michelin guide 2024 set us up for disappointment. While the service was superb, the wait staff were super attentive, that was the highlight. Nothing was memorable really. We celebrated our anniversary here, we’re slo locals so we’ve been to most restaurants around here. The crème brûlée was good but we were not blown away.

⭐☆☆☆☆ – Extremely Disappointed Where to start… We had reservations for 10/18/25 at 7:30 PM and arrived early, around 7:15. The hostess told us it would be just a couple of minutes and that she’d come get us when our table was ready. Ten minutes later, when we went back to check in at 7:26, the same hostess greeted us with a confused “How can I help you?” — which threw us off, considering we had just spoken moments before. Once seated, it took a while before our server came by. We ordered drinks and fries while we waited — the fries were good, and the drink (a Perfect Margarita) was decent. We then ordered two steaks: one medium and one medium-well. Over an hour later, we still hadn’t received our food. At that point, we decided to ask for the check and just leave. The waiter was understanding and comped our drinks and fries, which we appreciated, but the overall experience left a bad taste in our mouths. It genuinely felt like there was some favoritism in who got served — as if locals or regulars took priority. We’re not from the area, and it definitely showed. We’ve had far better service at restaurants charging the same price for a steak. This was especially disappointing because I’ve been looking forward to trying Ox + Anchor since it opened. We drove two hours just to dine there, and sadly, it was one of the most letdown dining experiences we’ve ever had.
