Opinions de Johnny Doughnuts San Rafael
Really they're too pricey for a doughnut, but great for a very occasional splurge, as their doughnuts are above the quality/taste of your standard doughnut! In a way, the overpricing is nice because it limits my doughnut consumption.
Dare I say how their gluten free fritters embody perfection? I shouldn't because I went a few weeks ago and they were sold out! Got there early today though and it was nothing but smiles eating that beast 👍🏽
Patrick walked me through Johnny's entire selection of divine treats. He made what was to be a grab and go pick up into a fantastic educational experience! Such a treat to learn about the doughnut process from the pros themselves. Such a sleek, inviting environment and impeccable presentation of sweet and savory delights.
Best donuts ever, really cool and different choices. My son had a Brown butter donut and I had a lime poppy seed donut both were delicious
Always great doughnuts and coffee. Today is Labor Day and there was only 1 person working. She did an amazing job keeping the line moving - kudos to her!
THEY HAVE VEGAN DONUTS! Vegans unite! Jk I am not vegan, eating these just helps my donut guilt. "So now you too can eat donuts guits free" *cheez smile*. So let us talk about the interior, it looks like an Instagram photographers dream almost screaming "please take pictures of donuts and coffee on this table!'". I love their creativity, they have some amazing interior work and na open kitchen, uhg just see it for yourself!
Donuts made in heaven! Leave your belts at the door and come in for some gut busting donuts. Great coffee and friendly staff. Invitingly open space where you can digest your donuts all day.
My favorite vegan glaze donut. I literally get them every single Sunday morning, unless I’m not in town. They are delicious!!!
Killer and unique donuts. I loved the layered chocolate, croissant donut filled with chocolate chips. Flaky and fresh. A delight.
Their doughnuts are off the hook, locally sourced mostlly organic ingredients, they have vegan and gluten free options and the doughnuts are dense tasty and one will fill me up more then entire meal
BEST donuts and great staff. If they make a mistake. let them know kindly. they will fix it (no one is perfect) AND Where else can you get ORGANIC DONUTS? POTATO DONUTS? SWEET POTATO DONUTS? GLUTEN FREE TWISTS? BISMARCK'S WITH HOMEMADE JAM? seriously... if you are going to misbehave... this is the only correct response!
This literally is the only place I go for donuts. I have to drive 40, 45min to get there and cross a bridge. I love the old fashion donuts because they are slightly crunchy and not overly moist. The icing is perfectly sweet and tangy. I get the crodough first and devour that. Then I go in on the passion fruit madness. Hahaaaaaaaaaaaaa! After that I hack up the strawberry and blueberry old fashioned ones and keep nibbling away the rest of the day. Yes I get a huge box of donuts everytime I go there. No less that 5 are inside. And as far as prices go they are surprisingly moderate given the quality/hugeness. It excites me! I've arrived between 9 and 11 am on Saturday and 9 ish am on Sunday and there was a huge selection. Very please.
donuts were tasty, looked very pretty too. wanted to take a picture, but my girlfriend dove in a little too fast. lol! employees were pleasant and made me feel like i was welcomed into their own kitchen. can't believe i am just trying out this hidden treasure. will be back much sooner than later :)
My favorite donut place in the Bay area. Good selection to please most people. Very well made. No chi-chi flavors like Dynamo donuts - classic American style, and very fresh.
Don't go too often or You'll Become Addicted! I ordered donut holes for my Mardi Gras party and they were awesome! Just kidding about the don't go too often part, You should absolutely go and support a good donut shop like Johnny Doughnuts.
Best donuts I have ever had. They have vegan options, one is a sweet potato donut, I think better than any of the others. Highly recommend. They also have almond milk and use Equator coffee.
Are the doughnuts a bit on the pricey side? Yes. Are they worth that price? Also extremely yes. The fact of the matter is that these big boy doughnuts are so friggin rich and delicious, you kinda only need one.
Great experience in the heart of downtown San Rafael. Nice clean social distance covid cautiously conducted. Nice big fresh phat donuts!! Friendly staff who even gave us a donut on the house! Defintly a special treat to take those spcial ones in your life to see and taste Cool little joint. Picture worthy! B+ a bit pricey but again it's a boutique place in the heart of san Rafael I wouldn't expect anything less. ♡♡♡♡
Amazing coffee. These guys are the best! They brought free coffee and doughnuts to the firefighters at the Woodward Fire camp! I can't say enough good things about Johnny's Doughnuts. After weeks at fire camps with bad coffee I was so thankful for this.
Artisan doughnuts bursting with flavor. Very fresh and ever so tasty. Be wise and buy at least two varieties per person. Great coffee spot too.
Mind you they are pricey...But I can't say enough good things about them. My favorite is the Cronut donut....it's Delicious. When I visit from Nevada I always go to get some. I wished we had one in Las Vegas.
OMG the bestest freshest doughnuts I've ever had in my life. The coffee is top notch as well. Good service they follow all the covid related guidelines.. very satisfied
Best doughnut experience EVER! Omg! The variety was great! I'm sad they were either out my favorite doughnut shop staple or they didn't make them, but all the other flavors more than made up for it! Wow! The dough! Heavenly! They even have yummy VEGAN options that taste AMAZING!
Best donuts in Marin for sure! The only thing missing is the frog by cashier .. I’ve noticed today when I was there and was looking for it everywhere. #comebackfrog
Love their doughnuts had them actually provide them at our wedding instead of cake and they were a huge hit. My only regret is I didn't get more than 1 will be coming to get some more soon!
Amazed by their philanthropic work (enabling donut donations to healthcare front line workers and now teachers!). The salted caramel chocolate old fashioned is a favorite, as well as the lime poppyseed seasonal. The staff is always friendly and accommodating. Their process and signage during the pandemic is clear as well.
My go-to for the best doughnuts, they never disappoint. Also have vegan ang gluten free options so my friends with dietary constraints can enjoy too.
Great doughnut shop! The staff were very friendly and the doughnuts were so incredibly good. If you want a dense, cakey doughnut, this is the place to go! It is a little hard to notice from the street coming from central San Rafael, so be on the lookout.
The doughnuts are thick, but not overly sweet. The lemon poppy tastes really good. However, the Apple Fritter is not so tasty, and does not have enough apples to my liking.
We love Johnny Doughnuts! Great options for everyone from the adventurous to the most conservative. I love cake or old fashioned varieties My daughter loves raised, the brighter colored the better, and my husband loves the gluten-free frittah thang!
One of the two best doughnuts I've ever had.* No matter what your preference, they do it well. I've had glazed, raised, old-fashion, fritters. Everything is well made, tasty and huge! Note: if $3-4 each seems pricy just consider what you'd pay for a similar item at Starbucks. And I assure you, whatever you paid will become irrelevant the moment you bite into one of these. *the other is "Coffee an' " in Westport, CT
If you are in San Rafael Johnny doughnuts is a must!! They are devine. They had several vegan options. Also, the chocolate sweet potato donuts are so delicious, not overly sweet. Very hearty and satisfying and not super greasy donuts. 🍩🍩🍩🍩🍩
The doughnuts were very fresh! The hot buttered coffee was good but it was barely warm... first time here as I was traveling for work.
Best donuts around. They are boujee and a little pricey for donuts but they are delicious and absolutely worth it. I appreciate that they have cold brew as well.
I get donuts here to give to businesses I patronize. Auto repair, plumbing and electrical equipment supplier. The vegan options are especially appreciated as one of businesses I provide an occasional treat to have two staff that are vegan. The products offered are unequaled by any other similar type buildings. The look on everyone's faces when they see the Johny Donuts box is priceless.
Found this place by accident while picking up a friend nearby. Service was great, but selection was slim pickins by the time I arrived, which was more my fault than theirs. My donut was a bit dry but the coffee was delicious. I would definitely try this place out again.
A perfect place to have a cuppa and meet a friend
Donuts that rival Portland's Voodoo in quality. Great service. This place deserves to be a local institution. The staff are super friendly and always prepared to help out with suggestions. I once even had them offer to make a donut as a special order because they'd sold out. You will never want to eat a regular donut again.
Can't say I'm a huge doughnut fan, although these ones are definitely cream of the crop if you're looking for a heart busting heavy filled dessert. Doesn't mean I don't get them, but we generally go for the espresso and knowing there will be plenty of space to sit (well besides right now during the shelter in place). Staff is always nice, service is pretty fast, never very crowded. Definitely do go for the ones that are fresh out the oven as well, extra special.
Specially doughnuts a must try! They offer coffee as well with in store dining. I belong to their mailing list which also sends me offers.
Their old fashioned donuts recipe is delicious! My donut was crispy, well flavored, and fresh! Their iced coffee was a nice compliment to a hot summer day. They are open and respectful of social distancing!
These donuts are amazing! Get there early so you can grab a fresh donut. The strawberry frosting is so fresh. It's also a nice place to site and relax while getting your sugar fix.
for our wedding reception, shawna and her team supplied us with 200 donuts, as well as a sturdy-as-hell metal pegboard to hold them all, creating a veritable wall of donuts. this donut wall was, without question, the feature that generated the most excitement and drew the most guests. and hey, bonus, the donuts are super tasty! they are also LARGE. so, if you find you're still hungry after eating a normal donut for mere mortals, this is the place for you.
Once in awhile splurge. A bit pricey. But hey, the only place I know of in Marin, that makes vegan donuts using yam flour. I believe they still offer Equator coffee too. Yum! More than enough seating. Great location on 4th Street with plenty of street parking.
What an Amazing Find in San Rafael... Gourmet Made Donuts! Absolutely Decedent!!!! Just found out there's one in SF where I live!🥳 Just down the block from Seawood Photo!🤩
Delicious but expensive. A really nice shop with large tables in a expansive layout. We went at the end of their day (2 pm) and you can see that they still had some left. That also shows they have their values in the right place to balance work and time off to produce a quality product with good staff. We had a cronut and a french toast doughnut. Ugh! They were SOOO good! The quality can be tasted in the chocolate icing too. It tastes like dark chocolate, and not like the slightly chocolaty brown wax that some places have. We would buy more, but we'll have to save our pennies to make it a special treat next time.
Wow do I love these doughnuts!! They are such great quality and have an amazing selection. I truly have never had a better doughnut and they are worth the calories and sugar!! I highly recommend visiting Jonny’s!!
This place is incredible. I’m obsessed with the apple pie donut- best thing I’ve ever eaten. The dough is so soft and pillowy and the filling is incredible. Definitely worth the trip. Get there before 10am to ensure the favorites aren’t sold out!
Exotic selection of fresh donuts. The counter person suggested today’s lime mascarpone donut. Very fine.
Wow!!! The donuts are a little high priced but so worth it!!! Yum, my raspberry was filled
Johnny's is a family favorite for a breakfast outing. It has a neighborhood vibe that is casual and lively. We love to bring our daughter here because it is kid-friendly and stroller accessible. The indoor space is large with ample communal seating. While it can get crowded on the weekends, the staff is expeditious and the line to order moves quickly. Make sure to check out their fridge which offers fresh Equator cold brew.
These donuts are incredible and huge! The staff is very friendly and the atmosphere is very cool, super modern. I had a blueberry donut and it was delicious, the only thing is they are pretty expensive and too big for one sitting
Johnny's has THE best donuts hands down. Super dense and always fresh and tasty. I make special trips to the 4th st location while in town, everytime.
I always make it a point to visit Johnny Doughnuts when I'm in the area. Typically at the Larkspur location, but decided to try the downtown San Rafael location this time, and it did not disappoint. The shop is quaint and the service was quick, despite waiting in line (per usual). My favorites are the sweet potato doughnut and the strawberry icing! 😋 We even had a doughnut "tasting" once home, as my mom's favorite is the lemon poppyseed, she warmed it up and paired w/ a glass of milk for a yummy Sunday morning treat! Until next time 😉🤸🏾♀️
Great service, great ambiance, delicious donuts and coffee, with vegan options! (Come early to make sure they haven't run out, vegan options not pictured below)
It’s a rare occasion for me to buy donuts but I wouldn’t buy them anywhere else! Best donuts ever!

If you didn’t have a reason to come to San Rafael, you do now. Johnny’s is a beautiful shop with great doughnuts and coffee, and beautiful people. You don’t want to miss out on this place.
We went to this place by chance cuz it was close to where we were staying, and was a great find! Even our English isn't good, the staff were so kind and welcoming. The donuts are displayed so beautifully, and everything looked good which was hard to choose. The donuts are thick and chewy, taste great! I don't have much time left on my trip, but I will definitely be back before I leave!
Best donuts around. They are boujee and a little pricey for donuts but they are delicious and absolutely worth it. I appreciate that they have cold brew as well.
These are some heftyyyy doughnuts! It was bigger than the size of my palm and were 2 freakin' inches thick! BLUEBERRY RAISED ...just tasted like sweet glaze. I didn't get any blueberry flavors from it, so disappointed. And not sure how fresh it was but the doughnut itself was quiiite good. CRO-DOUGH Finally. My first time trying this hybrid and lemme just say... AHHH, why. Whose idea was this!? At first bite, I was not digging it. It tasted like a bready doughnut and well, gimme a doughnut or gimme a toasty croissant, just not this confused thing. And to make it heavier, Johnny Doughnuts have this cream filling in their cro-doughs and ahh, can't. eat. this. any. more. please. stahp. PASSION FRUIT RAISED 10 hours later, we decide to indulge on this doughnut. It takes maybe 4 bites to start tasting passion fruit but once you get there, it's yummy. Subtly tart. I regret not having this first since the doughnut wasn't as fresh now... Such sadness. 3.5 overall, thanks to the passion fruit flavor and texture of a fresher doughnut. Rounded up for my hopes of getting a lime mascarpone filled one next time //crossmyfingersandhopeitsgood
Next to Domino's donuts, the best in Bay area. Clean location with ample seating. Street parking. Amazing tasty donuts, and they serve Equator coffee.
I've noticed they aren't using organic flour anymore - it's now red rose premium. Good vibes & doughnuts though! I hope they switch back to the organic flour....
Daaaaaang, the donuts are good. Seriously good. They don't make you feel disgusting after eating them either. They also start at $3.50. Great coffee, good location, very friendly, amazing selection.
Delicious doughnuts and wonderful costumer service. Doughnuts are really expensive, ~$4, but very filling. Free WiFi and lots of seating. The croissant-doughnuts are especially good, and they have a small amount of custard filling. I particularly enjoy the strawberry topped doughnut as it has a pronounced strawberry taste. I'd get more but who wants to drop $40 on a dozen doughnuts?
Fancy donuts with a fancy price (roughly twice the price of "regular" donuts). They are good though and quite large so maybe pound for pound they aren't that much more expensive. They claim to use fresh potato in their doughnuts but I can't tell. They have a lot of fruit flavored glazes that are pretty intense and pretty good.
Great donut place, with a more spacious location than their new setup in Larkspur Landing just down the road. Good spot to come with the family early on a Saturday or Sunday morning. Take heed of the “early” part - you need to get here early during the day or all the good selection of donuts will have sold out. They also do a half-decent coffee here, which is perfectly paired with any of their range of donuts. I also really love the interior decor of this store, feels kind of like the interior of a new-York warehouse.
After tip... $60 for a dozen donuts. Each one, beautiful as a wedding cake. Impress your friends. I'll stick with the cheap stuff for myself, but when I want to make someone else feel like a million dollars? I'll get them a Johnny Doughnut - every time.
Definitely a fancy donut shop! The store is bright and clean, and filled with delicious donut selections. They have a variety of vegan donuts, too! There’s plenty of street parking right outside the shop. But come early because they run out of donuts quick.
Overall great place. Doughnuts are good. Coffee is good. Staff is always friendly. I do have an ask for the owner. PLEASE get coffee cups that don’t leak. Every time. EVERY TIME! Leaks from the cup seam or crappy lid seal. Drips on the clothes. Drips on the floor. Leaves a big ring on the table. Please just don’t cheap out on cups. Don’t offer to go cups at all if they don’t work. It’s ridiculous.
Been here a few times. I am always stoked to find great donut shops but this one sort of let me down. I order donuts but for some reason am never super happy after eating them. Maybe it’s the taste or wrong time of day. They have tons of options and even make cronuts. In all they have a killer spot in a good part of town. Just hasn’t clicked for me personally.
Donuts and cappuccini are really good. Only issue I have is nothing is labeled, so people have to ask what each donut is. Love the old school vibe and decor. Staff is really friendly.

Beautiful and clean placed. The doughnuts are about as big as your head. Impossible to eat in one go. The music is so loud you have to shout even to the person standing right next to you. I asked them to turn it down as we were the only ones in the entire place and she just smiled and walked away.
This place is more about the "experience" than the donuts. They are way too thick and heavy for me. Fritters are the bomb though. If you want donuts go to larkspur. If you want a very expensive donut experience with a side of 50s swing music, go here.
Johnny Doughnuts has great doughnuts. But after using their payment system, I've been deluged with emails from restaurants in New York, and I'm pretty sick of it. I think it's the Square system, as I had a problem with Square in another setting. Anyway, very strange. If you go, you'll enjoy the doughnuts, but I suggest paying in cash!
Extremely overpriced. Donuts are good quality as far as ingredients and very large. But too large to finish in one sitting or by yourself, making it not worth $3.50 a donut before "suggested" tip. Had the experience. No need to return.
Their Doughnuts are on the better side, but nothing to rave about. We tried 3 glazed and filled Doughnuts which felt a bit Dense/doughy and tasted slightly greasy. The custard filling is plain and the chocolate glaze flavor is too light. Didn't try coffee or drinks we came here exclusively to try the Doughnuts. Other than that, the place is hip, nicely decorated and the service is awesome. Sorry for the not so positive review but my standard was elevated on my last trip to blue star in Portland. But compared to other shops in the bay area , Johnny is definitely one of the best.
I don't get the fuss. Donuts were good, but that's it. They were pretty large, and dry on the inside. Not worth the hefty premium price in my opinion. They do have a huge selection of donuts, it's worth a try to see if you like them.
You must get there early or you'll have very little choice. Apparently you need to get there by 9:30 am if you want to try their cronuts (croissant donuts). All we had to choose from were apple fritters, blueberry, 2 glazed with sprinkles and "chocolate glazed salted caramel". Well, the fritter was better than most in that it wasn't a heavy dough, but the salted caramel was literally a spicy cake donut (like something you'd have during the holidays), with a caramel and chocolate glaze that didn't have flavor because they just kind of blended together. I don't recommend going there for either of those.
The doughnuts are capital F … fancy. Gorgeous looking works of art. With that comes along a premium price. A doughnut will set you back $3-4 each. They have no discount per the dozen. They also sell coffee drinks. There is some indoor seating but it’s limited. They have an outdoor patio which is actually a barricaded parking space on 4th street, it’s functional. Back to the doughnuts… they have glazed, raised, crodoughnuts, bar, twists, fritters, cinnamon rolls, and bismarks in a bunch of flavors. The raised doughnut tasted a bit different than what I am used to, not in a bad way, just different. The raised doughnuts contain wheat and a bit of potato. I bought a couple of old fashions (chocolate salted caramel, vanilla) and raised (classic, strawberry glaze). The doughnuts and glazes were not overly sweet. My fave was the chocolate salted caramel, great flavor combo. Moist interior, with a classic crunchy exterior. The staff at the doughnut ordering counter didn’t know the exact prices beyond the range of $3-4. And oddly there was no pricing listed anywhere. There was no menu … no price board, no printed menu. I found that totally odd to not have prices listed. I still don’t know if I was overcharged or not. There seems to be room on the doughnut sign label to write in the prices.

One dozen donuts cost me 52 bucks and they were dry as dirt powder.i thought I was eating a old tier
The donuts are not what I expected. Very heavy, similiar breadiness to a bagel. They are served cold and they are way too expensive. The shop is cute.
I feel cheated. They say they have a wheat free donut but it’s cooked in the same grease as regular donuts and are set next to gluten donuts. It’s no longer wheat free!!! It has been engulfed with gluten/wheat at several steps. That’s like saying it has no nuts in the batter but it’s cooked in peanut oil and placed next to peanuts. It’s contamination!!!!
I can deal with overpriced doughnuts, but I expect a certain quality. JOHNNY offers unusual flavors that are all the rage, and a clean sleek interior for the store. More than 5 employees, half of which were not taking initiative to get the 3-5 customers standing around. This is a Doughnut shop for Christmas sake! Annnywaaay .... I didn't try any cake donuts but the raised doughnuts are super bread-y. For my taste and what I think a raised doughnut should be is much softer and sweeter. Missing the mark. Blue Star wannabe.
these are the most expensive donuts ive ever bought, lol. avrage cost was 5 dollars . and for that price, they should be the best donut out there, but these are far from that. bought 4 from them. they were dence and chewy instead of light and fluffy. some were like eating fried french bread. they were beautiful to look at, but their dough recipes are off, cake donuts were dry and greasy the maple bar was as tought as a fench bread fact ive eaten frech bread lighter then thay donut. but i guess if you make them look fancy and charge an arm and a leg for them, people will by them 😅. have to say the staff was very nice though so they did get that right
The furthest thing from Krispy Kreme. Thick cake donuts, not at all to my taste. If you like donuts that are close to bagels, then this is the place for you. Also, they are cold, and won't heat them up at all. Also, the ambiance is lovely.

Typical Marin food: overpriced and mediocre. If you want actually good donuts at an appropriate price go to Sunrise. This place will charge you $50 or more for a dozen. What??

$3.50 for a single glazed doughnut. That's over quadruple the price of one at a nearby doughnut shop that makes excellent doughnuts. If money is no object for you, maybe this place is your nirvana. Most of the rest of us can do as well or better for a lot less money.
1 year ago, I bought a dozen donuts for 48 dollars, which was expensive but enjoyable. Today, I got to get them again as i was in the area, and they charged me $64.50. As the cashier rang me, I told her I got a dozen, and she informed me they charge individually and don't sell donuts by the dozen. I've never heard of a simple donuts place not offering donuts by the dozen, so never again will you get my business. WAY OVER PRICED!!!! PERIOD.....
I enjoy a good donut but 11 dollars for a couple of monster donuts and a carton of milk. Please. The cream filled donut was good but no one wants to eat a butter donut. The butter donut tasted like you’re eating a stick of butter with a loaf of bread. I’ve had way better.
06/11/2024 @10:53A.M. This is my first time visiting this place! Your first impression to your customers always matters. The tall lady at the ordering booth with the doughnuts was kind. She then hands the order off to the female cashier (shorter lady). I told her that I'd like a HOT vanilla latte. I inquired about other flavors. She asked me 3 times if I wanted my latte HOT or COLD before I paid for my order. Every time, I told her HOT. Instead, she put on the receipt a cold latte, and that's what she made. She gave me the opposite of what I asked her for, and she did that intentionally. This is my first and last time at this doughnut shop. Also, $3.95 for a doughnut is too much. I ordered two. The amount given for the latte is $5.50 for less drink than you'd receive at Starbucks. On top of that, I tipped, and she still got my order wrong. That's just rude. I bless this business, but I will never eat here again. I will stick with STARBUCKS. There are too many doughnut shops in town to be careless, rude, and overpriced! Personally, I will always choose quality over quantity. God bless, but I do not recommend this business to anyone. By the way, the doughnuts were delicious, but I didn't like the latte. It did not taste like vanilla. Go elsewhere. I beseech this company to do better; IN JESUS name, amen. I rate this business 2 out of 10 based on my experience today, alone. (JESUS CHRIST IS LORD OVER ALL)
