Opinions de State Room San Rafael
Love this spot! The food is always so tasty. I'm a big fan of getting a whole variety of the small plates to share. There aren't a ton of great tapas restaurants around here, but State Room always scratches that itch. The acoustics can be a bit loud, but overall the lively atmosphere is very enjoyable.
Excellent food, excellent service, every time. We’ve been here at least 10 times and have consistently enjoyed it. We’ve brought friends and relatives, and each one has loved the place. Menu is varied: noodle bowls, wood fired pizzas, crunchy chicken sandwich, calamari…and they take a “burger” to a whole new level (our family unanimously says it’s the best burger we’ve ever had). And if you like beer they have a great selection there as well. I recommend the altered state - but at 9% only one! We also love the vibe: you can come casual or polish up! High ceilings, wise lighting, strategic booth walls and level changes make the place seem larger than it is, yet cozy at the same time. My wife and I had the pleasure of meeting the owner Matt today. It was clear where the customer service culture comes from - he’s done a great job setting the tone. We’ll be back…again…and can’t recommend it enough.
We came here for a group gathering. Our waitress was very patient and efficient. There was a nice variety of options for the meals raging from bowls to full plate dinners. All the options were nicely portioned. Asking with their standard menu there were also specialties of the night. We were very happy with our choices.
The absolute best food in downtown San Rafael! Period! I travel to San Rafael for work and in a collective 2 trips (2.5 weeks total), I've been here 5 times. Every menu item I've had has been fantastic, including: shrimp Caeser salad, fried chicken, sticky ribs, pizza, and shaken beef. The cherry on top is the Altered State Belgian Golden Trappist Ale. As a traditional Belgian beer hyperfan (Gulden Draak, St. Bernardus abt. 12, etc...), Altered State is phenomenal! Thanks, Matt and the entire team, and thanks for the crowler of Altered State! Two more going out the door tonight! Salud!
Confirmed, the service is exceptional. We were greeted promptly, given the seat we wanted, our puppy got a treat and a bowl of water, we got full glasses of water and all thus before we even looked at the menu. The burger was great, the party was cooked perfectly and was uniform thickness. The kitchen needs to work on the fries (the cut is too small and they are over fried). The beers were very good, we tried their Belgian and Stout. The reviews were good and we chose to drive out of our way, and I'm glad we did. Thank you and keep the great service up!
This was genuinely one of the best experiences I've had in a restaurant. My partner and I decided to try out this spot as the first restaurant we'll visit while in this country from South Africa. We were blown away by the welcoming team, pleasant atmosphere and wonderful food. Neither of us are sure anything will top the vibes quite yet. My partner almost left me for the steak because it was so exquisite. I felt the same way about the dumplings. Don't even get me started on the in house brewed beer! The State Room is definitely on our list of favourites now!
Love this place. You look at the menu at first and you think wow, I thought it was just burgers and beers…but no! They have amazing food, with a little bit of everything. Drinks are always good. Super consistent food and drinks. We always need to order the dumplings, so yummy. The burguer it’s also a favorite. Caesar salad with prawns also delicious.
Good variety on their menu. Food, drinks and service was good. Great place to hang out with friends and co-workers.
The food is fantastic but prepare to pay $30 for bowl of curry with no meat. It’s one of those sneaker restaurants that seems casual but is really expensive for what it is. Cant complain that the food doesn’t taste good tho! You could probably replicate their garlic noodles by getting the shrink wrapped cooked noodles at Trader Joe’s tho. I think it’s a matter of knowing what to get for the price. Like the fired chicken platter is worth it. But if you’re trying to eat light and healthy prepare for poor value.
Best thing about the State Room: the service. Our waitperson was exceptionally friendly and accommodate. We felt instantly welcome and were well taken care of. We went in just looking for my favorite snack, fries and a beer (don’t judge) but my wife insisted on eating, too. She ordered a cinnamon roll and a mimosa off the brunch menus. The cinnamon roll is cooked and served in a small iron skillet. It looks much better than it tastes. The mimosa was so good, however, that we traded up to a carafe. My fries were plentiful and my beer (a Presidential Porter, ABV 5.5%, $8) perfect for the wintry cold.
Super sweet place. Haley was wonderful - attentive but not overbearing. I loved that it was cat and dog friendly, and loved being able to sit on sidewalk. The rice ale was something super special - like sparkling wine, but in beer form? Try it! A star off because I THINK they’ve gotten a bit lazy with food details, since, with the exception of the Italian close by, they are one of only in their class in San Rafael - I think. Salmon was stingy in the Lomo lomo starter, which meant it was over-sauced, things were oversalted - but not with good salt. Lots of reliance on sauces, flavors not layered in. Also - the ‘living wage’ 3-4% add-on was irksome. We are already accustomed to paying 15-20+% tax in US, and servers often make more than most professions. If restaurant is going to charge ‘living wage’ tax - I just find that embarrassing. You’re charging it ubiquitously anyway, don’t grandstand about it, just build it into salaries and prices like any respectable business. This restaurant was lovely, but a few key things like this notched it down. Quite fixable things though. An investment in good salt and your humans never goes astray….
Good selection of beers. I got a Belgian style ale. Some craft cocktails. My wife got one the Winding Road, Empress gin with a basil leaf on top. Nicely done. Very good selection of appetizers to accompany your drinks. We had the garlic and truffle fries and the “home made” dumplings, which arrived so fast we thought we got someone else’s order. Service at the bar was a bit slow, though, so sit there if time is not of the essence.
We decided to walk up and down 4th Street on a Friday evening and pick a random place for dinner, finally choosing The State Room because it seemed to have more energy than most of its neighboring restaurants. We were easily seated without a reservation at 5:30, but by 6:00 the place was filling up. Wouldn't be a bad idea to get a reservation. It's a very lively happy hour. That's what I liked best about the State Room. It's got a great energy. I'm not really sure what the ambiance is going for…sort of a warm sports bar industrial feel with old timey style pictures. It feels a little like an ai curated Pinterest board urban chic. I actually googled to see if this is a chain. I don't think it is, but it gives off those kind of vibes We had very prompt and efficient service, except after we had finished eating and the table was cleared. I mean, the server checked in on us three times throughout the meal, but once we were ready to pack it up, he was nowhere to be seen. I'm sure this was just an anomaly, but it's a pet peeve of mine…having to sit for a long time at an empty table, then having to hunt down the server to get the bill. The food was fine. I had the Ahi Tuna Poke Bowl. Others at my table had the Fried Chicken and the Creole Special. You can certainly order a variety of food, there is no special focus. We all agreed our dishes were perfectly adequate. My recommendation is to visit The State Room with friends and hang out at the lively bar. If you're looking for a memorable meal, you might try elsewhere. Again, not bad, just nothing special.
Was looking for a dog-friendly place to grab dinner while in the area. The outdoor area here is great although a bit small, but they do have some additional table along the street. Dumplings were really good and service was very friendly. I also got the fried chicken sandwich.. I felt it was overpriced for how small the actual chicken included (half of the sandwich was just coleslaw and bread) but it was still tasty.
Great beer selection. Diverse menu. Cubano & burgers were very good. Service was a bit slow for 3pm on a Saturday in my opinion as I feel that a table should be greeted by server within 5min of seating. That aside it was worth the wait. Server was nice. Place has a cool funky atmosphere. Will deffinatly go back!!
My company went there for a going away party for one of our co workers on 10-09. The waitress was rude, it was bugs in one of my co workers drinks & nothing was compensated not even an apology. I made reservations for 15 people apparently that was their max but a few other co workers showed up & they couldn’t even give us one extra chair! We will never be going back there. Very disappointed! And we spent a very pretty penny there.
