This review is for the Safari West African Tour. This was such a great experience! Our tour guide was Kimberly and she was so awesome. She really kept me engaged during the whole tour and I learned so much! She also gave us opportunities to ask questions which just added more to the learning experience. The tour it self is about a 2.5 hour drive where she stops and speaks about the animals/plants in addition to being right in the enclosure with the animals. The second part of the tour was the walking portion where we got to see additional animals and walk through the bird sanctuary. Everything about the tour is spectacular. Kimberly even went as far as getting the kids who were sitting on top an umbrella from another tour guide. That was so sweet of her to go above and beyond. I will definitely plan to come on the different seasons or book an overnight stay. I highly recommend checking out Safari west!
This was an amazing experience! Had an absolute blast. We had Killian as our tour guide and she was so much fun. Loved her personality. She had us all laughing. The animals all looked very healthy, and the whole place is so clean. The food at the end of the safari was delicious. So many beautiful animals. I can't think of one negative thing to say about my visit to Safari West . WILL DEFINITELY BE RETURNING VERY SOON!
We had a Talk nerdy to me tour with Miranda; We had a cheetah encounter with Veronica; And we had a rhino encounter with Kellen; These private tours were amazing. I highly recommend them. And I commend these three employees for making such a great impression on myself and my husband. And the tent was so romantic and charming, and it had all the amenities you could possibly need Which for me means hot water, plenty of electricity, heaters, fans, and a great shower🎉
We paid a visit in late December, right after the holidays. Didn’t stay at the hotel but booked a safari and a lunch. Given the secluded location and the lack of other options nearby, the lunch was solid. We got to choose from several options of meats and a couple of sides buffet-style, plus teas, coffees, juices, hot chocolate and water, as well as fresh fruit. I think I saw some people coming for another helping but I don’t know for sure if this is an option. Staff brought us cookies as well. I didn’t like some of the food but ate most of the items. The dining hall was cute and staff was very welcoming. They also have a decent variety of snacks and quick foods in the store. It was rainy that day, and we all got offered disposable rain jackets to grab. My medical request was accommodated right away and they had plenty of clean and warm (nice!) blankets and umbrellas if we liked. The tour is quite long, so in the weather like this, it gets kinda bone chilling, so dress wisely. Also, diesel from the cars is pretty smelly, so keep it in mind if you’re sensitive to smells. The jeeps were old-school and fun. We’re both adults and we had that sense of adventure riding them. Our tour guide/driver was very knowledgeable and loving towards animals and the place itself, and everyone whom we encountered on this trip seemed to be the same way. We learned a lot about their animals and saw many varieties of species of mammals, birds and trees. This is not a wild-ride safari from the movies if you have that kind of expectations. Animals didn’t come too close to us and some of them remained behind the wire fences but we could see all of them in a fairly close proximity and get an experience that you won’t have at the zoo, both on the ride and inside the aviaries. I would say that visit was well worth the time and money. Driving back and forth to the park is a pleasure, too, whether you come from Napa or any other destination. I would recommend paying a visit if you like nature and are interested in learning more about African animals and their natural habitat, regardless of whether you have children or not. The place seems to be well-loved and you can’t help but relate.
We took the 2 p.m., 3 hour Safari tour. It was a lovely trip and worth the cost for us. The animals were beautiful and it was fun to ride around amongst the beautiful green rolling hills. We booked on a Friday in the winter, so although plenty of people and full, I could see how the summer months could be stifling and feel overcrowded. We went after days of rain, so the hills were green, the creeks flowing, and the animals excited to be out in the sun with the new spring growth. Thinking it was a midweek, and less crowded, the process of splitting people into groups for the tours, seemed to take longer than it should have. We were told to check in at 1:45 & we didn't get into our tour to close to 2:30. Maybe during the busier times, they have more employees and it goes a bit faster. We also booked the buffet lunch before the tour. The lunch was tasty enough for the price, and you get plenty of food. For vegetarians, there wasn't a lot of extra choices. However, there was plentiful green salad & asparagus with mushrooms. My husband said the asparagus was too salty. The potato salad was full of mayonnaise, and they put sugar and pineapple in the ranch beans. If you're a meet eater, there was plenty of BBQ chicken and pulled pork, with little white rolls that you could make sandwiches out of. The tea, coffee, and hot chocolate was included. The plus about eating lunch there is you get more time to look out at the animals, which is really what you're paying for. Again, all of the outside tables were full, so busier times you would have to eat inside. The cost for booking on line, tour and lunch came to $274.27. Somewhat pricey for an afternoon. The bonus is, you can walk around as much as you want for that price. So we got there early and viewed all of the animals that were caged. Pretty much what you will get to see if you spend the night. Although, I'm sure the sunrises and sunsets looking out at the animals is beautiful. They put the giraffes in the barn at night, so you won't be looking out at them. Santa Rosa is close enough that you could find more cost effective lodging if you're worried about the expense. If money is not a concern, I'd be into spending the night. More time watching animals is always a good thing.
Super fun! Highly recommend the Jeep ride! Got to see baby rhino Ozzy!
A delightful and highly curated experience for all visitors. For those lucky enough to snag an overnight in one of the safari tents on property, an even more elevated experience awaits. From the moment they arrive, guests are cared for with concierge-level service as one would expect of any proper safari camp. Employees are friendly, capable, good-natured, knowledgeable, hard-working, and very proficient at assisting you on your journey into (and out of) the Sonoma Serengeti. As this is a place that contains wild animals in close proximity to humans, I fully appreciate the need to manage guests carefully and in an efficient manner. Staff there have turned this potentially overbearing task into an art. Visitors are made to feel like welcomed and pampered guests at a place entirely removed from everyday life. This care for the Visitor Experience comes down to the details, such as cleanliness and accessibility, both of which are top-notch. Here it also shows in the small touches, such as the coffee cups waiting for you at the door of the Elephant Room, with great drip coffee and tea available for guests for much of the day and night. It shows in the care placed in the provisioning and physical layout of the tents - umbrellas, toiletries, heated blankets and a comprehensive guest guide worth reading cover to cover await, a comfortable chair by the door for dealing with shoes, and a cooler outside to keep food and drinks cool with ice provided gratis. And everywhere, high quality furnishings and art help set the mood, putting you in the perfect space to enjoy the near presence of the African animals living there. The animals are clearly well cared for and loved, and wildlife outreach is most definitely a priority for the Lang family. This last weekend was their Halloween event, and it was a delight to be welcomed as an adult to learn about all sorts of animals, and even touch/hold some of them! Notable employees: Georgie who laughed with me when I was dancing with Stella, Shawn who remembered us from our last visit and once more extended amazing hospitality, John who led our "grown-up" tour, and Amy who made our dining experience special with a great bottle of wine and a romantic table. Bottom Line: Go if you can, stay if you can! An amazing and unique experience. We will be back!
Safari West is a far better experience than going to the zoo, even though it is the same concept except you're in an open jeep. However, distinguishing factors are: 1. Animals roam over many acres and you can get very close to buffalos, wildebeests, zebras, and more. 2. The bird sanctuary is unique because the birds roam in the same space that you walk through. 3. The driving experience allows the kiddos to focus more on the animals than get tired out by walking and the guide provides great insight for each exhibit. 4. The lunch experience was actually quite good, and worth the cost after driving around for 2.5 hours. Highly recommended!
Spending Night in the tent with animals around is an amazing experience. Kids loved a lot. Breakfast is awesome. Waking up in the morning because of Rooster and other animals is so refreshing. It's definitely worth staying here.
I am so glad I chose to stay here. From the moment we checked in the staff was so amazing. My dad needs a wheelchair and they accomodated that amazingly. The safari guide even pushed him on the walking part. They guide my parents rides to and from the room when needed and we're always so kind and helpful. The breakfast lady offered to warm up my mom's pastry...I just can't say enough of the staff. The safari was amazing. The guide was wonderful with the group that had kids and very knowledgeable about the animals. He reminded me of Jack Black on Jumanji. If you stay, take a walk around the animals around dusk. They get so talkative and the bats come out and sweep right over your head it was amazing. Loved every bit!!!
Amazing experience! We had an especially great time on our behind the scenes tour with our guide, Chris. I think spending the night in one of the tents adds a lot to the overall experience and is a must for the first time visitor. We may return for another safari trip or behind the scenes excursion in the future.
Justin was our tour guide and he was GREAT! Guides can make or break an experience and he definitely made ours. Wonderful, well taken care of animals. And the food was unexpectedly great! 10/10 would recommend.
We didn’t stay and spend the night. Just did the safari. Was a great experience. Animals looked healthy and happy. Great property all around. Well kept and guide was really good and patient answering all the questions from my 6 year old.
So Yesterday 4/22/25 my 5 children and I went to the safari west for the first time . We had a blast we had Cyndy as I Tour Guide and she did and Amazing job . Can’t feed the animals but you can get close enough it makes you wanna reach out and pet one lol !! This was truly a great experience I recommend 10/10

Rhino meet and greet was once in a lifetime. Thank you for curating such an epic experience and above all, thank you soo much for what you do for these exquisite creatures!
This is a wonderful family experience. We saw all kinds of animals on the tour: exotic birds, giraffes, antelope, rhino, Impala, zebra, gazelle, and more. Our guide Robert was fantastic, friendly and knowledgeable. He's worked there for 30 years and answered all our questions. Some of the animals came right up to the truck, making for incredible photo opps. Loved it!
Visited with my wife and 6 year old for the Safari tour and it was one of the best experiences with animals we ever had. Not only you feel like you're in their habitat but you also learn a ton about each animal in your way. We had a couple of amazing guides and it was clear how each staff member cared about us having a great time and, more importantly, about all the animals there. We booked lunch right after our tour, which was convenient and delicious. Highly recommended!
Amazing experience. We got to see every animal except for one or two of the small animals on the walking portion. My boyfriend and I sat on the top and our guide was knowledgeable and enthusiastic about her work. We could tell she enjoys her job and loves the animals.
Stayed in the hillside tent and it was tranquil and super comfortable. The bathroom and the tent was quite spacious and the amenities make it feel like truly luxurious glamping. The safari was great too. More kid friendly place than a romantic getaway but still beautiful. Would return even though it’s a little pricey.
Wonderful safari experience. Only think ice recommend is picking a warmer day. It was freezing. They provided blankets but that didn’t help me much. Glad we did it. Our tour guide was great and unfortunately I forgot his name. Getting up close with some of these animals was cool. Definitely recommend on a warmer day with a group of people. They have little rooms you can rent out too however they were not rented due to the season I guess. We had our own airbnb and just drove 30 mins to Safari from Kenwood so wasn’t bad at all. Beautiful grounds!
We are locals and had never been here despite driving by all the time. We decided to not stay over night but to do the safari only for my birthday. I am 57 and my hubby is 70. We had a blast! This tour is set for all ages but please be aware of physical limitations. There is walking and the riding tour is bumpy since it's on back roads that are unpaved and the safari trucks are older. SO MUCH FUN and well worth the money. Kara our tour guide was amazing! She went above and beyond with her stories and natural tempo that sounded real and not a canned tour speech. We really loved this experience and would highly recommend. Next time we will spend the night for the experience in the yurts.
Absolutely fascinating animals in a very clean and organized environment! Our tour guide Richard has plenty to say about his love for these incredible creatures and the place. I didn't spend the night, but my brother was in one of their tents for two nights, and the beds were comfy yet quite cold at night.
Taking the safari is well worth the price. It's a 3 hour tour combining a long jeep ride through the 400 acre preserve and a 45 min easy walking tour after the ride that takes you with the guide through parts not accessed walking alone such as the great aviary. I opted for lunch reservations when getting tix online bc you HAVE to have advance reservations so they know how many to cook for that day. Food was delicious. Bbq style fare. Asked detailed questions about the animals and care and the guide pointed out that she only wished her healthcare was as good as the animals receive lol. Will be going back and doing the glamping tent!
Safari West is the premier wildlife destination to experience an authentic African safari in the heart of California! It's great for families, kids and animal lovers alike. Go on safari and climb aboard a safari vehicle for a guided exploration of the Sonoma Serengeti. Round out your tour by taking a stroll through their vast aviary and come face-to-face with additional animal encounters. Elevate your experience further and spend the night in a deluxe African-tented camp complete with a private viewing deck, bathroom and all the calls of the wild. Our package also included a delightful dinner at the Savannah Cafe and a continental breakfast. We enjoyed an unforgettable experience at Safari West and my photos only capture part of it, so go check out the 400-acre wildlife sanctuary and the nearly 1K animals living on it for yourself!
My whole experience at safari west was enjoyable but there was one person in particular who made the trip truly magical. Our tour guide Gina was absolutely amazing! This women deserves praise and a raise. She went above and beyond the whole tour. She was fun and informative and whenever a question was asked she didn’t know the answer to she radioed the other employees for an answer. I was sitting on a bench with my brother and she came over and asked if she could take a picture of us on my phone because we looked so cute together, that was such a sweet and thoughtful gesture that was really appreciated. Thank you Gina for the excellent tour!
Came here for the safari and overnight stay to celebrate a birthday and I’m glad for the experience! The staff here are so nice. Shout out to Killian who was the most amazing guide we could ask for! You could tell how much they love their job. They were so knowledgeable about every animal on the property and were even able to put a smile on a cranky kid by the end of our tour. Killian also knows a lot about the area and provided local facts that I found to be interesting. If you don’t have problems with heights, put on a hat and sit on the top of the trucks! While I didn’t expect the Four Seasons out here, the tents were clean and comfortable. They have bathrooms with running water and a nice porch area for after-dinner chats or just staring out into space. They provide water and ice on the property for you as needed. It was quite hot when we visited (I believe 94F or. so) and the ceiling fan wasn’t doing it for me, even with all the window coverings off. However, it cooled off nicely at night. It was quite cold in the morning, but they pack the room with plenty of blankets and a space heater to keep you comfortable. I will say that people who constantly need to be connected to the internet will probably find themselves parked towards the entrance of the property because the WiFi in the tents was too intermittent for me, but I had a good book to keep me occupied. I would definitely recommend the experience at least once. If not for the love of animals, then for a chance to get away from the city without having to actually go too far.
The way that I plant this trip for my kids was check in with a dinner reservation and stay overnight. Then the following morning had the tour. Check in was super friendly and they offered me a ride up to the tent since I was pregnant with my two kids and luggage. They were super nice from the get-go and spent a lot of time talking to my kids. Dinner was fabulous and it was buffet style. They truly knew customer service and treated my kids with care during dinner as well. There's an area to play cornhole as well as the ability to walk around and see some of the animals yourself. I then went back up to our tent and prepped everything and relaxed until 8:00 p.m. s'mores. Follow the directions that they give you such as if you're going to be out at night to make sure that you turn on the lights. It goes from dusk to dark relatively quick and even in the summer the temperatures drop to high 50° or so. They have heaters and heated blankets but make sure that you bring a pair of pants and a sweater because it does get chilly first thing in the morning too. Breakfast was great and filling. The Safari tour is everything. My tour guide was Killian (sorry if the spelling is wrong) and made the Safari tour similar to jungle Cruise in Disneyland. My kids were treated with respect and I was able to witness professionalism and courtesy while handling negative behaviors as well as significant positive reinforcement to Great behaviors. My 4-year-old was getting wiggly and Killian went the extra mile to create almost like horse reins to get my son to pretend that he was steering the Jeep. Both of my kids were given significant opportunities to be involved in the Safari, ask questions, and at one point even smell poop 😂. I truly believe that whoever is guiding the Safari could really make it or break it. Killian was not only funny, kind, and paid attention to taking breaks, but the relationship between Killian and the other tour guides showed that this place was a place of adventure as well as a great place to work. Killian showed great camaraderie, humor, and even paid attention to my kids sensory seeking behaviors. This was my very first trip by myself with my kids and both of them are under 10. This was by far the best glamping experience and Safari and I'm super grateful. I I jumped at the opportunity for adventure. Thank you Sarah West for great customer service, but above all treating my kids with respect and kindness. As a parent, how's staff treat? My kids can completely change how my experience is and you absolutely rocked it.
Absolutely amazing safari on a 1950s truck. You can almost touch a giraffe and see other animals up close. Very fun, our guide Kyle really made it come to life even more.
We LOVED it here. This has been on my Bucket List for 15 years, and it was SO worth it. We went as a group of 7. It was rainy and stormy when we arrived and cleared up overnight for our Safari Tour the next day. Bring warm clothes if you get cold easily. The tents are a GREAT experience (we chose the Hillside tents), and while the canvas tents keep warm, the attached bathroom is cold! The animals and birds are super chatty all through the night, so we didn't get much sleep (we didn't expect to get much sleep anyway, though). Staff are helpful and friendly. Dinner was great (even for me as a vegetarian and a guest as Gluten Free), the conservation talks are informative, the included breakfast was wonderful (including Easter Egg dying because we went Easter weekend), and our Safari Guide, Carson, went above and beyond our expectations. He was enthusiastic and passionate, and we were super impressed. You can tell he LOVES his job. You can see all the animals are very well cared for. We all had a great time. Thank you!!!
The tour guide,Robert was so funny and knowledgeable. He answered all my questions and I had the best time! Thank you Robert!
Great time had by all. We celebrated my husband's 70th birthday with an overnight stay and a safari tour the next morning. Two seniors, 2 adults and 2 kids (5 and 7) Booked a family tent that slept 6. Checkin was easy, they gave us flashlights and drove our luggage to and from our tent. It was large, clean, had running water, a separate toilet and small shower, a room heater and all beds had electric blankets. The deck, overlooking the giraffe pen, was large and we enjoyed playing cards together. The kids explored on their own and especially loved the cheetahs, beautiful birds and lemurs. We should have booked the dinner then too as it was sold out so we had to drive 20 minutes into town to eat dinner on Father's Day..my mistake. Enjoyed s' mores by their large fire pit and watching The Jungle Book in the back room. Night time was filled with cool animal sounds and early morning rooster calls. We enjoyed them as they added to the ambience. Breakfast was included, eggs, oatmeal + fixings, cereal, fruit, coffee, tea, hot chocolate Safari was at 10:00 a.m. and well worth the extra fee for 3 hours of animal sightings and educational narration by Dano of their life stories and habits around the 400 acres. Afterwards, we shopped in the cool gift shop too. True, cell service is limited but they do have wifi available. An excellent opportunity to unplug for 24 hours. Staff were great, helpful and knowledgeable. Tina went above and beyond to make our 3rd time there exceptionally memorable. We will be back in a few years.
We didn't stay overnight, but we did go on the 2 hour jeep safari. We had a great time and saw a large variety of animals. Our guide was very informative on all the animals and pointed out interesting things along the way. In addition, our guide took us on an hour- long walking tour through other animal exhibits including a large aviary. The grounds are well kept and many of the animals have large, open areas to wander. It was a great experience!
Always a blast to see animals in their natural habitat. Our tour guide Erick was a wealth of information. He said he only started working there around 2 years ago but the guy accumulated serious knowledge! Very impressive. If you have kids or if you are just a nature fan, this is a treat, albeit not a cheap one.
Didn't stay the night but would if we could! Had a fantastic day exploring the park with super informative and fun guide Jeff ☺️ The place was clean and the critters seemed happy, lots of babies! Much more friendly and intimate than places like the Oakland zoo
This is a review for the "Behind the Scenes" tour that my family and went on. We decided to do this instead of the jeep/ safari ride out into the park as it was much more interactive with the animals. It was FANTASTIC! My family and I had the best time and it was such a unique experience to feed the warthogs, giraffes, porcupines and birds with Megan (our Safari West guide). I HIGHLY recommend this for any one but especially as a family activity as it is one I will always remember! Just Amazing!
Fun day trip for family. Our guide Carson was great, loved the detail explanation and he was quite knowledgeable , knew all animals by name and knew their history at the place. Recommend wearing something warm if you plan to go in spring.
My husband and I visited Safari West today, and it was an incredible experience! The tour was amazing, and we owe so much of that to our wonderful guide, Kimberly. Her knowledge of every animal in the park was truly impressive, and she patiently answered all of our questions. She also kept the trip fun with her warm smile and great sense of humor. Thanks to her, we walked away with a much deeper appreciation and understanding of these animals.
This place is Amazing! An absolute MUST. Went for my birthday. Stayed in a tent cabin. It was wild and wonderful. The safari trek was so interesting and uninhibited. All of the animals out on the back acreage are truly wild. In their element and it is incredible. The folks guiding are informative and helpful. There were younger children in our group and the guide was good to them , answering questions and keeping them focused. They also did not just cater to them, allowing all on the trip to have a good experience, which to me was important because it is pricey and was a special gift for my 50th b-day. The food served was so so. Not spectacular, it was part of a package. There are no other places near by to eat so if you go for the day be sure to pack picnic / snacks etc.. The place is rustic and out in the middle of nowhere, BUT that is a good thing because it keeps it real. It can also get pretty hot out there so prepare for this too. The day trip is really an all day thing. If you have time / resources, the over night trip is awesome! Just go- it is so worth it!
I took my eight-year-old to Safari West for her birthday, and it was awesome! Everyone was so nice from the moment we arrived. Our guide was super fun and told us everything about the animals. It's way better than a zoo! If you want a real safari, this is the place to go. And the lunch? Totally worth it.
You will absolutely adore your time here. Whether you’re doing a safari or also staying on site, you are bound to have the best time. There are so many amazing animals and such kind and helpful humans working with them. You really feel the love here. We had a sleepover with our son and his bff and we had the best time just hanging out on the property for the evening. The food was pretty good too! Don’t waste your time on the cocktails though.
I could not have had a better experience. We had such a great tour guide, McKenna. She was very knowledgeable, friendly and put up with all my questions. I felt like a gr little kid, having the best day ever! My weakness is animals and I could have stayed there all day. The whole staff was very helpful and welcoming. McKenna was definitely my favorite though. I really enjoyed learning about all these beautiful creatures. She really had her facts down. I hope she gets the praise she deserves. I will be bringing my daughter and mother next year when we're in town. Next time I want to stay there and try the café as well. Thank you Safari for all you do for the animals. You all are making a huge difference. Please tell McKenna I said thank you for being so awesome. My bf and I had a great time. My name is Tyne (with the snake shirt)
We booked a jeep tour for my brother in law's 50th birthday, and my expectations were blown out of the water by our guide Gina. She is experienced, hilarious, and made us feel super safe while still having a wonderful time. My brother in law has downs and is animal crazy so this was very much a dream come true for him. She was super kind and patient with him and all his questions, and when she didn't know the answer to a questions she would radio the team and find out in real time! We all had a fantastic time. You can really tell that the whole crew is super supportive of the animals in their care, and the whole place is very well run, clean and beautiful. Gina said she had only been working there since January, but you wouldn't even know it. She drove that jeep like a pro, and was able to give us all kinds of fascinating info on not just the animals we encountered on our tour, but about the region and history of the animals, or area, or anything really! She was super fun, had a great positive can-do attitude and a dazzling smile too! I have already let my parent's know that they can expect to join us for the next trip, as I am sure they would love it, and when we do book again, which will be soon, I will for sure be requesting Gina. Thanks Safari West!
I went to Safari West with two of my girlfriends as part of our annual get together, and I'm SO glad we did!! The safari was fantastic. Our guide (Michelle, I think?) was knowledgeable and personable, making time to answer everyone's questions. She also made every effort to make sure we saw ALL the animals, either by getting us to them, or telling us when we'd be most likely to see them in the morning (especially the hyenas and cheetahs). Our tent was lovely--very comfortable, with our own bathroom and deck area. The beds were comfortable, and the heater kept us warm all night. They provided ear plugs for everyone in the tent, as the animals do start making noise early, but aside from the rooster who decided to crow from the to of our tent, most of the noses were actually rather soothing. Dinner was SO much better than we'd expected, everything fresh and delicious, with very attentive and friendly servers. We didn't have breakfast on site, as we had to make our way to our next destination, so all we had was the coffee (which is, quite literally, the ONLY complaint we had). The staff was all helpful and accommodating, and all seemed to genuinely enjoy working there. The site is fantastic, although I'm not sure how accessible it would be for persons with mobility issues.
Been there many times but this time going through the Avery I learned more from the guide. Also tram into the back we got to see baby cattle, but can't think of there name. Big thick horns. And the food was excellent and plenty of it.
What a wonderful location and experience - you can truly tell that staff and management cares about the animals. The experience was excellent and the overnight camping exceeded my expectations. Safari West is a magical experience - highly recommend for families and couples.
Great fun! Tents were cozy! Safari was amazing, even in the rain! Guide Megan was fabulous! Food was good!
We did the tour this afternoon- Denise was fantastic, adding colorful descriptions and biological facts to our tour. She was great with kids too. Thanks Denise! #giveheraraise!!!
I've been here several times, once with friends then twice for staff outings. I've only been here for the day trip on private jeep tours. My favorite parts are seeing the zebras, giraffes, and Otto the baby rhino. There is a nice gift shop with so much to see and opportunity to spend lots of money. I booked the lunch and private tour this year and last year I did the reverse -tour then food. Coordinating a large group is a breeze and the staff are always super nice. The staff loved it last year and a larger group asked to go this year. After three visits, it's still a nice place to visit and learn new things. I didn't take any photos of the gift shop, small convenience store, or dining areas. I should also mention they have a large outdoor and indoor dining areas.
The in-laws took me, my wife and our two teen kids for a lunch and safari excursion and we all loved it! I had been here before about 7 years ago for an extended work conference, staying in a cabin for two nights, enjoying their conference room space and meals, and a safari drive. I am glad tooth my family to show them how magical the park is. The staff are very knowledgeable about the animals they caretake for, think of guest safety first and foremost, and make the day special. Lunch was an incredible buffet. It was in the 90s she everyone was especially careful to drink water, have sun protection, and reduce heat illnesses. And dole whips onsite!
We just toured the grounds... We did not stay the night. We had a great experience! Our guide Nicole was very knowledgeable and personable. They have an expansive property full of African hooved creatures. (That area is toured with 4 wheel vehicles). As well as many other small animals in nice display areas. Huge Aviaries and two areas housing Cheetahs. Highly recommend, it's worth the price of entry!
Amazing visit. We did the 3 hour classic safari with Michelle, as our guide driving the Colonel, 7/11/25 at 12. We were able to see all the animals. Everyone, including our 8y/o, had a great time setting on top of the truck watching the animals. We were able to get incredibly close to the animals. The animals looked to be in good health and we're not stressed at all.
Professional Operated with love of animals and families to see and experience. Clean, neat, and organized with gift shops and restaurant and picnic area. Fun filled family day!
An attraction worth experiencing! Over 400 acres, come during the week. The safari tours are less crowded and you get to experience a more enjoyable experience. Giraffes, rhinos, zebras, monkeys , lamas. Cheetahs, heinas …many African animals. Check Groupon for any specials. Best thing to do in Santa Rosa !!
This is the second time we ventured on this Safari up in the mountains of Santa Rosa, which is right next to the petrified forest. We opted for their lunch one hour prior to our Safari tour, which is a buffet. They also have a great wine selection. Now there is a four seater on the top of the vehicle which people will take turns if they choose to want to view from the top. The ride portion is two hours where you get to see 18 species and hundreds of animals starting with the giraffes the must see ostrich is the lazy rhinoceros and a bunch of antelope. It’s a nice ride very educational and after the ride, there is a 45 minute nature walk where you get to see some of the birds and their cheetah. The experience is well worth it. Tipping your driver is highly recommended. They are very knowledgeable and is what makes the tour more enjoyable.
What an incredible time we had at Safari West! The staff is helpful, informative and generally enthusiastic about their jobs which make for a wonderful experience. Safari West was the perfect combination of camping with some communal experiences like dining and tours, but with an intimate feeling given the private cabins/tents. Check in was a breeze, we were driven up to our cabin in a jeep, and the instructions for keeping warm were so helpful. All aspects of accommodations are so well curated from the heated blankets and room heaters to stay warm at night to the ice coolers and bags of ice to help cool off during the heat. What I found to be the most surprising, but impressive flex was the food - I would come back for the food alone. Everything we had was incredible - ribs were perfectly smoked, corn salad was crisp and fresh, and the bbq (they could make a whole line of business with this sauce alone) was to die for. The kids loved the s’mores, the tour, and the ability to roam free at night with little flashlights provided at check-in. We can’t wait to visit again soon! Well done, Safari West!
Cannot say enough great things about this place. This was my 3rd time visiting and just as amazing as the first many years ago. This was a work event and from the second we checked in to the time we left it was flawless ! We had a very large group of 36 so 3 jeeps. The guide we had was a fun young man, I think named Jake. Full of information and super patient with all of our questions and he drove that jeep masterfully. The lunch we had was delicious - not sure if it's the same selection of food that is served in their smaller café but everything was great. Thr salad with strawberries was to die for. All of the staff were helpful and very sweet. One day I will experience the overnight stay!
If you’d like to enjoy yourself with an experience that feels like you’re in Africa for the day, please come visit Safari West. The tour was informative and amusing. There were so many creatures to view: flamingos, tortoises, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests and more. I was able to hold an emu egg and was almost drooled on by a giraffe due to our proximity to the animals! Children and adults will enjoy this safari tour. There are areas to sleep overnight and they did serve lunch or dinner as an option with the ticket. The food was delectable, I went for seconds! Our tour guide, Megan was fantastic, she was knowledgeable and lovely to have. Enjoy 💕
Amazing overnight excursion. We came for the 2 pm tour, which was perfect because the animals were feeding and more active. The weather was temperate which I am sure also helped. Then we checked into our room which was neat and clean. Then we had a few hours to walk around and look at the animals in the open viewing areas one more time before we sat down to dinner at 7:00 which was a delicious array of well cooked chicken and ribs, potatoes, vegetables, bread, salad. Pretty much anything you could want with the generous serving thing. Is this in their buffet? You can purchase alcoholic beverages or sodas for an additional fee, but they do have hot beverages like hot cocoa, coffee and tea complimentary. Then after dinner they have a s'mores station which was so much fun for my 11-year-old daughter and after that we went into the elephant room to watch a viewing of Madagascar which was just a nice way to end the evening and then off to bed to sleep in very, very comfortable. Very warm beds that provided the exact level of comfort you needed. After a day out on the Savannah in the morning they had a very generous again complimentry breakfast which did include eggs which was a nice surprise and after that check out was at 11:00. So you still had time to go back to your room shower pack? Relax on the veranda, do the animals again. And say goodbye to a beautiful experience. We would definitely do it again
Angelica was very knowledgeable and natural as our guide! We had an amazing time feeding the giraffes, warthogs, porcupines and birds!! We stayed overnight and enjoyed the amenities! Be aware that you are sleeping in the middle of nature with wild geese protecting their eggs and young, so they make a lot of noise throughout the night! Room does come with earplugs. Yes, we did take sleeping pills too! Otherwise, bed , and shower water pressure was great and hot! Wonderful stay!
I can’t believe that as a lifelong resident of Sonoma County, this was my first time visiting Safari West, and let me tell you what an incredible experience I had! From start to finish, everything exceeded my expectations. A huge shoutout to our tour guide, Carson — he was absolutely fantastic! Incredibly knowledgeable, passionate about the animals, and able to answer every question we threw at him. You can tell he truly loves what he does, and it made the tour that much more engaging. Safari West, if you’re reading this… give that man a raise! There were so many baby animals, which made the experience even more special, especially getting to see Ozzy, the baby rhino! Also, big shout out to the friendly staff in the gift shop and the snack shack, you were all very welcoming and helpful. I genuinely enjoyed every part of my visit and can't wait to come back again!!
Excellent experience. Learned a lot about African wildlife. The food is great (we had great grilled food as part of their dinner). Staff is friendly. Our safari guide Kyle was knowledgeable. Our tent #18 had a spectacular view of the antelope enclosure. (I think it’s the best sited tent.) Our tent had a king bed and lots of room. The attached bathroom had great hot water. Wasn’t too cold in there (we were there in May.) Would highly recommend both the safari tour and the accommodations.
We really enjoyed our stay. Our group was 2 kids (4 yrs and 1 yr), my husband, my mom and myself. We really enjoyed being able to see all the animals. My husband and 4 year old went on a jeep safari and had an amazing time. Be warned it is a 3+ hour tour. We also did a behind the scenes tour and this was the highlight of the trip. We got to have a one-on-one tour and got to feed a bunch of animals. The highlight was feeding the giraffes at the end. Overall it was an amazing experience and we will likely be back when my now 1 year old is closer to 5 or 6.
With the pictures alone, everyone thought we were really in Africa. We loved everything about Safari West. It was our first time "glamping." We stayed for our first honeymoon night here. We made it just in time for dinner. The check-in service was impeccable and easy. They jeeped us to our room. We had tent 17, which has a great view of the animals, including giraffees, right from our porch. Complimentary waters in a chest with ice. I didn't know what to expect, and what I honestly envisioned wasn't even close. We had a king bed with multiple layers, including a heated blanket with 2 remotes on either side, side lamps with plugs for our phones, wifi, a room heater, shower, and a toilet. We were able to go see all the animals on our own until 9:30pm that were accessible. That was so cool, I kept going back to look at the hyenas and the cheetahs. Dinner was a buffet style with fruit as appetizer, salad, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, bouquets with butter, tri tip, baked chicken, asparagus with cucumber served with a Sherlly Temple and water. Then there was dessert, which was a sundae, and then s'more. Then they played Madagascar on a huge screen. I had a cup of hot chocolate. It was great to see how the animals got comfortable and went to sleep on the way back to our tent. It's so dark there you can see the stars, it was beautiful. In the morning, you can hear the animals, and it was cool, but if you need quiet, they do provide ear plugs! In the morning we had breakfast. For me, I chose oatmeal with brown sugar, orange juice, a pastry, scrambled eggs, and toast. Then we packed. They jeeped us to our car. The souvenir store was nice, and checkout was very easy. Then we went on the safari. Kyle was our tour guide, and we rode on Clifford. It was so cool, Kyle is so knowledgeable and funny. If we could do it again, we would just ride on the bottom. Nonetheless, we had a great experience. We'll be sharing this experience and spreading the word to go to this great gem we stumbled upon. Thank you all at Safari West.
Far exceeded our expectation. Even my 4 and 9 y/o enjoyed it very much. The off road vehicle they have had for 70 years are quite amazing. They have their own sanitation, gas station, “poop patrol” and mechanics etc. 35 years they have been in business the animals were so amazing and gets super close to your vehicles. I’ve never been to Africa but this felt like I went to Africa. 400 acres and 900 animals with 99 species were amazing. Great visit. FYi it was freezing on Valentine’s Day, but they offered blankets and we shared.
Amazing experience. I have older children all in their early to late teens. They loved it. We had John as our guide and he cracked jokes, was super informative, and gave a great tour around the area. Myself and my children rode on top of the tour jeep and had a great view of everything around us. We were not disappointed. Whether you have older children or younger, this is a great place to take them for a day out. Plan on spending around 3hrs on the tour if you book it, some walking, and is pretty rough on the trail but very enjoyable. Definitely bring snacks with you or book the buffet as there aren't many resturaunts around the area is my only big recommendation.
I cannot say enough good things about our trip to Safari West. The animals are so well cared for, with their environments tailored to their health and well being (some photos are taken with zoom and may make things look more caged in than they actually are). Taking a turn on top of the truck was daunting but cool, and getting to feed the residents on the behind the scenes tour was amazing. So grateful to Schea in reservations and our awesome guide Michelle for making a special day for us a memory we'll treasure forever.
Our visit to Safari West was truly unforgettable, and it was one of the most special experiences I’ve ever shared with my son. From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in an environment that felt both adventurous and thoughtfully designed, with incredible animals, stunning scenery, and a real sense of care for conservation and education. Seeing my son’s excitement as he spotted giraffes, zebras, and rhinos up close was priceless—this is the kind of experience that creates lifelong memories. My favorite were the Two female ostrich. They definitely gave us a good show. What truly elevated our visit, though, was our guide Killan. She was absolutely phenomenal and made the entire safari come alive. Her knowledge was impressive, but what really stood out was her enthusiasm, warmth, and ability to connect with both adults and kids. She explained everything in a way that was engaging and easy to understand, answered every question with patience and passion, and made sure everyone felt included and excited. My son was completely captivated by her stories and insights, and it was clear how much she genuinely loves what she does. Killan’s energy, professionalism, and kindness turned a great experience into an exceptional one. Safari West is a must-visit, especially for families, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you’re lucky enough to have Killan as your guide, you’re in for something truly special. We left with full hearts, amazing photos, and memories we’ll be talking about for years to come. Thank you, Safari West—and especially Killan—for such an incredible experience! PS: we will definitely be planning a future trip to come back and go glamping.
Tent glamping and a safari tour at Safari West have been on my bucket list for more than a decade and it did not disappoint. It's not a cheap way to spend a weekend but it was definitely worth it. The animal sounds you hear through the tent walls at night make you think you could be in Africa.
I took my family to Safari West for Thanksgiving. There were 13 of us from 9 months to 82 years. We ate at 12pm. The food was excellent. The service perfect and tables were beautifully decorated. And to cap it off we all got to stroll around see the wild animals. The kid's, 5 of my greats aged 9mo, 1, 2 3 and 4 loved seeing them as well as the adults. Also, the cost was reasonable. What a wonderful day!
Such a nice spot, a hidden gem. My ex wife Suzie would have loved it here. Their website is jank, but our marriage wasn’t. They do no advertising, just like I don’t advertise that I’m divorced. This place was such a fun stay, it feels like a slice of Africa transported to Sonoma. Room 18 in antelope alley is the best, I booked it three months in advance and woke up to views and noises from antelope, I almost felt like it was Suzie snoring - lol. Unique and fun experience that recommend for all. Be sure to stay the night for the full experience, Suzie if you see this I’d be willing to go back.
I took my daughter's girl scout troop they are all 9 year olds. 2 siblings joined as well. 1 sibling was too young for the guided tour so mom and him walked around and still had tons to see. The girls were split on 2 trucks with their parents and everyone had an amazing time. Killian and Eric were the best guides anyone could ask for. Both hilarious and kept everyone engaged with facts and jokes. I know the girls in our truck were sitting up top and had the BEST view. The back row, just as amazing. While it was so cold, they had blankets for everyone to use and all the animals were out.
Absolutely loved the wildlife safari in the midst of wine country. Justin was our guide and he was super cool and super good. Loved the way he interacted with all the guests in his safari vehicle. He's a gem. The wild animals are kept in enclosures, some closed enclosures like the cheetahs, the rhino, the giraffes...and some in open spaces like the zebras, the antelopes...The avian enclosure is also very good. Of the animals the cheetahs I felt were the star attraction. The way Justin explains the behaviour, the nature, the habits of the different animals and birds is just awesome. And his one liner jokes and the quiz questions for the guests while on his truck is too good. The snacks store is also well stocked up, the hot chocolate is the one to go all out for. The souvenir store is cool. Sure to do an overnight stay over at the place next time.
We did the overnight glamping experience for a birthday/retirement party. The beef Brisket buffet dinner was excellent. We'll seasoned melt in your mouth Brisket and chicken buffet had vegan options. Chocolate desserts and camp fire smores. The tents were surprisingly cozy. Electric blankets are provided alone with portable space heaters. Nice hot showers attached to the tent. The only drawback is the bathrooms aren't heated. But sre well designed with natural wood & stone. Breakfast in the morning before our afternoon tour with educated guides in 4WD trucks. With everything from ring tailed lemurs, zebras,Watusi cattle, Rhinos and water buffaloes. This was my 3rd visit, but first overnight. I recommend the overnight experience.
We didn't stay in the cabins (they look nice), but everything else was chef's kiss. The guides and staff were cool, the food and vibes were good and the animals looked healthy and well cared for. We would like to go back for a behind-the-scenes tour the next time we visit. Very nice and peaceful place.
I enjoyed the weekend Glamping and marveling at the amazing animals. The experience was fantastic. The tent cabin was super cozy, the staff was friendly and professional. The onsite cafe served super tasty meals. You cannot get bored at Safari West, or go hungry. The experience is way different from that of a zoo, with the animals wandering freely around the property and in select fenced areas. The three hour safari ride around the property was fun and interesting, offering close up views of a number of animal I've only seen in books, on TV, or on YouTube. Treat yourself, your family and friends. Book a trip to Safari West.
We went for my birthday. We did the 2 pm reservation and 7pm dinner. Gina was our Tour Guide and she was amazing. She was very friendly, knowledgeable, and took my parties jokes well. We stayed the night in Tent 22 which was AWESOME! I loved that you could hear the wild life during the night. If you’re used to having a TV to watch you will not get that here. Dinner and breakfast were both delicious and all you can eat. They do make S’more and show a movie in the evening which is a nice treat. You can also go on night time exploring if you wish.
Our family stayed over night. Had dinner that evening & took the safari tour the next day. Dinner was excellent, the property was immaculate, and we loved the tour. Our tour guide, Cindy, was knowledgeable & worked hard to make sure we were able to see all the animals. The animals appeared to be well cared for. Our 4- year-old granddaughter had a blast walking through the property & visiting all the animals. A special thanks to the staff for holding onto a piece of luggage that the airline lost & then delivered after we departed.
I first heard about this safari from a coworker and knew I had to check it out. I booked my tickets online in advance and arrived about 15 minutes before my 1:00–4:00 pm tour. The experience began with a walking tour through the “zoo” area, where we saw a variety of African birds, a giant pigeon, cheetahs, and monkeys. After that, we boarded a large open-air truck/van for the safari ride. It was incredible being so close to the giraffes, ostriches, and many other animals. The safari spans 400 acres, and even in the moments when we weren’t spotting wildlife, the scenery was absolutely beautiful. I’m so glad we came—it was such a memorable experience, and I’d definitely love to bring friends and family here in the future.
We held our annual team outing at Safari West and it was so much fun! We had 3 private tour jeeps to accommodate our large party. Our tour guides were very knowledgeable about the park and all of the wildlife occupying the park. It was very clear to see and hear the passion they have for the animals, the care that they provide, and the team that they work with. After our tour, we immediately had lunch that was set up for us in the dining area. The food was very delicious and offered a variety of options. Thank you, Safari West for such an incredible time!
First off - ask for Bianca! She was so fun and even more knowledgeable. Our group was so impressed with how much she had to teach us and I loved that she was so passionate. She’s a great driver and also really wonderful at opening and closing all the gates with ease. We had a private tour since there were 10 of us, mom, dad, adult kids, and grandkids, one of which is too young to go on the public tours. I don’t know how regular tours work, since I had only ever been once years ago for a school trip, but on the private tour, we were able to go at our own pace, spend more time with the animals our group was especially excited about. That meant some extra time with Ozzie! We also ate lunch afterwards and I was pretty impressed with the food. I wasn’t sure what to expect with a buffet but it was tasty. I definitely plan to come back, hopefully to stay the night and wake up early to hear the morning birds. Thanks, Bianca!
We spent two nights at Safari West and it was a cool different experience for me and my family. The rooms were basically like glamping, and you can definitely hear animals at night. The safari tour was knowledgeable. The area is huge with a wide variety of animals. Reservations are required to dine at the restaurant. It’s a buffet with a plated dessert at the end. There is a bonfire for s’mores every night.
If you're doing this with smaller kids and are local it's fun. Older kids or just adults may find it a bit on the smaller side and not too interesting. But we took our 7 year old and she said the jeep tour was a ton of fun. Plus the baby animals they have were just the cutest thing. The guide, Kara, was awesome. She had a ton of interesting things to tell us about all the animals and about the property itself. I'd probably have a slightly lower rating if it wasn't for her and the time she took to show us everything and answer any questions. We will certainly be back to check out the cute cabins and the restaurant.
What a fun way to spend an afternoon in Wine Country, Calif. Located 1 hour north of Napa. Allow 3 hours. 1 hour walking tour and 2 hours in an open-air truck. Guides were super knowledgeable. Lots of exotic animals. They want to keep the animals wild, so no feeding or touching. You'll have free time afterward to wander the grounds and gift shop.
Finally went here after living in the area for YEARS. I'll say it was fun. Pricey. Loved the bird Avery being able to see and walk through it. Morgana the black swan is GORGEOUS. The staff were friendly and knowledgeable. Shout out to the kitchen crew who served and had to deal with entitled dummies during lunch. Staff seemed to like their job. The jeep ride was fun, and after overcoming my initial fear to sit on the top, I had a good time. I gave it 4/5 stars because I did not officially stay at the locations rentals. It was just a one day trip. For the most part it was a fun ride and experience. Except for the end where everything seemed to be cooped up in fenced areas, which made me feel bad for the animals.
Experience is amazing. Our tour guide Bianca was amazing.. she was knowledgeable with good sense of humor. Nice seat rotation policy. Great... But for the set of animals and overall it's pricey...
everything except the ANIMALS is good.. i mean come on.. No Big Cats? No Elephants? No Bears? not even monkeys? chimpanzees etc..NONE! whatsoever.. we were actually regretting picking it over the local zoo. but it was good day to be out so we still had a great time while looking at handful of giraffes and zebras.. although must admit, being in California one of the largest and wealthiest state… we surely deserve better. hilarious phrase of the day came from our tour guide, when she announced at the end of our jeep ride after she’s shown us bulls and antelopes after 99% of the ride is over, she goes- “Look! over there Mountain Lions ‘use to’ pass that place at night” seriously ? i mean wouldn’t it better to say - “Dinosaurs past that very space! you know” we will just think about that and get our money’s worth of excitement. 😏
It's a worth visit for wildlife lover. Exploring the safari west in night was real fun with flash lights. Day time safari tour was adventurous. Close encounter with many animals. No food options for Indian vegetarian. Breakfast was complimentary but unfortunately the staff was clueless about the ingredients in bread items thats why giving 3 stars. Hope they start providing some vegan options too for egg allergies people.
To start with it was a disappointing experience, I had a lot of hope with this safari, it was a total three years experience with two hours in the truck and 45 minutes walk. The animals that you would see here are the white rhino. Giraffe zebra , cape buffalo and different types of antiliers that would be on the two hour truck journey. The Guide would talk about all the animals where are they from? What they do what they eat, which was a fun part . In the walk you would see 2 cheetah , monkeys, different types of birds. The bird section was quite interesting. Overall, I felt that for $132 per person this experience was not worth it.
Being from Sonoma County I had never been and now having a 4 year old that has a true love for animals- we finally decided to take the safari. I might also have had high expectations because my husband and I were lucky enough to go on a Safari in Kenya, though I know this is not the same. Pricing was a bit steep so my expectations matched the pricing as well. We did the 10am safari- 3 adults and 2 kids. The staff all seemed to really enjoy what they did and seem truly happy with the jobs which is always nice to see and translates to good service. We had a younger guide who doesn’t work often and just seemed a little out of practice. Now for the actual property/preserve and animals, extremely underwhelming. Most of the time you are driving and enjoying the views of Sonoma County but I can do that driving myself- the land the animals live on doesn’t not seem to be what they should have, I am not an expert but two cheetah in about 4-5000 sq foot enclosure with a rock and grass- you can see the trail around the inside perimeter the have created trying to “form” there territory which is what they do in the wild but for 20 square miles of land. I know we are talking about a preserve and not the wild but even this was sad to see. The SF Zoo does a better job of forming a more natural habitat and enclosure for these animals. Just overall underwhelming- for my expectations (which I can admit were probably too high) and the price as too steep. I would rather have have had a shorter tour and cut the scenic time, show me the animals you do have - you could probably do that in 1.5 hr and charge me 1/2 the price and I would have likely rated higher.
Garbage overpriced pretend zoo, my daughter missed out on the full tour because we were forced to have a really bad female tour guide who apparantly hates children. Half of my daughter's class got to have a full tour with a great male tour guide, and my daughters half had to miss out when the whole entire class was acting the exact same. Don't waste your money if you have children, they might have to miss out on the full experience also because they act the way normal children act. I wish I could give less than 1 star, my family will never go back there
Our safari west tour was not that great. I was excited to be educated on the animals and came home to fact check some of the “animal facts” our tour guide said. Most of them were incorrect! Sometimes we got closer to other guides and could hear them, they were so much more informative! Can not recommend and feel like we overpaid for the experience we got. The tour guide was also a little mean. It was also 48 degrees and freezing.
As a very committed vegan, anticipating visiting an animal sanctuary, I was disappointed to see the menu dominated by animal flesh. I would have thought an animal sanctuary would be promoting kindness to all animals. Change of plans.
I stayed here once and had a great time. I came again and the power went out at night and I was freezing and barely slept. When I emailed them about my experience at home later they just wrote me off and ignored me and asked why I didn't complain at checkout. Still mad about the treatment especially for the price and received no apology even let alone any compensation. It's been awhile since that happened but it still makes me angry so I decided to write a review since that's clearly my only recourse. Will not stay again after that treatment and disregard over email. Think about how you treat people I shouldn't have to make a fuss in person to be acknowledged
