Opinions de Dumpling Depot Sunnyvale
It’s a bit cold inside but the tea was yummy and warm. The Santa Clara county dine out score is high indicating that this place is clean and safe. All the dishes we ordered were nice and delicious. A great range of vegetarian options. The bathroom is clean and all the paper and tissues are there.
Got the king pao chicken which was nice and spicy, as well as delicious. Also the mixed chowmein was great. For the price I’d give five stars. My first time eating here and I’ll be happy to try new dishes on the future
This place may look like a hole in the wall, but it serves fabulous dumplings and Chinese dishes. You just cannot go wrong with any of their dumplings, potstickers and hot-n-sour soup (generous portion). After every visit, I decide that next time I will try out their other dishes. Unfortunately I cannot go past their dumplings.😊
Classic hole-in-the-wall Chinese food restaurant. It’s all about the dumplings (obviously) and they are delicious! Hand-made—including the skin— same day, and the lamb filled ones are superb! The crab and pork soup dumplings were delicious! You won’t find anything quite like this in the local valley area. The tables and look are very simplistic, and the parking lot is small, but you aren’t going here for fancy trivial details. If amazing dumplings are your goal, this is the place for you!
High expectations for this place and I was not disappointed. The braised beef roll is exceptional. The dumplings are great, especially the lamb and chives. Spicy eggplant was good but I thought it came with tofu? So many things on the menu look good, next time I'll get fried rice, a noodle dish, salt and pepper fish, mapo tofu and green beans. Highly recommend!
Really great place in Sunnyvale to get dumplings. This is my go to for any sort of dumpling they have on the menu and they recently have started allowing indoor dining again. My favorite item on the menu is the beef pancake roll! Make sure it’s the roll that has the tender braised beef. I accidentally ordered the beef pancake when I meant to order the beef pancake roll, won’t make that mistake again!
Out of the way, has parking in front, street parking is available. Good food, no frills and generous portions. We got QQ noodles with dumplings and beef noodle soup. My boyfriend is picky about his Chinese food and he loves this place, we took home what we couldnt finish and he's going to use the broth again.
Update: the restaurant has definitely hit its stride since our original visit! Now it's organized and food doesn't run out. :) Besides the dumplings, I also tried the spicy beef noodles and it was very good too. ~~~~~ Here on a sat night, they were full and not able to handle the crowd. Came to try the soup dumplings, but they were out of that and all but 3 kinds of dumplings (all chicken). Also have to wait a while for everything and was never served any water or tea. The dumplings themselves were not bad, a little on the small side so 1 plate (12 dumplings) was not quite filling enough. Also was a little worried about its doneness since it's chicken and the restaurant was chaotic. We were not brave enough to order anything else because of the chaos. We may come try it again after they figure out how to handle the crowd, but will definitely wait a bit.
I think their strength is regular food not necessarily the dumplings. I expect thinner noodles wrapped around the filling and a soupy XLB. The chow mein was tasty as well as the walnut shrimp, kung pao chicken and eggplant with basil. The fried sesame seed rice balls with red bean filling was a nice treat.
solid spot for chinese food, though some dishes are definitely better than others! based on all of the dishes we tried, the dumplings were definitely our favorite—the skin is perfectly chewy, it’s a texture only achieved with fresh handmade skin. as someone who usually finds it a waste to order boiled dumplings at a restaurant, these were SO delicious and i would 100% come back to eat here just for the dumplings. the salt and pepper fish filet was also delicious; perfectly crispy and you could really taste the wok hei in the peppers and onions—only criticism is that it could have use a little more seasoning. next, the spicy wontons were solid, but just nothing too special. the lotus root salad was fine as well, good flavor and bery refreshing. our disappointment of the night was the dan dan noodles :( they came out looking SO promising but we just felt it was completely lacking in all flavor—there was no spicy/meaty/umami-ness, just a bit salty and vaguely creamy but no sesame taste. service was fast, ordering was easy—would come again for the dumplings!
We ordered two types of dumplings — fish and chive and pork and cabbage. The wrappers had a nice chewy texture and the dumplings were pretty good! I liked the fish and chive ones a bit better, but there are a whole host of filling options. Prices are pretty reasonable for the area. There is a 5% cash discount for orders over $15. Overall, a decent no-frills spot to get a variety of dumplings. We’ll probably come back to try some of their other offerings.
The Food The old soup dumpling place I used to frequent closed down, now I am in search of a new, better place. Dumpling Depot piqued my interest when I saw the variety of dumplings they offer. My friend and I ordered a bit between the two of us. - Shanghai Soup Dumpling (灌湯小籠包) - Pork Pot Sticker (豬肉鍋貼) - Pork Dumpling w/ Napa Cabbage (白菜豬肉水餃) - Beef Stew Soup Noodle (牛腩湯麵) The Shanghai Soup Dumpling, Pork Dumpling w/ Napa Cabbage, and Pork Pot Sticker were good. The soup dumplings were pretty consistent, and I liked the crispy of the pot stickers. The Beef Stew Soup Noodle had an interesting soup base, not sure how I feel about it. It was not bad, the beef and noodles had a good flavor. I would like to return another time to try some of their other dishes. The Miscellaneous The restaurant is in a small plaza so there is some parking available. The inside was not as large as expected, but there are still a decent amount of seats. The service for the food was quite reasonable, not a long wait. The staff I interacted with was sincere. They have quite the variety and selection on their menu. If you want to try everything it'll take a few visits. They also had Frozen Dumplings of various kinds, but those were cash only. Their prices are also reasonable when compared to other dumpling shops. Would recommend trying this place out for those that have dumpling cravings.
I stopped by this dumpling spot for a solo lunch on a weekend afternoon. It wasn’t packed, but there were a few tables occupied, and a steady flow of customers coming in and picking up Uber Eats orders. It’s a very small, super casual place — don’t expect a polished dining experience. There was one lady running the whole place, multitasking everything. She wasn’t particularly friendly, but she was managing it all on her own. Ordering was through a QR code, and I got pork soup dumplings and a boiled fish fillet in chili oil, Sichuan-style. The food took a bit of time, which suggested it was freshly prepared. The soup dumplings were hot and well made — very decent, though I’ve had better elsewhere. Still, solid and satisfying. The fish in chili oil came without rice, so I asked for some, and she brought it out. I’m not entirely sure whether that was added to the bill separately. There was a bit of confusion when she brought out another dish — sautéed shrimp dumplings — which I don’t think I had ordered. I had already taken a bite when she realized the mistake and mentioned it wasn’t mine. It was an awkward moment. In the end, I believe I was charged for everything. I didn’t argue, but it’s probably a good idea to double-check your bill before paying. That aside, the food itself was good. The fish was flavorful, Sichuan-style with peppercorn heat — it looks very oily, but it’s not overwhelmingly spicy. Portions were generous; I had leftovers to take home. Overall, decent food and good portion sizes, but just be mindful of what you’re being charged.
Total Score: 6.50 Bathroom: N/A Didn’t use bathroom Customer Service: 3.5/5 Nice and friendly and refilled waters Ambiance: 1/5 Saw a cockroach around the cold drinks refrigerator 🪳🪳🪳 Food: 4.25/5 Very good comfort food! Wished the skin was thicker on the 水饺 and the wrap was flatter in the 牛肉包饼. Wow: 0.5/1 Great classic Chinese food and great for quick and cheap bites There was an old white couple beside us and def were out of place but I appreciate them coming out of their comfort zone and trying new things. Total Score = (CS + 2*AM + 5*FOOD + WOW)/0.9
We went here for dinner. The order consisted of crab meat and pork soup dumpling, chicken dumpling w/ chive, chicken chow mein and boiled fish fillet in hot chilli oil. The dumplings were okay. The soup dumplings had meager quantity of soup in them. The chicken dumplings were very small in size. The chow mein was better compared to the dumplings and was well seasoned and the chicken in it tasted good. The boiled fish in chilli oil had less amount of fish and more of the english cabbage which gave the entree a sweetish taste which did not go well with the fish. Although true to it's name had the fish oil taste and was heavily garnished with garlic. They do not serve rice with the entree and needs to be ordered separately. A word of caution; the owners are not well versed in english so please be patient while talking to the staff here. I've noticed they tend to get loud when they do not understand or try to confirm something that they did not understand and it comes across as rude but I'm pretty sure that is not the intention. This place is good for a quick take out or snack. Ambience: Small place with limited tables most of which are dedicated to set out take out orders. It's neat and clean though. Quantity: Okay Parking: Limited Times visited: 1
i enjoyed the taste of the pork dumplings with napa cabbage, and appreciated the friendly waitress. however, i had violent food poisoning shortly after departing. i wouldn't come again.
Was misled by the ratings to try. The food quality is extremely poor. Would not recommend eating here. Walked in for lunch mid week so the place was not busy, the lady at the desk did not greet and just pointed to a random table to sit. Sat and scanned the QR code to order food. All food items came within 10mins. Except for salt there was no flavor of any kind! No sauce was given with the dumplings or the potstickers. There was 5 pieces of boiled chicken in the fried rice and just tasted like cabbage water. The vegetarian potstickers had only cabbage and corn filling! There was store bought cheap soy sauce, vinegar and hot sauce on the table which just made the food taste worst. If you the like the taste of food cooked in salty boiled cabbage water, with 5 pieces of poor quality meat this is the place to go.
They use AI generated photos of food on their google maps and doordash pages. If they can't bother to take pictures of their own, real food, what other shortcuts are they taking? Can you trust that they keep the restaurant clean or cook food safely?
I will leave food option blank because I lost chance to taste food. We waited more than 20 minutes after order by scanning QR code (no service) which is not important, we know it's normal. But what does that mean when two groups after us got food first but we were still waiting? I am sure they came in and ordered after us. We tolerated the first one, but decided to leave after the second group still got food before us. So, no idea how food tastes, but those are not important anymore.
