Beyond her skill as a cook, Isabel is a generous teacher. I had the pleasure of taking a cooking class with her, where I learned how much care, technique, and tradition go into each step. During my stay, I was also fortunate enough to visit during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) and joined Isabel’s family at the cemetery—a deeply moving experience that added a cultural depth to my visit. Comedor Jaguar isn’t just a place to eat; it’s an experience that brings together food, culture, and community, all led by Isabel’s welcoming spirit and culinary artistry. This was one of the best meals I had in Mexico, and at a great price! The food was absolutely delicious, and Marco went above and beyond—I’m so glad we had the chance to meet him. I highly recommend this restaurant!
Isabel and her son Edguardo were so welcoming and kind. I really felt the love in her delicious food. She let us taste both her mole sauces and the tomato sauce for the chiles rellenos, and wander through the gallery and kitchen. Truly an honor to be welcomed into her home and shown such incredible hospitality 🙏
Such an amazing experience the cooking class with Isabel. It was part of a tour booked with Zapotec travel by Lilly which helps and sustains indigenous culture in the area, and it has been literally perfect. Isabel showed us how to make the delicious sauce called Mole using traditional indigenous methods. We took part on the preparation where she was explaining the different ingredients to use and how they need to be prepared and combined together. As final result we ate what we made (free-range chicken with mole, rice and vegetables) accompanied with a fresh guava juice, everything was so delicious! A very local and authentic experience for those who want to get to know more the Zapotec culture and support the indigenous women. Muchas gracias Isabel!
Incredible mole negro. Wonderful service. Enjoyed that there were few options and had a “this is what we are making today” atmosphere. All super fresh. The cucumber and chia agua fresca was amazing.
A hidden gem in town. A family owned restaurant and shop with delicious food, super friendly lady. We are both vegetarians and señora Isabel made adjustments on the recipient to serve our needs. Don’t even think about eating anywhere else. The best enchiladas we ever had! Muchas gracias señora Isabel!
Isabel and her husband very so sweet, generous, delicious food and her textiles and carpets were beautiful too. They even managed to teach a few words of Zapotec language. It’s like eating in their home.
An excellent spot for lunch in Teotitlan! Isabel makes everything from tortillas to mole from scratch. It’s a wonderful family business with delicious food and a charming atmosphere. Get the Chile rellenos!

Fantastic! Delicious home-style food- especially loved the enchiladas. The dining room doubles as a showroom for local textiles.
The owner is kind, compassionate, and makes her food with love. They were knowledgeable and able to accommodate my dietary restrictions; they cooked up a delicious “quesadilla” with flor de calabaza (squash flower), avocado, and beans. The tortillas were freshly pressed and unparalleled.
We stopped here for lunch. En Via tour offers micofinance loans to women entrepeneurs in 6 villages around Oaxaca. This stop was someone who gets microloans to expand her business. The red mole enchiladas were very good. The tour money goes to finance the loans and education programs. I highly recommend supporting this non profit.
Food is not great and was super expensive! They served us what was left of the Guías soup in a small bowl with manufactured tortillas (not the handmade ones) and a coloradito plate with two enchiladas and some rice, a half glass of Jamaica water (they didn’t have any more) and they charged us $200 mxn!!!!!! I tried saying something and the woman just gave me the confused innocent look! If I would have known I would have not eaten there.! We ate on the highway the other day at a better comedor and for more enchiladas and a full bowl of yummy soup and one pitcher of Jamaica was $75 pesos. Now that is normal! Ah, and we had to do the service because the kid there couldn’t get it together and we had to get up and get everything for our table.
Leaving this as a warning to other travellers. I feel bad leaving this review because this seems like a nice family run business, and I want them to succeed, but I got food poisoning after eating here. I had already been in Mexico for 9 days in case that matters, and everything had been fine. I ordered the black mole chicken and my girlfriend had vegetarian quesadillas. She did not get sick. All of our other meals were identical/shared that day and the previous day, so it's very likely the chicken is what did it. The food tasted okay (not worth what it cost, in my opinion, however options are few in this area). But after we had eaten, we were grossed out after we used the bathroom and found there was no running water (couldn't flush, taps dry). Hand-washing had to be done using a bucket of water with a sign over it, so clearly this issue was known to the establishment. No idea if the kitchen had running water, or if the staff had a separate washroom, but I doubt it. It called the hygeine and cleaning capability of the kitchen into question. After I got sick, it was extremely obvious that this kitchen served me the contaminated food. Just be careful if you eat here, you don't want to have your trip ruined. Check if they have running water before you eat. Hopefully the lack of water was a temporary issue, and nobody else gets sick. Sorry to the owners but I felt it was important to let people know my experience.
