First time here after hearing how good it was for years. It was delicious, everything tasted so fresh and homemade. The yeast rolls and the chicken fried steak were truly the best I've had. Looking forward to the next visit.

I purposely left in between flights to get here. It is well worth the visit and hands down best food in the Houston area. A must visit. Fried okra and pickles are amazing. Chicken fried steak is always a great choice.

My first visit to Goodson's. One of my mother in law's favorite places, so she brought us to try it out. The overall service was spot on; a warm greeting when we came through the door, and super friendly warrior staff. Food was great!!! (With the tiniest exception for the beans they called charro beans; they tasted exactly like ranch style beans. I mentioned it, and the waitress kindly brought me a replacement.) Hubz tried the Roast Beef Potato, which he said was delicious, and mother in law had her usual, Chicken Fried Chicken. It almost covered the whole plate! 😃😃 As for me, I had to try that Chicken Fried Steak, even though I really wanted the Shrimp Alfredo 😉😊😉 I live in the town called Crockett, and almost every cafe in the surrounding area has a chicken fried steak, and I've tried them all 😉 This is indeed a good chicken fried steak, won't deny that at all, but not the best in Texas, HeeHee! 😚 Reminded me of Elf congratulating the coffee shop for having The Best Cup of Coffee in the World!! 😁😁😁😉😉🤭🤭🥰 One day, you'll have to go try the chicken fried steaks at Cattleman's Country Cafe and The Chuck Wagon Grill in Crockett. Those are Damn Good!! 😄😄 And these Yeast Rolls, OMG, so delicious! Could only eat half of one cuz they were massive and pretty dense, but nonetheless very tasty. Best chicken fried steak I've had in the last 30 years or so. The gravy was top notch too (yes, I sampled it by itself - I regret nothing) The flavor, the breading, and the cook on the chicken fried steak were all perfect. The black-eyed peas and okra were also terrific. We arrived about the same time as the after-church crowd but everything seemed to operate smoothly without seeming rushed. The staff were wonderful and timely with their visits. We visited at the recommendation of someone my wife knew and we're glad we did. The prices were quite reasonable considering the amount and quality of the food. We'll definitely return. Highly recommended.

It's been years since I had Goodson's. Wanted some fish and saw they added it to the menu, so I decided to give it a try. I ordered the lemon pepper catfish meal and it was sooo delicious! There was so much food! I got the meal and a dessert, coconut cream pie. Even the slice of pie was the largest slice of pie I've ever seen. The price for the meal and dessert was less than $20. The amount of food I got for less than $20 bucks was amazing. I will definitely be back for more. Would highly recommend if you want good food for not a lot of money. My server, Laura had excellent customer service and was very friendly.

This restaurant rates right up there with Mel's Country Cafe. Service is top notch,its very clean inside and out,wait staff goes out of their way to help you. Everyone from the greeter to the people waiting on you have smile's on their faces. They made me feel like I was the only one in the restaurant. We had two dinner salad's,and an order of onion rings. Salad's better than I expected,and just the right size. Onion rings were too hot to handle and that's a good thing. Prices were quite reasonable. We found a new place to eat in Tomball. My parents took me to this place because my Mom had eaten here a long time ago with her best friend. I got double bacon burger and it was outstanding. I am very picky about a good burger but this one was phenomenal!! The fries were ok, but the onion rings were outstanding. I would say they have a great combination of food to try out and if you like American country food, this is the place to go.

Large portions and great food. My only complaint is that it's the same menu all the time. If they were to have a new dish once a month, we might come more often than once a blue moon. But it's still the best chicken fried steak around!

Sweet baby Jesus I'm about to get fat. The chicken friend steak was as good as everyone said. Loved the squash and mashed potatoes too. My daughter had the grilled cheese and fries. The 2 scoops of ice cream she had looked like 2 mountains. Matt is an awesome waiter. We will be back. This place will make ya stop cooking. The price was so reasonable. YES YES YES! This place is homecooked goodness! I died and went to heaven eating here. The menu is simple and yet has sooooo many amazing choices. I was in Texas for a week and ate here every day that I could! The chicken fried steak, I'm sorry the Worlds Famous Chicken Fried Steak is the only thing you need in your life. My server Nae was amazing and was always making sure I was happy, even during a Sunday church rush. If you are in the Tomball area and want some down to earth home cooked meals. This is the place! Family-friendly, amazing, polite staff and food that will leave you coming back for more. Nae, you are one amazing waitress, and I'll be sure to visit when I come back from Michigan.

Clean restaurant, thoughtful service, and OMG that chicken fried steak. Only negative was that there both of our sides were on the cold side. And the rolls could have been warmer. Only regret is not getting dessert, even if just to go.

Recent changes to menu and meal choices have upgraded this menu tremendously. Meat loaf was awesome. Burgers are hot, juicy and delicious. Chicken fried steaks are incredible. True Texas " saddle blanket sized " steak. Great home cooked meals.

The Hubs have a chicken fried steak, and I had to try it, it was awesome! The green beans tasted like the bacon, so good! And the mac & cheese hit the spot! Such a cute little spot. You may want to get there early because there seems to always be a line, which makes sense because their food is 💣. If you haven’t been here I would recommend checking it out. This is our 2nd time making the 3 hour drive from San Antonio. The food here is so good! The chicken fried steak is definitely the best. We had Allie as our waitress and she was so awesome and super friendly! Definitely worth the drive. Can't wait to go back.

First and foremost, ask for Anthony, had to be the most friendly, efficient, server I've ever had, we came in 1hr till closing. It was fast and delicious, the banana pudding is amazing. The chicken fried steak is some of the best you can get and the baked squash was also delicious. There a reason they have been in business over 70 years 🤯.

Always a great comfy inviting atmosphere when you walk in. You’re greeted right away and always seated immediately. The look from the outside is deceiving, it’s a lot bigger than it looks, lol The food is always on point and tastes really good. Always comes out fresh and hot. Stuff is always nice no matter who is talking to you. I’m very attentive to your needs.

What an iconic place to visit and have a landmark meal. Stepping inside for the first time took me back to my grandmas kitchen and dining table. Right down to the chairs. The food was just plentiful and amazing. We took half of it home and had it for dinner. When near Tomball, you gotta go. I had the chicken fried steak and my wife had the chicken fried chicken. Both were amazing.

The chicken fried steak is classic, good, consistent since I was a child, and big. Rolls are great. Sides could use an upgrade. Have never had anything but good service, the staff works together nicely, the atmosphere reminds me of passing through a small town in nowhere Texas, comfy. Prices are very fair.

A really fun place to have lunch or dinner. Cold beer, great atmosphere and most importantly, excellent southern home cooking. The portions are healthy and taste great. The large chicken fried steak won't disappoint!

The atmosphere is very country and family style. As far as the service, we never had to ask for anything. Our waiter was amazing. I ordered lemon pepper grilled catfish. I think that was the best fish I've ever had. It was amazing. Everything else was great also. The squash was a bit on the sweet side, still good though. The chicken fried steak is good, but not the best we've ever had. Veggies are all scratch made including potatoes. Rolls are all freshly baked.

Was leaving my doctor's office and happened to make a wrong turn and had to turn around so I pulled into driveway and saw the sign. Long story short ended up making the right wrong turn. Best southern cooking I've ever had. I ordered the Pot Roast and let me tell you it didn't disappoint will have to come back and try the chicken fried steak!

This is a wonderful “mom and pop” style restaurant with smiling faces, delicious food, and generous portions. The prices are very fair for what you get and the catfish in any form is a delicacy. I definitely recommend you get their onion rings as an app to share and trust me you won’t be disappointed.

Without a doubt my favorite place to eat in the Tomball area. Not only do they have the best Chicken Fried Steak in Southeast Texas but they offer the most incredible homemade fresh baked yeast rolls I have ever eaten.

First timers brought my kids here. We had onion rings and ranch as an appetizer kids said 10/10. For our meals we had chicken tenders fries and mash. The combination platter which is fried fish and shrimp with fries and mash. I got the large chicken fried steak with mash and fried okra. Everything was great. Service was awesome from the hostess to our waitress. Will be back

1/30/2026 Tonight was mine & husband first time as well as 2 friends of ours. Our server was Ashley, she was absolutely amazing! Super friendly & pleasant to talk to. Not only was she our server, she was bar tending! She was very apologetic the whole time which we knew she was busy as bartender & did an amazing job as our server!! Our food was HOT & DELICIOUS and the portions were more than I expected! We will definitely be coming back ❤️ P.S my Fried catfish was delicious! I’m a picky eater but they have really good chicken tenders. It’s a familiar flavor and the texture isn’t all weird. They waitress was so friendly and funny. Today the Fat Club (Corey, Jay and Myself) headed to Tomball, Texas and went to Goodson’s home of the best Chicken Fried Steak in TEXAS! The waitress asked us if we saw them on a TV that they were on recently, but I had no idea what she was talking about. I just heard about this place from co-workers, so we gave it a try. The place has been open since 1950 and the décor of the place shows its character. I love that! The chicken fried steak was out of this world as was the white gravy. I had the banana pudding as the dessert and damn that was killer too!!

Just discovered this place a couple months ago. We weren’t disappointed. We had had the roast, chicken fried steak and tender pork chops. I have to say the roast was the best of the three. My son said his pork chop was just a tad on the drier side and while the meatloaf was good no one care for the sauce served on top. The bread pudding was delicious and would def get that again. We will definitely be stopping again to try their other dishes. Decently priced and good food. Definitely worth stopping and trying an entree or two.

When we went in, the hostess was really rude, no welcome, she just grabbed menus, started walking towards tables and my son and I looked at each other and followed her. Goodson is ok but not like the old Goodsons. The gravy in my opinion is awful but the rolls are great. Best deal is the 10 inch ribeye for the money with 2 sides. Love the green tomatoes for appetizers. Would recommend to anyone who has not been to Goodsons to try them out.

Drove about an hour to meet a buddy for lunch. Good food, but I wasn’t in the mood for a massive chicken fried steak for lunch. Opted for a chicken sandwich. Nothing to write home about, but not bad either. Service was good, food was good, and prices were fair.

I'll give it 3 stars, simply because it was a decent chicken fried steak, but nowhere near the nest chicken fried steak as they claim. The mashed potatoes were cold, the steak was warm, the gravy warmish or so. Large portion, so I have that to take to work, but, pretty sure I won't be returning.

Stopped here for the first time on our way home from the Texas Renaissance Fair. It was pretty busy but we were greeted and seated immediately. The waiter (sorry can't recall his name) arrived at the table within 2 minutes to take our drink order then about 3 minutes after bringing our drinks he was back to take our food order. Big plus, he spoke loudly and clearly enough to be easily heard and understood even over the crowd. He also brought yeast rolls with the drinks and oh my, they were amazing! Soft, warm, and yeasty! Our food arrived quite quickly considering how busy they were and everything was piping hot. Their menu claims they have the 'best chicken fried steak' in Texas according to The Eyes of Texas (not sure who that is). So, I ordered the small one. Was it good? Yes. Was it the best I've had? No, that honor still stays with T-Bone Tom's in Kemah. It did have quite a bit of extra breading around the edges of the actual meat and wasn't cooked quite long enough. As you can see in the photo the breading was pretty light colored. The flavor was good, but not exceptional. I also had fried okra and mashed potatoes. The okra also needed a bit more time in the fryer as it wasn't very crisp at all. The potatoes and gravy were both very good.

Home of the mid chicken fried steak. Zero flavor, even adding gravy, it's just a slab of fried meat, mashed potatoes was a chunk of chalk, the Mac and cheese was good and the bread rolls were excellent. Definitely try the other food but nothing that special, the chicken fried steak is not that great.

It was my first time here, my boyfriend and FIL had been here before and loved it so I was excited to try it. The food was decent, I only had the plain burger so I can’t speak for anything else. My boyfriend didn’t seem too impressed with his alfredo and my FIL said the catfish and shrimp dish was okay. Our main complaint was the service. We had a younger male server who kept messing up- my FIL didn’t get his salad until he asked for it (it ended up having to get boxed up so he could eat his meal while it was warm and even then after it was brought he saw they made it wrong), we got our rolls mid-meal when we asked for them early on, etc. We got checked up on maybe twice and the icing on the cake was someone sweeping right beside us while we were finishing our food. All I could think of was dust being flung our way and it made me not wanna finish. Oh and the cups smelled like dirty sponges. It isn’t a bad place overall, but personally I’d never make a special trip to come back. We didn’t have a ‘wow’ experience and honestly it made me sad for my FIL since he always raves about this place. They should really put more effort into training because it seemed like our server was someone who was just hired recently and thrown to the sharks.

Chicken Fried Steak was good. Gravy was good. Catfish was good. Mashed potatoes were cold and dry. Mac and cheese was not good. Chicken tenders and chicken and dumplings were not good. Service was mediocre. Prices are reasonable.

Chicken fried steaks is overated… not much of a steak flavor. Really busy restaurant and we ordered the blackened chicken alfredo with a side of mac and cheese, the alfredo was good but the mac was ordinary. The best thing that I had was probably the kids fried catfish.

Goodson's has good comfort food, but if I'm being honest there's nothing that really stands out. They are known for their chicken fried steak, which is flavored nicely and comes in two portion sizes.

We really wanted to be wowed because of the ratings, and were looking forward to trying Goodsons. Inside, the restaurant was clean and felt homey. Our server was very timely and kind, as were the other staff members. Unfortunately, our food was just ok. The mixed basket looked good, but was not very flavorful. My okra was very bland, sadly. Our chicken fried steaks looked nice and crisp and we were excited to taste them! Again, after a few bites the center became quite gristlefull and the breading started to fall away from the meat. The fries were good. The sides were underwhelming, again not much flavor. My coffee was watery and bitter. So, all in all, I don't think I will recommend ....which is sad, because I had high hopes, and wanted to have some good ole home cookin!

GOODSON's has been around for a long time. Their country fried steak is ranked one of the best in Texas. It's good, but my mom's was better. The gravy was good. The squash was some of the best I've had. Sweet potato fries were tasty. The ribeye was a little tough but tasted ok. The sampler basket was very tasty, just not enough of the items for more than 4 people to get a taste. The service was slow, and several things were not accurately delivered to the table and had to be reordered. I'll go back, it may have just been an off night and update when I get a second visit.

Service: Good, attentive servers Noise level: loud, hard to hear. Mostly just rowdy customers Food: I got the country fried steak with macaroni and cheese and okra. Personally I did not like the food I ordered. I couldn't finish it because it's not for me. The country fried steak itself was hard to cut. It had no flavor; bland, it needed lots of salt and pepper. The breading was not crispy and needed lots of gravy. The okra was not crispy either. This totally could just be a one time occurrence based on what I ordered. I would be willing to try another dish they make.

We drove an hour to get here based on a recommendation. Food, service and atmosphere was average. Nothing special if I'm being honest. Maybe my expectations were too high but if you claim to have the best chicken fried steak then I was kind of expecting to be wowed. The food was good. Not amazing but good. If you live nearby definitely check them out but it was unfortunately not worth the drive for us. We had the chicken fried steak and meatloaf. Be aware the meatloaf has marinara sauce on top so it tasted like meatballs not meatloaf. Wasn't bad but definitely didn't taste like meatloaf.

Service is good but the food was a real disappointment. Chicken fried steak -- supposedly their specialty -- was bland. Their desserts weren't so hot, either. I expected some real Southern food taste after looking at their menu but it wasn't any better than Cracker Barrel, which is a pretty low bar. I'd probably go back if someone dragged me there, but with much lower expectations than my first visit.

Food was good but disgusted with the drinking glasses they use ! It’s plastic , not really expensive so there ‘s no reason not to replace them when they become chipped . The lips of the glasses served to us was chipped ALL AROUND- at least there’s a straw provided so you don’t cut your lips !!!

The service early on a Friday evening was quick and friendly, with no delay in seating or serving. Kylie was our server; the drinks and food came very rapidly, my beer was served cold in the bottle, and coffee was also served immediately. I was surprised at how quickly the food was served, but disappointed in the quality. I had the ribeye, mentioned on the specials board in the waiting area. I asked for two carbs, mac ‘n’ cheese and a loaded baked potato. The mac tasted very premade, with none of the qualities of homemade. No brown cheesy crust, no baked-together goodness, just yellow cheese sauce on small pasta. The baked potato was fine, but not very hot. The bacon bits tasted and looked like they came from a packet, not like anyone was frying actual meat. The ribeye was thin and stringy, with a lot of fat and tough fibers, but they did cook it close to medium rare, which is quite a task with such a thin cut. The gravy and rolls in a basket also appeared to be just something shipped in and heated, maybe canned gravy? My companion had the meatloaf, which she said tasted like it had spaghetti sauce on top. The beans looked canned as well, and there was a scoop of ordinary mashed potatoes. We ordered banana pudding to go, but I’d pass next time. It seems to be mostly whipped cream and not really the creamy thick dish with bananas and wafers I was hoping for. On the whole, all seemed very old-fashioned and plain, with none of the local color and style we’d hoped for. Maybe it’s a good place to take the grandparents; we did see a large percentage of older folks who seemed happy with their choice. The religious bent to the decor was echoed in the wishes for a ‘blessed day’ we were offered by staff as we left.

Wanted to still love it. Server was great. Restaurant was clean. Fried mozzarella tasted great but wasn't cooked all the way, it was warm and rubbery. Meatloaf wasn't cooked all the way and was mushy. Mashed potatoes were good! Mac and cheese was cooked perfectly but had no taste. My wife had pot roast and it was good.

I had heard great things about this place. The greatest thing was the walk out the door 🚪. The food had no flavor, no seasoning. The chicken Fried Steak Combo was nice and big but bland. The pot roast dry as the Sahara desert 🏜. The rolls on point. The wait staff came by to take the drink order and messed that up and then took fifteen minutes to come back to take the rest of our orders. Hands down, worst place I've been to. Just my opinion.

Edit: Update - on 01/17/24 we gave them a second chance, and yep, it was just as bad and even worse.. there were living insects crawling in my wife's salad. See photo. Have visited Goodson's many times over the last couple decades. Last night might have been the last time we visit. Something has changed, maybe the management? Or the cooks.. one of the other. To start, we were sat at a tiny, wobbly table, as a party of 3 and barely had room for all 3 of our drinks plus an appetizer even though there were 2 open booths right next to us. 5 minutes later a couple of two were sat at the larger booth. Why not sit the larger party at the larger table? We ordered drinks, and it took nearly 10 minutes to get them. The host and wait staff did not bring us utensils, so we had to walk to the front to get our own. We ordered Fried Mushrooms to start, and the serving was about half what it usually was. Portion was definitely smaller. As far as flavor, these fried mushrooms were the best part of our visit. We ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, a Ribeye steak, and a mac n cheese burger. When our food was delivered, she sat down a bowl of Gravy and mentioned they were out of rolls. This would have been nice to know before ordering the meal as it is one reason I order the Chicken Fried Steak. The Chicken Fried Steak has been one of my favorites for many many years and is usually the only thing I ever order at Goodson's. The meal last night was bland, had no flavor, as if it was just meat and breading, and nothing else. No seasoning, no spice, nothing at all. Just plain. I usually use the rolls to make a chicken fried steak sandwich. Shame they were out of rolls and did not mention it. The ribeye had no flavor either, was rubbery, and semi-cold. The person who ordered that could not finish it as it was just not enjoyable. The shrimp that came with the ribeye were cold even though they were supposed to be sautéed fresh off the grill. The Mac n Cheese Burger that my son had was pretty large and might have been the only thing made decently. The waitress only came back once while we were eating to ask us if we wanted a refill on our drinks, did not inquire about our meal, or anything else. Usually they come back to ask how the food is, and if we are enjoying it. She seemed to be pre-occupied, talking to other staff or sitting at a table with another diner. Overall, the experience was disappointing, and not like the Goodson's we have known for many many years. We paid $70 after tip, and it was definitely not a $70 experience.

When you get their homemade rolls instead of butter they give you 48% vegetable oil spread. Anyone that says Goodson's is delicious can't tell the difference between butter and vegetable oil spread. The crust fell off of my chicken fried steak nothing had any flavor or seasoning even the mashed potatoes. Truly disappointing.

Nov. 26 I went to pick up my catered Mash potatoes which were dry, rolls were bad, and green beans were not fully cooked. I had double the order. I was so embarrassed to see it. I paid I think $144. Not sure but I love the food there.. But I won't have them cater anymore. I was so disappointed.

Worst chicken fried steak ever, not flavor at all, crust taste like flour… mash potatoes was dry, coffee was poorly make like watered, waitress bring food and never give us flatware until I asked. Rolls were not good at all. Terrible experience.

I came here yesterday. And I ordered a Burger. But my problem was. I had mold on it. And I got sick. I'm no longer available to visit this place anymore. I choose to stop visiting this location on March 6th 2026. And I'm not returning back anymore. Because I keep getting sick every time I eat here. So I need to make a permanent closure date by March 6th 2026 for the Goodsons cafe. Please?

This place used to be awesome. We will not be back. Service is poor and the food is not what it used to be. Had a long wait for our food. They used to bring out rolls and gravy to begin with. We finally got some after our food was delivered. And that took a long time. Waitress brought my chicken fried steak and I asked for gravy. She said she had other food to deliver and then she’d bring some gravy. So I sat there with my chicken fried steak getting cold until she brought gravy. Will never go back. There are better options where they actually believe in Customer Service! Goodson’s you need to get your act together.
