Opinions de Doug's Fish Fry W Genesee
Stopped at Doug's while visiting NY for a Syracuse football game, and loved it. There was a line out the door, but they kept things moving. Huge plates at a fair price. Fish was golden brown in a lightly seasoned batter. Shrimp were large and meaty, cooked just right. Onion rings are fantastic, no too heavily battered. Even the coleslaw is great. Sat out back in the outdoor seating on a beautiful and pleasant September day and finished a great day in Skaneateles with a great meal.
Amazing food. Healthy, reasonably priced (they do NOT accept any tips!). Very polite staff.
The best place to get a fish fry from. I have been going here ever since I was little and I still love it to this day. Everytime my family goes to Skaneateles, it is a must that we go to Doug's. The food comes out fast and tastes delicious. Their tartar sauce is to die for. I also bought a shirt just to show how much I love this place.
Good lord!!! Outstanding fish sandwich. Best I’ve ever had. Cod. Cod. Cod. Delicious. Absolutely the best. Also, the clam chowder was excellent. And Skaneateles is lovely.
Fish fry was very good and a very big portion. Slaw was tasty, fries lacked some salt. Pouring on my own salt isn't the same as salting it when it had just finished frying. But overall was very good. Pricing very reasonable.
Stopped and ate dinner. The food was delicious, friendly staff. Atmosphere is great. I couldnt stop eating the food, even though I was full I kept eating.
Excellent food. Although you might be leaving with a to go container. Good prices too.
I ride my motorcycle an hour and a half just to get the fish dinner. It never fails to surprise me how delicious it is! 😋
This quirky little fish joint in the heart of a Finger Lakes town is the kind of place that sticks with you long after the meal is over. The fish, trust me—the quality and flavor are top-tier. The décor is wonderfully offbeat, with lake-themed oddities and a menu board that never changes. There’s a cozy, lived-in charm here that makes it feel more like a friend’s cabin than a restaurant. What really makes it special, though, is the food. From crispy fish cut out back to perfectly fried seafood baskets, every dish hits the spot. The steamed clams and lobster rolls are awesome and the shrimp po boy is my absolute favorite. The portions are generous, and even the sides (don’t skip the slaw or hand-cut fries) are worth a mention. Locals love it year-round—which says a lot in a town that sees its fair share of tourist turnover. In the summer, expect lines out the door, but don’t worry—they move fast, and the staff handles the rush like pros, all while keeping things friendly and relaxed. Whether you’re just passing through or lucky enough to live nearby, this spot is a must-visit for anyone craving great food in a down-to-earth setting.
Doug's has been around since the early 1980s, and feels like a local institution when you walk by it's trifecta of local restaurants. Our group came here for a nice, garlicy lobster roll and some onion rings on a weekend trip to Syracuse/Skaneateles -- it was solid. Grab a quick ice cream sundae next door for dessert if you're in the mood, and then take a walk by the lake on a nice sunny day to round out your quintessential weekend trip to Lake Skaneateles
I don't like the fries, but I'm in a minority with this opinion. Everything else is great. I gave a three on atmosphere, because the dining room is very large and noisy and the outdoor dining area has a lot of bird poop. We don't mind it, but others might.
Always a pleasure coming to Doug's for the best Haddock you can find in the North Eastern US. Everything is fresh, hot and cooked to order! Old school hand cut fries, great scallops and the best fish fry ever. I always come here with the family when I visit up state NY. The lake is also great to walk and sight see!
This is a great place to eat. Quick and fairly reasonable. We had fish dinner and calamari. I found the frying to be optimal and the fries themselves to be very delicate. Dougs also has their own beer, which is top notch. There is also a wide selection of sauces, including honey curry, which kind of seal the deal for me, personally. 10 out of 10. Five stars. World class.
Easily the best fried fish I’ve had. The staff is nice, the food comes out quick (always consistently good) and the fish tastes light and fresh. The fish is fried just right making it slightly crispy on the outside but not overkill greasy like fried fast food. The coleslaw is also really great. They also have seasonal ice cream that can be very yummy.
First time we enjoyed a fish fry at Doug's. Even though we traveled 1 1/2 hours to get there, it was well worth it. It was the most delicious fish fry we have ever had...perfect in every way! The only complaint we have is that the cole slaw contained onions. However, we will definitely return but not for the cole slaw. 😉
Always a great experience here at Doug's! It was Friday night and packed. I waited in line for about 3 minutes before I placed my order. A fish dinner with onion rings and an order of scallops. I paid and then went to fill up a few extra tartar sauces. By the time I was done, my food was ready. I got it home in about 15 minutes and enjoyed an awesome dinner with my wife. Great people, Great place, Great food! Well worth the drive.
Best meal of the week. Busy, but the line moved fast. The staff was friendly and clearly knew what they were doing. Food was fresh and oh so tasty! I had the oysters. They were on the online menu, but not the one at the restaurant. Glad I asked, cause they were great! Seafood chowder was loaded with various seafood. Loved my takeout experience here! Oh and they wrapped it in paper, no plastic bags- ❤ this
I just enjoyed the best salmon that I have ever had in me life. I had a glass of wine and enjoyed the oldies playing in the back ground. There were many seniors there. My suggestion to management would be to on one of their slower days to have an senior day. Playing he oldies, maybe a little discount for seniors and a little area if anyone wanted to dance.
Nothing says summer like sitting by Skaneateles Lake enjoying the sunshine with a plate of Doug’s Fish Fry. This Skaneateles staple serves up freshly fried fish, oysters, clams, scallops, shrimp, and chicken. With a plethora of dipping sauces, condiments, and sides. There is something here for everybody to enjoy
'Gold standard' delicious 😋 fish-fry with savory dill tartar sauce, which is the best accompaniment. Casual dining/ atmosphere to enjoy your dinner. Definitely try the salmon, cooked to order, or the fabulous lobster 🦞 roll too! Tonight, added a few apple fritters and I'd say they're rated 'best tasting'!!
We wanted something different, when we sat down, a local sat at the next table beside us, and told us the history of the restaurant. He probably saw our Va tags. We got there just before they were closing, they didn't hurry us, just cleaned around us, and as we finished, they asked us to leave.
One of the freshest Fish Fries I have ever had - and I have lived in a beach town. Atmosphere is great, gives off small town fisherman vibes. Portions are huge, staff is super friendly. A must visit
I love Doug's! I also love that it hasn't changed in 25 years (since I left Skaneateles), other than expanding and improving. We ordered the hot dog (Hoffman's all the way!) and fish sandwich. Both were delicious! If you are in the area, stop by Doug's. You won't be sorry! Service was great, food came out faster than I anticipated, and it was perhaps the most affordable food I had while in the Finger Lakes.
Very consistent and tasty! I never eat fish any other place because I don’t want to waste $12 on fish that is nothing like Doug’s. Although.... I was in NC and stopped for some fish some place and ended up talking to the owner. I told him I was from upstate NY and he asked if I had ever been to Doug’s. He told me that he got a job there so that he could learn how to make a good fish fry and bring it down south. If you like a good fish fry, go to Doug’s. But be patient, when we went tonight the line was out the door from 5:45-6:45 on a Thursday. And the coleslaw is the best I have ever had... and I grew up hating coleslaw!
A don't miss eatery when in Skaneatales for terrific (not-junky) fried fish. We were skeptical when we saw the long line of people waiting for takeout at Doug's because the Finger Lakes are known for the excellent fishing there. Every fancy place serves cod or scrod or haddock although these might not be local .. anyway, we noticed a newer sit-down Doug's Dining Room next door and figured if they expanded, they must be good. We were happy we queued up because the line zips right through. Fried fish was a 10" slab of gently breaded, not greasy flounder in a soft, squishy bun. French fries are perfection. No fried clams till Fridays and no calamari left but my hubby had a Lobster Roll he adored. Seafood soup and gumbo smelled delicious. Grilled shrimp skewers landed on the table next to us and looked fabulous. Doug's a super local place with hysterical fish joke signs and vats of tartar sauce and ketchup on the side counters. There are formica tables inside and picnic tables out back too. Prices are circa 1964 so you'll enjoy that too.
Went there for dinner the food was great I had the scallope dinner and my husband and friend got fish sandwich and onion rings we all enjoyed our food we will go there again
Great food and amazing value for your money. The fish sandwich (cod) was incredible. Cooked perfectly and not greasy at all. We highly recommend!
Just absolutely love Doug's Fish Fry and have been coming to eat here for many years. My parents even had their anniversary dinner here recently! Ther fish sandwich is always a safe bet, but the other shellfish that they have fried are delicious including oysters, shrimp, scallops, and clams. The onion rings are also awesome and I'm told their seasonal fruit topped ice cream sundaes are amazing also. Parking is in the public lot in the back and make sure to pay at one of the kiosks. A must visit if you're even within 30 minutes of Skaneateles and then visit the lakeshore of this beautiful lake.
The Cider Mill Ice cream, the fresh apple fritter, and the seafood chowder were all excellent. Some of the best food on our Finger Lakes trip.
This is the BEST place to go get yourself the authentic Doug’s Fish Fry experience. Not a fine dining place but great for the family or friends for a generous meal and yummy fish and chips with tartar sauce
I used to take my father in law (Frank Haas) here, every time we visited Skaneateles, he and I loved seafood and never got it at home.. We now live in Kent, Washington and haven't been back to Skaneateles in years.
I’ve been going to Doug’s Fish Fry for over 20 years, and it’s still one of my favorite spots. The fish dinners are always delicious, and the steamed clams are a treat (though, like anywhere, they can sometimes be a little sandy). What really makes it for me is the whole experience — grabbing a soda-sized wine, cozying up in a window seat or outside, and people-watching while I enjoy my food. It’s casual, comforting, and always hits the spot. Doug’s never disappoints!
A staple of the town and a must try for tourists. The fish dinner with coleslaw is my go to. They have a nice selection of ice cream to cleanse your palette afterwards.
Great fish sandwich and really good coleslaw. We also loved the frozen custard, super creamy. This place has been around since 1980 and has really cool memorabilia inside. Definitely worth a visit.
This is a delicious and fast dish try. I always stop by when I am in the area for a fish dinner. The fish is nice and flaky covered in corn meal batter. The slaw is well balanced and goes well with the fish. The fries are fresh cut, crispy, delicious, and their home made honey mustard is perfect for dipping the fries.
This was my first visit to Skaneateles and a friend just recommended this restaurant I never heard of it but the food is super good and affordable. The line was out the door but nonetheless there was always a place to sit. Above all the workers there were very helpful and friendly, answered all my menu questions. Top notch food cannot go wrong here.
Doug's is by far the BEST Fish Fry in the country! I currently live in Chicago but I am originally from upstate New York. Whenever I visit family, I drive the extra hour and a half to stop down and skaneateles and get my fish dinner that never disappoints. The service is outstanding and the food has never wavered in its consistency or incredible taste. I can't wait to get back there for another visit. Update: I went out of my way to swing by on New Year's Eve for lunch and it was the BEST meal I've ever had at Dougs! Really looking forward to more trips back to Dougs in 2026!!!
If money and distance were no object, I'd eat at Doug's more often. Doug's offers a positive atmosphere, a joie de vivre that you just can't ignore. The food is tasty, the folks are friendly, the tables are clean, and the condiments are comprehensive. You can't ignore the fact that everything (it seems) is fried. That adds to the flavor and texture but, well, there's an awful lot of bad press out there about the downside of fried food. I hate to say it, but it seems believable and it's the only thing that costs Doug's a 5-star-across-the-board rating. Well, one of two things. They ain't cheap. Money is an object, so you may not want to eat there /too/ frequently. Doug's in Skaneateles is one of a very few places I've visited that offers model railroading as part of the decor. Watching the train chug along the near-the-ceiling mounted tracks never seems to lose its charm. The ordering and serving area reminds me of one of those seafood shacks along the MA-NH-Maine coast. If you're a visitor to the area, don't miss it!
Love this place for seafood! Loved the shrimp po-boy and gumbo was quite nice, different than I've had in the past. Fresh items change daily. Oysters today, scallops in a few days. The fish laid across the sandwich like a whale on a dingy! Great family that has been serving for many years. Go there for the food; the taste will overwhelm any expectations for ambiance. This is a great seafood "shack". If you have seafood allergies, they offered a few items (like mac-n-cheese) to satisfy my wife, but that is not their main purpose. Can't wait to come back!
Lived here 19 years ago as young newlyweds, never realized just how special this place is. Revisited today and I still have yet to find a chicken or fish dinner better than Dougs. If you're within 45 minutes and want some of the best chicken and fish fry you can eat, this is ideal. Good for families. Fresh food. No reservations, no tipping, great atmosphere. Employees are not your typical chicken joint employees, they're vets, they know what they're doing. Still a fan
Doug’s Fish Fry was UNBELIEVABLE. Some of the best seafood I’ve ever had in my life. The workers were kind and service was prompt and superb. We got the scallops dinner and a fish plate and ho-ly-crap was it incredible. Some of the most tender scallops and fish I’ve ever had. They have several house made fresh sauces (including remarkable tartar and cocktail sauces) that perfectly compliment their food. The hand cut fries and freshly battered onion rings were to die for. And the view from the front window was so picturesque. If you are ANYWHERE within a one hour drive of this restaurant, please do yourself a favor and stop in. You won’t find better food, fresher fish, or more excellent service anywhere else.
A must visit if at Skaneateles. Everything on the menu was fresh and you can taste the quality. They make their own sauces, use local products and are very friendly. Large portion for the fish sandwich, the scallops were fried just right, shrimp was perfect. The coleslaw was the best I've ever had, it must have been just made.
Wentt here for the first time for an early dinner with family from Florida. We ordered and found a table near the windows. The restroom was decorated with a bunch of photos and fun stuff on the walls, super cute. The service was friendly and quick. The food was fresh and super hot. I got the tender dinner with fries and Mac and cheese and the Mac was fantastic! The tenders and fries were good too. Hubby got the fish sandwich dinner and liked it but said the fish was kind of flavorless.. overall we'll be back and enjoyed it. It was a bit loud in there but it was also quite busy.
Doug’s Fish and Chips was a delightful experience, with everything cooked to perfection and packed with flavor. The highlight was definitely the lobster roll rich, fresh, and buttery, it stood out as the star of the meal. The sauces were another standout, offering the perfect tangy and savory complement to the seafood. Both the crisps and onion rings were satisfyingly crunchy and flavorful, though just a bit on the oily side, which is expected and forgivable for this kind of hearty, indulgent comfort food.
This is such a great spot to eat, the prices are reasonable as well. We got a shrimp po’boys and apple fritters it came to around $21. It’s a great spot for a quick bite in the area. The sandwich was good, the apple fritter is delicious! It’s a thick cute apple slice with a whole in the middle, battered, fried, and covered in cinnamon sugar. They’re served hot and were so delicious. I’d come just for that, but the food is great too; they also serve Perry’s ice cream.
Always a great spot for lunch or dinner.\nGreat staff, great foods d a fun atmosphere.

We enjoyed eating at Doug's Fish Fry. Excellent fresh seafood and very good prices. They also had great ice cream sundaes.
We went over to Doug's fish fry during the Dickens In The Village. We came in a day earlier on a Friday. But since I have a mobility problem and meters were taken we decided to try Saturday.... which was even worse as far as parking goes. My husband parked at a partnering place in Skaneatlus since we were staying at the Skaneatlus suites. He dropped me off at the door before he proceeded on parking. Doug's reminds me of Arther teachers fish and chips in the way you go up to the counter to choose on the menu and order. You also pick up the order when it's ready. I have to say it was hardly any waiting for the order. Fish and onion dinner was 5 star. Huge portions and good onion rings fish was good. Deep fried. Gumbo small order wasn't up to par... not what is expected from souther flair gumbo. Shrimp was small the type you happen to find in the frozen department. Cleanliness was up to par as well as only a few minute wait for oder to be completed. Counter service was fast and kind. Resturant clean with plenty of seating
Reasonably priced, authentic fish fry place. The staff was very helpful about gluten free options and offered me a taste of two soups. The chowder was delicious and packed with fish and cream/butter. I had soft custard for dessert. Would definitely come again!
They have a large parking lot out back of their establishment. This place can get pretty busy. I've seen a line all the way up the street on several occasions before .I've had their food on multiple occasions. The fried scallops and shrimp are some of the best and never disappoint. Today while I was here I ordered a lobster roll and the fried scallops portion. My friend ordered hotdogs and french fries. The scallops were delicious as usual. I was a bit surprised by the lobster roll though. It was $23 .It came with mostly minced up lobster and maybe part of a claw on it. For $23 I was expecting alot of large lobster chunks. It was a bit off putting to see it all mostly minced up. It tasted like they sauted the lobster meat on a griddle or something with some butter and a light seasoning. It tasted good. However for $23 I was expecting more lobster. I had a lobster roll the week before at the state fair from another food place. It was only $21 and had huge massive chunks of lobster in it. I had over four claws and so many chunks of meat on it. So I guess with Doug's reputation and how good the scallops and shrimp are .I was expecting a bit more from them. The hotdog was good and the French fries were homemade which was nice. I will definitely be back. The scallops and shrimp are always amazing. I don't think I will be getting a lobster roll again from them though. I saw another lobster roll come out that another customer had ordered. It looked the same as mine, all minced up. This made the roll fall apart and the meat fall out while trying to eat it.
Everything was ok. It has been a while since I have eaten at a Dougs FF. It was about average, in all aspects. My expectations were a little higher but other than that it was acceptable.
Mi wife and I had the fish and onion rings for lunch. We should have shared one because the serving was ginormous. I was going to get a picture of it but I lost all control and dove right in without any control. We used to live upstate twenty years ago and we are there then, so glad we could still come back all these years later. Don't forget to try the apple sundae, it's to die for.
The food was delicious, and a local favorite didn't disappoint. A classic quick walk through grab, go, or dine-in restaurant. Our food order was ready quickly. Our fish was cooked perfectly, the batter was light and crispy. The coleslaw was good, but I did see that it could be substituted for baked beans instead. The fries were a little greasy but overshadowed by the Oreo sundae. Everyone left happy. The atmosphere was charming. The hanging track train made its way around the busy dining room every minute or so. Overall Doug's makes you feel as if you're family. Grab a plate of fried food and pull up a chair, you're in for a test.
guy serving the food had gloves on and kept wiping his nose, then wrapping the food. yak

good fresh fish and the clam chowda is pretty decent. in the summer, enjoy their shakes. fast service a good pricing.
Fish and fries are good. Gumbo is just okay. Slaw is not good - I only ate about half of that. Beer in a paper cup seems odd. Fast prep once you order. Multiple old timers in line in front taking forever, paying with exact change, taking sips of wine and asking for it to be topped off again. Lol. Others budging right to the front of the line to order new items after they already sat down with their food. Kind of funny I guess unless you're in a hurry or really hungry.
The fish was delicious but the breading seemed under / un- seasoned. The coleslaw was very good, but a tad sweet. Not sure if their cabbage was that sweet or if too much surgar was added, either way it is better than most, all but D BBQ. The fresh cut fries were inedible, limp, greasy and barely warm, disappointing. The outdoor picnic tables are all small (4 people), and don't work for larger than 4 groups. The tables are un-preserved, so they have dried out and splintered, possibly causing splinters and snagging clothes. As "All fish is served on a bun" even the fish dinner came on a hamburger bun, which were mostly left uneaten on people's plates as seen before and after we ate, so mostly a waste of food and money. Why they don't ask before paying or serving seems not that difficult. The default should be no bun or ask at the cashier or serving counter, as most people who ordered dinners did not eat them. If they used good bakery rolls, they would definitely not want to waste money on the rolls to have them thrown away. IMO. Your results will very. The sandwich includes a hamburger bun.
Frequently go here but on occasion the side dishes really are lacking. Despite having a line out the door their fries were soggy and almost cold. We ordered a brownie milkshake and it was very thin, just tasted like milk with a little bit of chocolate and Brownie bits. The fish and chicken is always good!
Came back here after quite some time after a nice autumn drive. We have had some nice experiences here in the past. Had the fish fry with onion rings and the gumbo. The gumbo was served hot which was a redeeming feature. However this flavoring was not something I have had of a gumbo before and wasn’t that pleasant to me either. Did see an odd okra piece and something else that might have been seafood. The breaded fish fry was vintage Doug’s the rolls seem stale and the onion rings were ok. Skaeneatlas has a lot more places to offer and will probably choose to sample those offerings.

The fish and rings were not fried long enough. One large part of the fish was still white, not fried. I asked about it and was told it was fine. It was not. $17 for a partially cooked fish and sorta cooked onion rings!?
Just visited this place. Very cute and friendly Staff. Food was decent, but did not live up to the hype. Had the lobster roll which was decent. The fries, however, were absolutely awful and soggy. Went back to get more, but they were just hot and soggy.
What’s going on with Doug’s Fish Fry lately? This used to be one of my favorite places but recently the have dropped the ball. Last 2 times my wife’s Mac and cheese was like cheese soup. Tonight it was more of the same. If it’s not ready why serve it? Seriously. The fries were under done and hard. My fish was dried out… a total bust.— brought the Mac and cheese home to actually cook it. I usually love this Doug’s but tonight was not the great quality food I have come to love and look forward to enjoying. Only the coleslaw was up to Doug’s usual…

We ordered two fish dinners. The fish is average (& that’s being generous), the home made fries were disgusting. Burnt on the outside, raw inside, flat cold and greasy. I am still nauseous one day …
It may be a famous place but... long line to order all the way outside. Unfriendly staff when ordering. Just two beer types to order from. Ordered peel your shrimp 1/2 pound. Ordered, had to find a single clean tile as NO ONE busses tables nor clean them. Sat at a dirty, sticky table. Had to bus it and clean it myself. Waited far too long for food. Peel you shrimp was hot... I've NEVER heard of peel.your shrimp hot. Went to exchange for just shrimp cocktail cold. Paid $14 for 1/2 pound peel shrimp. Theyliterally wanted to exchange my $14 plate for a single $5 appetizer and had to argue for three to make it even. It was rubbery shrimp. Overcooked and zero flavor. The cocktail sauce was okay but runny. Everything served in cheap plastic containers. Beer in paper gross cups. Fries were fresh cut but undercooked and floppy. Fish was not greasy and cooked just right but ZERO flavor. Plastic forks n knives, short on napkins. No lemons in sight anywhere. They gave me a stupid plastic container of fake lemon juice. Paid $40 for rubber shrimp, a fish fry and chips and two beers. Nope. No way. Awful experience. Bread dry with nothing on it... like a bun. Period. The cole slaw was sweet. Yuck. Best thing about this place was me leaving. Won't ever be back.
Have been going to Doug's over 20 yrs, had an apt across the street for a year. Recently had the seafood chowder since I love soups. Our cup was 98 pct broth, no seafood or veg or anything. Took it back and quickly given a new cup. Had a little bit of stuff in it, but truly terrible, no flavor. Could not chew the clams, solid rubber, not much else in there but a few pcs of potato. Wow, good soup is EASY to make and could be a big winner. Not here unfortunately. Also a signal of other issues. That said, the scallops are very good. The fish is usually cooked well, but doesn't have much flavor, probably Cod, when Haddock is much more flavorful, so usually a bit pricier than Cod. Sadly, Doug's lost my business after more than 2 decades.
Have been coming to Doug’s since its opening and eating on Skaneateles since 1970, this place has gone down hill. Fish is small, separate pieces and tasteless. The clam strips are ‘clam crumbles’ of grease and fried breading. See plates. All basically fit on a small plate, as i had to ask for a big plate to properly eat my food. You can get far superior fish at Moondance in Cherry Valley, way better service and price!
