Visited Sep2025 and Jan2026. Superb food, keenly priced, well presented, fair portions, strong flavours, great range of wines and beers.
I had my baby shower here on Saturday the staff were very accommodating and made the day a very special day and one to remember, the food came out on time and there was plenty of food people even had to take some home we had more than enough and a great variety, The staff on the bar were very helpful and all guests felt well looked after, I would definitely recommend this venue if you are having a baby shower or party
A great hidden gem. Great Sunday roast. We went large and it beat us. Great venue and the staff made us feel liked we were valued locals. Disappointed we missed the disco the night before. We will be back for the £10 lunchtime meal and drink for sure!
Stunning outside seating, huge under cover area allows customers to enjoy the fresh air in any weather This Beautiful building can accommodate a large amount of people inside and out... With its outside tv's this would be a fantastic venue for any big Sporting event. 😎
Went to the White Horse for our Christmas celebrations, with over 20 friends and colleagues. The food was pre-ordered from their festive menu. Given they were catering for a large group, the food was lovely and served warm.
Popped by the White Horse for a Monday lunch. Lovely food as always and friendly attentive staff. Had a Mediterranean tart with salad followed by a Vegan cheesecake. Bargain at just over a tenner. Mention for Charlotte, and also for Libby from previous visits.
Visited this place and ordered glazed ribs and a squid starter. Fair prices, the food was more than worth it. The meat was incredibly delicious and tender, and the fries were crispy and perfect. Even though it was saturday evening, and the bar was busy, the food arrived after 10 minutes, as we were sitting on the beautiful outside space with cheerful dogs and people. The service was friendly, and there was not a single thing to put a finger on. The place is located in a beautiful neighborhood in Welwyn and the inside of the bar has a nice traditional bar interior and a nice place to have a pint and perhaps watch a sports game. The backyard is a spacious green garden to eat. Would definitely recommend visiting The White Horse!
Fantastic place, a hidden gem. Just had a Sunday roast there and was amazing. Great presentation and taste. Staff very friendly too. Will take definetely be going back again.
Absolutely amazing Sunday roast dinner, get so much for such a great price Compliments to Chef Matt
Had such a lovely Sunday roast! Definitely would be back! The new manger Michael was very welcoming and friendly.
Lovely meal on their first night excellent service xx
Excellent Sunday roast! Good beer selection and really friendly staff.
Had our wedding reception here last week and it was absolutely perfect. Great staff who were extremely helpful and courteous, great food (which we've had an abundance of comments about how good it was) beautiful garden and just a fantastic wedding venue at a great price. Thank you to everyone at the white horse for helping make our day so perfect.
We had our wedding reception at the White Horse last week and it was lovely. Sarah was amazing during the whole process. The food was fantastic and cannot fault the level of customer service we received on our special day. Sarah and the team did a fantastic job of decorating the pub and ensuring everything went to plan. I would definitely recommend the white horse as a wedding reception venue.
Nice family pub, dog friendly. roast dinners a must so yummy
We booked a table for a Sunday dinner at 5pm, we know this is quite late and didn’t expect everything that be available. Happily all meats were available and they were delicious. The food was fresh and didn’t taste like it had been there all day. I can honestly say, I was one of the best roasts I have had in a restaurant/pub. Just one criticism would be the sundae’s, they weren’t as good as expected. Unfortunately they didn’t have cream and weren’t built up as a sundae normally is with layers. The staff were delightful, very polite and friendly. I can truly recommend The White Horse, Old Welwyn, and will be back. Thank you for a lovely experience 😊
Charming little pub with excellent drinks & a great menu.
My dad's local for a number of years the pub has seen some ownership changes but a recent visit confirmed the pub is in good hands. The menu selection is excellent and reasonably well priced and the evening set menu at £16 for two courses represents great value. With a good choice of beers lagers ciders and a friendly attentive service we will definitely be returning.
lovely meal for the 2 of us as managed to get a table on christmas eve. Venison and whole of meal full of flavour and cooked to perfection. Good size portions. Lovely evening in a old beamy cosy pub.
Came here today for a roast dinner with 3 friends and was amazing , the staff were polite, patient and had smiles on their faces , the atmosphere was good and kept getting busier , staff remained calm and done a great job , food was great and also so much of it ! defo recommend visiting !
I had a meal here with some friends. The staff were very friendly and competent, I food came on time and it was spectacular. My friends and I discussed that we would highly recommend coming here again.
Me and my family love the white horse, dog friendly and family friendly and we love coming for lunch in the garden in summer with the dogs 💗 great atmosphere, always lots of events going on
Excelent Sunday roast enjoyed the rugby here was a great atmosphere and lovely staff
Always enjoy my visit here, excellent food and a super friendly team. Definitely recommend!
Fantastic spot for a bite to eat. Had the house burger, cooked to perfection. The pint had a clean taste, rather than feeling like it came from the bottom of a barrell. Would recommen.
Lovely atmosphere, managerial staff making a clear positive effort, good service and friendly staff, cope well under pressure during busy periods. Try hard to meet customer requests. All staff have a good rapport with locals. Good food.
Visited on Tuesday lunch time for the lunch time menu.(£13) Though not busy the food was freshly cooked and hot. Non greasy chips. Pleasantly surprised. Would visit again
Really lovely, cosy pub with good food. Our most recent visit was for a family celebration in the pub’s function room and the staff couldn’t have been more helpful. Highly recommend this pub!
Had a lovely burger and beer on Tuesday evening, Food was quick. Service was top notch. Recommendations were given and great conversation from a blonde young lady. Good choice of lager on draught. Can’t fault anything about the place.
We were made very welcome midweek by a friendly young barman and enjoyed lunchtime food and relaxed drinks. Loved chatting at the bar, then, when needed, were given space for a private conversation. Invitation to get us more drinks was perfectly timed. We will be back 😊
The waiters here were so friendly, they made our visit! We came in for a Sunday roast, which was delicious. I don't eat rapeseed oil and they made sure to accomodate me, giving me something else to replace the food that was cooked in rapeseed oil (which was only the yorkshire pudding, parsnips and carrots). Really great service as some places don't accomodate so well. The waiters were also super friendly - they were up for a laugh which we really appreciated, as so many places don't value good service anymore. The only reason I knocked a star off for atmosphere was because there were some extremely noisy children in the restaurant who were unbearable - others in the restaurant complained about them. Not the pub's fault as they can't control the noise of the children at all, but it made it difficult to have a nice conversation at points. But we loved the food and the attitude of all the staff :)
Have visited The White Horse many times for drinks, meals, a family birthday party and baby shower. The food is always of a good standard, not too long a wait and the staff polite and attentive. Special occasion buffet food and organisation is hard to fault.
We ate here last week and despite having to wait 50 minutes for our lunch (with no apology for the lateness) the food was well worth the wait and absolutely delicious. As a vegetarian, I often find it difficult to find good choices and this restaurant did not disappoint with the variety. Service was friendly and welcoming and it was a nice clean place. We would definitely come back.
Our baby shower at the White Horse was all that we could’ve asked for and worked perfectly. Their function room is a great size, cozy pub decorated, and private use of sound system, custom table/chairs arrangement, able to decorate with own items, private use of patio. Buffet catering was excellent, came out spot on-time, hot drinks station, and very reasonably priced. Amy and her staff are very friendly but most of all extremely helpful and accommodating - felt like our event was a priority to them.
We booked the dining area for my birthday lunch for 32 people. The food was hot tasty and well priced. Amy and Miguel and the staff could not have been more welcoming and nothing was too much trouble for them. I had a fabulous day and so did all of my friends . Back today to watch the rugby.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We had a fantastic experience here and can’t recommend it enough! The atmosphere is welcoming and relaxed, making it perfect for families. The staff were incredibly friendly and went out of their way to make sure both adults and kids felt comfortable and looked after. The food was delicious, well-priced, and there was something for everyone on the menu. The kids’ options were great, and it was refreshing to see a place that truly caters to families without sacrificing quality. Everything arrived promptly and was cooked perfectly. It’s clear this is a well-run, community-focused pub/restaurant where people genuinely care about their customers. We’ll definitely be back and will be recommending it to friends and family. A real local gem!
We had a fantastic Christmas meal here for a table of 9. The turkey festive dinner was brilliant a decent sized plate full of festive delights. Red cabbage, Brussels, parsnips, 2 big slices of turkey, homemade Yorkshire and pigs in blankets. All very delicious, excellent wine choice and lots of festive cheer. I had Christmas pudding and my boyfriend had the sticky toffee pudding both get a big thumbs up. I would recommend booking a meal here.
I used to visit this place over the space of last couple years. Definitely had my ups and downs upon my visits. In the last year of visiting at least once a month the improvements and care to the pub have been dead noticeable!! The quality of service had stunned me, as any visit in the last months had been a pleasure. Attentive but not overbearing. Able to have a funny, flowing conversations with the staff and the landlady always takes that extra time and care towards her guests. The food is phenomenal, with a extensive choice of food, on top of them happily accommodating allergies or substitutions. Yes, at times we have come back here and food wasn’t top notch as another time, but it’s always been during extremely busy times alas I grant understanding. Definitely my and my families go to!
Decent pub. Very friendly service. Not the biggest range of cask beer but well kept and cool. Really nice beer garden in the surprisingly warm weather. Ideal after a long country walk. Would come again for sure. Nice food especially starters and desert
Very tasty roast with a lovely view in the garden. Staff were also very friendly and covid secure. No heaters for those who sit on the garden benches, so make sure to wrap up! Service was a bit slow, and unfortunately we waited 30 minutes for dessert which arrived burnt. However, the staff kindly gave us a full refund on this item.
Delicious food and fantastic service!
This pub was a really good find. Served by friendly staff. There is plenty of outdoor seating front and back (lovely garden) with BBQ area, outdoor sheltered TV, and several cosy pods. Nice eating area in doors. Spacious bar area with plenty of drink choices.
Service was excellent, but you pay for it in the service charge. Nicely decorated pub with a relaxed atmosphere. We had roast beef, which was very overcooked and tough. The small carrots had a weird hard skin with a soft centre. We also ordered cauliflower cheese, which was not very cheesy. Sticky toffee pudding was very nice. It's a shame the roast dinner was poor compared to other local pubs.
We were unlucky to have a very loud group of women at the only other occupied table, which made conversation difficult. However the food was amazing & I truly couldn't fault it. The service was sporadic due to staff engagement with, what I have to admit was a very cute dachshund puppy. Im not entirely sure that handwashing between handling the dog & serving drinks was implemented with much regularity. Would I return? Well the food was very good & that may entice me to try it again.
The pub was very busy on a Friday evening and the staff could not handle how busy it was. Staff refused to serve cocktails as it was too busy and were very slow. It is a shame as the garden is lovely.
I’m extremely disappointed with our recent visit. We booked our table a week in advance for 7 guests at 5pm on a Sunday, yet nothing about the experience suggested the restaurant was prepared for us — or for any customers. Service was incredibly slow, and the staff were poorly dressed and had noticeably bad attitudes. When our food finally arrived, we were told they had run out of key items, including stuffing for the roast chicken and stuffing roast, no peas, and the Yorkshire puddings were the tiny pre-made ones. The food itself was cold, bland, and lacked seasoning. The “honey glazed parsnips” turned out to be a single parsnip that was so hard it couldn’t be cut. The pigs in blankets were completely inedible because they weren’t cooked properly. To make matters worse, when we asked to speak to the manager, the young waiter come to ask why we wanted the manager instead of coming over themselves. Even the bill took far too long to arrive, and despite everything, and the amount taken off was not a reflection of the experience we had. And after going up and saying more needed to come off we agreed on a figure which was still not worth what we experienced. Overall, this was a deeply disappointing experience from start to finish, one that we were looking forward too and one I decided to bring 6 friends too. I wouldn’t recommend this restaurant to anyone.
The food today was less than mediocre, I'm sure nothing was fresh, limp vegetables Yorkshire puddings flat, but edible. The eating area was colder than outside which wasn't great, but we made the most of it! Gone the days of fresh roasts from Andy Singers days!!! 1 star for the food because it was edible, 5 stars for the service, I think her name was Anabel, in fact the guy behind the bar was also good. 3 stars for atmosphere just because of sentimental reasons. To The White Horse Manager, please sort this out, don't do Sunday lunch if it's not all fresh, it certainly was disappointing today, and I know you can do better. Oh and tge kitchen staff should be dressed appropriately, not in shorts, just my opinion. Last thing, the menu was rather short because you had run out of, new potatoes. steak and vegetarian options.
It's a shame that this beautiful pub with chill outdoor area and decent food is ruined by disgraceful bar staff. Can't calculate, doesn't understand menu items, when challenged on an incorrect total becomes rude. Unfortunate, it could be stunning.
Was really hopeful that the new ownership would be positive. Staff were incredibly rude unnecessarily to me and my guests, ruined a special occasion for me, felt I had vouched for the place as I had invited people who had not been before. Seemed overwhelmed and without the ability to communicate in a sensitive way. Proceed with caution if you are planning to celebrate something special.
One of the worst meals I have ever had! There was a large group of us, we were kept waiting for over an hour for our food. When it arrived, the pork tenderloin with crackling turned out to be pork belly, which was so fatty it was inedible. When asked about the crackling, we were told none was available. The parsnips were missing from the plate, and when asked, a bowl came out with virtually raw parsnips in! which when told were removed and never replaced! One pork meal was replaced with a beef meal but the server had added the creamed leek to the plate even though the person had advised they were allegic to leeks and they were not on the pork meal, by the time the server was back available the meal was cold, an offer of a replacement meal was turned down due to everyone else had finished eating by then. So one of our party went without food completely. The green cabbage turned out to be red cabbage in a very sweet sauce, and the rest of the veg was overcooked and pretty grim. The pork meals were removed from the bill after speaking to the manager, who apologised, and said it had all changed but sadly not the menu (serving staff could of been told of the change) There were also two very noisy groups in the room with shouting, screaming children, which made it nearly impossible to have a conversation, as the room was very empty and echoey. Sadly, our Christmas get-together was completely spoilt by this.
