The ribs were delicious, very meaty and fall off the bone.
Good was great and tasty. Large portion of food.
Oh my Goodness! Yall this is some good barbeque. Kudos to Mr Chris Perez in Atascosa, TX. The customer service is exceptional, and the food is amazing, fresh and tender. The price is reasonable and portion is perfect.. Stop by for a treat. ..
Excellent sliced BBQ. Both spicy and regular sauce are very good! You get a choice of lean or moist sliced beef and both are phenomenal!!
It was a fantastical delicious experience. Everything they have and serve is up to the minute fresh and delicious. The employees are very friendly, down to earth type. One feels good eating there. My family loved it too.
I have eaten here several time before, so I expected it to be good. I wasn’t disappointed. I got a sliced brisket sandwich since I was taking it to eat while on the road. The brisket was very good. I don’t usually use sauce, but I tried some on the side. For me, it was a little heavy on the artificial smoke flavor, but the overall taste was decent. I’ll be back again.
On your way out of Corpus Christi (in San Antoni's direction), This B-Awesome place exists! REAL food options; from good BBQ and alligator, to baked desserts, Fried chicken, down to your "on the road snacks," & beverages. You can even FUEL UP while you're there!! Que más quieres!? Lol!! We did a pound Family platter of brisket & sausage (Reg.&Jalp.) with sides. ALSO TRIED THE ALLIGATOR, plus 5 fountain drinks (spent about 100$). Per my personal preference the Mac-n-Chz is almost perfect (could use a tad seasoning). The potato salad wasn't for my pallet either. But overall everything was GREAT! Definitely a wonderful option for locals and travelers alike.
Juicy turkey! Tender flavorful brisket! 10/10 great food.
Some of the best BBQ I’ve tried in Texas. I always passed it by when on road trips never knowing what I was missing. The Brisket, Sausage, Potato Salad, and ribs were all made perfectly. I can’t stress enough how much I was impressed by a seemingly small BBQ Joint. WOW. Good job y’all.
This brisket is deliriously moist, the corn is transformative Will be stopping here again
Stopped for gas in the middle of nowhere and this place appeared. It was relatively empty in the evening. It was kind of a "cafeteria" style. You order, pay and then sitdown wherever you want. You can order the meat by the pound (or whatever increments) or as plates that come with sides. I just had meat, and no sides. The brisket was AMAZING. It was so tender and just fell apart. The ribs were good, just not amazing. There was quite a bit of fat on them. There was 2 kinds of bbq sauce, and an area to get all your own fixings.
Have stopped here over a dozen times and has been good every time but once, which earns my recommendation. They serve a wide variety of bbq meats, including briskeet, sausage, ribs, smoked turkey, etc. Aldo chipped beef bbq sandwices. Multiple sides to select from. Beer too. Good stop to and from deep So Tx to SanAntonio. ( If you found my review helpful, please "like" it for me. Thanks! )
Super good food and I loved how there was a gas station next to it because my car was running low on gas
I used to go here quite often with the karns family it is a really good barbecue place the smell of the wood and I believe they cook on an open fire
We had A Beef Rib with the Potato Salad and Corn and a Brisket Sandwich and I tell you it was Great! The service was fast and nice and loved to eat out in the patio. First time here definitely won’t be the last! I was gonna post a picture it was so excited about having a beef Rib I completely forgot it was almost as big as the plate!
I had the pleasure of ordering the beef ribs, accompanied by corn and baked beans. The meal was delightful, and I certainly plan to return. The service, provided by Amanda and John, was exceptional; they were both outgoing and very welcoming. They served with a smile and even offered a sample, along with excellent recommendations for my order. The only issue with the location was how cold it was inside, as if the heater were broken.
Servers had a good attitude which provided a good atmosphere. Most food items on menu are prepared in advance since they can take a while to cook, especially the meat 😉, but the fried items were all prepared fresh when ordered. My husband also took note while he waited that cleanliness and sanitation was being adhered to, like changing gloves after preparing every persons order into starting a new one. Men's bathroom was also well kept for a multi- stall, urinal and sinks size room. We were pleasantly surprised to see the portioning of the sides, we ordered fries, okra and gator, all fried fresh. Also. The main dish we ordered a 3 meat platter (w/ 2 sides), turkey, chicken and brisket. The turkey was juicy for white meat, breast meat sliced and flavorful with and without the BBQ sauce provided. The brisket was juicy! Almost falling apart on its own and I wish we bought more of it! The chicken, sorry, after eating the brisket it was so hard to enjoy it as much as I wish I could lol. Overall, the best part of all of this? This entire meal was around $30, w/out drinks (we already had our own), and it fed two adults. So it was great for our road trip. Thank you! Hope to stop by again.
A WELCOME AND CLEAN STOP ON I-37. The counter staff was very friendly and suggested we have the child's plates to save money (we are both seniors). We both ordered brisket plates that came with a single side each. My wife got the regular pinto beans, and I got BBQ pinto beans that were sauced and had chunks of sausage in it. The meals came with medium drinks, and the portions of meat and sides were generous. It was less than $20.00 for both meals combined. We will return here in the years ahead.
Our 1st stop coming from San Antonio, headed to Port A for the weekend. The Food was excellent! I had the Ribs and Brisket plate and a Budweiser. There's plenty of BBQ SAUCE, PICO , BREAD AND JALAPENOS at the Salsa Bar. Just Go there and enjoy. The air conditioning was great in the open environment and Staff was friendly and welcoming. Get more sides you will not be disappointed. The food is made with Love 💕 The Mack and Cheese and Cole Slaw is VERY GOOD. The GREEN BEANS ROCKED TOO!!
Great food! Reasonably priced! Everything is homemade - potato salad, pies, side dishes. Excellent beef brisket and friendly service! Nice stop on your way south to Corpus or Port A!

Good BBQ, staff is pretty friendly. Strawberry Cheesecake was on point. They just need to explain things a little better. Friend ordered sausage. They asked regular or spicy. She took spicy. But they didn't tell her it was spicy cheese, not just spicy. She didn't want cheese in the sausage. But they traded it out for her.
FOODS GOOD A BIT PRICEY BUT I BELIEVE ITS WORTH IT.. I RECOMMEND BRISKET , RIBS AND OKRA IS GOOD.. SWEET TEA IS EXCELLENT.... ALOT OF SPACE TO EAT INSIDE OR OUTSIDE.. SERVICE IS QUICK AND ATTENDEES ARE GREAT & FRIENDLY... ITS OFF THE HIGHWAY NEXT TO A TRUCK STOP STORE SO IF YOUBON YOUR WAY TOWARDS CORPUS GOOD PLACE TO STOP N GRAB SOMETHING TO EAT... OH ! GRAB A DESERT THEY'RE ALL GOOD !!!!!!
Had lunch there. We got the 2 meats plate. The brisket was delicious and very tender. The pork rib was good too. Love the pickle/onion and jalapeño bar. We really enjoyed it!
Brisket was a bit too fatty for my preference. The sausage (jalapeno cheese) was dried out and oily. The pecan cobblers doesn't have a good flavor and the BBQ sauce by condiment bar wasnt heated was cold. And there were so many gnats around it.
It’s a Texas debate. Brisket and ribs were cooked great just not very smoky. Sauce was awesome not too sweet with the spicy having enough heat to make most people happy. Had the corn and bean as sides and both were delicious. I like my meat to have some more smoke why my lower rating. Plenty of room during our lunch to fit my whole family of 13.
First time here and everything looks good, but my eyes were hungry. The place is alright. The service was not the most inviting. The brisket was good, the buns looked amazing, but they were a bit tough and thick for my preference. The sides were pretty good, still can't find the best Mac & Cheese out there. Peach cobbler was good. Love all the bottled cokes they have. The set up is cool. Over all it was good .....just not the best.
Good tasting brisket! A plate is enough for two persons unless you have a huge appetite.
Very clean restaurant all around, well mannered staff, convenient location(specially for those with an RV), but food is a little overpriced for the quality and flavor of the food, brisket is a little to dry despite having fat attached. A little over $30 for a sandwich of turkey and another of brisket. @memerios1020
The sandwiches at Choke Canyon BBQ are huge and so good. It’s not a fancy place but it is clean with big long tables. You order your food and it’s put together in front of you by some nice people. We recommend it.
Nice place to stop for a rest and recharge during a road trip, the turkey sandwhich was excellent. Turkey was moist, well seasoned, and smoked perfectly. The tea was bold and pretty fresh. The coleslaw was a little less fresh, tasting a little like old mayo. I would probably try a different side next time. I did enjoy the outdoor area. Service was adequate.
While it may not be taking 1st place at a competition the BBQ here was really good! I had a 2 meat plate with brisket and sausage with potato salad and cowboy beans as the sides. Great flavor all the way around. My only issue was there was quite a bit of fat on the brisket. Maybe longer cooking at a lower temp to render more of it down would help.

I mean it’ll make a turd, but this is not good bbq. It wasn’t fresh and the taste showed the day I visited. Brisket tasted like pot roast, sausage was barely warm, beans tasted like water. 2 thumbs…
This place is consistently decent. I've had a few items on the menu, and it's never BAD. But it's also never good. I've had both chopped and sliced sandwiches, as well as the fried gator and some desserts. I'd recommend against the gator. It's not that it's bad, but in my opinion you don't get your money's worth for how pricey it is.
Brisket and turkey were good. Not overcooked and were moist. Bbq beans and pinto beans were great. Staff looked miserable and were very short with us. With others as well. They looked like they didn’t want to be there.
Food had good flavor. Meat was tender and flavorful but could be cut smaller or better. Beans and pickles were excellent. Staff could use some training
Second visit. We arrived at 11:00 realizing they had just opened but didn’t have fried okra, chicken tenders or fried fish. Employees seemed annoyed by our questions. Ended up with baked potatoes for two family members and brisket sandwich for a third which were all good. However, it was also difficult to choose a table inside because none of them had been wiped down and had visible leftover food on most tables. Sorry ladies and hope things improve but may be rethinking a third stop.
Everything was good. Average. Not amazing but good. The brisket was a little fatty for me. The ribs were good but not fall off the bone good. So a very average BBQ place. Which is fine in Texas where average is still better than most places best.
Food is super hit or miss. Sometimes the brisket is good, sometimes it sucks
Not sure how they have a 4.1 star. It’s not for their food. Ribs still have the tips on them, brisket was way too fatty, but the sausage was good. BBQ beans lacked creativity and the Mac and cheese is no good either. And they claim they serve gator which is chicken. Don’t let them tell you other wise.
Brisket was good. Sausage was dry and beans were cold
headed home from rockport and decided to stop for dinner, 2 girls sat there talking literally in front of us, and never greeted us, also told us they had no fried food.. it was 7:30 and they close at 9.. unsure why they couldn’t make anything fried at that time. food looked left out and old. put us off so much we had to leave, prices are too high for food being left out and service being that crappy. coming from a small town, this is not how you treat customers. you’re supposed to make them feel at home and we did not feel that. 🙁 service needs to get better!🙏🏽
Driving back from corpus and didn't want typical fast food option. So I spotted this place and stopped. Great looking place. Looks like what a BBQ restaurant should look like. I Needed something quick and convenient, so I went with the sliced BBQ sandwich., not the combo. They had some good looking sides, and off brand chip selection, but I was going to be driving and eating. At $11.99 it was decently packed in there on a nice thick, but soft bun. Can't say it looked like the freshest brisket I've ever see, probably due to heat lamps, but it was still tender and moist. Unfortunately, just not a lot of smoke flavor. 🤷♂️ the cashier was friendly and helpful and included barbecue sauce. Nothing homemade, probably something like Cattleman's. They do have condiment bar with some nice crisp jalapenos, onions, pickles, etc.! 🔥 it was good, but not great. It was filling and did the trick! Will I be back? Not sure. 🤔
We weren't impressed with the food or the overall environment. It looks much nicer from the outside. I didn't like having to order at the counter or being served on Styrofoam plates with plastic utensils. The food was not hot, but it wasn't ice cold either. We did like the BBQ sauce.
Ehhhh...it's just okay... let me explain why. The service was mediocre. It was our first time there and so we were pretty disappointed. No friendly smiling faces. They all looked miserable and were very short with us(my coworkers and myself). The brisket was fully cooked and moist. The corn had no flavor and the mac and cheese was a little dry. The ribs were edible and the chicken was under cooked. I didn't want to take a picture of the raw meat because my hands were already dirty but speaking of dirty......the restaurant and restrooms were not very clean and they were running low on toilet paper and hand soap. I'm glad I was just passing by. I've came and saw and experienced and will not be returning.
Check your order before you leave! What kind of (profanity removed) gives you all fat brisket for your order!! I have been several times, and the turkey is probably the only thing worth going for.

The food was alright and this spot is fairly clean. Nothing special, but not too bad. We did notice how unfriendly the staff was with not even cordial greetings.

I really had high hopes for this place. I mean a 4.2 rating with over 1600 entries, I figured it would be a decent stop on the trip home from the coast. I don't know if they were having an off day but the food was disappointing. Particularly since we spent 98.00 to feed 2 adults and three kids. Brisket appeared to be rushed. The fat cap was left untrimmed and the smoke ring was barely detectable. It was very tough, a sure sign it was not left on the smoker long enough as the collagen and connective tissues had not broken down. Ribs went to the other end of the spectrum. They were seriously overcooked. Dry and burnt. Completely devoid of moisture. It was like jerky on a stick. Chicken was a bit better, but dry. Sausage was good and properly smoked. Pinto beans were tasteless and lacked seasoning. Potato salad was actually really good. Liked the pickle/onion/jalapeño and salsa bar. The dining area was clean, but bathrooms needed serious attention. Service from behind the counter was decent. Fountain drinks were unavailable...the machine is broken.
No one greeted us as we walked in. Flies everywhere. They didnt have any fried fiods at all. And crew just looked lazy. No bread available until we told them. Also no silverware or plastic ware put out. 2 meat plate was $18 and came w a tiny scoop of your choice of sides and small amount of meat. Definitely not worth it. Food was also cold. When i requested it be warmed up even in a microwave the girl had an attitude about it. Definitely not coming again. Would have been better off getting the food from the gas station next door.
Having lunch while on a trip and thought great a BBQ place. I was excited to try this place but as soon as I sensed the attitude the staff had as my wife ordered her food I was having second thoughts about this place. Well, this was some of the driest BBQ I have ever tasted. The brisket, turkey, and sausage tasted like they were kept in a heat lamp for hours. I was hoping the sides would be better but nope. The pinto beans were cold and the macaroni and cheese were also cold and missing the cheese.
I have eaten there twice and won't go back . The brisket is not trimmed before they smoke it. The sausage wasn't edible. The sides aren't good.
Meat was cold and then had to argue with the server abt it being cold. Disappointing for sure, won't be back.

bbq is Oven made. There is no pits in sight.\nFood is not inviting. Looks better on Billboard.\nBrisket is wrapped in plastic wrap.

Skip This Place\n\nTasteless, fatty brisket. No smoke flavor and lots of fat. Beans only so-so. At least the place was clean and the service was acceptable, but do not recommend.
Rude people don’t know much about anything. Careless employees. Loud and not clean bf food is greasy. People walk out don’t go

Restaurant was dirty. Gnats in the pickles and bbq sauce. Food was cold. Tables were sticky, couldn't enjoy our food because we kept having to swat flies and gnats away. We asked for more pickles and we were told they were out.
Girl up front working right now at 6:13 was rude! Instead of her saying we don’t have this and this available, she says we’re not frying today! I told her what does that mean? She says like frying like chicken and tenders. My suggestion to y’all before someone ordering is to let them know first. No wonder the reviews are so bad! & we are not even for the area we were passing through. Do better lady! Put a smile on your face lady & spot spitting when talking!
This was always our “last stop before Mexico”. Brisket tacos or sandwiches were our facorites. Suffice to say we’ve made dozens of stops here. Never again! On Friday, we were served the worst slop to ever bear the name “BBQ”. My wife and I ordered chopped brisket sandwiches. Neither was edible. In place of chopped brisket, we got stringy fat and chewy sinew. Now, I’m not opposed to fat. Buttery, well-rendered, tongue-coating fat is “where the flavor comes from”. This wasn’t that. One would expect the meat to be “chopped” as the name would imply. In fact, had they thoroughly chopped the meat, they could, at least, try and camouflage it among the lean meat. They couldn’t be bothered to do so, apparently. We were served stringy ropes of goo. We tried to pick out the gristle and sinew. The remaining meat wasn’t enough for 1/2 a sandwich. I’m sure the owner of this place has worked hard for years to perfect his brisket cooking technique. The food has been great for years. He has had a heck of a run. It’s over. Avoid this trash at all costs.
Food was dry, the tables were dirty and sticky, the the customer service was terrible and rude because I asked for 2 items on the menu that they apparently ran out of. And the bathrooms were disgusting. Sad to see this restaurant stop being so mismanaged.
Was over charge by $11 on each plate after questioning it to staff the were rude about it, I said where does it say it in the menu that what I order went from $17.99 to 28.99..she said yes I saw that it’s not on there I have to call to get it fixed..This is BS they just want to over charge people
The service was great.. the barbecue and the sauce tasted good.. the only problem is.. the flies thought so too.. flies kept landing on my food and I had to keep waving them away.. I guess they were enjoying the dining experience more than I was.. at least they didn't charge me for the flies.. they're free..
18 min to close and they locked the doors when they saw me walking up to the door. I just wanted some brisket to go. But it’s ok. Karma. Remember that.
I was disappointed with temperature of the food for the amount we paid. My wife got a brisket sandwich and it was almost room temperature, the brisket was pretty bland and dry. The BBQ sauce in dining room was also at room temp. Not to mention the sticky tables we sat down to eat on. We definitely won't be returning back... Be wise and eat and the gas station next door. Cheaper and probably Way Better!!!
There was gnats getting on our food and flying around us. Best thing was the beans.
this was my first time trying this place, and the barbecue sauce was filled with small bugs as well as the bread. my sandwich bread was hard and when i got up to ask the ladies for barbecue sauce they said i could get some from the jars and once i told them there was bugs she then proceeded to roll her eyes and give me some to go. i overheard her tell her coworker about there being bugs but nothing was done.
Brisket was super dry. Bread for sandwiches was hard. salad was good! Flies inside- can’t eat without fighting for your life. Everyone seems mad.
Watch what they charge you. Multiple times now I have had “custom item” added to my order. Charging people extra as a tip. And had the audacity to try to convince me it was right instead of oh I hit the wrong button. My co worker had the same experience not just me. Ripping off travelers who don’t know any better. Lost my business.
Sad I have to give them 1 star for bad service. It just seems to be the new norm and I'm not having it. The food is really good, the customer service in non-existent. Not sure what's going on anymore, these young people yelled and screamed for higher pay, mandatory tips and expect the world for making a sandwich that my 8 year old granddaughter could make just as good if not better. Spent 70$ but couldn't get the girl to fry up some okra because they were short handed, yet 3 girls were working and 2 additional people in the back and 2 people. I was the only one in line but had to wait because she was busy chatting with another employee, I paid for a large unsweetened tea and they were out did offer to make the tea or refund me just said you could get a soda or something else. Like the food but I work to hard to spend my money at a place that treats me like I'm a bother.
I was disappointed with my recent visit. For $14.99, I received a single chopped BBQ sandwich, which felt overpriced for the portion. Unfortunately, the meat appeared to have flies around it, raising concerns about hygiene. Additionally, the flavor suggested the meat may not have been fresh, possibly prepared days earlier. I hope the restaurant addresses these issues to improve the dining experience.
I came for BBQ on a 12 hr road trip and left with beef. Just not the edible kind. The food was so dry I’m pretty sure it needed lotion and a glass of water. I’ve had crackers with more moisture. If this is “slow smoked,” it must’ve been forgotten on the grill overnight. Overall, the experience was about as enjoyable as chewing cardboard while being judged for it. Definitely won’t be back, and my taste buds are still filing a complaint. Yeah, choke canyon really did warn me tho, the food so dry, its literally a chocking hazard if not careful. To top it off, the service somehow matched the food bone dry. The ladies working the counter had straight up attitude. Coleslaw was good. Never again 💔.
BBQ was horrible, dry and cold. Keep driving. Outside patio dirty and flies all over the place. Food and service was not worth the money spent. I hope they improve since its a nice location and right off the highway.
Walked in 1.5 hrs to closing. Walked right back out. We were going to settle for just a sandwich because all the sides were left to dry out from much much earlier. The attitude from the girl working the food was more rotten than the crusty macaroni or the shriveled corn. When we asked what other sides they had, the previous shift was to be blamed for leaving them with nothing. Our family looked at each other with the look like we weren't about to get food poisoning from even a sandwich. Waste of time getting off the highway.
As truck drivers we will never again stop at this place , it’s bad enough we have what the road has to offer. Then we stop to eat at this decent looking restaurant, just to be disappointed by the food. It lacks flavor and very over priced, just drive to the McDonald’s instead. The bread on my sandwich could be used to build a house. 🏠
We are regular customers here. We live in the area. We normally have good food and good service. However, not today. I assume the boss was off, because the girls in the back did not care one bit about customer service. First, they gave me the wrong beans. Then I asked about pecan pie or lemon merengue pie. She said they may have some in the back. Then just stood there. She asked, do you want me to go check? Should I have to say yes? Then she brought me Coconut creme pie instead and it was even frozen. There was no unsweetened tea and we had to ask them twice to make some. There were no lids for the cups. The bread was hard. No containers for bbq sauce. It was just a bad experience. I am sure we will be back. We are hoping this was just a bad day, because they are normally good.
