10 stars out of 5! This was the first place that my husband and I ate at mid-pandemic, after recently moving to Winchester. And it was such a great experience that we've never stopped going back - no really, we're there at least once a week. It's got a small, family vibe with staff and food quality that rival much bigger, fancier joints with higher price points. Fresh ingredients, thoughtful and creative menu planning, family-friendly, reasonable prices, options for those with food allergies, engaging cooks and servers that know us like family -- and all of this right in downtown Winchester! They also host amazing wine dinners where you get the chance to sample a range of lovely beverages that aren't easily found in liquor stores, and have done a fantastic job catering for our family holiday meals and parties. We honestly never expected to find a place like this in the Boston area, it's a true gem and a source of community, and we take all our friends there.
When it's *this* hot out, all I want are 'summer light' bites Luckily A Tavola in Winchester fits the bill! What I love is that everything was so fresh and the menu is everchanging; the night I dined there, Chef Joe spoke highly of the fisherman he got the branzino from and the farmers market he got some of the produce used in that night's dishes from. Some of the dishes I was able to taste (& my phone ate first) were: * Beet Salad - horseradish crema, cucumbers, whole grain vin * Branzino - blistered shishitos, shaved artichoke salsa verde * Halibut - olive oil poached herloom tomatoes, basil, oregano & garlic * Strawberry Shortcake - vanilla white cake, fresh and macerated strawberries, cream cheese whip * Blueberry Ricotta Cake - ricotta, blueberry glaze All of these dishes were complimented by my two craft beers - Bent Water Brewing's Premium Lager on Draft and Lone Pine Brewing's Summer Lights Citrus Wheat Ale. A Tavola, like their food menu, has a rotating beer & cider menu featuring new brews from New England craft breweries and cideries. Incredible food in a warm, intimate space featuring an open kitchen, newly opened expansion and a patio space to take advantage of this beautiful weather! A neighborhood restaurant that is truly invested in the community through collaborations, giving back and even partnering with the local elementary school to run a Seed to plate program to educate children about how to harvest ta garden and turn it's bounty into food for the table - a true seed to plate full circle! They also offer cooking classes, wine dinners, BBQ & Bourbon Dinners so keep an eye on their Instagram and website for upcoming events!
Update Antipasto, smoked house made mozzarella sticks, more cocktails than I can even remember, fresh burrata over beets, grilled eggplant with Calabrese sauce, tuna tartare, whole fish bronzino, halibut, an amazing housemaid Burger with in house grind combo. Then dessert... This was an amazing night for a Taste of New England Supper Club. Thank you to @chefcarli @a_tavola_winchester and all who joined us A Tavola in Winchester serves the freshest scratch made Italian favorites Like Antipasti, carbonara and arancini But my favorite dish at A Tavola is Chef Joe's Bolognese made with basil, oregano, parmesan and a beef, pork & veal ragu, over fresh tagliatelle pasta.
Joe and the staff at A Tavola go above and beyond at every turn to make you feel at home. Super cozy space, great outdoor patio and cute bar set up that looks into the kitchen. The cocktails, wine list and menu are ever changing, always fresh and interesting. From wine dinners to burger nights + cocktail classes they have done a wonderful job putting together a community of fun loving foodies. Joe took over the space just prior to the pandemic and I admired his proactive approach and efforts to engage the community. He never takes his foot off the gas and does everything to ensure each person who steps through the door walks out happy. A few of my fav dishes are the rabbit, the roasted pork, Bronzino, tuna tartar + believe it or not the chicken is outstanding and of course the cookies for dessert (get the adult version). The pastas are all homemade and the bolognese is my husbands fav. I’m realizing I just listed their entire menu. So just go, eat, laugh with the staff and be happy!
Wow! What a pleasant surprise! My friends told me about this place as one of their favorites, and did Joe deliver! Their menu is constantly changing, but Joe still made me a carbonara that wasn’t on the menu that night. A carbonara with a little hit of wine and a little bit of onion to make it their own! Had a bite of the branzino, which had a marvelously crunchy exterior and a perfectly cooked interior. Finished with the sticky toffee. Also highly recommended!
Table was not ready when arrived. but the hospitality made up for it. Complimentary prosecco and at the end of dinner a dozen chocolate chip cookies. The antipasti is fantastic. Chicken is delicious. Excellent service.
Delicious dinner for two! We split a burrata salad & each enjoyed an entrée: gorgonzola ravioli & Grandma's cod, Greek-style. Save room for dessert! Smores & salted caramel gelato.
My friend suggested that I come and It was amazing. The shrimp gnocchi I had was surprisingly good with the butter garlic! The touch of basil is awesome!
Had an excellent gnocchi dish. Prosciutto appetizer was one of the best I’ve had.
Always fantastic food and service. Never disappoints.
Wonderful family owned restaurant with a staff that really cares. Joe and David are the secret sauce in the kitchen that make this Italian restaurant cook like clockwork. We sat at the chefs table and got an inside look at the teamwork behind this little slice of old school heaven.
My wife and I visited A Tavola for the first time tonight for our anniversary dinner. It was fantastic. The atmosphere was romantic, inviting and comfortable while still family-friendly. I could see myself coming here with friends, too. After just one bite of the bread I knew that the food was going to be great – and it certainly was. There was care put into the details like the beautifully thin slices of mortadella on our antipasti board, or the amount of torch on the s'mores dessert. The ragu bolognese and tortellini both hit all the right notes as well. This will sound like a ridiculous exaggeration, but I literally teared up at some point before our mains came out. I grew up in an Italian-American family, and the smells, tastes and textures brought back intense memories like going to buy fresh bread with my grandfather and eating homemade Sunday meals. You won't need a childhood like mine to enjoy A Tavola, but please trust me when I say that this is Italian food done right and at a more than reasonable prices. Bravi to the chef and the whole team. I'm looking forward to dining in again soon.
Can't speak highly enough of Chef Joe, David, Rachel, Andrew, and the entire staff at A Tavola. We've lived in town for several years and it became our favorite spot quite quickly. That's not just because the delicious, innovative, and seasonally fresh menu. The entire crew goes above and beyond to make you feel like family whether you're sitting at the counter on a casual weekday or having a date night. They never miss and we are so stoked to see them grow into the new space!
I loved the atmosphere, and the staff was short handed but extremely attentive to all tables. The antipasto was goo but I would have liked a little more choices. I loved my chicken dish, bread was delicious and a friend had bolognese which was very good. Great wine selection.
We have been here several times, either privately as a couple or through a business dinner, each time the meals are beyond excellent and fresh. No disappointments as you sometimes have at restaurants where the appetizers are great, but entrees are "ok", at A Tavola it is all excellent. Probably driven by a medium sized menu that allows all ingredients to be super fresh. And if there is something that's not on the menu, for example ensuring a dish is kosher (as much as possible), that's an option that gets catered on the fly. Service is on point as well, never have to wait for service and ambience is great. Place is intimate but still allows groups of 8 to have dinner (could probably be even 12) while each other table in the restaurant still can feel their own privacy. There are several seats with view on the kitchen, which are our personal favorites.
One of the best meals I had in a long time. We had the leak soup which was amazing. The flavors worked well. The burrata was another great app. The gorgonzola ravioli works so well. We finished it off with the sticky bread pudding which was a great way to end the meal!
After following A Tavola on Instagram for quite some time, I finally had a chance to visit last evening. Growing up in a passionate Italian family of cooks, I always enjoy frequenting Italian cuisine establishments. This one is of my very favorites. Why? For starters, the entire staff made me feel like coming home to family. The small and comfortable space was as cozy as it gets. The food? Absolutely scrumptious. I started with the Tuna Corda. The balance of the citrus and the tenderness of the fish was refreshing. Perfect portion also. I always try the bolognese on my first visit to a “new to me” restaurant. One of the very top dishes of the countless I have tried. I would highly recommend A Tavola to any Italian food lover. I will return as soon as soon as I am near Winchester, Massachusetts again. Thank you for a fabulous experience! Chris Del Rossi, Portland, Maine
I was there for a baby shower. Small but very quaint. The service was great and staff attentive. We were served a wonderful, unique selection of appetizers along with a great meal! Would highly recommend this restaurant!
An intimate dining experience. The restaurant can be packed since the dining area is extremely small. That being said the food is amazing. We went there on a Saturday night and the restaurant was completely full. The servers, while pleasant seem to be slightly overwhelmed, however when the food arrived we couldn't have been more pleased. I give the atmosphere a B+ and the food and A+.
Food is fantastic and not to mention the philanthropic endeavors of the owner. I believe it is important to know where your food comes from and how to grow it from the ground up. The food is authentic and cooked very well. Host was very nice as well. To top it off, it isn't a big chain. It is small and has a very good atmosphere. Loved the restaurant and will attend again.
It’s not wonder this place is ranked as one of the best Italian restaurants in the Boston area. Great location, easy parking. Great atmosphere inside. Attentive, friendly staff. And of course, the food is amazing. The Ragu Bolognese is a favorite. Vegetables and spices are all super fresh. 12 warm chocolate chip cookies for 13 bucks for dessert? Yes please.
The best Beets that I ever tried before. And I don't buy or make beets because I thought they were horrible. Honey truffle Beets as a Side of the Limon Spaghetti. Is the best combination of flavors that anybody can taste in the mouth. Fantastic. My GF ordered the Lemon and I got the classic Bolognese, traditional decision. At the end I finished eating the Lemon because she didn't like it, but it was PERFECT for me. I like the Bolognese too, but the mix of the truffle flavor with the asparagus with the handmade spaghetti: a m a z i n g !!!
Recently had dinner @ A Tavola, and from start to finish it was fantastic. Can’t speak highly enough about the service and food! Chef Joesph Carli was a true definition of hospitality, Anytime I find myself in the area I can assure that I will find myself back at this location! 10/10!!
A farm-to-table gem in Winchester. Small but hand-wringing menu -- so hard to choose. Spilt Bucotini and Bolognese with the wife. Will be back often.
First time going here. Small, cozy interior - friendly staff. A small, pricy menu done well. Highly recommend and look forward to coming back with nicer weather to take advantage of the outdoor dining
Chef Joe has created an enchanting outdoor patio setting this summer complete with lights, flowers, and the most delicious food and drinks. I fell in love with the Roasted Peach Bellinis (I recommend a pitcher) and the Rose Frozes. So much so, that we got some to take home in Joe’s individual pouches! Also love the antipasti app...the prosciutto is sliced so thin it’s heaven and the tuna tartare is so fresh! For the main course there is nothing better than Joe’s pasta dishes - especially the bolognese. Check it out! You’ll love it!
Visited Boston for an event that was hosted at A Tavola. Amazing place, great tasty food and super nice and polite staff. Old Fashion drink was amazing:-)
First time visitor though I have lived in town for years. We sat at the chefs counter where you can see the open kitchen. It makes for a great date night because you get dinner and a show so to speak. We had the apple burrata with prosciutto 10/10. The prosciutto is not dry and salty like so many other places. Our waitress gifted us an arancini which was simply incredible in a bed of pesto. We also had a bucatini and a chicken dish. Such a fun and amazing place. If you’re looking for fast the Cheesecake factory is a better choice for you. There is one chef pumping out his magic. Great date night place.
This has become our favorite local restaurant. The food is always excellent and everyone that works here is incredibly friendly. We love to sit at the kitchen bar so that we can chat with Joe and David when they aren't too slammed. The fact that every single night it is just the two of them doing all the cooking even after expanding the restaurant into the space next door is amazing.
Nice and cozy, you can have a relaxed dinner with friends or family. Service was amazing as they prepare some variations from the cocktails manu for us. Food was superb!
Absolutely fabulous! Joe, chef owner, spoiled me & my girlfriends with a wonderful meal & took time to chat with us for a few minutes. I loved the rustic, “cloth napkin” feel of the restaurant. Our server Agatha was very attentive & made suggestions when asked. I look forward to another meal there soon. A definite must try!
I really love the family friendly environment. I usually take the kids on Fridays and always feel welcome. My kids love the food! Especially the chicken tenders and pasta on the kids menu! So it makes take out for a busy sports mom easy! The restaurant is spacious and I can’t wait to see it with the new expansion in the works! It will be fun to grab a drink at the bigger bar that is going in!
Food was awesome. We liked the staff but felt like after our entrees we were forgotten about. We as a group laughed and talked and passed the time but we sat at 600 and didnt get out of the restaurant till after 830. The flow was all off. It wasn't a particularly busy night. We will return
A nice Italian restaurant. Enjoyed my meal quite a lot. The service is very good. The cocktails are excellent. The only thing that was out of place for such a great atmosphere and exceptional food was the music. They played all the hit songs from a Gen X prom. It was weird to have such a fine dining experience and hear 80's pop songs.
Food The appetiser was certainly the highlight of my dinner. I was impressed with the smashed white bean (not sure if that’s how they call it). I couldn’t tell what it was because even though it had a mild flavour, it was good. For entree, I ordered risotto, and I didn’t like it very much. The taste was fine, but it was too bland and plain to me, which made me feel like I was just eating some saucy rice. Everything else It is a cozy family style restaurant and the service was great. Everything
Nice place, great service. But they are heavy on the oils. If you're on a low fat diet. This is not the place. Food was tasty.
Went out to dinner tonight with some friends who recommended the place and said that they've gone several times and they enjoy the food. As we have never been here before we asked our friends for what they like to get when they visited the restaurant. They said the menu rotated so they never really have the same items on their menu. I get that some restaurants do it so it's totally normal. Before we get on to the food, one of the servers came up and asked us if we'd like some water; they offered still, tap, and sparkling. We first chose Still not really thinking anything of it, the server came over with a bottle of water and poured it we didn't say anything look totally fine, it wasn't until the end of the meal we were actually charged $6 for the bottle of water!! Okay next time I will definitely go with tap. We ordered some beverages, two Palomas, one beer and one lime Ricky. Drink prices weren't bad at all I mean $10 for a can of beer is not crazy but alcoholic beverages between $12 and $18 are in the norm these days. There were about eight different appetizers, we ordered two of them, we got the Roasted Eggplant (wasn't too bad I think it was a little spicy from the sauce, I did like the goat cheese that was mixed in with the lettuce leaves) and the Smoky Mozzarella Sticks (I thought these were pretty good, I'm not a big fan of anything that's smokey especially drinks, but I actually liked the smokiness of the mozzarella sticks. One of our friends wasn't crazy about it but he's a picky guy anyway). As for our meals, one of us got the cheeseburger And he thought it was okay nothing special but the cheeseburger, he also said that the fries were a bit soggy not really on the crunchy side. I'm somebody that generally eats french fries no matter how they taste and I was picking them off his plate and dipping them in the sauce of my tortell (more on that to come). Another one of our friends got the Bucatini, a spaghetti type dish with mushrooms and mozzarella. She said it was cooked over al dente, didn't really know that was much of a thing I didn't try any of the pasta but it still looked really good. Don't get me wrong the presentation of everything was amazing! Now on to the final dishes, my fiance and I both ordered the tortellini and was surprised at how amazingly delicious the cheesiness of the tortellini was. We weren't too crazy about how they put arugula on top of it it was just a mix of flavors with the cheese that I wasn't too crazy about. Also the sauce at first I thought was delicious and then when I found out it was some kind of variation of pea soup and some kind of sauce I was a little taken aback by it. I would have much preferred it to be in either a red sauce with some sprinkled Parmesan cheese on top of it even though there was Parmesan cheese in the middle of the tortellini, or even in a creamy Alfredo sauce, mmmmn that would have been PERFECT! Now we get to the bill... Between the four of us, with a Lime Ricky, 3 alcoholic drinks, 2 appetizers, 4 entrees, that $6 bottle of still water and a soda, which also included, yes INCLUDED an $8 "Kitchen Team Fee (4%)" [what in tarnation?!] I don't even know what that was don't even ask me. The final total came out to around $220 (ballpark). I mean if you ask me it's Italian food, none of it was seafood that we ordered, I get it they're going to charge more because of the type of food what it is So the average price of all of our dishes was around $27, but overall I was a bit surprised by the end result of the bill. The service was great don't get me wrong, Isabel I believe was her name she was great awesome server great customer service. All the food came out pretty quickly which was great it was hot I was happy with that. But we tried The restaurant we're not really in Winchester that too often but we were in the market to try something new. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.
Pretty good. The service was good and we got our table by reservation right away. Very friendly. The antipasto we got was really good, but make sure you ask for more bread if you need it (we didn't realize we could get more). I had a gnocchi special that was not amazing--gnocchi were fried, and thus sort of a chewy when gnocchi should really be soft and pillowy. Wine selection is good.
First time there, we were very impressed with the food. Last night not so much. Short ribs were undercooked and rabbit in the rabbit pasta bland. We may try again one more time hoping that this was a fluke. UPDATE: we again visited A Tavola and this time the food was as good as the first time!
Went for dinner outside; food was excellent and delivered quickly; very attentive runners, our server less so. Downgraded from 5 stars because seating in our wobbly chairs was not comfortable and we were squeezed in between two large parties at picnic tables.
We ordered some take out items: two pizza kits, a loaf of sourdough bread, and Bloody Mary mix. Lindsay was super helpful with the order and curbside pick-up was fast and safe. The Bloody Mary mix was one of the best I've ever had and very generous; we made about 5 drinks from it. The bread was absolutely delicious. The pizza kits used quality ingredients but a couple of things to consider if ordering: the pizza is an individual flatbread (Lindsay let me know this when ordering which helped in deciding how many we needed), the red sauce was absolutely delicious and had lots of garlic in it, and the amount of cheese they give you is on the smaller size, fresh mozzarella mixed in with parmesan (in line with a traditional Neapolitan pizza). They par-bake the flatbread and so it only took a few minutes to cook and it was delicious! I will definitely be ordering from here again; you can tell that they use quality ingredients and they were kind and helpful. So, looking forward to trying some of their entrees in the future.
Five star food, three star service. My wife's family is Italian and love to cook, and they wouldn't stop raving about the food afterwards. Service was slow and much of the staff seemed tipsy. Highly recommended, but be prepared for a long evening.
This place is mostly overpriced for what you get, but there are a select few things that are actuallly worth the price of admission. We got quite a few things here: The duck prosciutto appetizer The panko eggplant tower The rabbit pasta dish 3 temporary-menu Chef's special pasta dishes (I only ordered 2, but they brought an incorrect one, so I got 1 for free) The olive oil cake dessert Duck prosciutto - total ripoff. It tastes pretty good, but the laughably tiny amount of meat you get is insulting for the price. Panko Eggplant Tower - it's literally 3 slices of eggplant, lightly breaded, with tomato sauce and a very small portion of goat cheese. Not worth $12 Rabbit Pasta dish - this was a very pleasant surprise. It actually doesn't look very good when it comes out - looks like just a bunch of stuff thrown together. But it all combines together as quite delicious, and the rabbit meat was great. 3 various Chef's special pasta dishes (not on permanent menu) - all three chef's special pasta dishes that we ordered were overpriced, small portioned, and not interesting in taste. All disappointing. Extra Virgin Olive Oil Cake - This is one of the best desserts I've had all year. I didn't know what to expect in terms of how it would taste, but it's a two in one dessert really - they give you the olive oil cake, but also a scoop of equally delicious sour cherry frozen yogurt as a complementary side. There's also some potent pistachio cream garnish on the plate as well, and that's very heavily pistachio flavored - not watered down at all. Great dessert to close out the meal. All in all, only 2 out 7 dishes I felt were "worth it" - the rabbit pasta and the olive oil cake. If you do choose to go here, you must try the Olive Oil Cake. It's wonderful.
They are a very busy group and while the food is great, the service did suffer. I think they should listen to what people are saying and hire more staff. It's hard to make it in restaurants, so if you're doing something right ... serving good food ... you can give people a GREAT experience with great food and great service!
Pasta was $29 plus 3% plus tip. A bit pricey. Food was hot, but salty and well peppered. Antipasto 5 stars ***** We took half home. Service very good.
I ordered veggie pasta online which was $24. It was a dinner entree And was just surprised to see the quantity. The quantity was more like an appetizer with some oily mushrooms.🤔 So disappointed. 😔😑 And the mushrooms were undercooked.
Food was fairly good although portions on smaller side especially the fish. Main issue was when the check came there was a 4% charge for the kitchen help. It was explained that since the kitchen help didn’t receive tips that was added to make up for the disparity. I don’t feel clientele should have to subsidize the pay for the help due to a cheap owner. Better to add the 4% into the cost of the meal and pay your help a livable wage.
I was really hoping to not write a negative review, but really wanted to provide the feedback in person instead. Given that the manager, nor the chef made an appearance at the table after we explained what was wrong to the waiter, I am left with no other option but to write this review. There was six of us there for dinner tonight. Two ordered the pork chop that was severely undercooked. Two ordered the pasta carbonara. The black pepper in the carbonara was overwhelming to the point that it was the only thing you could taste. It's hard to mess up a carbonara. Lastly, thebolognese was stale. Something about the meat sauce wasn't right. We provided the feedback to the waiter very kindly and apologetically. In response he said "I don't care. I didn't cook it." We ended up getting one of the carbonaras comped. It was left on the table untouched. Wish they were a bit more attentive and responsive to feedback and offered a sincere apology for an abysmal dinner.
Used to get the burratta. It’s different now. Not even bread with it. $16 for this? Lower the price or do better
My View: Never, ever order take out from this restaurant. Antipasta terrible. Not provided with bread. Restaurant solution: offer to take bread off ticket. My solution. Reduce amount of charge by 20% tip and lose my patronage. The octopus was tough. I am throwing away the antipasta since no bread provided to properly enjoy. Service and quality of food have gone downhill in last year…….. as for atmosphere, tables were about 25% full when there 5/3/24 which may reflect declining service from full house formerly found there. This once was a great family restaurant.
