Opinions de Preserve Public House Winters
Food was excellent but portions were tiny. For instance my husband got the tortellini. We were shocked to see there were only five. Served in a very nice bowl of course, but five little tortellini in the bottom of this big bowl for an adult man? Beautiful atmosphere, quiet dining, and food well prepared. Made for a nice dining experience except for the portions.
Preserve is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The menu is always creative without being too overwhelming, the food is always fresh and prepared consistently, the service is great no matter how busy, and the attention to detail, specifically from Chef Gene Hall, truly makes the experience second to none.
Great place for something different and special in Winters. Excellent, attentive service. Great craft cocktails. Try the fried chicken or the Mac and cheese...very very tasty.
On our drive from Santa Rosa to the Sacramento Airport, we were passing through Winters, CA without really intending to stop and explore, but given we had extra time and the town looked cool we decided to explore the downtown area a bit. Instead of eating airport food, we read a few Google reviews and decided to check out Preserve. BINGO.....winner/winner/ chicken dinner. What a great treasure to stumble across. The staff were super attentive, customer focused and very knowledgeable. My wife ordered the Halibut, and it turned out amazing. I ordered the Risotto and added Scallops. Mine was also stellar beyond expectations. Their Risotto was perfectly cooked and adding the Scallops was the cherry on top. Our server also did a very good job in helping us to select the correct wine (my wife) and beer (me) to align with our food. Turns out, Winters (and Preserve) has now been added to our "Must Visit" location on our next trip to the area. It was well worth any effort to go visit this amazing town and dine at the Preserve. Hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
Love the decor! Sunday brunch was great and can’t wait to try it out for dinner. Staff were very welcoming and they were super nice with our toddler. The Rueben sandwich was some of the best that I’ve had and loved the onion aioli on the burger. They had plenty of seating both for inside and outside but still recommend reservations for peak times.
Stumbled upon the back bar at Preserve while staying in winters one night while on a road trip. The employees were friendly, especially the dark haired man and women with red hair that were behind the counter in the back. The menu is small but seems focused and the dishes I had were both good. Nice wine, beer and cocktail offerings as well. Lovely and relaxing atmosphere.
It’s been many years since I ate here. The atmosphere is great and some of the staff were very nice and friendly. The food was good. The halibut was served in miso along with the fingerling potatoes. While the flavors were nice it was sort of soup with the amount of broth is was sitting in. On the other hand the bavette was delicious and they served it with a lighter cook than the menu stated. I loved the dinner rolls but they ware presented as a special - dinner rolls as a special is a bit strange. Overall nice but some things that were curious, especially for the price. I’ll go back but be very selective and ask more questions about the menu.
We usually have had a great time here ... it has been our go-to anniversary and birthday celebrating spot. But the menu does not change much and the quality of the same meals has been dropping. Also, our last experience eating at the bar was poorly served by the bartender. She was friendly to some, not all, and not us. She got nicer when she gave us the bill ... but a fake smile at the end is not how a quality server aims for a tip.
Service was minimal and basic. Took forever to get drink refills despite being nearly empty restaurant. I had to go to the bar and get my own drink. Fried chicken was room temperature. Steak was awesome. Potatoes were not good. Salads were good. Service took it down a notch. No incentive to give good service when there’s a mandatory 20% tip for 6 or more.
Overpriced and not so great food. The staff was good and the manager comped the dinner and was very sorry for what was served. The burger was dry and not very well presented. I've had better 5 dollar burgers. Fries were extra! Look at that bun! The Caesar salad wasn't a true Ceasar. Some sort of strange variation. We ordered avocado as an extra on the salad and got 3 little chunks for 3 bucks. I had a burger there a couple years ago and it was quite good. Not sure what has happened to this place.
I gave it two stars because the waitress was friendly, but the food was overpriced. We ordered fish and chips, but the fish tasted a little fishy and didn't seem very fresh. The fries were pretty much like McDonald's fries. The crispy brussel sprouts were overcooked and sitting in an oily bowl, they were quite salty and greasy. The BBQ pork sandwich was just too sweet and not much meat. Unfortunately we left without finishing our food.
Missed the mark by a long shot. Service was on the slow side but okay. The restaurant has a nice look on the inside - seemingly nice atmosphere. The bar is close to all dinner seating areas and in our case the patrons at the bar were way beyond loud. They finally were escorted to their tables and I was now able to hear my wife who was seated right next to me. Our orders were finally taken after about 20 minutes with no water or anything at the table beforehand. I ordered the ribeye steak with brocolini (sp) and my wife the halibut with soup of the day. We also ordered a glass of wine each. It was a very long time before being served - we did have our wine to sip on as we waited. And our water glasses had finally been filled. Guessing another 35 minutes before being served. My steak was grilled as requested…medium. BUT, I was shocked at the amount of salt that had to have been used. All I could taste was SALT. The broccolini served on a separate plate - SALT. I am a fan of salt but my dinner was terrible. My wife’s halibut - browned and crusty on the top and served with tiny potatoes. Her halibut was flaky but dry. It was a nice filet but not what one would/should expect. This was our first experience with Preserve and we will likely not be going back. Many individuals who have eaten at this restaurant rave about the food - sure wish we could have had that experience. Side Note: chipped dinner plate should be taken out of service no salt or pepper on the table (sure didn’t need any salt), bread should be made part of the meal $9.00 for three rolls is way too much. I am not in a practice of writing such a review. Hopeful that others do not have a shared experience.
We either stop in or order out every few months to see if Preserve has reverted back to the old restaurant we used to love. But unfortunately we are disappointed every time. Servings are consistently small. Food is underwhelming. Just had the worst Caesar salad I’ve ever consumed, not sure how you mess that one up. Preserve is gorgeous and we love the staff, however the food has been lacking.
This started as a good experience with friendly service. My brother-in-law and I were at the bar waiting for our family to finish shopping. The drinks were delicious, however, when our family came in to meet us the staff at the door denied them and said they were too busy to accommodate them. They said they needed reservations in an aggressive manner. The area was clearly not busy and gave an unwanted feeling. It seems like there were some inconsistent directions depending on the staff. It seemed like it would of been a good dining experience. Hopefully there was a misunderstanding and this is not the norm
Have been coming to Preserve for a long time now and over the last several months the food quality and care has been declining. We have returned several times over the last months and each time the food quality declines. Someone bringing the food to your table at this high priced restaurant and asking you who had what it not professional. If you cannot take a minute to read a ticket as a food runner you are doing a poor job. Knowing who had what is simply erving 101. Today the mac and cheese was generally ok, it was very greasy, the chicken sandwich was over fried, almost blackened as you would with blakended dish, the fries were so overly salted that they were not edible, the steak friet ordered medium was very well done on the ends and rare almost raw in the middle, the steak was cut not as one would cut a steak friet for plating but cut as if someone was checking the level of doneness. We left almost all the food on the plates that were taken away by the server. The server never asked if there was something wrong, only took the plates away. We brought the quality of the meal to the attention of the server and were told that they would let the kitchen know. $100 plus tip for a lunch that should have never been left the kitchen to begin with. It is just wrong on so many levels. To charge the prices they charge for the poor quality food we were served today and have been served over the last few months along with the staff's lack of interest is just outright insulting Something is seriously wrong at Preserve. It seems that no one is paying attention to what is going on at this restaurant lately. I hope they can figure it out before they loose more loyal customers.
