Had a wait while downtown, needed to boost my blood sugar a little bit, and had this on my "want to go" list. Very atmospheric, decent prices. There was a lot of people in the open seating so I wound up ducking into the little reading nook at the back and it was very cozy and awesome. Would definitely revisit. Would recommend standing and waiting for your order because nobody's calling anything out.

A real fixture in downtown Abilene that hasn't let their loyal following and steady business go to their heads. This place has a friendly and warm staff to go with the nice vibe of the old building that makes everyone feel welcome. They brew very good coffee and it is always done to perfection and served exactly as asked for. If you appreciate a really good coffee hang out this is definitely a place you need to check out.

I've been coming here a lot more recently due to starting some school, and I've always loved this place. Great coffee, great service, and a great place to study and relax! Highly recommend, even if you aren't doing school/studying, you should come by and enjoy the atmosphere, especially on open mic nights on Thursdays!

This place is awesome. Coffee is great. The staff are very kind and helpful. Highly recommend this place

The chai Latte and the cinnamon roll were great. Also loved the local art throughout the building.

This is by far my favorite coffee shop in town. The atmosphere is amazing, the staff if incredibly personable, friendly, and try to connect with their regular customers. Plus, the price is much better than anywhere else in town.

C
Conner Crawford

They have great coffee and rotating monthly drinks for those wanting to try different combinations. For non-coffee drinkers, they offer a wonderfully diverse selection of Italian sodas and teas. Service is friendly, and the atmosphere is as relaxing and comfortable as you could want from any coffee shop. I love bringing a book to relax, and I frequently run into people I know as well.

We don’t visit Abilene without a visit. Kids love the blueberry lemonade (seasonal) but also just a lovely place to chill.

Love this place. Out of all the coffee shops in town this is the best one by far. So many flavor options and multiple variety of drinks. AND it tastes perfect every time. I have never had a bad experience here. 100% recommend.

M
Meghan Alexander

Such a cute little coffee shop. It reminds me of one back home so that was nice. The random chairs is always enjoyable but slightly better taken care of ones would be preferred. However I appreciated one the guys behind the counter, he helped with my dairy concerns and the James Joyce he suggested was soooo good. Definitely will have to stop in for one again

A super little gem in downtown Abilene! Great coffees, kind and knowledgeable baristas, and a great environment to sit and relax. With a park next door (with a water feature), it makes a nice spring or fall hangout with friends.

R
Rob Fab

I've been here before but it had been a while. I went with the classic Strawberry Shake. It was great. The barista was super nice and helpful. Atmosphere is chill and relaxing. You can dine in and zen out, or you can dine out, and chill by the downtown waterfall, and watch the cars go by. Solid spot for sure! Edit: On Sundays, they are super busy, due to them being the only coffee shop open on Sundays. Depending on when you go, it could be calm and serene, or it could be noisy, so just keep that in mind. Also, it can get a little hot or stuffy sometimes. I don't know if this an AC thing or just a fan thing but yeah. Overall though, def a highlight of the Lene.

Great quirky local coffee shop. Great place to meet up with friends, study session, or grab a warm beverage to go.

R

Best coffee shop in town, hands down. It's right in the middle of downtown Abilene, and has a great local flair. A little hipster in their signage, but look at the clientele. It is a college area, so it is normally pretty busy. You may have to wait a minute to get your order in, but it is worth it.

R
Rebecca Massey

My husband and I stopped in because it was rainy and coffee sounded yummy! This coffee shop is very welcoming and comfortable. Well, I can't have Dairy so I'm always so unsure of what to order. The gentleman working recommended a London fog after asking a few questions to see what I liked. I normally don't like earl grey tea but my goodness the London fog with soy is delicious! And the husband rates his peppermint mocha a 9, it's not layered in gold and didn't pay for itself so it can't be a 10 but damn it's a good cup of coffee.

such a cool place with a unique atmosphere. great staff and their coffee tasted great, was way cheaper than other places, and came out fast!

Superb customer service and amazing coffee, these folks know how to make you feel like family. The owner is very warm and friendly and greeted me with a smile. I will never go to Starbucks again, Monks is a can't miss. Officially my first stop every morning from now on. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!

Best joint in Abilene to grab a latte. Staff knows their stuff and honors the craft. Pickup and run or stick around and soak up the ambiance, but definitely stop in!

I got a Spiced Brown Sugar Latte with oat milk. It was so delicious. I'm just visiting but this is a definite stop I'd make again

Every single person employee is engaging & sweet. I have to draw a small comparison to starbucks.. where I usually get a negative attitude- here at Monks I get positive feedback! I never been knowledgeable of coffee, and the staff has helped me order many times. I love everything about this place, and hope as time passes, the quality of life here is timeless. Thank You for bringing me a sense of community & welcome. Tmi: Brought me out of a rough headspace, grateful for My favorite coffee shop ~ Anthony

We stopped in here to grab a coffee and play some cards. We loved that there were all different types of seating. Some people were there watching videos, others were studying, and some were socializing. Great mix of people. We had a mocha and royal breve and both were excellent. We really loved seeing all the cups that had been drawn on by customers and employees behind the counter.

C

The espresso here was sooooo good and I admit to being a coffee snob and it was very good. Whenever I am traveling through Abilene you will find me here! Service was very friendly, speedy and they have several sugar free flavor syrups to choose from. Very impressed! Thank you Monks staff!

I stopped in this weekend while visiting Abilene. The coffee was some of the best I’ve had! I had the latte with sugar free syrups. The sugar free options were limited, but I’m glad that they at least had these. Overall, the coffee was great

S
Starr Neff

They have the best coffee here! They are super nice and my go to! I love the mocha with lavender, or the royal breve with lavender. Their blended drinks tend to be more sweet, which I enjoy a lot! I also love their blackberry lime scone. Typically their treats are always good, but ofc sometimes depends on the time of day. Overall, I love monks!!

M
M. Leondard

I've tried every cafe in town, and Monks is still my favorite. The quality is extremely consistent. While other cafes may be good, their quality wavers depending on the barista or the flavor. But at Monks, I know they will always nail my order regardless. They must have their brewing down to a science.

Absolutely love Monk’s! One of the best coffee shops in Abilene. They never disappoint. The staff are always kind and helpful. Anytime an order is not right, that are eager to make it right! 10/10!!!

M
Marisa Gardea

Very friendly staff that makes you feel welcome! They have amazing coffee and I love their scones! The prices are (imo) lower than chain coffee shops, and I love the atmosphere and little reading room they have. Only downside is the seating, they have a lot of tables, but most of them are for 3 or more people, they don’t have a little bar area or seats/tables for one. The parking is also a little annoying, but that’s because they’re located by other stores/businesses. Overall I would definitely recommend trying this place!

N

The best coffee spot I have ever been to, I live in Arlington but me and my girlfriend sometimes come all the way to Abilene for a date just to get some of this amazing coffee, I recommend the iced white mocha with caramel :)

I love Monks, the coffee shop in Abilene, Texas! It's a neat and hip little spot that quickly became my go-to for a perfect cup of Bancha. The name "Monks" adds a unique and intriguing vibe to the place, which I appreciate. I've spent some fun times there with friends, and it's definitely one of the cooler places to hang out in Abilene. Whether you're a tea lover or just looking for a trendy coffee shop, Monks is a must-visit.

I have absolutely adored this place for well over a decade. They have a knack for creating an environment. It’s so cozy and comfortable, the lighting and couches and intimate nature is incredible. The staff are so friendly and seem happy to be there and I’m most definitely always happy to be there. GREAT coffee/tea as well, of course. Big fan here!

I have been going to Starbucks for a long time now. Hands-down I am willing to drive to the one location in town to have monks Coffee over Starbucks. I got a hot caramel macchiato today and it was one of the best drinks I think I’ve ever had! Anyone who hasn’t tried should try monks support your local small business and you will be so happy you did☺️ not to mention, it was about three dollars cheaper

M

Great customer service. Always smiling when I go in there. Great coffee! Very fast, never have to wait Very long at all! I would Highly recommend this place!

K
Krista Pruske

Love this coffee shop! My husband and I come here when we're out of coffee at home and we have never been let down. The girls are always super sweet and personable, the coffee is always made to brighten your day, and you don't run into crazy long lines like at Starbucks. There is a cozy seating area inside, however with the pandemic we like to sit outside by the water feature. We highly recommend Monks for their customer service, pricing, and overall great quality coffee and beverages.

This is my new little favorite coffee shop located in downtown Abilene with the park conveniently located next door check out their new spring drinks. I have two lavender coconut Italian cream soda it was delicious and extremely relaxing. Also I love the vibe that the girls that barista they are get to pick their soundtrack. Today was smashing pumpkins 👍👍

B

It's really rare that I go into a business and feel the care that has been put into the business, but also the community. Art on the walls is provided by local artists and they host an open mic night where musicians can play music they want. It feels comfortable and welcoming with eclectic decor featuring a variety of couches and puffy chairs. The coffee is high quality, not very expensive and made to order. It was a nice find in a downtown area that feels neglected.

W

Great atmosphere with plenty of indoor seating as well as a couple tables in front and a city sitting area next door

D

What an outstanding coffee shop in Abilene. I've tried several and the this one, hands down, is the cats meow! The staff was amazing and friendly. I was in a bit of a hurry and they got me in and out. Now the blueberry muffin wasn't my favorite. It was denser than I like, still had great flavor tho. If you are local or staying downtown at the Doubletree it is worth the walk over to the shop.

C
Christopher Saint Germain

Monks is the best place in Abilene to get Hand-Crafted coffee. The atmosphere is perfect, from friendly staff to indoor and outdoor seating. They are also conveniently located in Original Town North, near the T&P Station, where you can safely cross under the tracks to get to Original Town South. Entertainment and shopping are steps away from Monks and they have become a staple of Abilene culture.

Great place! We’re moving to Abilene in a few weeks and decided to check out this place while we were here and I can definitely say we’ll be back again! :) The vibe of the place was very laid back and welcoming. I asked one of the baristas (Ryder) to make me a surprise drink and it was amazing!! If you like spices in your coffee, i definitely recommend this one. He said a few of the ingredients were chai, cinnamon and oatmilk. 10/10!

K

Super cute little coffee shop. Very reasonable prices, cheaper than Starbucks (and tastes better). Lots of different seating options. Perfect for relaxing alone or with friends. Plus offers military discounts and bottomless beverage options.

Just happened to stop by on a road trip and this was one of the best coffee shops I’ve ever been to (I’ve been to a lot). The atmosphere was really chill and comfortable, there were a lot of flavor options, and my latte was incredibly good. They made a mistake with my drink but when I told them they apologized and fixed it immediately. The prices are also more reasonable than a lot of coffee shops these days. I’m almost considering going a little out of my ways to stop by again on the way home.

Favorite coffee shop in Abilene. 🖤 everyone is so friendly and happy, atmosphere is a mix of a cozy library and serene coffee shop vibe. Our coffee has always been superb no matter what we order. Can't say enough good things about it!

Such a cozy place to catch up with friends, the lil back room is intimate enough to have some deep conversations. Coffee is custom made and they really add some love to it.

Great atmosphere, great coffee. The scones are massive and delicious. I got the cheddar chive- it tasted like an elevated version of Red Lobsters cheddar bay biscuits. Prices are really reasonable. Amazing little hang out spot.

I usually go to big country when I’m in Abilene, but they were closed for New Year’s Day and I’m so glad!! My boyfriend and I stopped in and the barista was so friendly and extremely inviting. He made sure that we both enjoyed our drinks and I bought some espresso to take home that was 👌🏽 💯 🤤 Hands down best small business experience I’ve encountered in Abilene to date. Looking for delicious coffee, friendly faces and a little small talk? Head over to monks!

Good coffee in a groovy atmosphere. Daughter had a mango smoothy, I had an iced mocha (yum) and hubby had some sort of frappuccino. I haven't found a place that makes an iced mocha anywhere close to as good as this one was. Might have to drive back to Abilene to get another one.

Monks Coffee Shop is the perfect spot to relax and enjoy a great cup of coffee in downtown! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, making it a great place to work, catch up with friends, or just unwind. The coffee is always fresh and expertly made, with plenty of options to choose from. Their pastries and snacks are a nice bonus, and the staff is always friendly and attentive. Monks truly captures the charm of a local coffee shop, and it’s a must-visit if you’re in the area!

I hardly give 5 stars but Monks definitely deserves it! I'm a huge coffee drinker and I just can't find a good Dirty Chai anywhere, except here! I've tried multiple places in Dallas area and Austin and none has ever compared to Monks. Hands down the best coffee place in Abilene.

I work downtown and have been a regular here for awhile. My husband often wondered why I didn’t just make my coffee at home, and after trying Monks, he finally understood! LOL. The team at Monks is always so friendly and quick to greet me, making every visit a pleasure. The other day, I walked in and saw the manager or owner (not sure which) training a new employee. It was clear how much she cared — she took the time and paid attention to every detail to ensure the new employee had the support she needed. I really appreciate the quality and consistency I get from Monks. Even though different people make my drinks, they always taste the same, which I truly value — unlike many coffee shops where the same order can taste different each time. I usually get the iced dirty chai with a Cubano shot and oat milk. As a chai "snob," I can confidently say they have the best chai in town. Thank you for fueling my mornings and always making my day a little easier!

So great I went 2x on my day in Abilene! Cozy atmosphere with a variety of seating and cozy nooks to choose from. Love the local artwork and style. No food but friendly staff and great value for excellent drinks.

The coffee folks (baristas?) were incredibly nice and helpful. Went with a tuxedo cold brew and it was perfect with my scone. They even had a recommendation for the scone flavor that would go best with my drink. Quiet and non-intrusive atmosphere. Next time I'm in town this will be my coffee spot.

When you think of a cozy coffee shop in your minds eye, there can be no better real world representation than Monks. A local small business, it is the perfect place to caffinate any time of day without paying big corporations or big corpo coffee shop prices. The staff is always kind and cheerful, I've never had an unpleasant encounter in the 3 years I've come here. Highly recommend, this is THE BEST coffee shop in Abilene no contest.

Monk’s has been around for a long time, but the new owner has made some excellent changes! The atmosphere feels more modern, they have a few more options on drinks and snacks, and in my opinion even better coffee. The only thing that hasn’t changed is the friendly staff and great service. One of my favorite places downtown.

Great coffee shop!! Loved the atmosphere, there were several spots for more than 4 people. The baristas were very polite and helpful. Even though they were busy, they did not make us feel like we were wasting their time. There were 5 in our group and none of us had been here before, so we had questions about the different drinks. They were patient and friendly. We ordered different drinks and a couple of us even ordered "surprise me" drinks, which is a random drink that the barista makes for you. They were fun, and really good. Not super expensive and really good coffee. I'm looking forward to going back.

An amazing place. I really liked this place. Upon arrival, the atmosphere was very calm, very clean, and well-decorated. There were people of all ages, from children to seniors, enjoying themselves with their families. There were also students with their computers and some young people who went to hang out. The place has good music, and one of the few I've been to that featured Arctic Monkeys, so if you like the band, this is a good place. When I ordered coffee, the employees were very friendly and patient. The wait time wasn't long, and the coffee was quite delicious. An excellent place that you have to go to if you visit or live in Abilene.

Staff is friendly skilled and remembers you! They make my amazing double-barrel dirty chai latte on the rocks perfectly; which isn't even on their menu They do what they can to keep the transient community from harassing customers outside their shop and even mentioned contacting the city to fix the filter in the waterfall that's right next to their place. If you're wanting to chill in an air conditioned lounge and drink some coffee or play chess this is the place to go in downtown Abilene

This coffee shop is absolutely my favorite! The atmosphere is calming, making it a perfect spot to work or study. There's ample seating and plenty of outlets, which is very convenient. I've also enjoyed playing many card games with friends here. The baristas are fantastic and always great to chat with. If anyone needs to cater coffee for their events, Monks is an excellent choice. I've used their catering service before, and everyone was thrilled because I chose Monks. My go-to drink is the Tuxedo Mocha, and it never disappoints. Overall, it's a fantastic coffee shop with wonderful baristas and a great vibe. I would rate it 10 out of 10 as the best coffee shop in Abilene.

Great food. Great service. Had strawberry and lemon poppy, scone and tea and coffee. The kids had smoothie and lemonade. This coffee shop is close proximity to several of the museums like the 12th armored division and the Grace museum. So nice to tour around downtown. It's practically across the street from the Paramount.

Great little coffee shop! Staff was amazing! The coffee, oh the coffee!! This was my first time there, and it was amazing. I had the tuxedo mocha, I'm not sure what was in it, but lemme tell ya, it's now one of my favorite morning drinks. Definitely worth the stop if in the area, heck it's worth the drive even if you aren't.

What a quaint artsy coffee shop which has a lot of personality, friendly service, wonderful ambience and of course, great coffee. It's in the heart of downtown so it's a wonderful place to go and hang out but then walk around to enjoy the downtown charm of Abilene. In addition to having great coffee, they also have delicious smoothies and unique and wonderful selections of tea. I love the decor with great art from local artists and has a relaxing vibe to the place that makes you want to just hang out with friends and family and enjoy your time together. The service is personalized and they really want to help you find just the right coffee and tea and are highly accommodating with food intolerances. Would highly recommend this coffee shop.

Cute coffee shop right in downtown Abilene, Texas. Convenient to shopping, museums and attractions. Situated next to a beautiful green space with water feature. Visited early afternoon on 4/24/21. Staff was friendly and our order was processed quickly and correctly. Cute decor- don’t miss the take one/leave one library above the faux fireplace. Don’t pass by this gem!

Although I was only in town briefly, I would definitely make this my hang on the long term. Get your espresso served with a smile and have some great convo to go along with it. A great space for meeting friends, and there's even a space in the back for more intimate conversations. Longer hours on the weekend make it a great alternative.

G

The atmosphere was really nice and cozy and the customer service was super awesome! When my mom order her drink there was a miscommunication and they fixed it without hesitation. They even have alternative milk options and added pumps of hazelnut syrup to my iced white chocolate mocha! They only thing that makes my review 4 stars instead of 5 is that my drink wasn't good; either it was too much milk or not enough flavor, I don't know. But I definitely recommend going there!

Best coffee in Abilene. They do go hard on the sugar though, so if your family has a history of diabetes say goodbye to your kidneys. I'd label it the quintessential Abilene coffee shop, capturing the small town, old time, homey feel--with a dash of quirkiness and class. The baristas have some of the best service for a coffee shop, an inclusive, welcoming space.

Best Coffee Shop in Town. I’ve been Goin here ever since I was a Freshmen in High School, and this place is just AMAZING! Super chill Staff, Beautiful Atmosphere, Cool Music, and some really nice paintings from the Fine Arts Museum right across the Street. I’m always glad to come in and get a nice green tea smoothie on nice warm days and even hot coco w/ a brownie on Cold Days, too. Hands down the coolest café in the City.

The service is excellent. I would give it 5 stars if they didn't use Walmart's Great Value milk. The espresso drinks are perfect. But when I pulled up, there were some addicts sitting at the tables in front of the store. Didn't feel very safe or welcoming. But once inside, all was great. Not put off enough to never go back. I'm from a huge city so I'm used to all types of different people everywhere. But still not comfortable having to squeeze between sketch people to get inside a coffee shop.

Always great service, decent amount of seating options, not crazy loud but does get busy. Not a huge food menu but what they do have is delicious. They don't offer coconut milk; I think they had oat milk or almond milk for their alternative milk. Orders are usually very fast as well. It's next to a restaurant/diner of sorts if you decide you're hungry enough for a full meal. Definitely a worthwhile spot in old downtown Abilene.

I enjoy going downtown for a quick cup of coffee to brighten my day. On rare occasions, I bring my service dog with me, especially when I’m having a challenging day. My dog does not wear a vest indicating she’s a service animal, but I’m always prepared to answer questions if needed. Today, when I entered, I was immediately met with, “Sorry, this is going to be really awkward, but we only allow service animals in our building.” I was not asked any clarifying questions, such as “Is your dog a service animal required because of a disability?” or “What work or task has the dog been trained to perform?” I’m not upset, but I was taken aback and saddened by the approach. A simple, respectful question would have sufficed and avoided the awkwardness. I hope this feedback encourages more thoughtful interactions in the future, as it’s important to balance enforcing policies with ensuring customers feel respected and understood.

This was a very cute local coffee shop. We came at 8pm and there was still a solid crowd. There was a cute authentic feel to it and they seem to have monthly flavors and all of the regular coffees as well. There is plenty of seating. This is probably a good study or social spot for students.

Monks has good coffee for more reasonable pricing than competitors. I believe the ingredients are higher quality as well. These are the main reasons I choose them. IMO they have the best tasting coffee/drinks in Abilene. That said, drinks can be inconsistent depending on who is making them and that really wouldnt be a huge deal if the girls behind the counter didn't get SO defensive and make it one. They always insist the reason the drink was off was bc of something the customer did as though its not possible they could've made a mistake. Twice now, they've insisted I said something I know I didn't on different kinds of drinks. Ive had to ask for maybe... six re makes in the last two YEARS and I go three or four times a month. This is not because they dont make more mistakes than that, these are just the times the drink was bad enough it couldn't be drank. I have no idea why the girls make SUCH a big deal over something that happens so seldom and look to blame someone. The guys don't argue, make snarky comments they think you can't hear, LIE, or make ugly facial expressions. The attitudes are a BIG turn off. Also, there is a good amount of seating, but the furniture is gross. The couches look disgusting and are in dire need of replacement.

I ordered a lg oat milk latte coffee and they poured me a medium. Went back up and then kindly poured the other 2oz. Very friendly… but it tasted like hot flavored coffee water.

Two stars because the coffee I got was good, but the wait and service wasn’t. I was excited to try a different environment but walked in and stood at the counter with no acknowledgement by anyone and then when they were ready to take my order, just looked at me 😅 waited a while for one iced drink as well. Kids running all over so not a good place to relax. If I go back it’s because the coffee was good but I’ll be trying others for now.

We came to get an evening drink based on the great reviews, but were sorely disappointed. We had to wait a long time to order even though only one person was in front of us. Then the barista was not very friendly and didn't apologize for the wait. My hot chocolate was fine but my wife's chai had clumps of powder and tasted bad. The atmosphere looks like a nice place to hang out, but we don't plan to come back.

Went to stop by to see what’s change with new owners. All the art is gone 🥲! It’s sad to see all the walls bare and it looking so empty. Monks used to be a go to spot but now it just feels uninviting.

So the coffee was decent, good price, but that was it's downfall. They charged me for my drink as usual, but not the tip. (Why should I be pressured into tipping anyway? They already get paid by the hour to do their job.) Anyways, after me and my buddy left, I went to buy lunch and coincidentally it was pretty much the exact amount I had on my card. So fast forward to ONE IN THE MORNING, and it charges my card the $2 I tipped the lady. Why didn't it charge me that when I was there?? It could be their computer thingy and they can't fix it but like that's not something that should be happening. The coffee was good, nothing special. It's more of a place you'd go to sit and get work done or something. Not somewhere you'd go just for coffee. So yeah, screw you Monk's Coffee and America's tipping culture

I ordered a medium cold brew and it was disappointing. I got a cup that was packed full of ice and there was only a small amount of coffee. I never have this problem at Statesman coffee or Starbucks. This is the classic ice scam. Fill the cup with ice and provide only a small amount of drink. Shouldn’t you get at least half a cup of coffee if when you order a cup of coffee? Shame. Next time I need ice, I will stop by, but no longer for coffee.
