I went through the drive through and ordered a chicken quesadilla and a California burrito. Both were very very good. I wish I would have known about this place sooner. Lots of food per order. Staff was very nice.
Outstanding food! Fresh & flavorful, large portions, and very friendly staff. The Pollo Hawaiian was amazing and their salsa is possibly the best I’ve ever had- inexpensive prices and great food
People friendly, they were happy to serve good flavored food.. I ordered Salmon and the next day fajita trio, the chef went with us to make sure everything was okay 🙏. Plates were less than 20 dollars.
Most excellent food and the workers were amazing. We eat out a lot and have small children and the workers did not act bothered with the kids like a lot of places do. They actually played with the kids and even gave them candy when they were through eating. Anytime one of the workers walked past the table they acknowledged us and even gave the kids high fives and fist bumps and just kept talking to them. The food was very flavorful. The best place in Abilene to eat Mexican. They have Homemade tortillas (corn and flour).
We tried Mexico Viejo tonight. We had gone a while back and were not impressed, but they have really turned things around! Donna served us tonight and made our experience fantastic. Her recommendations were great and her personality was even better. We had the Pina Hawaii and the Avocado Salad with chicken. The food came out fresh and hot. The flavor was really good, and our drinks stayed full throughout the night. We will be going back soon to try other things.
we we're very disappointed with the food today. We ordered the fajita dinner. beef, chicken and shrimp. We got our order and got home only to find just two pieces of shrimp, we weren't going to drive back over a few shrimps but, it is kind of bad that you want a price and short the carry out food. We enjoy the restaurant and the service but, will definitely check it before we leave
The food here was good, the drive thru does not work so don’t pull up, even though there is a menu. You will be waiting. They serve drinks if you like, and they have a knowledgeable staff. The guy at the bar helped us and we ordered takeout, he was very friendly and made sure we were comfortable while we waited. It was a simple restaurant and cute. We ordered fajitas and birria tacos.
1st time at this Mexican restaurant. The food wasn't that good. I had a steak burrito. It had way too much beans that it over powered the other flavors from the rice, guac and meat.
I really wanted to rate Mexico Viejo higher, but I just could not. Really, a 2.5 star rating would be best at slightly below average. First off, the good. The margaritas are strong and go down smooth. The skillet queso fundido with chorizo had amazing flavor and was bubbling when it came out. The tortillas were a little thicker than you usually get in West Texas. It's more of a southern tex-mex tortilla, which I actually enjoy better if it's a good tortilla, and these were. The tortilla held up well and had a nice chew factor (do not confuse this with chewy). The tamales were obviously homemade and tasty, and the green sauce on top was also really good and flavorful. The beans were also very good with a different spice combination than you normally see in West Texas. Next up the Ok??? I ordered a combo plate with a taco, burrito, and tamale. The crispy taco had a weird, almost minty flavor to the taco shell, but the actual taco meat was delicious, and veggies were nice and crisp. The other, "huh? Why? " was my burrito. As you can see, it looks more like a soft taco. Maybe this is the way they do burritos, and if it is, I'll know for the future. The salsa was also different, and I'm still undecided on if I liked it or not. Now the bad. My biggest pet peeve is charges on card transactions. Especially when the charge is not clearly displayed. Be aware there is a 4% charge for any card used. My problem with this charge is that it assumes there are no charges to take cash. This, however, is not true as you need to have a trusted employee count and deposit the cash at the bank by hand. This takes time IE labor costs. Additionally, there are operational costs in running the risk of incorrect change being given, employees skimming money out of the till, or the risk of counterfeit bills. All of these are "hidden" costs to doing business in cash over cards. However, business owners only view the transaction fees from card vendors, so it is easier to assume there are no costs with cash. This also factored into the rating I gave.
Stopped by to grab some take home, we had a sick grandson with us and didn't want to spread any germs. We were under the impression that this restaurant was in the same category as Chipotle's, Panera's, and Mooyah's Burgers. It's not a fast food place like Taco Bell, but not an Abuelos where you spend $20 on one person per plate or more, but it was, dang close enough! They did renovate the old Jack in the Box, but didn't expand the building, and no advertising for grand opening and VERY VERY SMALL DINING so going in we had no clue it was an "upper priced" place. Boy, were we wrong! Had to wait to be seated. They had a bar except no service there. When we asked if we could just order for takeout, our waitress didn't seem to be happy. We ordered, and 4 other tables came in at the same time or or up to 10 minutes after. They all were served, and two were completely finished before we received ours. Nothing we received needed the 40 minutes we waited to get our food. We had already paid out, so we just set at a table with not even an offer of a glass of water!!! I, at first, order one of the specials. One taco, one enchilada, and one tamale. This is my favorite combination type/mix of Tex-Mex. Well, they had no tamales. So I asked for the taco and 2 enchiladas. My taco shell was so hard I just emptied the contents on my plate and trashed the shell, refried beans were some of the best I have ever had, beef enchiladas were ok, the rice was almost tasteless for $12.99 not worth that price!!! Have had much better for much less. Hubbies had the 4 Barrita tacos (street size) with 1/2 cup of pinto beans, and that was $14.99. He said they had good flavor, but we would not be back to eat there. I can get higher quality, flavor, and quantity at Oscar's or Casa Herrera. Now, Scott's kid's burger was the size of an adult one except he never received his drink. With our take-out and the price, you would think that we would have received chips and hot sauce. NOPE What makes me angry is that they are passing on the fees, to their customers, that the banks are charging them for certain types of accounts/certain types of payments/general business fees. It's like charging a customer for a glass of water, eating utensils, napkins, or the dinner wear you're using to dine on.
On Saturday 2/16/26 before or around 4:30pm It was my first time here after a long day from work only to be greeted by a very rude older lady who seemed to hate her job. When asked what she recommended she said in Spanish and I quote, (pos todo pero usted sabe). So I just ordered some street tacos. After I saw another young waitress dressed in black bring a nice looking plate to another lady, I got up and asked the person on that table what she ordered. The younger lady was nice and smiled and told me about the pineapple plate so I got it to go. After I finished eating, the older lady brought my order which was to go and never even told me it was my bag or even charged me so I had to ask the other waitress. No good customer service whatsoever from that older lady. I will not be returning here again. The younger lady did tell me thank you and to have a nice day. Wish she would have been my waitress honestly. It would have made a difference.
I've given this place a few chances because I live around the corner and love the idea of a nearby Mexican place to sit on the patio and have some drinks, but each time it's been an incredible disappointment. Burnt chimichangas, little meat, and way over priced relative to other places in town. Would never recommend this place
Stopped by here on my way through cause I wanted Mexican food. Menu looked good.... but biy was I mistaken. Water was great... my appetizer the special dip which I got after I got my meal was horrible!!! Bland no flavor or seasoning. To ruin such great cheese like that is sad.... which comes to my dinner Toxic Carnitas... they were greasy since it came with jalapeños and onions I thought they would be grilled and mixed in with the meat but they weren't. Just thrown on top and then covered in the same bland cheese dip. The meat in the special dip or the carnival once again bland. Have they not heard of salt and pepper.... this is a Mexican Restaurant... we pride our food on greasy flavor but not the case here. I would have been better off eating at Taco Bell and saved some money!!! Server never checked on me didn't even ask why I didn't eat my food and why I left it. I will not be back because the food was that bad. Not even worth a second chance.
Service poor and family got food poisoning We stopped by for a “quick dinner” to take a break. Waited over 45 minutes after ordering for our food, which I could best describe as mediocre, over cooked, Tex Mex that is overpriced. Looked old and reheated so unsure how it possibly took so long. Service was so incredibly slow, seemed annoyed by our presence. Took another 15 minutes to get our check just so we could leave. There were only 2 other tables so it wasn’t packed by any means. The owners were sitting at a table eating and didn’t seem interested in helping service move any quicker. But the biggest issue is that two of us got food poisoning! Seemed to be from the horchata. This was the only time they ate the same thing and the timing lines up so it wasn’t packed definitely this location. Based on the lack of cleanliness, it checks out. Wouldn’t recommend. Also, as a note, they do charge a fee to use a card.
Poor Poor Service and Food!!! First of all, we went for a date night and wanted to sit on the patio. I asked if they could turn on the fireplace mounted in the wall and the the TV’s that were mounted but covered up. The waitress told me she would ask and then came and said they weren’t working. Another waitress ended up coming up, older but would not speak English to me so I tried to communicate in my not so perfect Spanish. First I asked for the mixed drink menu and an aqua con limon. She never brought me the water but brought my husband his drink. When she brought the menus, I pointed to the mixed drink and she was attempting to read it back to me as if I had to tell her the ingredients that were shown on the menu. That was the first issue, when I finally got my Mexican Candy $9 drink, it didn’t even have Tajin on the rim and I still never received my water with lemon. Mind you, they were dead and we were the only customers. When asked to order, still in spanish, my husband ordered the fajitas. I had a coupon from a booklet I bought from my nieces’ fundraiser. It states buy one entree get one free with purchase of 2 drinks (excluding fajitas, seafood or chile rellono). I tried to explain to the older lady waitress that I wanted 2 sour cream enchilada plates with no bean but double rice. She took the menu from me and told me I could only use the combination plates for the coupon. She grew upset when I tried to explain to her the fine print on the coupon. She ended up getting a man to come and ask what’s the problem. I explained and he said it was fine. As we waited, the mosquitos were terrible so we went inside. I still have no water as I asked for. He tells us we cannot sit at the table to watch the tv and had to sit right against the wall because they had limited seating. There was one other couple in the restaurant. My husband got his fajitas and they look nothing like the video from the previous review. Not steaming, just on a plate. My enchilada plates were soaked in salt, I am sire purposely, that I couldn’t even eat it. Do yourself a favor and don’t go here. I didn’t even get the double rice and never got a water. They even had the audacity to charge for both plates of sour cream enchiladas and keep the coupon. Their food was very small portioned, our bill was almost $80.
Mexico Viejo Why do people lie in their reviews? I do not know. Some people want to help businesses by saying nice things or exaggerating their experiences. Perhaps they think they are helping the employees or the economy. But what about the customer that relies on reviews to visit a restaurant? I read several great reviews and decided to visit Mexico Viejo. I was deceived. We arrived at 4 pm, and there were only two other tables with customers. One of those tables was already done with their food, and their plates and empty beer bottles were everywhere. Our first impression was that this was a messy place with dirty and sticky tables. The waiters watched the movie "Cars" from a corner table while swapping their phones. The beans, rice, and pico de gallo came right away, and two things happened: One, I burnt my hand since the plate, I assume, was put into the salamander, and I was not informed. Second, we realized the pico de gallo was old; maybe that is intentional to honor the restaurant's name: Viejo. We order the molcajete. That was the first time I saw beef, shrimp, and chicken mixed with chorizo and cheese. The combination is mouthwatering and delicious but greasy and unhealthy. I wish I had known about the mixture before; that is my fault for not asking. Our meat was burnt, as shown in the picture, and soaked in grease. Our waitress was the only one serving the tables while the others continued sitting at the corner table, watching the movie and their cellphones. Based on this experience, I would not recommend this place, and I have zero plans to return. The people lying in their reviews have created a monster!
