Great coffee and vibes. They made the coffee in front of me and just before most places would serve the coffee, they asked me to take a sip and recommend any changes to the drink. Their service is fantastic and the atmosphere was very bright and bubbly.
Busy trendy spot. Great atmosphere and coffee! Great place!
Solid coffee, solid food snack choices, great environment and the types of unique flavors of coffee are awesome!
Five stars for the baristas at the Rockridge Philz! Perfectly made cup of Philtered Soul but better than that was the vibe! As they handed orders over the counter, the baristas were so friendly and generous to offer to make alterations to orders if they weren’t made perfectly for each customer. I complimented two of them directly, Keegan and Emily, who expressed appreciation for the kudos while clearly working hard to get mounds of orders out. My go to Philz are through the tunnel and I must say that they could definitely learn from the Rockridge establishment. Thank you for the very pleasant Philz experience!
Unparalleled, premium pour overs with baristas clearly trained in proper methodology and hospitality by Philz. The interior space is not super nice to linger in more than 25 minutes or so, and generally packed with folks on laptops and, sometimes, a few homeless locals napping, but it’s much nicer than the average cafe in the area. Bathrooms are clean, locked.
Management from a year ago was very negligent of the space. I stopped coming here because it was dirty and the drinks were not very consistent. I was never greeted or welcomed into the store. I stopped coming here and became a regular at the Gilman location. I finally went back with my husband last week because we wanted to check it out after some time- it is also the closest location to us. All we have to say is wow! Whoever is running the place is doing such a great job. The space is clean, the baristas are very kind and during rushes they produce quality drinks in a reasonable time period. I did not mind waiting too much because the environment was so welcoming. I am impressed to say the least that this place has done a complete 180 since the last time I was here which was about one and a half years ago. I would also like to thank Jackson and Kelsey for the fantastic service. I love it when I go to a place with great service and kind staff. What ever you are doing, please do not stop!!! My ONE only concern is the furniture in this place. It is all the same from when I was here about two years ago and I am no spring chicken anymore. My back starts to hurt after a while and I just can't fully enjoy myself here since sitting in the seats here hurt my back. Both the metal and hard wood chairs. Regardless, Philz College Ave, you have got yourself two new regulars!
This should be the golden standard of Philz coffee. I’ve visited just about every Philz location in the Bay Area and this is absolutely my favorite. The baristas here get my drink order right every single time without fail. I’ve been coming here since college for years and it hasn’t let down yet. The location is perfect, in the heart of Rockridge, and the area is very lively so grab a coffee and explore.
Great coffee shop with good coffee selections! Tried their ice mint mojito and I definitely recommend to give it a try. Their pork sausage egg burrito was good, it has a very subtle spice to it that definitely makes it better even without hot sauce! If you need a quick coffe and bite this coffee shop is definitely worth checking out!
This location is about 2 years old now and is located across from the neighborhood anchor, Cole Coffee. There is less seating here than other locations, so you'll often fight for a table (which conveniently have outlets running down the center), or find yourself in line out the door. Most of the time, I come at off peak hours after or before the morning and evening rush. The trash/compost is located to the right of the line, so it's a bit awkward navigating your way through the queue. The Oaklandish baristas are diverse and usually upbeat. Be sure to grab the special pound bag of coffee roast for the month ($14 vs the $18 full price). I order what I usually do: spiced Philz bagel on sesame and a Jacob's/Mocha Tesora, or mint iced mojito medium sweet and with cream.
I met a friend here and was early so I ordered my drink. I wanted something not with a lot of caffeine so I ordered a iced black tea. It was pretty good. It was made by the cup, you could tell. I'm glad that Philz has kept this tradition even after expanding a lot. The staff were okay, nothing really to report. They don't seem to do the individual ordering like they used to at the original Philz in SF. They have a good amount of tables and they also have tables just outside. The chairs were pretty uncomfortable with a strange angle that doesn't feel good on the back after some time sending in them. I appreciated that they were open somewhat late for a coffee place.
I go to Philz often but not just this location. I've been here before but this past time, I had a less memorable experience. When I came in, I'm not sure if they had welcomed me or not (I think they may have but it was said as soon as I stepped into the far end of the store so I couldn't really hear what was said) but I sat at the bench waiting for my mobile order. There weren't any drinks on the counter and it seemed like they were more focused on themselves and their conversation more than me (the customer). To be honest, I'm ok with that but they were dropping f bombs unintentionally in their conversation and I just think they should be aware of that. The real gripe I have is whenever they finished my drink, they didn't let me know. They didn't know what drink I was waiting for but I was really trying to remain patient because it was 5 minutes past the expected time of my mobile order being ready. I just think they need to be trained to be aware of their surroundings and situations. They put my drink on the counter and at some point I looked up and saw 3 drinks there and went up to see if one was mine. They didn't say anything when I grabbed the drink. The drink was good though so thanks for that. Customer service just not so good. Just something to work on improving.
philz used to be great. now everytime i go there im waiting in line for 20 minutes because the baristas are all busy making doordash orders rather than prioritizing the people in the store
Interesting that people want us to respect their gender but they can’t respect how you want your coffee. This place on college used to be good. Actually, the few Philzs I have gone to in the past used to be good. Good vibe, fun friendly people. That def shifted over the years. People are in a bad mood, attitudie, typical customer service, almost dmv vibe treatment now. I guess it is what happens to business when they grow. I love most of their coffees especially the iced Rose that they got a few years ago. It is always a gamble if you will get the way you like because everyone makes it a little different but they always check in abou it. I could deal with that but would bring disappointment often to my daily $7 investment. The thing I disliked the most is that I would end up getting cold coffee, not iced coffee, because since the coffee is fresh, it would melt the ice and I would just get diluted cold coffee. My solution was to ask without ice and then add it to my own cup with a lot of ice. Then, I started noticing people with extra attitude. Like I was asking for no ice to get more coffee, then they started putting less coffee on my cup. Sweetly, I mentioned that I didn’t like the ice because it would melt but that was too hard to comprehend so still attitude. Then, I sweetly chatted with the manager about how rude people were to me just because I was asking for no ice and giving me a cup 3/4 full since IF I would ask for the same coffee hot, it would come full. She was really sweet but I guess that you cannot control people and the attitude just kept happening. It is a better start of my day if I just find the recipe online.
I am a special education teacher and I Just moved here from San Diego to work with students with special abilities. We take our dogs everywhere for support. Apparently service dogs aren't allowed here at Philz Coffee in Oakland? The service woman Kelli who tried to take the order today scrutinized my dog and asked for his vest. We carry his card in my purse. Needless to say I will never set foot at this Philz or any location ever again. I turned around and left. We walked kne block and went to Pete's coffee. They were incredibly dog friendly and also offered us a puppachino.
