Good food, good portions.
Very good comfort food. Made fresh. Excellent staff, very friendly. Very caring owner who has pride in his cooking.
Best diner food I've had yet, been to many including truck stops and restaurants down south. Nothing beats this
Love being able to go to a local eatery and have the servers know you and your usual orders. Food is well made and the place is very homey old school Vermont. Never disappointed.
Clean, welcoming, and the staff were friendly and fantastic. Most of our party had breakfast options and from the happy noises around the table as we were eating, I'd be willing to bet we visit again in the near future
Had a lovely late breakfast with my daughter. Service was wonderful 😊
I dont usually dine here, but the prices are great. The service is welcoming and the portions are generous. If you like listening to music, they play the best from yesterday ❤❤
First time visiting the diner. I was very pleased with the service. The staff was very friendly and helpful. When ever I am in town I will definitely go back
Nice little diner. Love coming here with my wife. There are lots of good choices on the menu. Great place for kids to.
Actually a very good meal. The menu was much larger than I expected and pretty diverse. Super friendly staff, very quaint and quick.
Very yummy gyro and Greek salad!! The other food was also delicious, my family was very pleased and we will be back when we are in the area !!! ♡♡♡
You get your money worth here. I ordered a chicken parmesan with Penn noodles and I had to take half of it home. I would of ate all if my belly was not full. Waitress was excellent. If your looking for hometown diner this is the place.
Food was a little pricey but thats to be expected in an state like this. Side note: I know its something the store owner dont have anything to do with but a man was in the womans bathroom. He wasnt identifying as a woman.
If you are in a hurry, don't go there at shift change. If you can savor the atmosphere with its Greek influence, and the sound of locals chatting & catching up, maybe an occasional bit of drama, and some patrons looking & sounding like a character from your favorite sit-com, and the staff racing about, go. You won't find better food at anywhere near the price.
Great spot to grab a bit of lunch! Service was quick and friendly, and food was quite good. I had an open-faced hot hamburger sandwich with french fries and coleslaw. Food was served hot, french fries were crispy. Prices were very reasonable.
Friendly service and great food
Breakfast outstanding. Great pancakes too. Also ate dinner there. Everything very tasty!
The St. Albans Diner has always been our favorite place to eat. It is not just because of the very attentive waitstaff, or the many choices on the menu. Its not just because of the cleanliness of the bathrooms, or the dishes that never have a spot on them. Its not only because the food is always cooked to perfection at a very fair price with very generous portions. Its all of that and more. They are a team with one goal, the customers satisfaction. It shows the second you step foot in the door. Check it out for yourself, you'll see what I mean. Thank you St. Albans Diner team for a great breakfast this morning! Keep up the good work.
The food was fantastic , I choose what the waitress recommended, the turkey and gravy over the bread was great. I would describe it as home cooked meals . Our waitress was outstanding and she put up with my friend Bruce busting her chops. Keep up the great service .
I am just curious if the diner will be opened for Thanksgiving?
Stopped in for the first time. We live and work around st. Albans, so we were curious. Food was good, but we loved that the chef made special mickey mouse pancakes for our 4 year old daughter! Without even requesting it. Little gestures go a long way! Thank you to st. Albans diner.
We have eaten there and had take-out. They make homemade French fries. Everything we have tried has been great. They serve breakfast all day. The have delicious homemade Rice Pudding and Grapenut Pudding. Friendly, competent waitstaff.
Just when you think it can’t get any better as far as diners go, this places takes it over the top. The food was excellent and prices are very reasonable! Looking forward to coming back for more!
The food was exceptional. It is rare to find potatoes cooked just right when going out for breakfast. These were perfect. We had the eggs Benedict special. It was so good to be worth a trip to Saint Albans to have it again.
Real nice diner. Good food. Reasonable price
Our 1st time eating at the diner. We thought our chicken tenders plate was delicious. Waitress got order wrong so husband got onion rings instead of fries, it was an upcharge. We didn't mention it. Waitress was busy and fast, but not very personable. Restaurant and restrooms were clean. Ample seating so we got a table right away. We would eat there again when in the area.
Some of the best breakfast locally! We've always been breakfast people and love that we can get it for dinner! Delicious eggs with home fries, and great chocolate chip pancakes! We love the staff as well 💙
I have gone back and forth between the Maple City Diner and the St Albans Diner, and I end up nowdays finding myself in thr St A's more diner -homey atmosphere. I have always gotten hot, well prepared meals there with great service. My vo to diner in St A!
Went for dinner recently and have to admit we were surprised. Food was good, service was prompt. Might have to give them another chance for breakfast sometime.
We frequent this place more than any other. It is clean. Good home cooking. We know the waitstaff by name. Although, the decor is very basic and outdated. But we love it there.
Always enjoy eating here. Lots of different items to choose from. The dinners are kind of pricey. Wish there were more details about food ingredients (but might be hard to do as menu is full of the choices).
The service was excellent, the food was good and the turn around time was great. What I like most was they don't shove the bill at you as soon as your order hits the table.
The menu is a little overwhelming with so many items to pick from. BUT the food is good, so go back often to try the other delicious choices! Or take some friends and share. Great comfort food.
More like 3.5 stars. Not horrible, portions were big, get two meals out of one. Nothing really inspired, good old person comfort food. The salads are all iceberg and large chopped veggies.. meh. Its there, its food, you will leave full.
Our waitress was friendly, the restaurant was clean, and it was nice and quiet (we were having breakfast at 1015 though). I had blueberry pancakes and they were good. I'd stop by again if I was in the area.
Had breakfast with family, great service, food was plentiful, good average price, less than chain restaurants. Left full and satisfied. Small Oj was a bit to small, but we don't live in Florida.
The cowboy burger was really good and the sweet potato fries were on point. We opted for the brownie sundae and it was enough for two and delicious.
We had a Turkey wrap and a diner fave: liver and onions. Both entrees were awesome, but the strawberry shortcake left something to be desired (not enough sugar in either the shortcake biscuit or the strawberries themselves, resulting in a lack of juice and a particularly dry biscuit)
The food was pretty delicious. Loved the French onion soup, ribs, chicken wings, shrimp, onion rings. Had high hopes for the clam chowder but it did not deliver. The chowder reminded me of dressing, didn't care for the celery in it either. Prices are reasonable.
This is a very good place to eat. Very nice friendly staff. Food is great and fast. The only complaint is that when you get a to go drink they charge you for it and it's tiny. So don't order a drink to go. Stupid idea.
First off great onion rings. Now for the open faced roast beef sandwich. Open faced great gravy but it was huge and cooked rare as ordered. You can't loose here. Families or solos everyone was happy. Service with a real smile.
Good for a quick home cooked style meal
Everything was acceptable at the diner. I was pretty disappointed to be charged $4 for extra sauce for my gyro. That just seems wrong, and I may stay away from the Saint Albans diner for a while.
Could make better homefrys. Other than that the sausage gravy meal was very good.
We visited the small town St Albans, Vermont, for food and gas before heading back to Canada. We found this small restaurant, apparently a very local one. It was around 2pm and still with many customers. We ordered the sandwich combo with soup and choices of sandwiches. The server was very friendly and helpful. The sandwich was, exceptionally, delicious (maybe we're hungry). The soup was thick and filling up. Fully satisfied when leaving the restaurant and continued our journey home.
Excellent service, comfortable room. Toast was ice cold, home fries were a bit too floury but still edible. Omelette was dead on, I’d return.
Food wasn't too bad. French onion soup with that I was really looking forward to had no flavor though. Waitress could have been much more attentive
It's as mediocre as they come. Stay away from the seafood unless you get it fried. If you want good food, go to Maple City Diner. If you want good prices, go to St Albans Diner. If you want good food and good prices, go to Tim's!
Most restaurants will let you make reasonable substitutions but asking for onions instead of tomatoes and lettuce on a wrap I guess is unreasonable because their policy is "NO SUBSTITUTIONS." I do understand there has to be a line drawn somewhere but......come on. Also, a dollar extra for cheese on wrap. Yes, I can easily afford the dollar but it seems a little much. Now about the Ranch Chicken Wrap, which I have had before but not for for awhile. It was huge. But when I looked at it, one half was mostly lettuce, some shredded cheese and very little chicken. The other half had the correct amount of ingredients and was very good. The onion rings were delicious. The other people in my party had similar experiences. I hadn't been in awhile and I don't plan on
I swear, I don't learn! We have nick named the St. Albans Diner "the nickel and dime you to death restaurant." Two of us came in for breakfast today and my boyfriend ordered the Deuc breakfast combo. French toast and bacon combo. His meal was $14.99. I ordered French toast, bacon, and home fries. The waitress rang me up at $6.99 for four pieces of bacon, $6.99 for a side of home fries, and $10.99 for French toast. My breakfast was $27 just because she rang everything up separately! This is the second time this has happened to me. Beware! They won't tell you there's a combo and that you are going to pay insane prices for sides! In the end two of us had a basic breakfast and walked out paying $56 for two people to have French toast, bacon, and home fries. When I asked if they could change my order to the combo which is the same thing for $14.99 they said they can't and it was too late. Anywhere else my meal would have been $13.99 tops. I am back to boycotting the St. Albans Diner.
Big variety, lots of different menu options but quality of food has gone down in the past few months and fairly quick at that. Any little extra thing asked for is charged to your bill including substitutions ex. Asking for a few extra onions on a salad or asking for an extra coleslaw instead of getting french fries with your meal. The service has mediocre at it's best. Haven't been back in over two months and no plans of doing so anytime soon.
Good service, friendly. Decent portions at breakfast, not sure about other meals. It's a diner. Crappy silverware, napkins are cheap GP thin paper. Decor is nasty '70s paneling and criminally old broadloom. Go there for food, not atmosphere, unless you're a hipster, in which case the whole '70's dining experience is somehow cool or "ironic".
Maybe not a big complaint, but for an extra salad dressing pack, and 3 black olives I was charged $2.00 extra! My Turkey open sandwich was good! Staff was nice….
A good place to eat the only negative occurrence is when you pay you bill a 20%tip is added. Your not told this will take place there is signage to explain. So often the server gets a tip twice.
Super slow service, extremely expensive food, they charge extra for Vermont syrup. Save your money and go across the street.
Took particularly long to get our food and the French onion soup tasted like it was made with just water, no broth, because it had no flavor. Hard to eat. Lots of advertisements everywhere. Overpriced.
Service was great. Food was horrible. Hands down, the worst omelet I've ever had. Homefries were only half cooked. Pancakes had no flavor. Coffee was good.
3/4 of our steaks were pure fat. Absolutely gross. Eggs and toast are good. Stay away from their steak. Also service isnt all that great. Had to go find napkins. Been here a bunch and for the most part its average. 2 out of 3 of us got steak and the fat together was equal to a full steak. Why serve it. Wishi could upload the pictures. Paid and tipped just won't be going back.
I always like to give somewhere 2 chances before writing them off and I’m officially done. Food is subpar at best. On my 2nd visit I felt like the waitress just didn’t care to serve me because I wasn’t a regular.
I am actually boycotting the St Albans Diner after two very bad experiences. The fist time was when I came in for breakfast and ordered a breakfast burrito with potato. Now in most restaurants a breakfast burrito is large, and packed full. A meal by itself. Here, my burrito was literally 4-5” long, and 1 1/2-2” wide and just pathetic. The worst part was that because I added potato, my burrito cost me $13. I was completely shocked and wasn’t even full when I left. It was a baby burrito. My second bad experience happened two weeks later when I showed up at 7:45 for dinner on a Wednesday night. When I walked in, the door sign said open, but the staff were quick to tell me they were closed. They close at 8:00. In a time like this, and the economy is in the toilet, I would think businesses would want customers. I guess not here. We left and walked across the street to Maple City Diner. I haven’t returned to the St Albans Diner since and I don’t plan to. P.S. your potato home fries are double cooked and disgusting. You may want to alter that recipe.
My fish sandwich was good. Clam chowder only passable. My wife asked if the tuna had onions and ordered it when told no onions were used. She was unable to eat it because of the amount of Onion POWDER they used. I would think that was the same as onions. The waitress said she was "sorry", but still charged for the uneaten lunch she threw away. Been here before, and it was pretty good, hence our appearance today. Today it was lousy. It'll be a good long while before we go back. Too many good places near the center of St Albans to go back here.
My breakfast was great! My wife's grilled chicken breast with stuffing was terrible. She ended up ordering something else. They changed us for everything. With tip, 56$. Will not be repeating that adventure.
Small diner. Didn't expect much. Friendly staff. Booths all had holes in them, with colorful duct tape... "Home fries" were stale and not hot. Mexican omelet was good. Hamsteak wasn't too salty like many places are. Won't go back.
My expectations weren't high, I expected frozen food being cooked up, what is horrible is the nickel and dime stuff that occured. They charged $1.5 for real maple syrup, even then it was proportioned out small cup of it, charge for a to go container as well, you name it. Buddy you are in Vermont, the original owners of this place would be ashamed of what you are doing to it. Honestly, if you want a small diner go to Tim's let this place close or get new management.
Totally wasn't what I expected. I was referred by workmates and I was anticipating more. It didn't satiate my hunger as much as it disappointed me. They were nice. However, my experience wasn't savory or provocative enough to invoke a return visit for food or ambiance. They did have an extensive menu...maybe I chose poorly. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt...and an additional star for still being open during this pandemic... To be clear...I'm not from this area...so if this place is representative of the local cuisine...lol...then, please disregard my review. To support local businesses, please patronize them, to get good food...maybe utilize input from a discerning individual 😂...with a keen knowledge of local eateries. ....the guy who originally told me about the place was dressed head to toe in wooded camouflage...I didn't want to stereotype because me being a Black guy visiting a very small town, I understand all too well how stereotypes work...lol..that being said...he probably wasn't a "cuisine guy"...I'll probably not be as anxious for diner food moving forward 😳😳😳..or suggestions... ...nice waitress, however...
Watched wait staff leave unused silverware and placemats on table after people have had their meal. Just seems gross even if they didn’t use them the were exposed to food and germs
I don't regret trying it, but not worth returning. Meal came out to $25 pre tip which is steep for a diner. Bacon was sad, sausage was school cafeteria quality. Pancakes were spongy, not light and fluffy. Ordered my eggs over easy, and they were over medium. Above average diner coffee. Service was great and fast. Atmosphere was quaint and exactly what you would expect from a long standing local diner.
The food was ok but the portions tucked. I got a taco salad and it had a pretty good size shell bowl but in it was just about all lettuce and a very small portion of meat, so I ask if I could get another portion of meat which they charged me $5.95 for another small portion and then on top of that I asked for 2 to go boxes and I look at the bill and saw that they actually charged us for the 2 Togo boxes... I personally will not ever be going back there. I feel like they ripped us off.
My husband got steak and eggs and the steak was way over cooked and the fattiest cut they could find. Eggs were good though. Bacon was microwaved and my omelet wasn’t bad but was surprised that the feta in it was literally left in a giant block right in the center. Toast not bad but not homemade same with the home fries.
3 giant doughy under-done pancakes with 2 tablespoons of syrup for $13, fishy under-done french fries and a mediocre burger....awful. But the service was great, the place is super-dated but mostly clean. When asked if we wanted the server to talk to the kitchen about my uneaten pancakes, you could tell she knew that wasn't going anywhere. She came back and and told us the kitchen said the pancakes were fine.... OK. Customer service is lacking bad. The table next to us barely ate any of their food either. The server was the saving grace otherwise this would be 1 star.
I was forced to pay over $80 for moz sticks a pot roast meatballs meal a french toast meel and pasta shell meal and 3 Pepsi's that's over $80 ?!?!????? Like I loved them before all stars but today does it! I sat in bottom left corner booth from front register if the owners see this my mes Isaiah Robison. I loved your establishment since I was 15 16 around there I'm 27 now and over charged and mozz stick cheese was tasteless I'm sorry 0 stars I won't return Front counter Booth. Booth. Windowbootha Booth. Booth. Wb *Booth (here)*. Booth. Wc
Bought a breakfast for my son that comes with coffee. Spent 45 dallors on our meal and they charge us for 2 coffees because the coffee wasn't for my 10 year old. Pretty shady business. Food wasn't anything to write home about anyway.
I went here for lunch with my wife and friend. We ordered three entrees and asked if we could substitute the chili as a side, to which the waitress said "yes." She delivered the chili beforehand and then brought the entrees with a full plate of sweet potato fries, when he had asked to count the chili as a side. We were charged 3.50 for the sweet potato fries and an additional 3.99 for the chili, all which was against what we thought. Since we were stuck with the fries, we asked for honey mustard, and found out they charged us .75 for each small serving of honey mustard. In the end, we also got a bill of .25 for the to-go box to store the left over fries. At this point, we were in this mistake for well of 15 dollars plus tax. All in all, three lunches came to a total of $62.50, a bit exorbitant for a small diner. I feel nickel and dimed.
We sat there for over 46 minutes after we ordered waiting for our food. My dad's toast was never toasted. It was just warm bread. It wasn't even busy. People who sat down after us got their food before us.
Was not pleased with my waitresses actions while eatting so i left a small tip. After walking out she chased after me an my girlfriend out to our car. She proceeded to ask alot of questions "is this funny" " what happened" the usual thing like that. She made it to my car window and kept asking as i kept saying goodbye. This was the first time i have ate there an WILL be the last
It pains me to write this because this is a really great restaurant with great food, great staff and great prices. Unfortunately, me and my family and as many of my friends as possible will advocate boycotting this place because they've replaced their previously precious hospitality with open hostility about masks, and have adopted a new, terrorizing level of mask policing. Sad.
Friendly staff... but, if you don't like how's something cooked by Tom, they will take item away & cook another ....but, when you get your bill - you get recharged for it! Nice place right across the street (Maple Dinner) or Codys in Swanson or a drive to Burlington from now on!
Our waitress was horrible we had to ask another waitress for things that were missing that we ordered and for a to go box best part of the food was the toast we got homefries that had no taste to them and were very plain i asked for a western omelet with my peppers cut extra small i got a dry omlete with big pepper chucks and they charged us $50 not impresses. We took 2 adults myself and husband along with 2 kids a 4 yr old and a 7 yr old and it was $50 dollars. Never again will i go to this place.
I was eating here the other day and overheard the owner yelling and berating one of the dishwashers, calling them worthless. This kid looked about my age (i’m 17) and having worked in food service myself I was mortified. The boss (maybe owner) is so terrible to their employees that I will most likely never eat here again. The food was never anywhere near as good as all the other diners in town anyway.
If zero stars was allowed i'd put that! Will never go here again! I can promise that! Our lovely waitress ran out to our car tonight after we had dinner with my brother, sister in law and all of our kids. She proceeded to run her mouth to us about the tip that was left for her. Mind you our tip all together was fair. She then proceeded to swear at my brother and handed his money back(I didn't receive my tip back nor was either asked for) she then said the owner told her to go out to us and say something to us about the tip. This all took place in front of our children two babies and a four year old. My brother and his wife went in to talk to the owner and of course nothing was done and they defended her. I will never return! Very unprofessional oh and If you need a name her name was Brenda. I will NEVER return which is quite sad seeing how we all eat there frequently! Clearly more often then they deserve! Maple City will receive our business along with my families. What a joke. Truly disappointed and how dare she do that in front of our children and swear and throw money. Unbelievable I'm so angry!
Only putting this review in to potentially save someone. I asked for chopped tomato on the side...i received a mushy mass of tomato I knew I shouldn't eat and didn't eat most of it...but, had a small amount...I'm paying for that now in the form of food poisoning.
RUN! DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! After waiting 20 min to have our order taken then another 45 min for our food. We were served over cooked and inedible we asked of they could take PART of the fowl meal charge off our bill and they called the police!
I don't want to leave a bad review but the food is not that great and it is way over priced. $80 food bill for 4 small meals?? Charged extra for condiments at $4? I went here about 15 years ago and found hair in my eggs and I never ever went back. Well I took my family here because my wife wanted to try it out and after a bad experience once again I remembered why I never wanted to return. The diner across the street is much better where the old "O.H. Snack Bar" use to be back in 80s.
Disgusting & Disappointed. Steak was riddled with steak seasoning so was soooooo salty it was unbearable and was RAW!!! I like rare meat but you could barely cut it and was ice cold. No butter for my roll that was actually just a sandwich bun and was so dry it fell apart. Didn’t get my veggies. But don’t worry I got 5$ off for my inconvenience! Kids burgers tasted like dried meatloaf. The bathroom was revolting, I’ve seen better ports potty’s! Lol. Never again! However, I will say that the waitress was very sweet! My advice to her is, sweetie find another place to wait tables! You deserve more!
The arrogance of the owner is astounding. Made a small complaint about the food and I got it back saying there was nothing wrong with it. A simple reheating would have solved the problem. This place isn't cheap either and the decor is old and dingy and man stay out of the bathrooms. I've seen better gas station bathrooms. Just not worth eating here.
Went in with my daughter. We were seated. After 20 minutes of no service we got up and left. The diner was not crowded. I got the impression the staff did not like new patrons, since they were hanging out with, and chatting and laughing with, other patrons.
I was in this restaurant last night and I am appalled at how the waitress Brenda acted and how management encouraged the behavior. There were small children that had to witness this. Normally it’s pretty enjoyable to go here. I have gone many times. But because of the cursing that I witnessed from Brenda to a customer in front of the small children , because Brenda didn’t like the tip they left is unbelievable. I have been a waitress for a long time and I would never talk to a customer that way or confront them because I didn’t like the tip they left. Brenda should take a look in the mirror and examine herself and ask herself if she is in the right line of work. Customer Service!!!!! I wouldnt let you take care of an animal let alone people. And management haven’t you heard the term the customer is always right. You should never encourage this behavior from an employee to a customer. Customers are why you are open. I will encourage all of my friends and family to stop going here until you get rid of Brenda and change management.
My wife ordered a kids breakfast because she wasn't super hungry, waitress took the order then brought her back a full meal which was 7 dollars more. She didn't want the full meal that they decided she was getting and she sent it back. I went to pay and apologized for the inconvenience but was told by the Old ******** behind the counter that I'm not a kid and I have no right ordering a kids meal at my age. I was told it was stated in the menu which to thier surprise is Not, and the waitress failed to inform us that if you're an adult you're NOT allowed to have a kids meal. Seriously too old? If that doesn't sound like age discrimination, how pathetic. We had breakfast there every week for a couple of years but never again. Over priced, unfriendly and have no regard for customer satisfaction. I complained and he told me not to come back. Definitely go across the street the service is better and the food is cheaper. I'd have given no stars if I could. DC
Came into St. Albans Diner today. Waitress was very friendly and prompt. However the hot Turkey dinner that I ordered was NOT very good. The Gravy was pasty and too thick. The boxed potatoes were over whipped and pasty as well. The mixed vegetables were bland and cold. Guess who is not eating here again.
I will say this place was the worst dinner I have been to in a very long time. Dirty after we were sat we thought about leaving but did not want to be rude. So we ordered are eggs were overcooked the veggies were raw (mine were raw onions) and I actually feel sick now. I'm sorry I hate to leave a bad review but the cook needs to be held accountable.
I’ve been here now three times. Each time, I’ve ask for sometime, such an extra plate, or a box to go, it’s “I have to charge you for that” and today, they made the wrong chicken wrap with grilled chicken. I asked them to remake it, and they flat told me they’d charge me to remake my food. Absolutely ridiculous!! Ive been in the restaurant industry for 16 years, never have I ever been told they’d charge me for a whole new sandwich!! Never coming back.
As a native New Yorker, I am always eager to try local, small businesses here in Vermont. This place is the first where I have been thoroughly disappointed. The staff is nice, offering you Vermont syrup with your meal, or even bringing it along with your food and having to take it back (since literally everything is an up charge) but hey! maybe that’s the norm here. Aside from that I got chocolate pancakes..not sure how a diner could mess that up, they were mediocre at best and had mini chocolate chips on one side of the pancake. French toast was pretty solid, home fries weren’t terrible, and sausage patties were the standard frozen ones from the freezer section at any grocery store. Looked at the check and laughed at the fact that a side of bacon (4 strips) was nearly $10. The portions are very large and I think the prices are reasonable for entrees. You will have to pay a fee of .25 per takeaway container (which was extremely odd). Staff needs to clarify the million fees they charge. I’m all for supporting small businesses instead of large chains but I think this place gets business purely because the people of this state do not know any better..If you’re thinking about stopping here, just make food at home, you’ll thank me later!
Burger taste like propane and chemicals. Took 2 bites of the burger. Told the waitress about the taste. No apology not solution and then charged me for it!!! I didn't even eat it! DO NOT recommend especially if your hungry. The bathroom stinks like urine too. So there's that.
