Best fish and chips
Fast service and good food
Simply the best!
Chinese food at it's best
Great food
I have been eating food at Cheongs since 1989. One of if not the best Chinese take away in St Albans. Great fish and chips. Great Chinese food. Lovely people.
Me and all my friends have used cheongs more or less since it opened as cheongs, kit and his wife kitty always gave a friendly welcome and although don't see him too much now all the staff are very friendly, and of course the food has remained superb from day 1 to now. I would highly recommend anyone to try it
Brilliant portion sizes and quality for a below average price. One of my good to places whenever I want chips. Staff are very kind too.
Now called starlight fish and chips and under new management but just as good as before, very friendly. Skin is removed from both sides of the fish, perfect.
Run by the owners of The Camp these are without doubt the best fish and chips in town! Friendly, and always freshly cooked
Best place to get fish and chips in the whole of St albans. Would never go anywhere else, I would only regret it
Fresh crispy well fried fish and good chips. Worth every penny

Nice food
Nice fish and chips
Good take away!
Very nice people and a very nice Chinese meal from this place I have used them over the last four years and never been disappointed
I’m writing a Fish&Chips review! Why? Well last nights was excellent. Quick friendly service. Lovely cod and haddock pieces with crisp dry batter.
Good fish and chips here. Crispy batter on the fish and they do a good curry sauce. The only problem is one in common with a lot of St Albans eateries is the number of food delivery drivers causing queues at peak times.

Just got our justeat order from the new Sunlight fish and chips shop, gone straight in the bin so so greasy, no taste and fish smashed to pieces, did the driver play football with it first ?
Microwaved buns & bland noodles. Was very disappointed.
Ordered Cheong’s for the first time in, maybe, 12 months or so and sadly the quality has taken a huge dip. Portions seem almost half the size as previously ordered - which I can almost accept, if the quality of food was good, but it really was sub-par. Shame, as I did enjoy a Cheong’s occasionally - won’t be going back.

Massively disappointed!!! 1. Food was poor! (pictures below) 2. Portions were pathetic!! I have attached photos below. The plastic containers were less than half full. 3. They asked me to come in 20 minutes and then made me wait a further 15 mins. This is a pandemic when I would prefer not be standing around a Chinese for 15 minutes with people coming and going. 4. THEY DO NOT ACCEPT CARD!!! Ordinarily, this would be strange (not sure I can name another business that doesn't accept card) but during a pandemic this is totally unacceptable. Makes me wonder WHY they would only accept cash!? Still hungry! I can honest say this is the first time after a Chinese takeaway....would be stuffed if I had chosen anywhere else. Not impressed at all! Would like to support a local business during this time but just totally unacceptable in everyway.

Poor Poor Poor
I would give zero stars if I could. Horrible overpriced food. I would recommend getting your food from somewhere else. Honestly gross, dry. See pictures. May as well have thrown 45pounds in the bin
Been using this Chinese takeaway for 25+ yrs and we received the wrong order called them up and they replied saying if I was to drive back (20mins)they would let us have the dishes they got wrong meanwhile the rest of the meal was cold and ruined so asked for refund which was flatly refused have no comeback as they only take cash ? so will not be using this takeaway again any reply expressing will do better will be hollow.
Gave 1 star because food was hot on arrival. The food itself was awful and by far the worse I’ve ever had, we will not be ordering from here again!
My chips were cooked at least 2-3 times and were hard not good at all.
The price is way higher the quality.. have no idea what they use as chicken, but its like jelly..
Food tasted horrible and They got the order wrong
So deeply disappointed with the Chinese food section of the shop, after a fantastic meal last time, we were looking forward to the next one, the same order by this time very poor in everything, the service totally not the same, the food cold the ribs were just last night's heat ups tough as old boots with just extra sauce to hide the fact ! Why are they cash only? some sort of scamming going on there ? If you make a complaint they do nothing? So Chinese take out side of shop, as you can not treat paying customers with some respect or deal with customers complaints so here is what I going to do just for you. Give the next customers a chance to read this and make their own choice if they want to spend their money and end up just throwing the food straight in the bin just like we HAD Too, Because all you want is cash money !!! Yes cheongs was great back in the day when the old man and family ran it, but now cheongs is open just for greed and milking the name they once had. As you might guess we won't be back nor will our friends and families Tavistock Ave resident of 40 yrs. 😠😠
We waited over 2 hours for our order from Cheongs on vesta avenue tonight. They had delivered to the wrong address 20 doors down! Tried to fob us off with prawn crackers...first time we had ordered with them and never will again!!!! Sent the driver away after 2 hours. Terrible customer service and will NEVER order from them again!! AVOID!
Have been using Cheongs for a long while. When I ordered food for delivery they wanted to charged £3. They said it was because they have to get someone to deliver. It has been free for a long time. On the menu it says free delivery within 3 miles. I live within that.
Food very poor in taste. 1st time visit. Won’t be returning. Sweet and sour sauce tasted of to much pineapple. Shredded beef dry and inedible. Kung po chicken no flavour. Prawn toast cold.
Really disappointing. First time here and expected it to be nice. Very expensive, poor flavour and very small portion of the meat item. The fried squid was so hard :( won't be coming back
Used to order from here all the time. But they have clearly changed the ingredients in a lot of their food. Myself and my partner were both sick, within 20 minutes of eating. Complete waste of money. What have you done to your food? It used to be so good. The dumplings taste like sausage roll filling in cheap shells. Avoid.
Me and my colleagues used to come to Cheongs Chinese every tuesday for a classic little "Chinese Tuesday" treat at Lunch. However, over the past 3 weeks or so the quality of the food has diminished significantly. We used to be greeted by a lovely chirpy fella on the till who always looked after us and asked where the other person was if someone was missing. The food was always freshly cooked, generous portion sizes and cooked to perfection. Egg fried rice was always lovely and moist with a little bit of soy sauce. As of recent it hasn't had any soy sauce and been very dry. The Salt and Pepper Chicken pieces always used to be tender inside with a light crispy batter. However, again this seems to have changed and the chicken now tends to be overcooked and dry. Our plea would be to have the young gentleman back in the Chinese rather than the Fish and Chip side where he has been for the past month or so. We used to really enjoy our Chinese Tuesday's so would be disappointed if we stop due to the service and food dropping so much so quickly. Bring back our boy.
Poor experience, over charged and the previous customer pointed it out. Asked for them to look at what I had been charged. Wasn't happy, I asked for my money back. Got told no, to bad. Continued to ask for my money, then got told that I took the food. And we have video where it is taken back to the kitchen. The older lady hit, kicked and launched fizzy drink cans at her staff. Then took a photo, and said "I will put you on Facebook, you are banned."
Was so hoping for improvement but we've just wasted money on inedible fish. It really can't be the same supplier as Cheongs used: the fish portions are smaller, have no taste, & much less meat. They also had gristle in today, which I've never come across in fish & chips before. After years of loyalty to Cheongs, the new owners are sadly losing our family as customers. I'm genuinely sorry to say that but we just can't afford to waste money like this. PREVIOUS REVIEW: New owners have taken over - great owners with an excellent reputation. They've also kept the same cook on from Cheongs. But unfortunately they appear to have changed fish suppliers from who the Cheongs used as the fish quality has been dramatically poorer since they took over. Cheongs always had gorgeous thick white fish with lots of taste, but suddenly we have thin pieces of poor quality tasteless fish with barely any 'meat' on them. We didn't realise the Cheongs had left til a week ago but that explains why the place has become so unreliable in the past few weeks. A lot of locals have commented on it. We want the place to be what it was, for this lovely family to make a success of it, but that's not going to happen unless they sort the fish issue, sadly. We will try one last time and will of course change this review if things have got back to how they were. Fingers crossed!
My usual Chinese takeaway was closed tonight. So after some research I looked at the reviews of Cheongs. The reviews were brilliant. I couldn't get through on the phone because they were busy so had to go there. I waited an hour for my food - which didn't bother me because they were so busy and I was looking forward to the great reviewed food. The food was awful... no flavour what so ever. The chilli beef was disgusting, was there any beef in there? The kung po was bland. The chow mein was dry. The dumplings were greasy. The only items half decent were the chicken balls and the free prawn crackers. Which is why I don't mind giving it 1 star. Hugely disappointed!!!!!!
This used to be a fantastic take away, we had a bad one a few weeks ago but decided to give it another chance this evening. In a word 'Dreadful' the rice was burnt and hard, the chow mein was more onion than noodles and the chicken balls were under done and not very hot. Most of it went in the bin, I'll not be coming back again!
We used to really enjoy Chongs, but the quality and service have declined to the point that we will not be returning. I recently ordered a chicken chow mein that contained almost no chicken, and when I phoned to raise this, I was told that this is simply how they prepare the dish, with no offer of a replacement or refund. Mistakes can happen, but what was most disappointing was the refusal to acknowledge the issue or make any effort to put it right, effectively implying that my feedback was not believed. After 15 years as loyal customers, it is frustrating to see that loyalty dismissed rather than valued. The noodles themselves were also extremely greasy, which only added to a very poor overall experience. Regretfully, we will be taking our business elsewhere in future. It would also be helpful if a card machine were finally introduced, as paying by cash only is increasingly inconvenient.
Ribs are all chopped up like dog meat , beef in black bean sauce was clumpy and tasted burnt . Noodles was overwhelmed with onion , and was told we had to spend £35 to get prawn crackers , absolutely disgusting never ever eat hear again
Only ordered because usual place didn't answer. Food was awful. Chicken Balls and Hong Kong Chicken rock hard. Rice was and always has been horrible. Chow Mein had so many onions. Never ordering again.
