Just down the street our neighborhood diner. Addicted to the chicken salad club!
Our new favorite breakfast spot. Everything was delicious and the coffee is amazing. And it is gigantic!
We visited the Gateway Diner in the late afternoon for an early dinner. We were greeted and seated immediately by a pleasant host. The waitress, Emma S, greeted us and took our drink order. Emma was very patient while we made our choose for dinner. The food was arrived very quickly. All the food was fresh with a nice presentation. We were very pleased with the service and the quality of the food. I recommend The Gateway Diner for all of the above reasons ( good quality food and service).
Good food that was done correctly with reasonable prices. Service was great as well.
My sister and I came in for lunch- the sold us the special on homemade empandas- Tonya as a manager is absolutely wonderful, Christina was not our server but she made us feel very welcoming. We shall return for sure.
A diner delight. Friendly service, good food and the diner ambiance of your best dreams. Worth a detour to find it.
Food was smack! 🥴😋🤤 first time there will definitely go again!
The Steiner is a classic you can get anything at any time if you like diners I definitely recommend this place.
We had breakfast and it was good. Our server was casual and professional. He was a really good server, I wish I had gotten his name. The atmosphere was fine, kinda quiet because we were there between breakfast and lunch. I'll go there again. The desserts look phenomenal, but I was to full and I didn't really need it anyways.
Staff are super friendly and food is always good never had a bad food in 30+years
our waitress was heather amazing service and everything was delicious here. thank you
I went for a family visit to Albany. It was a great experience. All staff were friendly. As soon as we got into the restaurant they welcomed us. We got the table, Jordon helped us with the menu options, he was very patient and joyful. Food was excellent. We ate country eggs and wrap followed with kids menu. Very delicious Highly recommended. Btw, we were there for a family visit we are from New Jersey.
Been here many times. A go-to spot for my partner and me. Excellent and relatively quick diner fare. Their freshly baked desserts are to-die-for...forget about your low calorie diet while you're there. Staff very friendly. The only drawback is that I've gone there a few times during their advertised "open" hours, only to find they were closed, with a sign saying they did not have enough staff to cover. This is generally some weekday evenings, but once it was on a weekend. It's understandable, I can appreciate that, but still disappointing. Other than that, I recommend Gateway for a relaxing time, and a good meal.
Always good and always dependable. The atmosphere is very comfortable, particularly at the counter where I think the attention is a little bit quicker. There is nothing like breakfast at a diner counter. My order was taken promptly and in fact, she asked if I needed a bit more time with the menu which I did. Beverage was refilled without me asking. The omelette was perfectly done, and the fillings were of a good amount. I really have no complaints on when I am in this part of town. I will stop at the gateway. If I had one small point to pick it was that I was charged $.50 extra for onions in the home fries and I wasn’t asked beforehand. Not that I would’ve refused! An Albany staple.
The Dinner was very Clean and rhe service was fast The food was very delicious, Plan on a revisit in the near future.
Seated quickly, waitress showed and asked if we needed drinks within a few minutes. Drinks came fast, gave our order and within 10 minutes food was in front of us! Portions were good sized and food was delicious. Waitress visited our table just enough to not be annoying. Absolutely perfect.
Great food, fast to the table and our server was attentive and went above and beyond to make sure we had everything we needed! Thank you.
I’ve been here for several large gatherings. They have a great banquet room. Staff is always very accommodating and they serve my breakfast in the region.
We had an over-all perfect experience here today! We were seated within 1 minute, Our server was fast and great about checking our coffee for a warm up! The food was amazing. The bread for the French toast must have been baked fresh there and sliced nice and thick! Our eggs were cooked exactly as ordered, the breakfast sausage is probably the best ive had with plenty of home fries. In and out within roughly 30 to 40 min! Thank you to all at Gateway Diner!
9:45am on a Sat, seating was fast, friendly. Waitress was great, fast, friendly, attentive. Tons of Biker gathering, beautiful weather, friendly atmosphere inside and out. Food was great, hot, full plate, fast service. Loved seeing so much diversity , really exceeded my expectations. Definitely going back.
The London Broil with eggs is literally the best steak and eggs I’ve ever had anywhere. I come here specifically for this. It has so much flavor and is cooked perfectly every time. It just melts in my mouth. Paninis are really good too.
This place was great. I’ve been here several times. Menu is huge and the portions are generous. Everyone in my party enjoyed their meals.
Service was wonderful! Best food I've had out in a long time!! Thank you, we will be returning!❤️
The Gateway Diner is amazing the atmosphere is very welcoming. All the staff are kind professional efficient but most of all very caring.. I felt like I was visiting family it is spot where you can slow your, being in the moment and just be You can enjoy your meals and conversations without rush or overwhelmed by loud music, conversations from other tables. Whether are a family with small children or in your golden years.it is a comfortable save place to diner and enjoy good food and lively deserts.
Welcome to the door by the waitress. Very friendly service.. excellent food. Excellent service. For 2 people about $20.00 each Meal what you decide to pick. My waitress name is Gianna. Very polite and helpful. Very attentive.
Gateway Diner: a taste of pure joy. From the second we stepped inside, the vibrant energy of The Gateway Diner hit us like a wave. The buzz of families, the inviting aesthetic, and a lightning-fast greeting made it clear we were in for a special experience. Our waiter, Jordan, then took things to another level. With incredible positivity and infectious humor, Jordan transformed a lackluster morning into a truly amazing afternoon. This wasn't just a meal; it was an event, and the first impression was spot on. Our culinary journey began with the sensational Loaded Nachos and Jordan's perfect suggestion: the Loaded Fries. Both dishes were a masterpiece of flavor, piled high with perfectly seasoned beef, melted cheese, fresh tomatoes, onions, and a zing of pickled jalapeños. The crunch and flavor were absolutely immaculate. Next came the main event. The classic BLT was anything but typical—a true bang for your buck in both size and flavor. As for my Gateway Panini, it was a flavor explosion. Loaded with turkey, corned beef, crisp lettuce, juicy tomatoes, creamy avocado ranch, and tangy coleslaw, every bite was a testament to fresh, perfectly prepared ingredients. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, Jordan's final suggestion arrived: a slice of the house-made Oreo Cheesecake. This dessert wasn't just a treat; it was a revelation. It melted in my mouth, each bite a perfect balance of savory and sweet. I devoured it as if it were my last meal, every bite telling a story of pure indulgence. I absolutely recommend a visit to The Gateway Diner. This culinary gem, located at 899 Central Ave, Albany, NY 12206, has been an Albany staple since 1971. It blew me away, and I hope you have the same unforgettable experience. Food: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Atmosphere: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Service: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Overall: 5🌟's! Thank you for reading! “Where every bite tells the story.”
It has been many years since I have been in Gateway diner. Service was great was seated right away. My waitress was right there to greet me asked about a beverage. Then given plenty of time to look at menu. Not a long wait. Delish and nice and hot pancakes with sausage. It was great Price was awesome 13.00 pancakes, sausage, juice, and coffee was one of their specials. Highly recommend
Tonight I’m at The Gateway Diner Ordered: Monte Cristo with both melba and syrup ( I wasn’t sure which I would like better 🤣) My son got Pancakes, egg, bacon & sausage. Once he put some salt, pepper and hot sauce on his eggs, he was ready to eat. He demolished his food. My sandwich was okay. I think the ham was a little too salty so it threw it off too much. Would get again but with just turkey. Def a lot of meat tho. Served with chips. Side note: shout out to whoever told me to use real maple syrup. I just added a lil bit from home and I actually think I like that combo better than the Melba
Thanksgiving morning, 9:30am —OPEN!! Passed by 3 other diners that said they were open but not. Even McDonald’s was closed. 😞 But on our way to the supermarket, saw many cars parked in front of here so pulled in to spy customers inside! Ordered their 2 eggs specials, one with ham and another with sausages. Both were delicious! The ham 3-4mm thick and steak-width round. The 2 sausages were not the tiny links but real sausages. The eggs were fried beautifully and you could tell they were good eggs, very pretty and well sized. Our waitress was prompt and attentive, topping my coffee as she noticed it was low. The design of the curvy wood beams were unique and organic adding to the friendly atmosphere. (Tell me what style of architecture you think it is?) Happy Thanksgiving 2024!!
The server Denise was the highlight of our experience!! such a kind woman and very helpful.

Delicious food, fast and friendly service. Best grits I ever had and their homemade hash was very good too, I don't normally like hash, but this one was very good. My husband had the Denver omelet and said it was the best one he ever had. Kids had pancakes, eggs and side of bacon and sausages. The bacon wasn't the best, but the sausages were good. We were able to have dessert right after breakfast, that was fun. Great prices too.
Normally a good diner experience with good food, large portions and decent prices. Still the same but the service was neglectful. Ever get the drive-by inquiry as to your satisfaction with the food? This time there was no slowing down for the tollgate.. gone before I could swallow! Signals indifference to me, and on top of that the bill was wrong and we waited for 20mins before we got to order. Not a bad joint but some servers are better than others.
Food was decent, didn't take long at all to wait... Nice selection of Brews 🍻 soo toast to that
They tried to seat us at a booth with a ripped seat to start. Grits were cold.
Food and service were great ,parking was fine.
Had the Texas burger. Really good EXCEPT for the bun. It was sandwich bread, toasted, already broken apart into chunks. BBQ sauce and all the condiments were everywhere. Burger cooked perfectly but the bread was ABSOLUTELY LAME.
Overall, the experience was pretty good with a few notable exceptions. The bathroom was disgusting. Nearly everything in there was broken, and it was in desperate need of cleaning. That aside, the food was generally well done. I ordered French onion soup and it was delivered with completely burnt cheese. Not just toasted, burnt black. The open face sandwich was good, and the buyer and fries were perfect. The waitress was attentive and did a fantastic job.
The seasoned fries were some of the best I've ever had. The turkey club was also very good. My lunch mate had the veggie lasagna and declared it fantastic. He even bought a second to take home.
Basic diner. My food was fine, but my friend had problems. The coffee creams were expired, coffee is weak.
Really good coffee, but the eggs and ham were lacking in flavor and presentation. Who slaps square cheese across eggs!? Shredded cheese is what you are supposed to use! Lunch and dinner are delicious though! Very good service :)
Super friendly and quick service. The fried cheese sticks were great (but when isn’t fried stuff great?), the dolmathes (stuffed grape leaves) were pretty good, although not the most flavorful I have had. The Greek salad was good. The spanakopita was some of the worst I have had: soggy and flavorless. The men’s restroom is under construction and not usable, but you can knock and use the Women’s which was well done.
This is a great diner that we visit quite often. Lately the service has been an issue, but this has just started over the past few months. Orders have been wrong on multiple visits or on several visits our waitress has forgotten about us. They made it right, but it's happened enough to where we are starting to look for another diner. We never experienced these problems before. They have a great menu and the food is pretty good and reasonably priced.
Solid all around diner. Super friendly and attentive staff. Food is always out quick and hot. One of the best homemade corned beef hash plates in town. Dependable going on 20 years.

The service was excellent, friendly and prompt. The potato bacon soup was good. Although, my hot open faced meatloaf sandwich was the worst I ever had. Meatloaf was very dry and slightly burnt.
The food was really good, our service sucked. Our waitress was too busy chatting away with other staff, didn’t even get our drinks until she brought our appetizer out.
Had breakfast there with my son. It was okay. Your fruit selection could use a better selection. Yes, we are in winter time. But at least throw in few fresh strawberries, or bluberries. We got some type of container fruit and it was soggy and awful. It didnt even look good enough to serve. The atmosphere and waitress were just fine. Food was okay. All in all, not the worst. Not the best.
The food is quite bland and the homefries were not what I expected. The orange juice I ordered tasted watery. We came with a group of 8 and were seated pretty quickly. Service was pretty good and food came in a timely manner.
Not sure what young adults are thinking and how they pursue occupation as a server and tips from customers. Although, please, keep in mind if i have to walk to cash register, get own service DON'T EXPECT TIPS TOO. 😁😁😁 P.S. customer service is not for everyone as field of occupation, remember that at first..including young adult this afternoon, nasty girl representing CDTA Flex scheduler...😁😁😁
It honestly seems as though this dinner has lost its quality in food. The best thing we had that night was the loaded nachos and that's just because of the chips. The orders had been messed up a little, burgers were overcooked, and items were missing from plates. The waiter seems to have been the wait staff manager and beyond him was 1 other woman who sat guests and ran them out and possibly was the bartender? I saw 1 other staff member out behind the sit at the counter and that was it. I know there are kitchen staff but how much, no clue as it is behind closed doors. The waiter was a bit rude in the way he said things, including being the only waiter there and being stressed out, and having been there since 8 am with no help. A bit unprofessional in my opinion but I understand being stressed and not having a moment to take a breath though. The last time I had been to this establishment was around 10+ years ago and I remembered it to be amazing. At the end of the dinner, we looked down and noticed a lot of ants around some crumbs of food at our feet. We notified the staff, paid and left and more than likely will not be back.
Food was good, service ok. Typical diner.
This was a nice place however the food could have been better. I had the French toast, there were soggy and the turkey bacon was dry. My partner had a Panini, however it wasn't that great and it lack seasoning. Our waitress was sweet and she made sure we had everything we needed.
Meal: $11.99 Base Up charge for bagel (60 cents) instead of toast and added cheese ($1.45) Two eggs, bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee. I had to remind the Male waiter that the OJ came with the meal. He never refilled my coffee; not even once. He did not even come back to drop off the bill. I did tip him 15% which was $2.10 Will not be returning.
Good points: friendly service, good potato soup, and my husband enjoyed his very-crispy-but-still-moist fried chicken. Our meal was also dirt cheap. The big bad: possibly the worst egg sandwich I…
I've eaten here twice now. And it's not very good. I gave them a second chance, hoping it was just a bad day. Nope, food sucks. Great prices, lol
I ordered off Uber eats but i usually order from them and get the same thing, today it look like they tried to make their own corn beef hash and this is horrible and tried to feed me anything and my eggs aren’t what I asked for I’m very disappointed. They could of called and aid they was out of it instead of making this dog food
4 stars for my waitress Mona Lisa, who provided great service and smiled the whole time. The diner offers breakfast all day, but my bacon, potatoes and pancakes were rubbery, not fresh, like leftovers cooked yesterday. The chick who cashed me out talked on her cellphone during the transaction = low value behavior. I will stick with Jimmy's Egg, where the food and staff are great.
Went in today for lunch had a roast beef club(was not happy with it the meat was fatty could barely eat it and I asked for mayo and didn't have it on it or cheese the bread was thin n not very good) daughter had a Philly cheese which she liked the service wasn't the best either and the Lemonade taste horrible
Hi, When I used to come here in the early 2000's it used to be the spot to go to especially after having a few drinks out. If I am not mistaken it's new ownership. This place sucks. I ordered the Fried fish sandwich, which was not a sandwich but a fried, dried out with no taste, piece of fish on a cheap dollar store hot dog roll. The menu said fish sandwich not fish on a roll. I asked for onion rings the waiter brought out fries. As a waitress especially if you count on tips you should make it your job to remember the order that way if there is no expeditor you can expedite and correct order before bringing out. The onion rings were ok, however my seltzer water with lemon was flat. The girl never came back to offer a refill and I had to ask another waiter to provide a refill. Shocking for a Saturday the place was empty and the vibe felt dull. Not the same place it used to be, my best friend's chicken wings were not fried correctly. The manager was nice he offered a discounted pay out which was nice. I was not going to give the waiter a tip, but, because I know how important it is, and me giving her the benefit of a doubt she is new, I decided to tip $8 anyway. Will never eat hear again. Better off going to Don & Paul's in Waterford where they remember your name, your favorite drink, and it's always crowded. Do better!!!!
UPDATED: JUN 2023 We went for lunch at 3 in the afternoon. I counted about 10 tables and 5 employees on the floor. Service was extremely slow and the food even slower. It took our server 7 minutes to come to our table. Potato skins came out 33 minutes after ordering. The sandwiches took another 16 minutes. Our lunch on a slow afternoon took 65 minutes in total. Potato skins were covered in what seemed to be a melted Cheese Whiz. They were delivered to our table with no plates so we ate them over napkins as our server was no where to be found. The breaded chicken patty on my panini was dry and lacked flavor. Fox News was playing on the TV. We won't be going back. ORIGINAL: MAY 2022 The Gateway Diner is an Albany mainstay serving up good food with great service. I don't know many diners which cater to such a wide clientele. They offer many diner standards hash that they make in-house, to meatloaf, to incredible looking cakes and pies. This diner also has a liquor license allowing them to serve up adult beverages as well. Whatever you're looking for, it seems they've got you covered. I didn't have high expectations going in other than to possibly have to wait for a table given how full the parking lot was. However, the restaurant is much bigger than I thought and we were immediately seated. Our server quickly greeted us and made up for the lackluster welcome that our 'host' gave us. She was friendly, answered our questions and offered suggestions, and she was there to check on us a couple of times throughout our meal. She definitely gave us 5-star service. Our server said they just updated up their menu so it seems their online menu varies a bit from their current dishes. I believe I got the Gateway omelette which now comes with spinach, mushrooms, onions, hash, and cheese which was a delicious combination. The corn beef hash is made in-house and was tender and full of flavor. I added onions to my home fries and a side of rye toast. All was good. My husband had the poached eggs. He said the hollandaise sauce was great. The only short comings were that my omelette was a bit over done - crisp on the outside, the poached eggs were overcooked, and the well done home fries were more tough than crispy. Despite that, we thoroughly enjoyed our meal. Great value as there's plenty of food for the cost and great service from our server. We'll definitely be going back for more.

Just so we’re all aware, this restaurant has a bed bug infestation. I saw them in the booths, and heard employees discussing the situation as well. Do not come here
The vibe is off here. Almost everyone in the dining room where we were seated had their coats on due to how cold it was. Their thermostat read 63 degrees when we were seated. Our pancakes came out cold and were not fluffy; felt like they were very dense and made ahead of time to serve quickly. Disappointed in the fake maple syrup sitting on table after ordering.
We stopped by here on the way home from a procedure at Albany Med. I must say our meal was horrible. I had Eggs and Rye Toast which were perfect. The home fries were cold dry and obviously old and never should have served. The Sausage was over cooked and not edible. The pan cake had an off taste, not sure what that was I did not eat more than one piece. My friend had a Chicken Buffalo wrap that was mostly lettuce and Tomato, with very little chicken. The Fries were perfect as well as the Coldslaw. I close with this, We will never return here.
Eggs were obviosly out of a carton, corn beef hash was dreadful with zero flavor . The new trend of diner's trying to save money by not using fresh cracked eggs exclusively will cost them business. My mate ordered a chicken salad club which was bland . 53 dollars wasted. Will never return!
I was disappointed by the service at this diner we had three different waiters which I thought was awkward they basically just sat us down gave us our food and the check they didnt check in at all to see if we needed anything or if everything was ok didnt ask if we wanted desert its like if they were trying to rush to get rid of us the food was good but they did ignore my request of no mayo I will not be returning to this diner or recommend I'll stick to the one in East Greenbush
Everything was great but my food. I was not pleased my eggs ,were not fully done. Neither was my home fries, and how you water down my grits, no good . I gotta say they could have cooked the food better and really took their time. Other then that it was great parking was decent. And who gives me a bag of butter and no ketchup?? But Hey maybe if I dined in it would of been better experience,Good luck to you. .
The food was completely fantastic. The coffee was excellent, but unfortunately, the service was borderline terrible. I consider myself a very polite individual but the server that served our table Came off as hostile and rude and it kind of put a damper on things because I was in front of my child. I hope that they can fix this problem if they would fix this I would definitely give it a five star rating.
Plenty of options to choose from, so I wanted to try several dishes. I have been here over 7 different times expecting a different experience but receiving the same bland food and mediocre service each time. The last visit our waitress decided to take her lunch and pretty much abandoned our table. Find a new chef.
Ordered scrambled eggs for someone in the hospital. Even asked for ketchup and jelly. The girl at the register gave them to me and when i got to the hospital i had 2 pieces of carrot cake!! Called and they said my next breakfast will be free of charge.. what i already paid you for it!!! If I could give you a zero i would.
The first thing I couldn't help but notice was this smell when I entered the building. I should have turned around then but we stayed. Had a little crowd but was very short staffed based on what the server said. The server was ok. Not good but not awful. Ordered liver and onions with a salad, mash potatoes and kale. The only decent thing was the kale and onions on the top of the liver. The liver was tough and flavorless. Ranch dressing tasted like tartar sauce, mash potatoes was instant. I eat instant potatoes but this was just not good. My mom had home fries no seasoning nothing potatoes still somewhat hard. She did take the food off my bill. THANK YOU. Would not recommend this place to anyone at all. If I could give it no stars I would. Don't waste your money here.
If I could give fewer stars, I would. Just picked up my college-aged daughter from the train station. She was tired and hungry, wanted something good and quick. The waitress was friendly, but had no clue what she was doing. I ordered the fried chicken dinner, and she seemed surprised that it was even on the menu, I had to show her. She had to read what sides came with it, before asking me what I wanted. I asked for a side of rice. She stated that they did not have any rice. In a Greek-style restaurant... My daughter got the "French Toast". It was literally nothing more than grilled bread. No cinnamon, sugar, or any flavor at all. The waitress provided fast-food-style syrup packets and butter. My fried chicken was way over-friend, and the only flavor was the gross amount of salt. The coleslaw was inedible, and served with pickles on top-who does that? We ate about half of our food. No, we did not complain out loud because nothing was going to fix or make this meal any better. I gave the waitress a fair tip on the bill, as I'm sure she makes no money working there. Never again will we go there.
I was debating on writing this review however after seeing some recent terrible ones I can no longer keep my mouth shut. Normally I go here with my Boyfriend however we decided to visit on January 18th & had a terrible experience. There were like 3 waiters yet one who we never seen before shouts "Sit wherever you want. What do you want to drink?" Like that should of been the red flag for me however it was two other servers coming up asking if we wanted to be helped. They kept forgetting condiments. The HUGE concerns for me is how the one little girl whose skinny with Brown Hair conversates unprofessionally with Customers. It was a snowy day and this Elderly regular came in & asked her how are you doing and she proceeded with "The Weather is SHITTY" like girl I'm trying to eat... Same girl was gossiping with the other employees because a takeout order called for an $80 order and they were furious accusing them of not tipping and they didn't even pick up the food yet. How do I know this? I could hear the whole conversation. FYI: Tipping isn't Mandatory!!! The final straw for me is when the same little girl cashed us out and before my Boyfriend got the chance to sign, she took her greasy finger and just scribbled where he was supposed to sign like I kept my mouth shut because I didn't want to make a scene. You need to teach that girl customer service skills then maybe she wouldn't have to worry about working two jobs and getting underpaid.
So I was meeting ppl at gateway diner January 17th so the host sat me down where my table was I asked for a glass of water she said that she was not my server and said my server be there in 15 min but after a few minutes the host brings me water like come on. The server was miserable she was rude she rushed a lot of us and some ppl were late but she shouldn't have rushed any of us. So I ask if they had fruit punch and they did but when she brought my drink over it was not fruit punch it was orange and I said this is not fruit punch she said it's tropical fruit punch but it didn't taste like that so then I asked for lemonade and when she bought that over the lemonade had way too much pulp and I didn't drink that or the fruit punch. My food I ordered was spaghetti and meatballs and the meatballs didn't taste good and the sauce was soupy and the sauce was disgusting. After the service We all had we won't be going back there. A lot of us didn't leave a tip and everything was so bad.
I've lived in Albany for 30 plus years. I've been to the Gateway Diner hundreds of times. I've spent thousands of dollars there. Every time I order grubHub or some other delivery se and they always tell me that they included the item, which is always a lie because I wouldn't have had 10 deliveries in a row missing an item that's always mysteriously placed on top of all the other items. This place was great when Dina owned it. It's not the same anymore. Avoid this place like the plague if I could give it negative five stars I would. This place sucks.
