Canyon Cafe (aka The Birria Spot) is popular for its birria dishes, especially the quesabirrias and birria ramen. Customers praise the flavorful consommé and generous portions. Some find the quesabirrias too cheesy or the birria flavor lacking.

Outstanding, authentic birria 🤤 Most of the negative reviews here seem to be for a different restaurant - Canyon Cafe. The Birria Spot was very good.
5/5 recommend. I ordered 3 quesabirria tacos. The handmade tortillas make them taste so good. It’s difficult to find a spot that still makes tortillas that are handmade. The tortillas were toasted nicely with a great cheese to birria ratio. The consume had a great flavor and the salsa had a great taste with a nice kick. All of the staff were super friendly and nice. The restaurant itself is very clean. I will definitely be back to try other options on the menu!
Today's the first time I tried this place and I must say that this is the best Mexican food I've had in a long time. I ordered 2 nachos and 3×quesabirrias. Both items were so tasty and fresh. At first I wasn't sure why an order of nacho would cost $17, but after tasting it I say that it's worth the price tag. This is not a place for cheap food. If you don't want to spend a little more, go somewhere else. The guy at the register was very attentive. He noticed that another customer was cutting in front of me intentionally, so he insisted on taking my order first. I was very pleased with his outstanding service.
I recently visited this birria spot driving over an hour away was recommended by word of mouth, and I can't say enough about how great it was! The food is absolutely delicious—every bite was bursting with authentic flavors. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, making it the perfect place to enjoy a meal with friends or family. What makes this place even more special is that it's a family-owned business and gives the homemade taste with the fresh handmade tortillas. Highly recommend if you're in the area!
When i went here the food was good. Also when i went to the bathroom it was very clean . The lady serving us was very nice. I’d give it 5 stars
Restaurant had great food. Clean and friendly. Owner stopped by booth to make sure everything was okay and if we needed anything, thought that was super cool. Would recommend and we will be back.
This place was nice surprise. Newly opened and family owned, they are great!! Friendly relaxed atmosphere and they aim to please. They accommodated for my allergies and I enjoyed their food very much.
Eating out when you’re on a keto diet is generally not very exciting. So when I stumbled upon The Birria Spot online today and saw they had keto tacos, we just had to try it. The lady who took our order and rung us up was super friendly and helpful. We ended up getting several keto birria tacos and one carne asada keto taco. The taco shells were fried cheese and I expected it to be crunchy and maybe fall apart… BUT NO! They were cooked perfectly so that they were soft and flexible and added so much flavor to the birria. They were easily the tastiest birria tacos I’ve ever had. We are DEFINITELY going to be frequenting this place. But then it happened… there was one taco left. It was the carne asada. The moment I bit into it, I felt a hundred spots in my brain all light up at once!! The amount of flavor was so unexpected and shocking. I’ve never had a taco (keto or otherwise) hit like this. I think the meat was obviously very good but then the keto shell just set it off. Anyways, glad we found this place and I can’t wait to go back!
First time here. Came her with my Mom. We had the Quesabirria tacos. Gotta say some of the best Quesabirria tacos I've had in a cool minute. Everything was spot on. The tortillas where not soggy, just the perfect crunch. Flavor on point. Definitely delicious. Nothing negative to say at all. The staff was all super nice and knows there menu. Will be back for sure. ❤️🔥💯
The food is flavored amazingly, the worker who took our order was so nice! It's easy to tell the place is full of heart in their food, deserves more praise
Great food. We were traveling though and it was right across from the hotel. Staff is very friendly and helpful when ordering. The birria and console was delicious. All their hot sauces arr more like medium but delicious. It was great for my wife that does not like really spicy foods. When we come through again I will definitely be back! Birria fries are totally awesome!! Your taste buds will love you for it!!
This is DEFINITELY the spot to go for birria. With the horchata, I was practically in heaven with how good it tasted. Felt like I was being enlightened by whatever god is out there.
Perfect chips, Birria Quesadilla, Birria fries, California Burrito(shrimp) were just delicious! The portions were big, and tasty. Great flavors and friendly staff, try them now!
Oooo the Birra was delicious, tender and juicy. The servings were above what you get at most places. You will not leave hungry.
Had to try this new taco place because who can say no to birria?? This place took over the old American Canyon Cafe, and, while I still mourn the loss of the great breakfast diner, it looks like The Birria Spot is a pretty amazing replacement already! The pollo and asada tacos as were well made, seasoned and tasty! The birria tacos as well birria fries were yummy and not as oily as other places. What I especially liked about the birria tacos was the tortilla. It was crispy on the outside but fluffy/poofy inside, so it took in the consomme really well. Also, ohhh, that creamy strawberry agua fresca... it's like a childhood candy! Needless to say, I'll be back again to try more on their menu. Definitely a great addition to our selection of taco spots 🌮💕
The service felt sure cozy and family like as if I had gone over to my cousins house for Birria. I was going to get the Birriaman, which is Ramen Birria but saw they offered tortas, so I decided to get a Birria torta. It is safe to say I am grateful I did because it was flavor full. Tortas can be a hit and miss when ordering out but this was a home run for sure. Would come back again, when I'm back in the area. Their red sauce is the perfect level of spiciness if you like to eat hot sauce with your food. If you don't I would go with the their green sauce. Overall super welcoming and great quality of food and vibes. Ps. Sorry about my half eaten tortilla, I realized I needed to take a picture before it was all gone. Lol
Not to be dramatic but this was the best birria I have ever had. I had the order of quesabirrias and my husband had the birria fries. The consomé alone was what stole the show for me, it was so perfectly seasoned and the most flavorful dish I’ve ever consumed. My husband said the sauce they put in the fries was amazing and i got a taste too and it tasted incredible! The service was amazing, they were so nice and attentive, they checked up on us several times to make sure we were good! I was very impressed with our overall experience! The only dangerous thing is that we live so close and might be stopping by a little too often! Definitely a must try! This is the best spot to eat in American Canyon, and the Napa Valley Area!
I lived in Vallejo for over 20 years and never visited this hidden gem. Is rough looking from the outside and the area is truly a country style dinner. It you can get over that, ones you are inside you are in for an amazing experience with the sitting areas that is very spacious and nostalgic old school but we'll care for. Our host Kristen was very tentative to our needs and made great suggestion. Prices are fair for the size of your meals. We order classic burgers omelette and a special of the day pork chops that where amazing. I will come back to this dinner more often specially for their house potatoes, oh my delish!!!
Had a great experience at Canyon Cafe! Visited on Sun 11am, we were lucky to get a corner booth. Our server, Melissa, was very prompt and attentive. The biscuits and gravy were delicious, home made biscuits! This is a half order. The bacon was perfectly crispy/chewy, hash browns were perfect too. My family loved the pancakes, omelet and cheeseburger! Would come back again for sure!
Me and my husband went here a day before my birthday for a little treat before I turn 21, I LOVED the quesabirrias…. him on the other hand stupid got a ramen birria and got overwhelmed. The ramen was good but eating it all feels a little overwhelming on the long run…. OVERALL we loved the taste and would go again for some quesabirrias!!!
Our go to place for breakfast. It's a well known place here in American canyon. The food is just as great as the service. Update: under new management! They have revamped the interior of the diner as well as showcasing a brand new sign by the roadside! They are also in the process of building an outdoor dining area for the upcoming spring and summer season. A few changes to the old-established menu as well. Here's to looking forward to trying out something new from a familiar place.

If you like ramen this restaurant has an excellent Birriaramen. The Birriatacos are fantastic! Your complimentary tortilla chips taste really good also. They have a variety of beer to choose from and micheladas.

Kept seeing talk about this spot on FB. Decided to see what the hype was about. Got the Quesabirrias which comes with 3 and some consumé. Handmade tortillas made it really good but only thing they weren’t crispy. Not soggy at least but was hoping I would get more of that crunch. Birria tasted good they weren’t too greasy. Wish they were a bit bigger in size. $17 plus change for this plate was not bad. Tasted good and high quality. I would come back again! Nice atmosphere and seating inside.
Order: Quesabirria tacos - Way too much cheese. Could not enjoy this Birria Fries - I'm not a fan if meat covered fries but this was very good. I would order this again. Birria Nachos - Top notch portions of each ingredient was balanced and enjoyable to eat
We visited here multiple times because our hotel was right across the street (and the hotel had an outrageously priced grab and go burrito as it’s only option). Canyon was what you would expect from a diner. It was good portions, reasonably priced and decent food. Staff was friendly and kept the coffee full.
Their birria was flavorful and tender, but the real standout for me was the orange sauce on the nachos—absolutely delicious with just the right amount of heat and flavor. The quesobirria was tasty but very rich, so it can feel a little heavy. My favorite item of the night was the shrimp tacos. One thing I really appreciate is how each taco is different and built around the protein. The birria taco had a completely different flavor profile than the chicken or shrimp, which made for a great variety in the meal. One thing I would appreciate more is if their menu was clearer on prices of specific food items: example the drinks. And I am not sure if they served any desserts. Didn’t see any on the menu board, but again, drinks weren’t listed there either. The staff was friendly and welcoming, which made the experience even better. I do wish the inside was a little cozier, but I’d love to see if they set up outdoor seating during warmer weather. Definitely worth a visit if you’re craving great tacos and birria!

We knew the food was going to be good because, before we went in, we saw nothing but construction and blue colar work trucks parked outside. Those mucachos know good food. The taste of their food is great, but it’s to expensive. We ordered two of their typical meat plates and two horchatas and our bill came out to $ 90. It’s nice that they had a salsa bar, but we had to ask them to turn down their music, it was so loud I had a hard time hearing the attendant. It’s a self order place, no table service. The atmosphere was nice, it had a relaxed and safe feeling. I’d go back only if I’m craving the type of meat they specialize in
The birria flavor is definitely lacking. We ordered birriamen, quesabirrias, and a sope de asada. The red and green salsas were flavorless, and the birria broth was bland.
Ordered menudo, rice and beans. Menudo was really good. The rice was partially cooked and crunchy and the beans lacked seasoning. Must just have been a bad day. I will definitely try again.

Was really looking forward to great quesobirria tacos every since my fav spot El Garage in Richmond closed. The Birria Spot was okay but definitely not up to the standards set by El Garage. Ordered the Quesobirria tacos, 3 to a plate along with the consumme. The tacos were packed with meat and cheese but the flavor was a bit lacking. They barely put cilantro and onions on them which to me adds flavor. I added some salsa from their salsa bar and pickled jalapeño and carrots which made it better. The chips they served at table were horrible (tasted like stale bagged, cheap chips). The consumme was too watery, felt like they watered it down 😢 I will give this place another try and try something else next time. My friend had the Birria Ramen and he enjoyed it. Nice spot for Birria just not the best... Still searching for Great Quesobirria! Service just okay, order/pay at counter then seat yourself where they bring your food to. Anything else you need or want, you have to chase down a Worker to ask for.
The plates of food were smaller portions than anticipated for $20 meals. We spent $80 for 3 people compared to $50 total at other restaurants. Other restaurants also have larger portions for the same price. The food was good but it was not hot enough, including the birria sauce which was cooled down by the time it reached our table.

UPDATE: We went back again this new year and honestly it was disappointing. The prices went up by like $3-4 , without any signage or anything. Imagine thinking you’re paying for some birria fries for $18 (which already is pricy) to end up paying around $21-$22?? I felt honestly so sick after I ate those fries. Their horchata used to be so good too and now it’s just grainy and not the best. I have no idea what has happened to their quality and their menu. It just honestly is too expensive now and not worth it. Below is my previous experience around a year ago. Now I’m just dissatisfied. The staff is so welcoming and the place is always clean. BEST HORCHATA IN THE AREA. I obviously recommend their quesabirria but I would also recommend their ceviche and chilaquiles. The place overall has pretty good food for a good price
Both times I’ve gone wanting to try their food after work and they told me they’re closing early, looks good but the hours don’t mean much apparently
The food was served cold, and the birria with shrimp had very few shrimp. The price was fair, but the portions were small. The environment isn’t family-friendly — the music was vulgar with a lot of profanity, not suitable if you’re bringing kids. The best part was the service: Melanie was excellent, very kind and attentive. Hopefully, they improve the food quality and overall atmosphere.

They did not have any of the ingredients to make my food i waited for 30 mins just so they can tell me they were out of the ingredients to make chilakiles and it was 11am
The flavor profile is not it. Thick and definitely water down. We asked for a salsa that normally is provided with a chili oil sauce was not provided. Almost tastes too thick with the wrong chilies. Slow simmer with a taste of guajillos, little garlic and the beef flavor. I had high hopes for this place. But the flavor was not it. The staff is amazing however.
Disappointed and scammed so I felt after opening my order quesabirria before it needed flavor but the quality was acceptable but this time scammed the quality and flavor is very bad !! Wait 30 min for this what a disappointment to pay 19 dls for this I could go to a food truck it would have been a better option and I would have received the same quality. Does anyone know what happened to this place? Look at this before and now!👎👎😔

Came in ordered a wet burrito and a coke, 25 bucks. Sat down after 5 minutes I realized the cashier failed to give me chips and salsa. Looked around couldn't find anyone other than the cook who never made eye contact. I looked around and realized a salsa bar over to the right. Go over and some got little cups of salsa but there were no chips so as I was gathering the little cups on a tray the cashier came out so I asked for chips. I sat down with the tray and out came the chips. Chips were kinda stale cold and tasteless along with the green and red sauces the salsa was good. So I got up to find some napkins and when I sat back down the tray was picked up by a lady ending her shift so I never got to try any of the other items at the salsa bar. When the wet burrito came they served it with plastic forks and knife. It was cold and the flour tortilla was soggy like it had become a paste and tasteless due to the tast less green sauce. The meat was bland there was nothing to write home about this place. It is unfortunate because the location is next to a high traffic road and with little effort this place could be rocking. The coke was fantastic. Maybe invest in some spices and enthusiasm!
Very bad service. I was there i orderef quesabirrias the boy dindn't hand me napkins i have to ask and he hand me roll from other table cause were out i asked for salsa and he said they don't have. I guess he dindn't want to go and grab from the kitchen i don't believe thers not, because rhey about to close and they don't want to do anything i still paid for my food and leave a tip that don' t reserve.
