Excellent food and cocktails! Delicious coffees and deserts! Had a very special birthday lunch here with my friend. I would highly recommend! Perfect portions and knowledgeable friendly staff. Looking forward to our next visit!
There is something special about finding a place in Austin that stays consistently excellent every time you walk through the door. Having visited Cafe Malta several times now, it has evolved from a simple dinner option into my definitive "safe haven" for hosting. Whether I’m bringing out-of-town friends for their first real South Austin meal or gathering the family for a long-overdue catch-up, this spot never misses. It has that rare, effortless charm—it’s sophisticated enough to feel like a treat, but relaxed enough that you aren’t shouting over music just to have a conversation. Why It’s My Go-To: • The Food is a Constant: I’ve never had a "miss" here. The Mediterranean-inspired menu is inventive but grounded, and the house-made pastas are some of the best in the city. You can tell the kitchen actually cares about the ingredients. • The Vibe: It feels like a true neighborhood bistro. It’s warm, welcoming, and has a staff that treats you like a regular even if you only stop by once a month. • The Reliability: When you take family somewhere, you want to know the service and the quality will be there. Cafe Malta is the most reliable recommendation I have in my pocket. If you’re looking for a place that values quality over hype and makes every guest feel at home, this is it. It’s a South Austin treasure for a reason.
We had dinner at Cafe Malta and it was an excellent experience from start to finish. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared and full of flavor you can tell there’s real care in the kitchen. The only slight downside was that it was a bit loud during peak dinner hours, but honestly, that just speaks to how lively and well-loved the place is. The Lavender Crème Brûlée was absolutely incredible. Perfectly balanced, lightly floral, and executed beautifully. It was the kind of dessert you keep talking about the next day. We’ll definitely be back.
A very cool very hip and excellent local bar/restaurant with innovative cocktails and very tasty entrees and appetizers. Try the Blue Ruin gin drink and their version of short ribs are fantastic. Old Austin prices too! Very good value here! Great bar tender and friendly helpful wait staff.
What a great hidden gem, inside this nondescript strip mall is a wonderful little cafe that will transport you directly to Europe to drink and eat and enjoy. The vibe will immediately slow you down to savor every moment, from the aesthetic of the dining room, to the wide variety of drinks to the hand made food. The portions may not look grand but they will fill you up. I had the perhaps the best pasta I've ever had here at cafe Malta. I encourage reservations only because it's a small cafe, they do have bar seating but it is popular. The service also allows for a full experience of your meal, they are not trying to rush your meal.
Every dish tasted authentic and thoughtfully prepared, with generous portions and rich, satisfying flavors that felt truly homemade. For a lunch spot, the value was impressive—the quality easily matched what you’d expect from a much higher-priced restaurant. Our server was welcoming, attentive, and clearly knowledgeable about the menu, which made ordering easy and enjoyable. It was also a great sign to hear other guests mention they’d come based on recommendations and positive word of mouth. That kind of reputation doesn’t happen by accident. Overall, it was a standout meal with great service, and I’d happily recommend it to anyone looking for quality food at a fair price.
Well we finally did it. My wife and I have talked about visiting Cafe Malta for a Tour de Fork for more years than I can count and tonight was the night. While I wish we had made the decision to come sooner, I am very happy we made that decision tonight. The menu was absolutely superb and pairing it with a wonderful bottle of wine and finishing it off with an amazing espresso really set it a step above. The atmosphere is very comfortable and quaint and the service was outstanding. You've gained some new loyal customers and we’re already thinking about our next tour de forks as I am typing this.
We had a great dinner experience at Cafe Malta celebrating a friend's 64th birthday. There were just three of us, so the relaxed, intimate atmosphere of Cafe Malta was ideal for the occasion. We started with panisse, and the mussels, served ciopinno-style accompanied by crusty white bread. The semi-spicy, rich seafood broth was definitely worth sopping up with the bread... 😀 I had the dinner-size seared salmon salad, which was a delicious combination of flavors and textures, delightfully topped off by toasted pecans. One of my companions had a large, grass-fed porkchop with lots of veggies on the side, a hearty repast that was given two thumbs up. Our third companion raved about his large portion of heavenly, near-gelatinous short-rib in a super-unami Cabernet demi-glace. He even took about four bites home as it "was too good to waste". Our waiter brought us a chocolate chile creme brulee to share for dessert (on the house!). It was even better than it sounds, and we scraped up every bite from the ramekin, lol Cafe Malta is highly recommended, five stars!
One of my favorite places in Austin. It had been at least 4 years before Covid I had last visited this place I didn’t know it had survived. I moved away from Austin after my last relationship with my kids father (who introduced me to this place) and I was in town today. I actually went to a different place and as I sat there with the menu, cafe Malta came to mind but I could not remember the name. And so I googled (of course) as soon as I saw the name and it said “open” I made my way there. As I sat there I became overwhelmed with anxiety I sat in front of the very table my kids father, our son, and I would sit at the memories flooded me and the anxiety grew. After my favorite salad there and a drink I quickly realized I had missed out on how amazing this place actually was all along I remember everything tasting so good but today it tasted AMAZING! I thanked god for the place I am today and how incredibly happy I was, enjoying a diner without my favorite person in the WORLD. My husband was home texting me all kind of dirty playful things before he left me alone to heal one more part of myself. I had avoided a place that held a big part of my story, that I actually enjoyed but bc of the trauma that came with it I put it so far away in the back of my mind I couldn’t remember its name. Thank you to everyone I came across that was so very kind just as I remember! (and I don’t remember a lot of things). I can’t wait to be back, this place is amazing!
Great spot. The menu is focused and adjustments (keep them reasonable, they are highly accommodating, let’s not abuse this) are well taken. They actually tried to do something great here. Ideally, the building/plaza owners would let them change the front door and facade. Sometimes you have to compromise.
Favorite restaurant in Austin, hands down. The atmosphere is delightful and the staff is so friendly. Everything we ate was somehow better than the next. The gnocchi was silky and pillowy, the peach salad was fresh and delicious and the lamb fettuccine special was out of the this world. The pasta was so fresh. And can’t forget the flourless chocolate cake. Speechless. Everything came out fast and piping hot.
Perfect neighborhood bistro! It's just the right size with a delicious local and seasonal menu at approachable prices. I love taking my Dad here when he visits. Everything is super flavorful but also feels so nutritious. Service is great and food comes out fast and hot! It gets busy at peak times so go on off hours or make a reservation. Highly recommend the brisket ravioli and gala apple salad!
Hidden gem! The food was authentic, well portioned out, flavorful, and all dishes (if not mistaken) are homemade. The price for lunch was affordable considering the quality of the food was that of a $$$ restaurant. Our waiter was friendly, communicated well, and knew the menu. You know a restaurant is good when new customers coming in say, “they’ve heard great things about this place.” You must try the GNOCCHI BLEU!!! You will melt for it :)
For a cafe located in a strip mall, this restaurant has an unexpectedly cozy and faintly European ambience due to the light fixtures and decor. This created a great, "hole in the wall" vibe. The price point was very reasonable and affordable when compared to the quality of the food. I ordered the Grilled Berkshire Pork Chop and my dinner companion ordered the Bistro (grilled marinated hanger steak.) Both dishes were good and the vegetable saute was exceptional. For dessert, we ordered the Basil Panna Cotta with Strawberry which was flavorful and fresh. The Apple Crumble is an easy crowd pleaser and was flaky and food. It took a while to get the check or drink refills but this is understandable due to the server shortage. Not pictured, we also enjoyed some excellent decaf latte which can be attributed to the expresso machine at the bar. The I can Explain Everything ( limoncello, cachaça, sweet lemon juice and prosecco) was delicious and dangerously strong. I'll definitely be heading back again!
Awesome spot for a nice, quiet brunch! The atmosphere is very simple and clean with some nice decor, it feels homey. Their Eggs Malta and their Steak and Eggs are really good. The steak was very tender and well marinated. The Eggs Malta were nicely poached over a crispy slice of pancetta on spinach and a toasted biscuit, very good. Their goat cheesecake was fantastic. The crumble crust on the bottom had a nice nuttiness to it, and the cheesecake itself was smooth and creamy with a very slight tart finish. The chocolate drizzle on top added a nice dark contrast. Definitely recommend this place!
First time to visit Was excited about mussels special, hoping it would be authentic like in European as this place is advertised as European cuisine Unfortunately, this dish fell short: the mussels were over done and very small, amount was like a teaser and the wine sauce was off (maybe over cooked or old) and the price was ridiculous The ambiance was dim lighting and it appeared mostly locals frequent this establishment The bartender was exceptional and hostess was pleasant, however our waiter was extremely rude and impatient (he may have been going through personal issues but as a server one should leave that attitude at home and be prepared to do their job to best ability) We also tried a glass of wine and dessert. Both were very delicious. Overall prices here are a way too high for the quality. If better servers than this is a nice, somewhat fancy hang out for business or meeting up with friends, otherwise I currently don't recommend due to high prices; rude, unattentive service, and sub-par quality of food. Definitely distinct from the majority of restaurants in Austin, both in the menu and atmosphere. Food was good, service good, and we enjoyed the visit. The grilled veggies I had were overpriced but good. The mushroom and goat cheese plate was better and more adequately priced. Overall, good food but not spectacular. Certainly worth trying as you might love it.
We had a reservation today, but unfortunately, we had to leave because the noise level was too high. The conversations around us were very loud, and since I had a headache, we decided it was best to go. We’ve eaten there before and the food quality is always 10/10, but this time the ambiance just didn’t help.
Had the special fresh housemade fettuccine in basil pesto with grilled shrimp. Pasta was good but the pesto was lacking a punch and kind of bland. Shrimp was bland so was the bread. Significant other had the pork chop which was good but also a little bland, same with veggies and risotto
Well, if you want dive bar service at the bar and mediocre food then this is the place for you! The server, possibly the owner or manager encompasses an opposite of hospitality attitude. I began to wonder why I was there. As far as the food, my first dish was too salty and the second, not seasoned enough. There was NO love in the food. The reason for two stars was for the wine list and nice atmosphere. If you must go, then I recommend sitting at a table far from the bar. Rough and uncomfortable.
Server was definitely coked out, took 45 mins for the food to come out that did not match the menu. Mussles were in tomato sauce when the menu said white wine. Noodles were were as wide as gauze and bland. Sorry guys, as with most things in Austin, aint what she used to be.
